zahavasdadParticipant
There is plenty of praise, They do tend to call chassim Pius people for example.
There was also lots of praise when that little boy was lost in Kiryat Joel, It was all over the news and they said how the whole community was looking for it.
zahavasdadParticipantIt wasnt my friend who made that statement, It was the “Rav” they sent her to.
zahavasdadParticipantI think maybe 6 months ago, maybe there was a chance, but gasoline was poured on the fire.
Had I known the truth I would have begged my friend to ease up on the chumras (at least for his wife, but instead she was told if you dont follow our commuiities “customs” aka chumras you might as well be a schvarzer in the street. She tried to keep up, but just gave up.
Compromise has become a dirty word, people think if you compromise you are giving in, but when you take an all or nothing approach, it works sometimes and others it fails.
zahavasdadParticipantThere is no such thing as a Chiloni COMMUNITY, there are Chilonim, but they are not associated with each other in any other way.
Unlike the Charedi community where you might say the Satmar, Belz or Yerushalmi community. When someone says they are Satmar they are saying they are part of the satmar community, when someone says they are Chiloni they are simply saying they are not religious.
The charedi want to be seen as a community, and when they look good , it works for them, but when one charedi does something wrong, it looks bad on the entire community.
zahavasdadParticipantWhere did I make up the story
I posted where to get it. Some do not like the NY Post, but It was clearly there.
zahavasdadParticipantGoq, they are only banned by insiders, Outsiders can and do have them
zahavasdadParticipantBy you statment, nothing is debateable , Why even have the coffee room. In fact why even discuss anything anywhere.
zahavasdadParticipantNot
The problem is people do not mix and discuss topics anymore.People tend to associate with like minded people. The only exception is the internet where people from all walks will come together and discuss things with different viewpoints. Since many do not use general sites like FB, YWN is the only place they might hear someone with a differnt view , so it is the proper place
zahavasdadParticipantIn todays society most people have become “reporters” anything that happens people will use social media to report it.
People will facebook, tweet or youtube events as they occur. Its become much harder for the “media” to have bias. In fact the media itself uses social media to get facts about current news. The media cannot have as much bias as before as there likely is video evidence of the event.
One should always remember Hashem is watching everything you do, but that can sometimes get stale . But today its very real. If you are rude , nasty or mistreat someone, someone else nearby might have his smartphone and video the whole incident and post it in social media. Someone is watching you.
In the charedi world there isnt this message and they dont seem to understand this. We are not living in a ghetto with walls anymore. When a charedi is yelling at soldier, I assure you someone else is nearby yanking out his smartphone and video taping it and posting it somewhere. The charedi world should take this as chizuk and perhaps see its internal issues, but that have decided to blame the outside instead of the inside.
zahavasdadParticipantRF actually understands my point
And Kol Yisroel arevin Zeh Lozeh is exactly my point. I contantly bring up the twizzlers because frankly it really isnt an important issue (I dont even eat them) and isnt really threatening to anyone.
But I can tell you I know of people who went OTD because of Chumras , Bans, etc
You can say that you like the ban and thats your right, but once you impose on others thats another story. What if someone wants to ride a bike, are you gonna say the Rebbe said no so you cant ride.
Im sure you heard about the OTD woman who was on Katie Couric who said she had bought a blouse that was a little too tight for her parents taste and was thrown out of the house.I dont know what too tight means, but the woman is totally OTD and goes on national TV to say how bad charedim are. Was it worth a Chumra to get rid of this souls.
There is another OTD Satmar woman who hated having her hair Shaved, She now goes off all over the internet about Hair shaving.
I am sure you all heard of Yaffed, it was all over the news how Charedim dont educate their children. It was not a kiddush hashem.
And thats right Kol Bnei Yisroel Arevim Zeh Lo-Zeh unessasary Bans do not create a kiddish Hashem and may even cause Averiahs because some at some point say Dayenu and just leave.
zahavasdadParticipantWOW, there is well known Anti-Kiruv organization here in NY. They help people “escape” Ultra Orthodoxy.
From what I have been able to gather a rabbi wont help. it seems she was overwhelmed with the tough life some communities endure and the chumras overwhelmed her. She did go to a rabbi and he made it worse, the community is known to be one of the most right-wing and any diversion is seen as insubordiantion.
I really think its a lost cause. Its really been bothering me for a while now.
If you have ever watched some of my posts,I have generally rallied against going too far to the right. It has been my fear that people would get turned off to Judaism because of it. I had heard of people who left because of it, but its been mostly hearsay and I had not been able to verify it. This is the first person I know first hand.
zahavasdadParticipantOn your tax returns, you are not allowed to deduct the entire $600, You are given an amount that the item is worth and you can deduct the rest (ie cost of cruise actually costs $300, you can only deduct $300)
I dont know if Tzedkah is counted the same, $300 is your own money and $300 is for Tzedkah
zahavasdadParticipantThe reality is people rarely support Tzedakahs out of their realm. How many yeshiva dinners get people who have nothing to do with the Yeshiva to go?
Such as a cruise might get people who are not invovled with the yeshiva to at least take a look and find out more
zahavasdadParticipantMazal Tov
zahavasdadParticipantIts a fundraiser , the idea is to raise money
zahavasdadParticipantPeople here seem to condemn other communities that they have no contact for doing things they dont agree with especially those who veer (certainly in my opinion) too far to the left. Im sure it doesnt affect you if a certain places certain kulas are taking like Chalav Stam.
However if you take that stance be aware that communities that take on chumras deserve the same constructive critism as veering from the torah and perhaps create more damage to the entire community.
zahavasdadParticipantI found out recently the spouse of a good charedi friend of mine has been secretly attending meetings of a well known anti-kiruv organization.
They seemed like such a nice couple and his devestation has become my devestation. I dont know what to say.
I knew people before who had gone OTD before, but this one has hurt the most.
zahavasdadParticipantMany funraising diners cost $250 a person, or $500 a couple.
$600 for a cruise is not so far fetched
zahavasdadParticipantYou can google New York Post Orhtodox Bike Ban to get more info
While some will give answer, well its the New York Post, I had it independently verified. It was not sensationalized. It was fairly accurate
zahavasdadParticipantBoys were also forbidden and threatend with expulsion from Yeshiva if they rode bikes
zahavasdadParticipantI know quite a few of unemployed or under-employed Lawyers
A bunch of them do Discovery on temp basis (Basically going through mounds of papers) very boring
zahavasdadParticipant@JF I posted once, but YWN crashed and double posted it.
Maybe my point is being lost, there seems to be an obsession in some communities over an ‘iPhone” . There was a article on YWN about a “segula” for more children if you smash an iPhone. YWN editor commented that the ceremony was videoed on a smart phone.
The joke seems to be, Im Ok ,I dont have an iPhone I have an Android.
There seemed to be name calling at The Grave of Rabbi Meir Baal Hanass for those who owned one, even if they didnt carry it inside.
I think there was a psak a few months ago where someone damaged an iPhone and was not required to pay to fix it since it was trief. (Or something similar to that).
zahavasdadParticipantIt was truly disheartening some of the comments posted.
Some people did not know who Rav Nissim Karelitz is and there was a tremendous lack of kavod
zahavasdadParticipantIf you dont want to discuss the Takana, that is fine.
You are allowed to agree with it
zahavasdadParticipantI cant give outside links, but it was posted on another frum blog
zahavasdadParticipantWhy is it not considered hateful to discuss a Kula but it is hateful to discuss a chumra
zahavasdadParticipantThe ban has nothing to do with Shabbos, I am talking about weekday Bike Riding.
zahavasdadParticipantYou just cant ban something, you need a reason for it. Its just as assur to ban something permitted as it is to allow something assur
zahavasdadParticipantBoys and Females
During the Week, normal bike riding for a kid.
Adult Females are banned as well. I dont know about Adult Males
zahavasdadParticipantThey did tell me directly. They actually did not like the ban, but since they were part of these communities they were forced to obey it.
They were not satisfied with the reason.
zahavasdadParticipantIts not hearsay, Ive heard directly from people in these communities
zahavasdadParticipantIn some communities (I think mostly chassidish) they have banned bike riding for both boys and girls

July 26, 2013 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm in reply to: Why are there religious Jews who are pro-gay marriage? #968452zahavasdadParticipantOne of the 2 cases went before the Supreme court invovled a Lesbian from NYC.
Her “friend” of about 40 years had died and because they were not legally married she owed a Tax Bill of $376,000 (Or somehting close to that)
She sued that if they were legally married federally she would not owe the money (They were married in Canada and NY at the time recognized marriaged performed elsewher) Since Spouces can inheit money tax free
July 26, 2013 3:22 pm at 3:22 pm in reply to: Why are there religious Jews who are pro-gay marriage? #968425zahavasdadParticipantFor the record Marrying your first cousin is only legal in 12 States (New York is one of them)
July 26, 2013 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm in reply to: Why are there religious Jews who are pro-gay marriage? #968417zahavasdadParticipantPolygamy is not against the Torah
Its only illegal for Ashkenazim because of Rabbenu Gershom.
It was practiced by Some Sephardim (especially Tamanim) until they emigrated to Israel after WW II
zahavasdadParticipantIke Davis is jewish too, His mother is Jewish.
But Ryan Braun is the Hebrew Hammer
zahavasdadParticipantIve heard Anthony Weiners mother isnt jewish either
zahavasdadParticipantIf it doesnt have at least 3 Pizza Stores and a chinese take out then it doesnt count as a jewish community
zahavasdadParticipantHow about learning how to learn a blatt gemorah instead?
M-samech Chasson V’Kallah is a Mitzvah too
zahavasdadParticipantIts actually a bigger issue in Japan, the Emperor there is a line for 1400 years. The son of the Emperor has 2 daughters and no male heir
zahavasdadParticipantNope
FYI They changed the law in England and no matter which gender it is , It will be direct in line to be the Monarch . It used to be younger brothers had precidence over older sisters. Not anymore. If its a girl, She will be queen no matter how many susequent brothers she has
July 21, 2013 2:55 pm at 2:55 pm in reply to: LET US PROTEST: Major Kosher Supermarkets In Catskills Refuse To Use Price Tags #966767zahavasdadParticipantI think its the Law in New York State that all prices must be listed either on the item itself or right below it on the shelf (Thats what most stores do)
zahavasdadParticipantOne thing I have learned recently is people are different.
You cant cookie cutter people. For example if someone hates learning Gemorah, Making them learn 10 hours a day is a recipe for disaster.
You have to properly balance kids. If the bocher for example hates learning , begins to slack off and the Rebbe Slaps him. There is your road to OTD.
If the Girl is dressed properly tzniut but told she cant laugh in public, hears something funny and then laughs and is publically humilated. You have sent someone on the road to OTD.
Privately Im sure you can think of yourself. Speak to your kids try to figure out what borders are acceptable and what are not BEFORE everything collapses.
zahavasdadParticipantIts not true nobody knows why
Every case is different, but there is a reason
zahavasdadParticipantmatan1
Read his book
zahavasdadParticipantIts on my bucket list to be Hypotized
From what I heard not everyone can be hynpotized and I always wanted to know if I was one of them
zahavasdadParticipantI think some here need to read Some of the new Seforim by Rav Avigdor Miller and his opinions on the topic
There is a new series out about his Thursday night Chat session where its discussed
zahavasdadParticipantOpossums are marcupials that live in New York City
zahavasdadParticipantRav Edelstein has condemed the attack and asked for the Eidah to do the Same.
