In the new book on the Klausenburger Rebbe, “The Klausenburger Rebbe Building Torah and Emunah in the Aftermath of the Holocaust”, the famous story is told about when (the then) General Eisenhower visited the DP-camp “Feldafing” just after liberation in 1945. The book (pp. 170-171) recounts the quiet battle between the majority of the survivors, and some of the secular Jews who represented various Zionist and socialist organizations:

“majority of the survivors felt it would be appropriate for the Rebbe to address the ceremony as the voice of the survivors, the secular Jews who represented various Zionist and socialist organizations refused to let him speak unless he promised that he would not mention G-d’s Name, or anything related to religion.” (p. 170-171).

The Rebbe did not pay any attention to these terms of the secular people, and said that he urged the Yidden not to forget their past and from where they came from. Not to forget that they were Jews and to always remain loyal Yidden.

The biography from ArtScroll quotes from the Chassidische newspaper “Sanz” (Issue 487). Does anyone know where to find this issue online? Is it available online?

The Australian Jewish News, 14 December 1945⁩, has a detailed account about Eisenhower’s tour of Feldafing and his meeting with the Klausenberger Rebbe. You can find it in the Sefriya Leumi’s website. (Of course none of what’s described above actually happen – the Klausenberger Rebbe wasn’t the Rabbi to give a speech, he just presented bread and salt to the general as per the old minhag). Did the quiet battle you describe occur before or after the whole shul broke out in singing Hatikva? lol…

Shm@l is correct in the version he quotes from the new book. What the austrailian jewish news recounts is as much revisionist history as the arabs claiming there never was a temple on har habayis. I personally have heard the story of the Rebbes meeting with general Eisenhower from my fathers friends- survivors, who were actually there. There also has been found old records of the Rebbe ztl activities in the dp camps and a picture was found of that very drasha where the rebbe put on a talis before speaking.

Regarding the Sanz newspaper, you will not find it online. it is mailed out to subscribers only. I will give you the magazines email and you can contact them directly for a copy of that article/issue and for any questions you may have. I’m sure they will be happy to answer them. though you might have to write in hebrew.

Thanks @SchnitzelBigot for pointing to another source. I was, however, specifically looking for “Sanz” newspaper. Do you know if this can be found online?

There are numerous holocaust survivors, who were in the Feldafing DP camp in Germany after the war, testified to this story of the Klausenberger Rebbe occurring in Feldafing/

I have a follow-up question if I am allowed. The book recalls: “majority of the survivors felt it would be appropriate for the Rebbe to address the ceremony as the voice of the survivors, the secular Jews who represented various Zionist and socialist organizations refused to let him speak unless he promised that he would not mention G-d’s Name, or anything related to religion.” (p. 170-171).

I was wondering what these Zionist and socialist organaziations were that refused the Rebbe to let him speak about G-d and use G-ds name. Why would they not accept the Rebbe using G-ds name?
