☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant
The morning after Hurricane Sandy, the power was still out in my neighborhood. The shul we daven is is dark, but I had a siddur app on my iPad and used that.
If you want to condemn me for that, go ahead.
The Wolf
I don’t think it’s fair to compare clearly extenuating circumstances with what some people do on a regular basis when they can easily use a siddur.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantROB, that’s a machlokes, and not the basic halachah according to Mishnah B’rurah.
Sam, because it’s not said every day (or at night).
Wolf, for Ashkenazim, but not for Sefardim.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think it is a bad thing to shame people, and it’s a good policy to not make it obvious who is getting assistance. Their feeling bad about it is their business, not mine or yours.
I also agree with RY23. Just because someone has nice clothing and a nice phone doesn’t mean they can afford rent and groceries.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOomis, that’s true for your rav and mine, but unfortunately, not for Charlie’s.
Joseph, I’m surprised at you.

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDon’t buy the bottles of Coke with santa on them, unless you don’t mind if your kid calls him a tzaddik.
December 15, 2015 4:49 am at 4:49 am in reply to: Buying returned food equipment or utensils #1116449☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAnyhow, pigs aren’t Jewish and can eat tarfus. You’re such an amaaretz!
(not as big as me)
December 15, 2015 4:45 am at 4:45 am in reply to: Buying returned food equipment or utensils #1116446☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHow can you eat anything, why don’t you have to assume you’re a pig, and your saliva is yotzei min hatamei?
Pig saliva is nosein ta’am lifgam.
December 15, 2015 4:43 am at 4:43 am in reply to: Buying returned food equipment or utensils #1116445☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDY: you do realize that your analogy is unfair as the chances of each happening are not comparable.
From a non Halachic POV, just as general observations:…
Well, I am speaking from a halachic POV. ?????? ????? ?? ???????.
December 15, 2015 3:37 am at 3:37 am in reply to: Buying returned food equipment or utensils #1116441☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think it’s rare enough that if the packaging looks intact, you don’t need to assume it’s used.
December 15, 2015 2:48 am at 2:48 am in reply to: Buying returned food equipment or utensils #1116436☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHow can you be sure when buying an apple that someone didn’t inject it with lard?
December 14, 2015 6:22 pm at 6:22 pm in reply to: Parents visiting married children uninvited at night??? #1117047☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGlad to hear it was just a rough spot and not a bad relationship.
December 14, 2015 3:11 pm at 3:11 pm in reply to: Who needs ("professional") Shadchanim, anyways? #1144561☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI apologize.
December 14, 2015 2:20 pm at 2:20 pm in reply to: Who needs ("professional") Shadchanim, anyways? #1144555☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantJoseph, do you agree that there is some type of implication that such a shidduch is unyeshivish or somehow invalid? I don’t; I’ve never heard such a claim.
December 14, 2015 11:26 am at 11:26 am in reply to: Who needs ("professional") Shadchanim, anyways? #1144553☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think, as MDG and Oomis pointed out, there is obviously a need for professional shadchanim, otherwise they wouldn’t exist. I agree that a shidduch proposed by someone who knows both sides has a better chance of success than if the shadchan knows neither or only one party, but sometimes those suggestions just aren’t being made.
December 14, 2015 5:25 am at 5:25 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116749☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHashem doesn’t “need” anything.
Where do you hear these shocking messages?
December 14, 2015 5:04 am at 5:04 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116746☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCan I get a brachah?
December 14, 2015 5:03 am at 5:03 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116745☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOh, I know, you must be a chassidishe rebbe.
December 14, 2015 5:01 am at 5:01 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116744☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOn the other hand, if you were Hashem, you wouldn’t need a reminder.
Now I’m really confused. You’re not Hashem, and you’re not a navi, so how do you have a message straight from Hashem?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYes, I think from the rest of my post it’s obvious that I knew what you meant. 🙂
December 14, 2015 4:54 am at 4:54 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116743☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWait, you said there are no nevi’im today, but your message came straight from Hashem. Does that mean you’re claiming to be Hashem?
December 14, 2015 4:52 am at 4:52 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116742☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMashiach Agent, was that longwinded false prophecy supposed to excuse you for putting words in the Chovos Halevavos’ mouth? Or did it not remind you to not falsely quote him in order to push your own agenda?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt is.
Impossible?
So be careful about it and it won’t happen.
I can tell you stories of sincerely frum boys and girls who ended up sitting through inappropriate classes because they didn’t realize what they contained until the middle of the term. Maybe it’s avoidable, just don’t wonder why not having an aversion to secular studies per se doesn’t translate into college being considered perfectly acceptable.
BTW, is it assur to “hear” k’firah?
From a professor who is supposed to be an authority (and is sometimes even shomer Shabbos and wearing a yarmulke)? I would think so, and certainly not a good idea. Again, I’m not coming to say that going to college is definitely assur under all circumstances, just explaining why there’s a legitimate reason why college is considered a bad idea in some circles, even when secular studies aren’t an issue.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t know that it’s theoretically impossible to get a degree without taking any courses that teach kefirah, I just think that many end up hearing kefirah whether it be unknowingly or offhandedly, or not caring. And I am not excluding “frum” colleges from this.
There are also courses which contain arayos, still not excluding “frum” colleges.
December 14, 2015 3:40 am at 3:40 am in reply to: skripka's soliloquy on the shidduch "crises". or, why NOT chasidish? #1116121☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhat do you mean by “by default”?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAre you saying it’s muttar to study evolution?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCan one take only those courses?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThey do have those issues.
December 14, 2015 2:26 am at 2:26 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116738☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIf you’ve gone through it so many times, how did you so badly misremember what he said?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt’s not only dictionaries that give definitions.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCharlie, that depends on how you define race. There are most definitely halachos which distinguish between members of different nations – Amalekim, Mitzrim, Amonim, Moavim.
‘???’ ??”? ??”? ??”? ?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantRY23,
You haven’t defined or given examples of “rights”.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCharlie,
Of course it’s true. What do you think women being rabbis is all about?
December 14, 2015 12:29 am at 12:29 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116736☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMashiach Agent, care to respond?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think I hear what you’re saying, although I didn’t take Joseph’s comments the way I think you did.
As you know, halacha distinguishes between how we deal with Jews and non-Jews (e.g. lending and borrowing money with interest), and some would call that racist. Would that justify non-Jews treating us worse, say in hiring practices?
I definitely think we should treat people with respect without regard to their race.
December 14, 2015 12:08 am at 12:08 am in reply to: skripka's soliloquy on the shidduch "crises". or, why NOT chasidish? #1116119☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSome would, most wouldn’t.
December 13, 2015 9:26 pm at 9:26 pm in reply to: skripka's soliloquy on the shidduch "crises". or, why NOT chasidish? #1116116☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThere was an article in Mishpacha a few weeks back making that point. I know you said we should focus on the reasons it could work, but l’maaseh, it’s out of most people’s comfort zone.
I do agree that people should consider it, and for however many people it works, terrific. I don’t think it’s realistic as a solution to the societal issue, though.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSkripka, of course. The problem with “frum” feminists (the type Charlie knows) is that they want equal rights and obligations in the realm of Judaism whether or not it is what the Torah actually wants (being careful to have a teirutz for how it doesn’t technically violate halacha).
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe whole point of racism is that “we” are better than “them”, so why would you think that the equation can be reversed?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLC, define “we”.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe same right and obligations, or different ones?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWho gave them rights?
December 13, 2015 7:57 pm at 7:57 pm in reply to: Who has more experience, the parents or their children? #1116477☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGlad to hear it. So why do you care if the parents get involved in shidduchim?
December 13, 2015 7:41 pm at 7:41 pm in reply to: Who has more experience, the parents or their children? #1116475☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAgreed. Joseph happens to be right on all 5 points there. Sure, there are some parents who mess things up for their kids, but the way things are generally done is correct for normal, healthy parents, who genuinely want what’s best for their children. In my world, that’s the majority.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThere are other issues as well, namely the environment, but I don’t know why kefirah and arayos are things which are so insignificant that you can say there’s really nothing wrong.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe question in your original post has been answered
December 13, 2015 7:05 am at 7:05 am in reply to: The NASI Project – an updated assesement of this shidduch initiative #1116088☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m really curious if this respected person happens to know whether or not Israeli couples have more shalom bayyis issues than American families.
He was dealing with Americans.
please remember that learning wasn’t mentioned in this thread thus far
I mentioned it because it’s relevant to the age at which shidduchim typically start.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSo?
December 13, 2015 2:05 am at 2:05 am in reply to: Who needs ("professional") Shadchanim, anyways? #1144547☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAre Orthodate & Jwed amateur?
December 13, 2015 1:49 am at 1:49 am in reply to: Do you know any chassidish Rebbes that I can get brachos from? #1116730☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou probably mean:

He doesn’t give your moshol, or say anything about having faith in a brachah, which is merely a way of getting Hashem’s help. You made those parts up, no?
