Small bugs that hide between kernels as soon as they are exposed. So far nobody has discovered a method to effectively get rid of them.

Actually, Gaava is the root of all other bad Middos. It feeds on and breeds many other bad Middos. It is a self view that goes deeper than any other attitude. Working on this should be first, before going on to other Middos that are based on it.

The first thing is to correct actions. Think how you would behave if you were no better than anyone. After that, you start trying to change the underlying attitude. Gaava doesn’t have to be based on a specialty, and a specialty doesn’t have to cause Gaava. It is a Midda.

There is nothing wrong with knowing, and even saying, that you have a specialty. Some people boast because they think it will attract attention or friends. That’s not necessarily Gaava, although it is foolish. The main idea in the mind of someone with this Midda is the emphasis in his mind of the term ‘me’, and how he positions that with ‘people’. Sure it helps him prop up his fluffy seat if he has a specialty to point to, but the specialty is not inherently a Gaava causing virus.

Because you feel like you were “caught” eating. Everyone diets today, whether necessary or not. Eating is bad. Think to yourself, what is the feeling of being seen eating? What is it that you shy of? Do you feel it doesn’t look neat, or that it’s cheap to eat from someone else, or just the fact that you are eating?

I’ve seen the pointing with the pinky but I never noticed the kissing part. The Medrash that Jothar pointed out actually says that Hashem has Nachas from the pointing although it is course, as ItcheSrulik pointed out. Pointing with a pinky would make a good compromise.

What do you mean by “should not have children”? That might fall into the same category of Chizkiyahu and Menashe. There are methods of selecting cells, which involves heavy rabbinic consultation.

A Potch has nothing to do with hurt. It is a physical message. The message goes over well enough when it is a simple tap on the hand. Most of the effect is the threat and lead up. That can be applied to other things as well. You can threaten them that if they continue to do whatever then you’ll actually be upset.

A brother of mine, who raised his whole family to love each other, had to once admonish his daughter. All he said was that he was surprised she behaived that way and she cried bitterly. The extremes are what you make them to be.

    Yes you, obviously.

Am yisroel, your poem reads so naturally that it’s easy to miss the fact that it’s a poem.

I don’t often right poems, and definitely not emotional ones. But for the sake of introducing another attitude I’ll dedicate one to the cause:

Was I really smooth and round

       Not this scraggly shriveled thing

Was I at all more profound

Like the kind of thing that make poets sing

It’s so hard to face the present

       With that glamorous past

Like a squire becoming a peasant

And yet it all happened so fast

So dark and damp, at times muddy

There’s a lad stepping above here

I’m sure he can’t see me, now could he

Not in this shape even if he’s near

In case you haven’t figured it out

I was placed on soft top soil

I’m waiting my turn to sprout

That would be worth all my toil

Now the sun has come out to shine

The day after a pleasant rain

It sure is a pleasure of mine

It all was to my benefit and gain

First a seed will decay and rot

When it seems like it all disappeared

Only then bursts forth the full shot

Assisted by the One who had cared

The Avos were not Mechuyav to keep any Mitzvos of the future. Although it was something they liked to do, they didn’t forgo the needs of the time for a Mitzva of the future.

The Ramban says they only kept the Mitzvos while in Eretz Yisroel. The Maharal says they only kept Mitzvos Asei.

They do seem to have a different status, since when we reference the four Imahos, we are talking about Sarah, Rivka, Rochel and Leah. They were Tzidkanios but obviously a different status.

There are four people with the name Rav: The Amora Rav, the Baal Hatanya (De Rahv), the Brisker Rov (De Rov or Ghuv), and Ren Yoshe Ber (the Rav). The latter is differenciated from the Baal Hatanya by the fact that one uses the American ‘a’ as in ‘are’ while the other uses ‘a’ as in ‘Mamish’.

I haden’t really noticed this phenomenon. However, I don’t think it is Ek Velt. Do you really think that for an observer there is such a difference between 2 inches under and 2 inches over? Staring is Assur even at a pinky. You have to dress Tzniusdik, and you did. The only Tznius issues that bother me are the Emporer’s Tights and skirts that are, I guess, border line knee high. Both of these stand out without looking for it.

When you started the discussion I was under the impression that you go to a Yeshiva that is more Yeshivish than your upbringing. In that case, there is no greater point to bring up other than that you want to fit in with your crowd. If that is not the case, and you just like the idea of a hat, perhaps you should try to understand what your father is trying to convey to you. It really is silly to just put on a hat because of what you like about it, when it will make you stand out.

You mention the idea of the mindset it will give you by Davening, and the seriousness it impresses upon you. Don’t think you won’t get used to it. After a while it becomes like any other clothing, unless you reserve it for the occasion. Remember, when in Rome you do as the Romans do.

I put it in quotes for a reason. It was to take the place of two paragraphs. Most people understood just that. You either didn’t get it or just like having fun.

Did your father just dismiss it off hand, or did you already have a meaningful discussion? Does he realize how strongly you want it? Do you actually associate with a different crowd than your father, or is he right that you might come across as silly and stand out? Is this the only difference between you and your father?

There are many factors that could affect the correct approach.

    zahavasdad,

Not always does turning around a sentence prove a point. When someone is asking how he can convince his father to agree with him Kibud Av does not come in. If someone tells his father he wants to ‘downgrade’ that is indeed alarming. If he asks advice how to convince his father to agree, the response would be to get his father to face the facts that he is not following his father’s path. Obviously, that doesn’t go easily if it wasn’t noticed until then.

It shouldn’t be such a big deal to explain that you simply want to fit in with your crowd. He says it’s silly, but that’s for his crowd.

I just wonder if you ‘Kibud Av’ guys would say the same if he wanted to wear a red tie. There’s something about ‘Frum’ that agitates people.

It most definitely should be different for a woman. Since she is not Mechyav in any particular Tefilla, she can’t Daven two Shmone Esreis to make up for it. Just like we don’t make up for skipping Yala Veyavo in Maariv.

Englishman, our society is actually somewhat hypocritical on this issue. On the one hand, they’ll throw the guy into jail for decades. On the other hand, real infidelity is just something to tease someone about.

Modern society punishes based on the need to deter, not what is actually earned. You can get a harsher punishment for borrowing too much from the bank than for a murder. In times of Beis Din, when they saw the need, they were also capable of punishing extra harsh punishments for a deterence.
