I do have a question for Dr. Hall, though.
Pew reports 4.1 average number of children per orthodox family (the value of those numbers re: shidduchim is similarly qualfied as per my previous comment).
My question is: what would be the typical population growth by percentage for a four children average, or for a five children average?
November 5, 2014 12:53 pm at 12:53 pm in reply to: Statistician Dr. Charlie Hall's analysis of the marital age gap data #1040745☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantTo be meaningful, that would have to be broken into the types of schools associated with the community in the shidduch crisis discussion.
Also, “why” is very important. Is it because more boys exist, or because they are just more likely to be enrolled in a Jewish day school?
November 4, 2014 8:42 pm at 8:42 pm in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090227☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantBut why is there something wrong with not having the proper feeling.
Because Hashem created a world in which it is inherently proper, and created us with some of that feeling, and with the feeling (and instruction through Chaza”l) that the feeling should be enhanced and cultivated.

And it would indeed apply to use of a cell phone to text through voice activation, but I’m not addressing that specifically.

Sure it’s ???? ?????? ????, as the two cases he compares it to are.

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSeems to me, at least according to this quote, that his Zionism was more pragmatic than hashkafic or even halachic. What would he say today now that Torah and Jewish life has b”H flourished even for those who are not zionistic?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI find that the Meal Mart pastrami sold in one pound packages is better than other pastrami. Anyone else notice this?

If so, barely.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant1) The people who deal in these are usually shady characters who deal in all sorts of stolen goods. You have to know if there was a shinui r’shus.
2) No, but it makes them koihns.
3) Are they karkaos? Are they avodim? Are they shtaros? If the answer to any of the above is “yes”, then you should trade them in for something not in any of those categories.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt does, but you’d need a couple hundred rolls.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt works in Canada.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIvory, apparently the negative time stamp is a glitch, and it causes posts to to be out of order, because if a newer post goes up while it’s in negative territory, the system treats the newer post as older than the negative one.

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSam (can we shmooze normally between the troll posts?), l’shitasi that you hold everything is c”a, you’ve missed a bunch.
Are you serious, BTW, about ties? Someone just asked me about birthday cake candles, and I don’t know the source, but I’ve got a feeling that might be a real problem.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDoes that mean that popa and I get to stay?
On second thought, don’t answer that.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMeiheicha teisi he was talking about habitual nail biting?
SiDi, I agree that it probably wasn’t meant literally.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPAA, how is that the opposite?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZD and Syag, they are clearly mocking rabbonim. I do not believe for a minute that such blatant bizayon haTorah is going hand in hand with sincerity in minimizing chillul Shabbos.
Squeak, if I were to give directions, and add, “the reason I am giving you directions is to minimize the chillul Shabbos”, would you still call it m’sayea liydei oivrei aveirah?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSyag, I’ve heard that the Chazon Ish once saw someone biting his nails during the week and said it’s chillul Shabbos (because will do it out of habit on Shabbos).
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHe retracted in the Shabbos Switch.
Also,as I pointed out, their “avoidance” of koseiv makes no sense, and is no different l’halacha than ordinary texting.
Aside from the fact that there’s no way to make this muttar, these people (if serious) are halachically ignorant. I mean, battery is aish??!!
I have to admit, though, using the name Yitz Appel was cute.
Also, I approve of your apt pun. :
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZD, what does anything you wrote have anything to do with the Chillul Shabbos App?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWould it help to cut and file it all the way down?

October 31, 2014 3:14 pm at 3:14 pm in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090217☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhy should Hashem’s will have any intrinsic value?
It is intrinsic; it needs no “why”. If you don’t understand that Hashem’s will is intrinsically valuable, I guess I can’t help you.
October 31, 2014 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090211☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantBecause it is intrinsically proper, and it is intrinsically required to do what is proper.
Even if you don’t agree that it’s more, odu li mihas that it’s at least as intrinsically valuable to fulfill Hashem’s will as your own.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGavra, no, I don’t mean it’s literally amira l’akum, I just mean that it could be assur despite that it’s dibbur. I think you would need to provide a source to be mattir grama al y’dei dibbur.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIs this for new threads also, or for posts also? Because I was going to post why I thought popa isn’t bothered by PAA’s conundrum.
October 31, 2014 9:46 am at 9:46 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090208☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWell, having reached that Madreiga his motivation is the Mitzva itself.
So you are coming on to my point at the end. Okay, I think you can use that at the beginning as well; I think even someone who is not on the madreigah to do exclusively lishmah can still be motivated to build himself toward that level lishmah.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIs it a hoax just to have fun? Is it a scam to get people to invest or buy the dummy app? Are they trying to make fun of left wingers? Are they trying to make fun of right wingers?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSyag, it has nothing to do with the value of the particular item. It’s that the boys see you coming to Yeshiva without your uniform.
She should correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Syag was talking about the value of the items, but rather with priorities when faced with a less than ideal situation.
October 31, 2014 4:33 am at 4:33 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090203☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantChas V’shalom! I was referring to what a person will do, not what he should do.
Maybe that’s part of why it’s a nobler purpose; it’s a hechrech, whereas if it’s only for reward, then it should be optional.
October 31, 2014 3:20 am at 3:20 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090201☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIf I value reward, then I will. Likewise, if I value fulfilling Hashem’s ratzon, I will. The latter is a nobler purpose.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantInspired by the SUC, I was going to start a thread called, “Wouldn’t it be Funny If…?” and hypothesize which usernames might just be a second account.
For example, wouldnt it be funny if Shopping613 was really HaLeiVi?
October 31, 2014 2:22 am at 2:22 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090199☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhy should I care about the intrinsic value of enjoying the reward?
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSyag, I believe that hat/minyan has been discussed in the CR (it’s definitely been discussed by poskim).
Ari-free, it’s not about the inherent value of a tie, it’s about what the tie represents in this context.
October 31, 2014 1:41 am at 1:41 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090197☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHalevi – isn’t that really a dog chasing it’s tail? If you are trying to achieve that level purely because of the reward you are going to get, you will find it pretty hard to attain that level!
Who ever said it was easy?
DaasYochid – I think I know where you’re heading, but I don’t see it working.
Why not? What happened was that PAA arrived at a point where he couldn’t give a further reason, rather, “enjoying the reward IS the purpose”, in other words, it has intrinsic value. Well, the Tanna is telling us that the ideal is not to arrive at that intrinsically valuable goal, but rather, at the intrinsically valuable goal of fulfilling His ratzon.

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYes, an absolute creative genius – artist, comedian, songwriter (music and lyrics), storyteller, impersonator, and an extremely warm, charismatic, and friendly person as well.
