☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant
Shailah: Is it muttar to write entire words at a time on Shabbos?
Teshuvah, yes, as long as we can replace the issur by making up another one, namely combining preexisting letters to form a word (see Taz 340;2).
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZohar
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThis guy has talent. It’s a shame he didn’t post his reasoning on popa’s yct teshuvos thread.
Gavra, so amira l’akum is okay?
He was busted on the battery issue, but is being just as stupid about the kesiva issue, being mattir the assur and assering the muttar to make it seem as if he’s accomplishing something.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantInterested613, I didn’t know he left behind ideas for stories.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAgree with oyyoyyoy.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt’s been too long since the last chukas aku”m. You’re not doing your job.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNext time, he should come on time wearing his tie.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHonor compels me to hand in my certificate. Guesses about my other identity are welcome.
Patur Aval Assur?
October 30, 2014 5:32 pm at 5:32 pm in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090179☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLet’s put the question a little differently. If Hashem would give you the Torah and command you to fulfill it but He tells you that whether o not you fulfill it has nothing to do with anything, i.e. there is no reward/punishment and no ramifications of any sort. Would you do it?
If the question would be “should”, the answer would be an unequivocal yes.
The question is “would”, though, and I think it takes a lot of work to achieve the level at which the answer is an unequivocal yes.
The story is told about the Vilna Gaon that one year, there were no esrogim to be found. Someone managed to get one, and offered it to the Gaon on condition that the reward for the mitzva be his. The Gaon readily agreed, and rejoiced that he was able to do the mitzvah shelo al m’nas l’kabel p’ras.
They don’t tell such stories about me.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt was very good. I recommend it, but no one should expect it to be the same as the originals, because Rabbi Kunda a”h was one of a kind.
I don’t think there will be any more, because I don’t think there are any more unpublished stories from Rabbi Kunda.
October 30, 2014 4:06 pm at 4:06 pm in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090175☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think yekke2 did sum it up nicely, but Avram is correct. There’s no reason why there has to be a step past “because it’s the right thing”. That is intrinsic, and by definition, why someone should do it doesn’t need to be explained.
October 30, 2014 3:55 pm at 3:55 pm in reply to: Why Do You Think Bnos Obama Yerushalayim Was Hit by Hurricane? #1038713☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThere’s a book called “Through Music and Song”, by Rabbi Elysha Sandler, which discusses both the positive and negative aspects of music. For anyone interested in the topic, it’s worth a look.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAnd how…
Never mind.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThen I had popa administer a few sessions of CBT therapy . . . and the rest is history.
lol
October 29, 2014 6:48 pm at 6:48 pm in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090153☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGavra, I think that doesn’t detract from Avram’s point; if there’s a chiyuv mammon but no enforcement or consequence, we should still agree that it’s proper to pay.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNow you’re 37?
October 29, 2014 11:24 am at 11:24 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090139☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPAA, it is a big deal, because of the inherent value of doing His ratzon (which is to serve Him shelo al m’nas).
In fact, he will get more s’char for following shelo al m’nas, however, if a person only serves shelo al m’nas because he knows this will garner him more s’char, THAT’S your conundrum (well, paradox, really).
October 29, 2014 4:42 am at 4:42 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090135☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAs the Mishnah says, it is like a servant to his master. It is inherently proper for one of lower statute to serve One of higher stature.
And, as the Rav miBartenura says, it is from ahavah (cf. gavra), and the good feeling one has when serving from ahavah is not the pras to which ???????? ??? ???? was referring.
October 29, 2014 12:32 am at 12:32 am in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090133☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPAA, there is no inherent value in liking chocolate.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant29, I hope that’s not what you (or a different mod) meant by his subtitle.
October 28, 2014 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm in reply to: Theological Conundrum (read at your own risk) #1090129☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGavra, I don’t think lishmah, ahavah, and hakaras hatov are exclusive of each other.
Patur, why do I like chocolate?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGolfer, if they’re not married, they’re already getting gelilah.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLol, Dash.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCoincidence, I’m sure.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGamanit, I don’t think whoever gave her the earrings she wears to the wedding will be insulted if she switches to the pair her chosson gave her as a yichud gift.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGet whatever this guy got:

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t like warm Dr. Pepper.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m kovea itim for no smoking, but I’m married already.
October 28, 2014 1:55 am at 1:55 am in reply to: How much to put in kids' therapy savings fund? #1037703☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantBar is from bar mitzva
Nonsense. Bar is from bar.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMaybe the CR has become flame retardant.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI imagine that it looks that way to cynical outsiders, but in reality it’s quite different, not just because we’re right and they’re wrong.
Many Jews are not antagonistic towards Yiddishkeit, they were just not exposed to it very much. Although we would love to attract even antagonistic Jews, that’s not very realistic, so I think the goal was to attract the first group.
However,an invitation to a frum Jew to a chofshi weekend, or a Sunday Christian brunch, is an invitation to an antagonistic group or person (not that we’re antagonistic to non frum or non Jewsh people, but we are antagonistic to the ideas they’re trying to convert us to).
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDoes Anyone Know the Halacha Concerning Chuffins?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDid you consult your LOR before speaking negatively about ahavas E.Y.?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOf course.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant🙂
Of course you weren’t trying to belittle my point, and you were correct to point out that we were in agreement.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLet’s say there was never someone who went OTD other than where there was an obvious reason (which I don’t accept). That still doesn’t mean that the child isn’t to blame.
October 27, 2014 2:55 am at 2:55 am in reply to: How much to put in kids' therapy savings fund? #1037696☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI like eftachbchinor’s post. Very much.
Now the question is: how much should popa put away for his own therapy?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantShmold shmargument. http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/different-strokes-for-different-folks
My opinion, b’kitzur:
There are three things that determine how a child turns out: nature, nurture, and bechirah. The first two determine how hard or easy the choices are, but it’s ultimately his or her choice. The parents are a huge part of nurture, so often, OTD can be traced to poor parenting, but it’s still not the only factor.
And popa, there are no reshaim today? Meiheicha teisi?
I’m with Spice of Life on this.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantShowjoe, sorry. I’ll amend my earlier comment to read: I like showjoe’s answer the best, and popa’s second best.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt seems that the Torah does not protect anyone else.
No, it just seems that the protection is not total, unless you want to make an unnecessary machlokes hasugyos.
October 26, 2014 10:30 pm at 10:30 pm in reply to: NeutiquamErro's favorite thread with an obscure title #1147513☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe magical people clearly practice age gap marriage. Is there a shidduch crisis?
Well, what’s the rate of population growth?
October 26, 2014 9:58 pm at 9:58 pm in reply to: Totally Random Thread Title Just to Confuse PAA #1061353☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNu, my rosh yeshiva used to say that the “torah tavlin” is actually talking about mussar.
So I quite think he argued substantively with what you’re citing from Rav Chaim
Your Rosh Yeshiva was quoting the Chofetz Chaim (M”B 1-4-12).

October 26, 2014 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm in reply to: When will Boro Park have a Shabbos Project and host thousands of BTs? #1038384☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGolfer, not true. Nowadays, Lakewood is also considered in town.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPAA, R’ Moshe wasn’t trying to prove the concept of ???? ????? from that gemara, that’s a given (based on other gemaras), he was showing a direct comparison between talmud Torah and physical protection, and that talmud Torah is more important.
I don’t know what R’ Moshe did or did not know about the spiritual dangers involved in army service at the time, or how effective he thought it would be to bring it up, but we really can’t be medayek anything from what you consider an omission.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOther. I would prefer not to elaborate.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNot a kashya, the whole city isn’t patur because they’re not learning.
He was answering two yeshiva bochrim who were asking if they should join the army, and he gave the most basic reason not to, so they can continue learning. His answer applies even if there would be units which would be glatt kosher in ruchniyus.
It would be more instructive had they asked him if they should work or join the army, and described the spiritual danger. But that wasn’t the question they asked.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m not sure what your point is. I’m not denying the gain, just pointing out that there’s a cost.
