As long as your nails dont hang 4 inches below your knees, they are probably OK.
May 19, 2011 8:34 pm at 8:34 pm in reply to: Anyone see these rediculous "Doomsday" Ads in Subway? #769995apushatayidParticipantMr. Doomsday is part of a larger “church”. Just google Harold Camping. No, he isn’t predicting any fires, just an earthquake. 6pm., but dont hold him to the time, he is only reasonably sure of the time, but the date and what will happen he is certainly sure. From the cnnmoney article about him, the writer seems to imply (it’s what I infer from the article and the way it is written and the things it focuses on) that Mr. Camping will abscond with the church money. According to their IRS filing, they get on avg 18 million dollars a year in donations and account for 8-10 million in expenses.
apushatayidParticipantWant to stand out, go for a 30s style zoot suit 🙂
apushatayidParticipantMDD. I’m not sure where you live and I dont know what men you are talking about. I can only speak about one man, me. Where I live and work, the only women whose makeup attracts my attention are those who wear as much as Bozo the Clown and use similar colors too.
apushatayidParticipantBetter the thread goes OTD than the kids.
apushatayidParticipantWhy wasnt he accepted for this Zman? Is there a finite number seats in the shiur room?
apushatayidParticipantEzrat. You are correct. The boy as well as his parents met with a number of people (including several neighborhood Rabbonim) and it was determined that this course of action is most suited for this boy. Chanoch LiNaar Al Pi Darko means what is best for him, not what everyone else does.
apushatayidParticipant80. You wear a suit every day? Kudos to you 🙂
apushatayidParticipantLike many secular people, they are not looking to protect Freedom of Religion, they are looking to establish Freedom from Religion and along with it it the attempt to eradicate all vestiges of religious practice.
apushatayidParticipantOff topic. If one dressed formally all the time, what special item(s) does he wear for tefillah? shabbos?
apushatayidParticipant“Jeans were created for farmers”. Are jewish farmers allowed to wear jeans?
Do Rabbonim wear pajamas to bed (do they go to bed)?
Do yeshiva bachurim go swimming in their hats and jackets?
Do executives wear suits when vacationing with their families in Disneyland?
Do executives all over the world wear suits? When I traveled to Puerto Rico on business I may have been the only peron on the island wearing a suit jacket and tie (with the possible exception of Rav Zarchi, the chabad shliach and local Rav).
I don’t think the “does a ploni wear such attire” argument get you very far because the answer to that question varies based on the time and place.
apushatayidParticipantNo, the connection is not obvious. Why do you assume that great tzadikim are the only ones who accumulate zchusim for their children? Are you familiar.with the zchusim committee in shamayim and how they operate? Are you privy to how zchusim are accumulated and banked for later generations?
apushatayidParticipantI’ll bite. What is the connection between zchus avos and yichus?
apushatayidParticipantYid. All I’m saying is that not everyone who wears makeup, even lots of it, does so for nefarious reasons.
apushatayidParticipantIf you go back a hundred years, we all come from the same people, Reb and Rebbetzin Yid, Z’l. In fact Z’l is the most common jewish surname.
apushatayidParticipantIt could possibly be true, although let me give you the other side.
I know a 16 year old brooklyn boy who is not in yeshiva this zman (in fact, not since elul zman), askanim were and still are working diligently to open doors for him, and have gotten him a farher in at least 3 different yeshivos. Yet, he is still not in yeshiva. This boy doesn’t want to be in yeshiva. Once his parents came to that realization, they worked with the appropriate people and arranged for someone to learn with him 90 minutes every morning. They hired a tutor to prepare him so that he can take and pass the test to earn his GED and he works locally for 4-5 hours a day.
It is not always the fault of the yeshiva that someone is not enrolled in yeshiva. Perhaps this relative of yours is going through the motions of taking farhers to make his parents happy, but is sabotaging himself purposely at the same time so that he wont be accepted.
May 18, 2011 3:45 pm at 3:45 pm in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767727apushatayidParticipant“As far as the inches, there is no hard halachic number. Some people will need even more than 4″.”
I have a coworker whose skirts practically drag on the floor when she walks, yet when she sits at her desk, that’s not long enough.
In other words, ladies use your judgement what works for you and the way you live your life (IE stationary, constantly on the move, whatever) is how you should dress.
apushatayidParticipantYichus is (unfortunately) important when you want to get your child into the school of your choice.
“my Rebbe in Israel always used to say “If you can’t explain it, it means you don’t fully understand it”
I had a Rebbe who said the same thing, although he was in NY State 🙂
He also used to say (and probably still does – and am probably giving away the Rebbe) Zeh Hachaim, Hachaim lo picnic.
apushatayidParticipantMontauk
apushatayidParticipant(Yes, I learned to keep my mouth shut after this, yes I learned a lesson in being dan likaf zchus, even when it seems farfetched too)
In reference too “wearing a lot of make-up in public is not tsnius for a married woman.” Waiting for the valet after a chasuna I commented to my wife about a woman standing a few feet away from us who was wearing way too much makeup. I said something to the effect of, if she smiles any wider, whole sections of her face will crack off. Unfortunately, I said it a bit too loud and she heard. She pulled my wife to the side and (my wife reports) proceeded to wipe away makeup from a section of her face revealing a large welt.
apushatayidParticipantI don’t start following baseball till after July 4th. They out of it already?
Regarding Sterling. He is a piece of work. Does he still sing “The Grandyman” after a Granderson homerun?
apushatayidParticipantMDD. Again, the gemara discusses HOW the women carried themselves, HOW and why they wore perfume. I am not making a case for emulating such behavior. I am making one argument only. Makeup is not inherently untsnius. Neither is perfume, jewelry or clothing. It is how it is used, applied, worn or carried. To argue from the tanchuma (which is a snippet of a sugya in 6th perek of shabbos) or the gemaras elaboration of pesukim in yeshaya to the contrary, is a distortion of the gemaras.
It goes without saying, that if you believe that any of the aforementioned items are in fact inherently not tsnius, don’t use them. Don’t confuse your beliefs, with halacha though.
Again, I asked for a posek who says “makeup is inherently not tsnius” and the obvious implication that it not be used at all. Since I got answers from sources that include perfumes and jewerly, let me add those to the question as well. In fact, the bnos yerushalayim walked the streets of yerushalayim, are you inferring it is assur for them to do so as well? Where are these poskim? (I have no doubt there is a Rav somewhere who made a takana for his tzibbur regarding these things but it is not my question..)
apushatayidParticipantSo don’t buy a sheitel if you feel it isn’t tznius.
apushatayidParticipant“my sister on more than one occasion was approached by someone at a chasunah and asked if she “was bizy”.”
So was I. Should I start wearing a tallis to weddings? A wedding band? A red sticker on my forehead?
apushatayidParticipant@ Pac-Man. We must have crossed each other.
@ Maishe. So, start a thread on sheitels.
apushatayidParticipantOrach chaim siman shin gimmel.
Looks like the trolls are moving in.
apushatayidParticipantSo, you are interpreting tachshitin as makeup?
apushatayidParticipantI will look into the tanchuma, bli neder, tomorrow morning when I get to shul. I don’t own a medrash tanchuma at home. In the meantime, this tanchuma is brought lihalacha, where?
apushatayidParticipantI will look into the tanchuma, bli neder, tomorrow morning when I get to shul. I don’t own a medrash tanchuma at home. In the meantime, this tanchuma is brought lihalacha, where?
apushatayidParticipantI know what I meant to write, still do.
But, here is take 2.
Makeup is not inherently “untsnius”.
apushatayidParticipantA group of people who feel a certain way about something, do not determine halacha. Make up is not inherently tznius, nor is its use by those not in shidduchim. Being in shidduchim does not automatically confer tznius status on all applications and uses either.
If the above is wrong, please name a posek who said so.
apushatayidParticipantIf there is any laitzanus, it is directed at the notion that “makeup” is inherently not tznius. Remember what the kiyor was made from.
apushatayidParticipant“The consensus was that it is very easy to engage in letzanus on a halachic issue that makes one uncomfortable.”
I readily admit I would be VERY uncomfortable to go out in public wearing makeup.
apushatayidParticipantMake up the 2 hours learning they would miss and take them to the parade.
apushatayidParticipantPacman. And what was the consensus, it it tznius or not to come late to shul? What about applesauce? Tznius or not?
apushatayidParticipantHow do you spell troll?
apushatayidParticipantSo, who will start the thread titled “is it tznius to come late or talk during davening” as requested. I’m not sure how to start a new thread.
apushatayidParticipantDrivers with a permit may only operate a vehicle with dual breaks in NYC. Its all on the nyc.gov website.
apushatayidParticipantIsn’t it a question of how one uses or applies it? Its like asking is applesauce tznius?
apushatayidParticipant“That is completely fallacious.”
I prefer the term hyperbole.
apushatayidParticipant“Brushing one’s hair is making someone look presentable”
(What follows is not directed towards the person who wrote this line, am just using it)
Presentable is a very subjective term. What is presentable to me, might be unkempt to you. Some people may need half the makeup in Macys, just to reach the level of presentable, while others are presentable as soon as they roll out of bed in the morning. Making blanket statements about how much, how often, where etc.. shouldn’t be made.
May 13, 2011 12:14 am at 12:14 am in reply to: Signs in BP regarding Tznius (Skirts that fall 4" below the knee). #767703apushatayidParticipantGuys are very interested in a girls middos, not just those of the car she drives.
May 12, 2011 11:53 pm at 11:53 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052761apushatayidParticipantThey should never apologize for their editorial policies or decisions.
This is really off the topic of the photo, but everyone is prejudiced against someone or something, no matter how “open” they may claim to be.
What the editorial was trying to say, and perhaps said it a bit clunsily is that it is ironic that while decrying the papers policy regarding pictures they are trying to impose their own thought on the paper.
At the end of the day, if someone wants to, they can make an issue out of anything, in fact, I take offense at the socks deizooger is wearing today. Perhaps I will send a letter to the washington post about it.
May 12, 2011 8:41 pm at 8:41 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052746apushatayidParticipantI don’t agree with der tzeitungs policies about a number of things, but quite frankly they are within their rights to print the photo with a picture of a donkey in place of hillaries head. That’s “freedom of speech”. Someone will always find fault with those who disagree with them, at times using it as a launching pad for the rest of their hatred.
May 12, 2011 7:38 pm at 7:38 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052736apushatayidParticipantThe women who keep appearing in the Ohel Mental Health Professionals video advertisement must surely be a breach of tznius, where are YWNs standards? Der Tzeitung wouldn’t even go with a black and white photo, and YWN is in color. My goodness.
apushatayidParticipant“but exact quotes of the Ralbag and Baalei HaTosfos are on the first page of this thread.”
That proves they can copy and paste.
apushatayidParticipantThere are three sides to every story. His. Hers. The truth. Go out with him and make your own determination whether or not this person is someone you want to marry.
apushatayidParticipant“What are good questions to ask when researching a potential shidduch date?”
Dont bother. Just hire the Pinkertons and let them compile a report. It is what most people do these days anyway. I know someone who was “researching” a family and compiled more info than the CIA has on many terrorists.
apushatayidParticipant“popa paraphrased the Ralbag. And Rabbi Cohen quoted the actual words of both the Ralbag and the Baalei HaTosfos.”
Exactly, and offered their own interpretation.
“if you disagree with Popa’s pshat in the ralbag, please present us with an alternative”
Certainly, when I get around to it.
May 12, 2011 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052729apushatayidParticipantLet me get this straight, it is forbidden to publish a black and white partially obscured facial photo of Hillary Clinton in the paper, because it is not tznius. When she shows up in the neighborhood to “bring home the pork”, does she wear a burqua? Do only women attend the meetings with her? Seems to me there is a double standard at play, but hey, what do I know, i’m just apushatayid.
