Its like Gamanit said, Its how you say it. Also teens will naturally want to be different. Treat them like adults and then you may get a positive response.

Growing up I wore a black hat. I decided to wear one on Shabbos. I took pride in wearing the black hat. The hat I wore was not a main stream brand, in fact it was a cowboy hat brand. I got the hat reshaped so it looked more traditional but you could still tell that it was different. My father never wore a hat and my grandparents were not religious.

When I went to a sleep away camp, I became aware of other people’s reaction to my hat. People were always trying to ‘fix’ the hat and telling me how weird it was. They eventually bent the hat out of shape. After the camp I never wore the hat again and I still don’t wear one.

It goes both ways with the bottom line being: People will make fun of others just to raise themselves up. I know I might get some flak for saying what I’m about to say but I believe that it should be said. Jews should try to get along with other Jews and ignore the differences. Obviously Jews should also practice proper Halacha, but as Rodney King once said, “Can’t we all just get along.”

To the people saying USA doesn’t know how to deal with snow, you are mistaken. I was visiting Minneapolis in February. When I arrived it was in the 40s and there was no snow on the ground. The day I left they had a typical storm that dumped 8 inches in a little more than 2 hours. The city easily able to handle the snow. So you see from this that parts of the USA do know how to deal with snow. New York City is not America!

I think some of the above posters make great points about the proper use of cheese. When used properly, cheese, can make any person seem agreeable to a shidduch. In my experience the sharper the cheese, the better. Some may say that cheese is not the way to go. I say right back to them that if they would take a broad look at the use of cheese in the Jewish history, they would easily see that cheese has been at the forefront of happy Jewish marriages.

Just write a creative story about yourself. Tell them how you had to study how to fight evil combat chickens in the land of pandas. They will know what you are talking about and chances are that it will blow them away. (if it doesn’t blow them away then it will at least grab their attention.)

I’ll think of ideas to start something. But it is not something that can just be thought of. It was a more spontaneous decision when I had a very relaxed state. Thank Hashem that real life has been keeping me off the internet lately. I’ll see if I ever get this type of inspiration. I just tried and couldn’t think of anything, oh well better luck next time.

kneedeep — I think she was saying, you got to be able to allow some space to move. It is incredibly hard for anyone to keep up if there is a very high intensity. When something is kept very rigid when it gets bumped it is more likely to shatter than if it was a bit looser. I’m not saying she was correct, but she does have a great point. That we should focus on the big things.

Leeba — Stay strong. Maybe when you are older you will come to realize that no matter what your parents and G-d still love you and that you will always be welcomed back.

I’m looking at these responses and I can’t help but noticing that some very important information is being left out.

Back at the great Jewish hat conference (2004). The white hat leader (names will be withheld for the sake of peace) got into an argument with many of the other leaders. He took all their hats and put them into the washing machine. Now as you all know colours run in the wash. All of the red, green, blue, ect… got mixed together to create an ugly greyish colour. The other leaders decided to unify to stand against the white hats. They decided that they would all dye their hats grey. This was not to be as they looked at prices for the dye, they noticed that black dye was actually cheaper.

And that is how black hats became the fashion.

Yes there is. You are not alone. I know many people who struggle with the same problem. Some of my friends had a competition to see who could remain ‘clean’ the longest. The loser had to pay a sum.

Also believe me that in a way, you are lucky that it has only been two years and not longer. Find someone that you can talk to. Filters don’t work so well but they do give you time to think if you really want to use the internet in that way. Try to get into a habit that whenever you feel that urge, you do pushups or something else physically intense.

If all that fails keeps trying. It is extremely hard to stop cold turkey. You may not become a master overnight. But if you put in the hard work, you will see results.

I am assuming that you are from a circle that does shidduch dating, otherwise I would suggest to get a girlfriend (shomer or not it would be up to you). Then you would feel bad ‘cheating’ on her.
