akuperma: The days that secular Jews governed New York are long gone. These days the frum are a powerful voice in both the city and state level in New York. The entire New York State annual budget was held up a couple months ago until they could insert a provision into it protecting Yeshivos from governmental interference mandating specific secular studies requirements, to take a recent example. The governor has multiple times vetoed legislation that the little village of Kiryas Yoel were the only ones objecting to. The mayor of America’s largest city routinely caters to the needs of the frum community, including having eliminated a city health department regulation on Bris Mila, not to mention many financial benefits granted.

Before WWII Torah Judaism in America was desolate.

“And there was a time in this country when some of even the most Orthodox women didn’t cover their hair. It only really became accepted by all after frum refugees started coming here after WWII.”

And there was a time in this country when some of even the most Orthodox men and women wore shatnes. And then along came that pesky frum Holocaust refugee from Vienna after WWII, Joseph Rosenberger, and started Shatnes Labs in Williamsburg and it only then really became accepted by all to not wear Shatnes.

Like the m’doraisa prohibiting wearing Shatnes there’s also a m’doraisa prohibiting married women from going out with their hair uncovered. Even if in America, before the gedolim from Europe came to these shores and set things straight, there was widespread violations of these prohibitions.

Redleg, it is prohibited to do anything thàt’ll result in romantic feelings. As such it is impermissible for a man and a woman to have a close friendly relationship.

Regarding Rav Moshe, what he paskens is that it is prohibited for a male and female to be friends. No one disputes this halacha. The only machlokes is whether the prohibition is a m`doraia or whether it is “only” a severe rabbinic prohibition. No one at all disputes that it is prohibited.

Chasidishe Yeshivos generally have very low tuition.

Yeshivishe Yeshivos generally have a mid-range tuition

Modern Orthodox Yeshivos generally have very high tuition (that compares to high-end secular private schools.)

Phil, thank you for the correction about the CC’s second rebbetzin. She was married previously but she was young when marrying the much older Chofetz Chaim. In fact she survived WWII and lived in America after the war and her kever is in Queens.

Regarding the Ribnitzer Rebbe, I believe his second rebbetzin, who was far younger than him, was never married before marrying the Ribnitzer nor after he was niftar.

Aside from any derech halimud consideration, Brisk learns on a much higher level than the average Yeshiva. Whether quality, quantity and/or the level and seriousness of the bochorim themselves.

It’s funny how Midwest2 is worried about loshon hora about Baltimore when as recently as a few days ago he had no compunctions doing the same about Lakewood, Brooklyn and Monsey.

    Midwest2:

    A. Your first concern is no different whether matching a divorced guy with a divorced girl or a divorced guy with a never married girl or a never married guy with a divorced girl.

Do you generically worry any divorced girl may have been abusive?

    C. Who said he’s davka looking for an never bmarried girl? He may be open to a previously married girl or a never married one.

Additionally, according to Jewish tradition there’s a positive benefit to marrying a never married girl. So that is a good train he may be looking for such. Furthermore, it is a positive commandment to have children. That may be another reason.

The Chofetz Chaim and the Ribnitzer Rebbe, to take two recent examples that come to mind, married young never married women when they were in their old age. And the CC had more children.

takah: I find much joy in it. And it isn’t just Baltimore, it is the Orthodox world throughout the US, Israel and Europe.

It sure beats American Orthodoxy’s straddling the left in the prewar and immediate postwar periods.

For arguments sake. Let’s assume the answer is, “it’s muttar”. Should you? Just because you may, doesn’t mean you must.

Why in this case not, any less than parking in any other public parking spot? An illegal driveway, by definition, is a public parking spot.

Am I greatly inconveniencing a particular person for no justifiably important reason? If yes, don’t park.

What if by ever parking in a public parking spot in front of someone’s home you greatly inconvenience him by forcing him to park in a public parking spot further from his home. Should you never park in any public spot in front of someone’s home? Why should it change if the homeowner created an illegal driveway out of the public parking spot in front of his home?

Plus those communities have, by very very far, the strongest, most pervasive and most varied frum Jewish chesed and help organizations, gemachs, etc.
