But more often that not, it is against the torah to live by the rule when in rome, do as the romans do.
apushatayidParticipant“in Rome do as the Romans”
Rabbi Akiva would have been a pagan had he subscribed to this philosophy.
March 11, 2013 6:16 pm at 6:16 pm in reply to: People Questioning What Others Wear While Shopping #936048apushatayidParticipantPerhaps it is to impress the “reliable source”.
March 11, 2013 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm in reply to: 50 Y.O. Women Grocery Shopping In 3" Heeled Pumps On A Slushy Thursday Night? #938902apushatayidParticipantI dont understand the issue here. When shopping likovod shabbos it is natural that women dress in bigdei shabbos. Anything less would be a pigam in kvod shabbos.

Excellent question.
March 10, 2013 3:08 am at 3:08 am in reply to: Nurse Refused To Initiate CPR, What Is Your Opinion? #938747apushatayidParticipantJust curious. Which of the sheva mitzvos was violated by the “nurse” that she is being labeled a murderer. Callous, despicable, heartless ok. Murderer?
apushatayidParticipantI think the story is contrived.
March 8, 2013 7:31 pm at 7:31 pm in reply to: Nurse Refused To Initiate CPR, What Is Your Opinion? #938730apushatayidParticipant“even if it would be a 5% chance you wouldn’t want it for your relative?”
whoever put the woman in this particular facility signed a form that stated very clearly the personnel at the facility would NOT do anything more than call 911. perhaps you and I and all those who are reading this would want more for their relative. it is obvious that this family did not.
apushatayidParticipant“And I best most could not indentify one on sight without seeing the label”
Perhaps you couldn’t tell the designer, but I sure was able to spot a $1000 suit from 50 feet away, at the Saks 5th Ave outlet in Jersey Gardens Mall last year (actually it was marked down from $2799 to $1499).
apushatayidParticipanteverything has a label and a designer. it doesnt bother me if your label of choice says marc jacobs, i’ll stick with fruit of the loom.
apushatayidParticipant“hey guyzzzz…just wanted 2 say hi…on a rannndoon thread…btw im looking @ some threads..OMG!! srsly bored ppl!! srry guyzzz…:):):):)!! LOL”
Need I say more?
apushatayidParticipantTheories are just that until put into practice. I have yet to hear of a single yeshiva that encourages its bachurim to adopt this new fangled idea. I have sons that are in beis medrash and not a single rebbe has advised any of my sons to do anything remotely suggesting getting married at 22 or 23.
March 8, 2013 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm in reply to: Nurse Refused To Initiate CPR, What Is Your Opinion? #938726apushatayidParticipantIt should be pointed out this this “nurse” was not a nurse.
This facility is what is called an Independent Living Facility, not an Assisted Living Facility. One difference between the 2 is what the facility personnel are trained to deal with and do.
Anywhere in this story, has it been reported how long it actually took for EMTs to arrive once call was placed?
apushatayidParticipanti think you end up in the twilight zone. not sure.
apushatayidParticipantdisable sms and internet on the account. as for the account password, do the same thing you would with the password to internet access on your computer so if you have the yetser hara to enable these functions, you wont have password to do so. of course, there are ways around this, but if you want to account for every possibility, the best option is, dont buy a cell phone.
apushatayidParticipantI agree. It is pointless.
March 8, 2013 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm in reply to: 50 Y.O. Women Grocery Shopping In 3" Heeled Pumps On A Slushy Thursday Night? #938879apushatayidParticipantHmmm…
You know they are 50 years old because?
You know the heels are 3 inches how?
You know they got dressed up like this for the shopping trip because?
Are you a peeping tom? a yenta? into voyeurism? All of the above?
apushatayidParticipantWhy do you assume his friends work at a law firm on wall street? Perhaps they work behind the deli counter at the wall street deli where polo shirts are appropriate.
apushatayidParticipant“Taka- polo shirts to work? Thats not very professional.”
At what profession are his friends employed that a polo shirt is not very professional?
apushatayidParticipantThey are. The hospital “methodist” is not.
apushatayidParticipantIt is important to debunk silly generalizations.
apushatayidParticipantI wonder what the op will say about those who sport their favorite logo on a yarmulka, he already went after those who sport it on their cap.
apushatayidParticipantThe OP was referring to lakewood wisconsin
apushatayidParticipantTry chabadparkslope.com they are closer to the park near 8th ave, convenient to methodist. They may know of closer minyan.
apushatayidParticipant“how much respect do you think your kids are going to have for you”
Or for the school.
apushatayidParticipantbread and mustard. wash it down with root beer.
apushatayidParticipantThe Pickle Guys in Brooklyn will pickle anything for you. Last time I was in there, they were pickling watermelon and what looked like kumquats (I’m sure this is spelled wrong).
apushatayidParticipant1: Perhaps he goes to work despite being sick, because he feels he has no choice but to.
2: Perhaps he isnt sick, but sick and tired (of learning with you) and he really doesnt know how to tell you without hurting your feelings so he is using this as an excuse.
3: Perhaps he really has a hard time getting up in the morning, despite a wonderful chavrusa and chabura and he needs a little chizuk in this area.
If this has been going on for say a week or two, I would tell him straight out, that you will be starting with a new chavrusa (or looking for one depending on how close you are or how easy it is to get a new one) while he is out sick and once he is better, he can join the 2 of you. In the meantime, since it is only a couple of mornings I would go with option 1.
apushatayidParticipantI have a feeling this will spiral downward quickly and thread should be stopped.
We’ll see. If it spirals, we’ll close it.
apushatayidParticipantI never plan on davening in a public area, and if circumstances compel me to do so, I try to make myself as “small” and out of the way as possible.
apushatayidParticipantcommercial. claussen. freshly picked, the pickle guys.
apushatayidParticipantWhy I continue this disussion with a bored teenager hellbent on making people crazy with stupidiity, I dont know. I guess it beats staring out the window duriing my commute.
February 27, 2013 3:08 am at 3:08 am in reply to: Disturbed by Knight and Castle Guard Costumes #933181apushatayidParticipantThe knights were also drunk. Perhaps we should avoid that too.
apushatayidParticipantPay you back mishloach manos? What does that mean? As for home made food, surely a talmid chacham like you who has it all figured out is aware of the gemara that tells us of the 2 amoraim who exchanged seudos with each other to be yotze mishloach manos. Unless of course you are learning pshat that they exchanged takeout?
apushatayidParticipantIf you need a box drink to help you determine who your real friends are, you need a lot more than a box drink.
February 26, 2013 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm in reply to: Utterly disgusted with the throw up stains on sidewalks! #933227apushatayidParticipantYou can always go up north of 125th street and view the blood stains instead.
apushatayidParticipant“delivering ice cream is not easy”
True. Is why someone on east 3rd in brooklyn brought an ice cream truck to the block and had everyone line up and order what they wanted.
apushatayidParticipantCan someone summarize the various opinions of the poskei coffee room?
apushatayidParticipant“But I am sure you can understand my frustrations when I try to give a thoughtful mishloach manos,”
Can you define a thoughtful mishloach manos?
apushatayidParticipantIt’s not purim. It’s facebook. Maybe It’s facebook on purim. Still waiting for the statistics.
apushatayidParticipantTznius? Based on my observation of one mitzvah tantz there was absolutely nothing, a male, single or married could contort into something untznius, unless said male already had a twisted mind, in which case he shouldnt be out in the street either. I guess, to each their own.
February 21, 2013 4:34 pm at 4:34 pm in reply to: Facebook Is To Blame For Rising Orthodox Jewish Divorce Rate? #935186apushatayidParticipant“Facebook is cited in 1 out of every 5 divorces in the United States, according to the Loyola University Health System.”
A certain one syllable word is cited at even higher percentage than that.
February 21, 2013 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm in reply to: Facebook Is To Blame For Rising Orthodox Jewish Divorce Rate? #935178apushatayidParticipantIt is also “very seductive” to project that one is the ideal yeshiva bachur or bais yackov girl in order to facilitate ones shidduch.
February 21, 2013 3:25 pm at 3:25 pm in reply to: Facebook Is To Blame For Rising Orthodox Jewish Divorce Rate? #935177apushatayidParticipantIt CAN be THE cause. It MAY be a contributing cause. It might have nothing at all to do with it. Every case is different. Social media is “seductive”, but there is also plenty in print media, as well as audio/visual media that is seductive. The common denominator is the internet and the privacy it affords even in ones own home. 50 years ago, it was a motel 150 miles away from home. The underlying reasons may not have changed, technology has helped speed up the process by which some of those underlying problems come to the fore.
Social media is an easy and convenient whipping boy. It is easy to find circumstance where social media was a major factor, it is not intellectually honest to then project this problem on all, or most situations.
apushatayidParticipantso, i went to a chasuna just to see a mitzva tantz and before they began they announced “all bachurim should leave”. why?
apushatayidParticipantLets put the halachic inquiry on the side for a moment. My nephew is getting married and I am told there will be a mitzva tantz, and of course as a “choshuve” uncle I will be “called up”. Coming from a family of litvaks, what does it mean “called up” by a mitzva tantz. what am I expected to do, or not do. The only marching orders I have from my wife are, “dont make a fool out of yourself”. I am also told that I should be sure to “tip the badchan”. How much of a tip do you give? why would I give him a tip anyway, I dont tip the waiters by the meal, or the musicians after the dancing. Is the badchan hired and paid by someone, or does the bulk of his wages come from tips like the coat room attendant and the valet parking guys? Does it depend on the stature of the badchan, does it depend on what he says about me and how much chanifa comes my way before he calls me up? My preference is to leave after birchas hamazon, but for matter of shalom bayis, I have no choice but to stay and (hopefully) enjoy the festivities.
apushatayidParticipant“which still applies despite the stated reason no longer applying.”
The way it was explained to me, Rav moshe Z’l never said the reason for the gezeira does not apply, rather, the government rules, laws and oversight satisfies the requirement of chazal.
apushatayidParticipant“Basicly the difference is that for CY milk, the mashgiach inspects and seals the tankers.”
You sure? How can the mashgiach be sure that what is in the tanker is milk of a cow and not from a horse, or even a goat? How does he know it isnt cloudy water or even soy milk? Surely there is more than just inspecting and sealing a tanker.
apushatayidParticipant“While in Saudi Arabia and other countries they do.”
Rav Moshe issued his psak for the USA, not Saudi Arabia.
Why are people putting all DD into the same basket. DD is a franchise operation. A DD on one block and the DD on the very next block might be owned by two different people, one who misleads people and one who does not. Is there a din “chalav shnisalem min ha’ayin” that one must suspect a switcheroo where there is no reason to believe so? Is it a matter of practice that the coffee pot is washed in the same sink as the dishes the bacon strips were served on, or cooked in? Is this a practice followed in every DD? I know for a fact that this is not the practice at the DD in my neighborhood. When I worked in kashrus, I came across many establishments (usually hotels) that did not wash their coffee pots, or the parts from the machines that brewed the coffee in the same sinks as the other dirty dishes for various reasons (one place washed these pots with the drinking glasses only). If you really want DD and want to be certain about the kashrus of the coffee and everything else in the cup as well, invest $10 on a 4 cup percolator, buy a bag of DD coffee (many flavors have a hechsher), buy whatever milk you normally do, buy any and all flavorings that have a hechsher you are confortable with and enjoy your coffee. Unless you are a rav or a neighborhood posek though, dont go assuring every neighborhood establishment that sells coffee.
