But more often that not, it is against the torah to live by the rule when in rome, do as the romans do.

“in Rome do as the Romans”

Rabbi Akiva would have been a pagan had he subscribed to this philosophy.

I dont understand the issue here. When shopping likovod shabbos it is natural that women dress in bigdei shabbos. Anything less would be a pigam in kvod shabbos.

Just curious. Which of the sheva mitzvos was violated by the “nurse” that she is being labeled a murderer. Callous, despicable, heartless ok. Murderer?

“even if it would be a 5% chance you wouldn’t want it for your relative?”

whoever put the woman in this particular facility signed a form that stated very clearly the personnel at the facility would NOT do anything more than call 911. perhaps you and I and all those who are reading this would want more for their relative. it is obvious that this family did not.

Perhaps you couldn’t tell the designer, but I sure was able to spot a $1000 suit from 50 feet away, at the Saks 5th Ave outlet in Jersey Gardens Mall last year (actually it was marked down from $2799 to $1499).

Theories are just that until put into practice. I have yet to hear of a single yeshiva that encourages its bachurim to adopt this new fangled idea. I have sons that are in beis medrash and not a single rebbe has advised any of my sons to do anything remotely suggesting getting married at 22 or 23.

It should be pointed out this this “nurse” was not a nurse.

This facility is what is called an Independent Living Facility, not an Assisted Living Facility. One difference between the 2 is what the facility personnel are trained to deal with and do.

Anywhere in this story, has it been reported how long it actually took for EMTs to arrive once call was placed?

disable sms and internet on the account. as for the account password, do the same thing you would with the password to internet access on your computer so if you have the yetser hara to enable these functions, you wont have password to do so. of course, there are ways around this, but if you want to account for every possibility, the best option is, dont buy a cell phone.

1: Perhaps he goes to work despite being sick, because he feels he has no choice but to.

2: Perhaps he isnt sick, but sick and tired (of learning with you) and he really doesnt know how to tell you without hurting your feelings so he is using this as an excuse.

3: Perhaps he really has a hard time getting up in the morning, despite a wonderful chavrusa and chabura and he needs a little chizuk in this area.

If this has been going on for say a week or two, I would tell him straight out, that you will be starting with a new chavrusa (or looking for one depending on how close you are or how easy it is to get a new one) while he is out sick and once he is better, he can join the 2 of you. In the meantime, since it is only a couple of mornings I would go with option 1.

As for home made food, surely a talmid chacham like you who has it all figured out is aware of the gemara that tells us of the 2 amoraim who exchanged seudos with each other to be yotze mishloach manos. Unless of course you are learning pshat that they exchanged takeout?

It is also “very seductive” to project that one is the ideal yeshiva bachur or bais yackov girl in order to facilitate ones shidduch.

It CAN be THE cause. It MAY be a contributing cause. It might have nothing at all to do with it. Every case is different. Social media is “seductive”, but there is also plenty in print media, as well as audio/visual media that is seductive. The common denominator is the internet and the privacy it affords even in ones own home. 50 years ago, it was a motel 150 miles away from home. The underlying reasons may not have changed, technology has helped speed up the process by which some of those underlying problems come to the fore.

Social media is an easy and convenient whipping boy. It is easy to find circumstance where social media was a major factor, it is not intellectually honest to then project this problem on all, or most situations.

Lets put the halachic inquiry on the side for a moment. My nephew is getting married and I am told there will be a mitzva tantz, and of course as a “choshuve” uncle I will be “called up”. Coming from a family of litvaks, what does it mean “called up” by a mitzva tantz. what am I expected to do, or not do. The only marching orders I have from my wife are, “dont make a fool out of yourself”. I am also told that I should be sure to “tip the badchan”. How much of a tip do you give? why would I give him a tip anyway, I dont tip the waiters by the meal, or the musicians after the dancing. Is the badchan hired and paid by someone, or does the bulk of his wages come from tips like the coat room attendant and the valet parking guys? Does it depend on the stature of the badchan, does it depend on what he says about me and how much chanifa comes my way before he calls me up? My preference is to leave after birchas hamazon, but for matter of shalom bayis, I have no choice but to stay and (hopefully) enjoy the festivities.

“which still applies despite the stated reason no longer applying.”

The way it was explained to me, Rav moshe Z’l never said the reason for the gezeira does not apply, rather, the government rules, laws and oversight satisfies the requirement of chazal.

“Basicly the difference is that for CY milk, the mashgiach inspects and seals the tankers.”

You sure? How can the mashgiach be sure that what is in the tanker is milk of a cow and not from a horse, or even a goat? How does he know it isnt cloudy water or even soy milk? Surely there is more than just inspecting and sealing a tanker.

“While in Saudi Arabia and other countries they do.”

Rav Moshe issued his psak for the USA, not Saudi Arabia.

Why are people putting all DD into the same basket. DD is a franchise operation. A DD on one block and the DD on the very next block might be owned by two different people, one who misleads people and one who does not. Is there a din “chalav shnisalem min ha’ayin” that one must suspect a switcheroo where there is no reason to believe so? Is it a matter of practice that the coffee pot is washed in the same sink as the dishes the bacon strips were served on, or cooked in? Is this a practice followed in every DD? I know for a fact that this is not the practice at the DD in my neighborhood. When I worked in kashrus, I came across many establishments (usually hotels) that did not wash their coffee pots, or the parts from the machines that brewed the coffee in the same sinks as the other dirty dishes for various reasons (one place washed these pots with the drinking glasses only). If you really want DD and want to be certain about the kashrus of the coffee and everything else in the cup as well, invest $10 on a 4 cup percolator, buy a bag of DD coffee (many flavors have a hechsher), buy whatever milk you normally do, buy any and all flavorings that have a hechsher you are confortable with and enjoy your coffee. Unless you are a rav or a neighborhood posek though, dont go assuring every neighborhood establishment that sells coffee.
