From “The View of Modern Science” (in the article “Heliocentrism” on Wikipedia):

The thinking that the heliocentric view was also not true in a strict sense was achieved in steps. That the Sun was not the center of the universe, but one of innumerable stars, was strongly advocated by the mystic Giordano Bruno. Over the course of the 18th and 19th centuries, the status of the Sun as merely one star among many became increasingly obvious. By the 20th century, even before the discovery that there are many galaxies, it was no longer an issue.

Even if the discussion is limited to the solar system, the sun is not at the geometric center of any planet’s orbit, but rather at one focus of the elliptical orbit. Furthermore, to the extent that a planet’s mass cannot be neglected in comparison to the Sun’s mass, the center of gravity of the solar system is displaced slightly away from the center of the Sun. (The masses of the planets, mostly Jupiter, amount to 0.14% of that of the Sun.) Therefore a hypothetical astronomer on an extrasolar planet would observe a “wobble” in his perception of the Sun’s motion.

Giving up the whole concept of being “at rest” is related to the principle of relativity. While, assuming an unbounded universe, it was clear there is no privileged position in space, until postulation of the special theory of relativity by Albert Einstein, at least the existence of a privileged class of inertial systems absolutely at rest was assumed, in particular in the form of the hypothesis of the luminiferous aether. Some forms of Mach’s principle consider the frame at rest with respect to the masses in the universe to have special properties.

Modern use of geocentric and heliocentric

In modern calculations, the origin and orientation of a coordinate system often have to be selected. For practical reasons, systems with their origin in the mass, solar mass or in the center of mass of solar system are frequently selected. The adjectives may be used in this context. However, such selection of coordinates has no philosophical or physical implications.

zachkessin: So let us hear your point-by-point scientific refutation of the points and quotes made by the scientists. There is quite a bit of scientific proofs cited in this thread, brought against your position. Please don’t leave out any of the scientific and physics points made, by brushing them aside as a misunderstanding or the like; be specific and responsive to the points.

ulisis, Why r u afraid to “get into the specifics” of how this explanation of relativity is inapplicable here? I find it extremely convincing, and I have a strong background in advanced science and physics.

If you disagree, refute it scientifically point-by-point (as hard as that will be). There are quite a few extremely strong and convincing points made by joseph on the preceding page.

It is quite telling about those that see the Torah mehalach as not being derech eretz’dik. These are the same folks that refer to those that follow the Torah as boorish, ill-mannered, obnoxious, etc. They apply these derogatory labels to those not in accordance with their left-wing ideologies. They only see, and indeed seek, any negative incidents to use as a sledgehammer against Torah followers.

I find it so curious that whenever a guy wants to find a “legitimate” excuse to not act in accordance with the Torah, he mockingly (i.e. letzanus) refers to the “bechukoseihem lo seleichu” or other Torah concepts. Good manners are, and should be, universal, per the Torah. Men considered as “stronger” than women, or their protectors, is another “bechukoseihem” idea and has nothing to do with manners or our Mesorah. So it doesn’t makes sense that they should treat them “deferentially”.

If you are going to find non-halachic reasons to justify calling Torah behavior “boorish”, I imagine Hashem is NOT pleased.

I’ve seen you attack posters in other threads. So please spare us your righteous indignation. When you slyly refer to the “latest and faddish chumros” you are attcking the Gedolim. Who do you think establishes the chumros? Not Yankel Doe. It is you who should aplogize to every Jew who follows these chumros, and more importantly the Gedolim who established them.

Josh: Apparently you prefer the hate-mongering YU’niks who have a dime a dozen blogs who’s entire geshmak in living is to attack Raabonim, Gedolim and plain ordinary Torah observant Yidden as well as various chumros etc. The fact of the matter is those Jews who are stringent with tznios are also stringent with Choshen Mishpat as well.

gavra_at_work: When left-of-center people like yourself try to shut up anyone who they disagree with, like you did in a previous thread telling someone to not post anything in the thread after you offered your diatribe, you discredit yourself and your entire left-of-center philosophy.

No one here, not a single poster, said every Jewish woman must stop driving. Not one. Its the mo types that cannot tolerate that there are Kehilos Kedoshim that uphold these lofty standards as per the directives of their Gedolim.

gavra_at_work, Again this is my point exactly. You are entirely free to decline to respond to an issue. It is your prerogative. Please provide the same courtesy to other posters, and do not insist they must be responsive to your demands – whether to respond to your inquires or to not post on a thread. Additionally, I notice you are a frequent poster here, and I congratulate you on all the spare time you can afford, nevertheless I was quite surprised that you initiated a personal attack in your comment – the very tactic you have decried. I expected more from you gavra_at_work. I also expect a better attitude in future conversations.

gavra, you are free of course to decline to respond to Doc or my own points, which is precisely my point: Don’t insist others must respond. I’ll assume you have come to the realization that the Rishonim are correct, and you are mistaken, not the Rishonim.

As far as this ring discussion, a Jew should not be flirting with others in the office, Gentile or Jew, regardless of his marital status, but kal vchomer if he is married. If someone feels the need for a shmira for himself, let him wear a nametag on his jacket or shirt pocket that states “I am married.” Unusual? Sticks out? Certainly less so than a Jewish man wearing a ring.

Feif Un, Unfortunately you seem to knock the Torah at every which opportunity. You wrote that “Judaism is supposed to be based on what we learn from our parents and grandparents, build on the traditions of previous generations. Let’s follow the traditions of our grandparents.” Yet you admitted you yourself disposed of the traditions of your parents, grandparents, and previous generations. You previously stated you discarded your parents, grandparents, and previous generations mode of dress. You replaced their hat with your ring. Where are you practicing what you preach?

gavra_at_work, Where is it written in the holy grail of “Netiquette” that one must respond to every inquiry? You deny posters the right to make a point and move on? Who is bound to this so-called “Netiquette”? And Doc makes a good point that you neither initiated this thread nor administer this site. Why do you not trust in the good job the mods and editor is accomplishing in posting only appropriate material, that you find it necessary to tell another poster off, not to post? Nor do I see you responding to his point that perhaps the quotes from Rishonim that you saw were incorrect, and the Rishonim quoted their contemporaries correctly.

    gavra_at_work,

Too sharp? Perhaps in response to your sharp original post. Rephrase? sure.

You say that YOU think its hearsay because YOU didn’t hear Rav Miller zt’l say it? Do you say that about everything YOU didn’t personally hear? Rav Miller said it, and its on tape. Why do you have trouble accepting what multiple people have heard from Rav Miller?

The other point was simply you seem to have a *lot* of free time at_work, based on your numerous posts, reading time required, and the fact its literally spread out widely across the spectrum from nine am till five pm. You seem to have a lot of free time that your boss pays you for to go on yw.

Optimum is only in NY (and surrounding areas.) Its a trademark online service of cablevision, and no other internet company can use it. Unless you hired them to rum a transatlantic cable from America to Ireland…

And gavra_at_work, since you are hard at work at knocking off other posters, how do you explain your attack on what Rav Miller zt’l said. He said black and white that having a tv will lead to the loss of olam habo, no ifs ands or buts, or any qualifications. So who are you to say you don’t believe he said that (as multiple people on ywn itself bore witness), as you stated on another thread? Go to your local Torah Tape library to hear it for yourself. Or will you refuse to believe your ears as well? And it doesn’t matter if you had a family member who knew Rav Miller zt’l in Rugby. Even if you yourself knew. He said it openly and unashamedly.

On another pertinent matter, how do you seem to have posting time available 9-5? Does your boss permit personal use? Is he aware? Are you truly so free all day allowing you all this free time? Or are you using personal time on the boss’ cheshbon?

Feif Un,Where did you learn evasion so well? For the umpteenth time you are being told that nowhere in the takana does it ban a site such as yw that is filtered. It does NOT ban filtered access for use on a Torah site, or personal e-mail, etc. even if it is not for business use. Nowhere does it say anything of the like.
