    David Bar-Magen and illini07:

Maybe you guys should come spend some time in Eretz Yisroel where it’s “????? ????? ??????” (“the air of the Land makes one wise”), because you need to be infused with some wisdom (if you can make such an equation…) 🙂 (don’t take that personally, we’re just having a great time discussing this)

If you go to the bakery, you’re not there to inter-mingle with the customer; you’re there to buy your bread. If you call your neighbor to find out if your kid is there, and the wife answers, you’re not calling to shmooz with her; you’re calling to find out some info.

According to you, Rabbonim shouldn’t ever receive women’s shaylos b/c they might becoming friendly with them. What will Dovid Hamelech say to that? (where the Gemora early in Brochos says he took pride in the fact that his hands were blood-dirty from answering such shaylos.)

The point here (and I’m not quite sure why it’s so hard to understand) is that friendly-like situtations CANNOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE be gender-mixed. Business-like cases: well, “you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do”.

intellegent: good point there about the tuition, and don’t forget insurance (which anonymouse1079 just mentioned)

When we moved last year, we saved nearly $30,000 in these 2 departments alone. Of course there are some other expenses that you don’t have in USA (arnona if you rent, car/gas if you plan on getting one) – but for the most part, it’s much cheaper to live in EY. And I recently heard from an Israeli whose son works on the financial sector of Switzerland (we’re talking big $$$$$$), that although his son earns 3 times as much as he does, the sone rarely “makes the month” – but his father living in EY never has this problem.

So definitely, besides for Dollars and Shekels, you need to carry some Emunah bills with you while living here – it’s worth it!

illini07, so when are you going to permit McDonalds?

Going to Facebook (and having mix-gender “friends”) is just the same “issur d’Oraissa” as eating treif, as the Torah clearly writes “??? ????? ???? ????? ????? ??????”, and “?????? ?? ??? ????? ???????” (the former you know what it means, the latter refers to the chiyuv d’Oraissa to refrain from gender taaruves)

Disgrace-Book is a disgrace to anyone who has even a drop of yiras shomayim. Open any person’s page, and right away you see the pictures of all the zoynos/shiktzos on his “friend” list.

To those friends I say: “??? ??? ???? ?????” (referring to Yorovom Ben Nevot, who corrupted Klal Yisroel – Berochos 35)

halavai: I don’t believe any of the <i>nochri</> fruits and veges during Shmitta were from Europe and the USA, but rather from Jordan.

But absolutely, since our move a year ago we also wouldn’t trade it for anything, despite some of the hardships.

We try to tell our story to others back in Chul, hopefully they’ll follow these footsteps and come back home too.

mariner, (this is getting fun 🙂 – have you tried Office 2007, or Vista for that matter? Did they add ANYTHING there as far as features, or just LOOKS (ribbons, transparency, etc.)

It’s true that originally Mac had this image that it was superior for graphics apps, and that PC controlled the business world, but all that’s history now.

Correct, Adobe & Office will run better of PC, since they’re made for that. But other multi-platform apps are a different subject altogether.

Think about it, how long did it take MS to come up with their on-steroids ASP.net (to rival PHP)? Have you ever tried (babyish) ASP classic? It’s just running a bunch of VBScripts with some object (and/or database) calls. Nothing to brag about! And IE7 – how long did it take MS to copy Opera’s tabs and page zooming?

The bottom line is that MS w/ Bill Gates at the helm are just a bunch of copy-catters (sorry for my childhood terms, I get it from my kids), and can’t invent anything new on their own (but give them much credit for being excellent in marketing as far as looks goes).

Case in point: MySQL and Oracle vs. SQL Server (time them, see who’s faster); Opera & Firefox vs. IE (time their JavaScript parsing); Lotus and WordPerfect vs. Office (see who crashes more often); MacOS vs. Windows (same as above) – the list goes on and on. Who came first? the non-Microsoft, only to be followed by MS’s copying.

i completely disagree with you mariner: Mac is essentially Linux under the hood, and farkert, the reason why Macs were invented (and still are being used) is for the non-techies who want some computing power. So again, the software written for Mac/Linux is much more stable (and therefore won’t cause a crash), since it’s made by developers who concentrate much more on the “toychen” (contents) of the app, rather than Microsoft’s goal of esthetics (more chitzoyniyus than pnimiyus)

Yes, Macs are more costly, and by now XP’s proven itself to be pretty stable (we can’t say that for Vista though) – so therefore there isn’t the urgent mad rush to get a Mac.

I personally use a PC (need it to interact with the software development world and Sforim production biz that I’m in) – but my wife uses a Mac for other professional applications, and she can’t rave enough about how much better it is than her former PC.

in reply to: MAC vs PC #636650

the basic difference is as follows:

MAC: much more stable (i.e., programs and PC won’t suddenly crash on you, making you lose data)

PC: about 97% of the world’s software is written for PC, so if you want to use a specialized software (besides for the regular internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.), you may not be able to find a Mac version of it.

Simple solution to chunchie & SJSinNYC: Move to Eretz Yisroel, where the weekend is Friday/Shabbos. Also, when you start working at a company, you get more vacation days (EXCLUDING the Yom Tovim) than any USA job could think of, even after a few years of working there!)

Yes, it’s true, salaries aren’t the same as in America. But when you think of how much insurance and tuition that you DON’T have to pay (I saved about $30,000 once I moved – yes, $30,000), it makes the big picture MUCH different.

One more thing: If you’re in the IT field, there are TONS of jobs available here, much more that in the USA.

Pashuteh Yid, that’s “Kova Tembel”, which you may not need anymore on Sukkos, since the clock goes back an hour already, and summer finally starts to say good-bye.

Also Joe Schmo, be EXTREMELY careful on how/where you select your Esrog. As we’re nearing the end of Shmitta, the esrogim will still be Peiros Shviis (Shmitta produce) and you have to be very careful of how you handle them – they contain an immense amount of Kedusha. The same holds true for Kashrus. Make sure that when you dine out (or by food at a grocery) you get a very good Mehadrin hechsher, which won’t use ridiculously fabricated kulos (leniencies).

Enjoy every moment, and maybe we’ll bump into each other!

charvona and the rest: nobody mentioned here that part of the reason is due to the Churban (and I also heard that it’s due to the Girush Sfard (Spanish Inquisition) and the Pogroms of Tach v’Tat (approx. year 1648)) – so definitely Yosef Hatzaddik lived before the Churban.

Actually, what needs to be done is to have an Eretz Yisroel representative of the YWN Editor, since we here in EY don’t see all the updates till late afternoon at the earliest, and we have to go a whole morning wondering how the conversation will turn out.

I believe – and correct me please if I’m wrong – that Yechiel Spira has the adminstrative permission to update the site with his stories. I doubt that the YWN Editor is up when it’s 11:00AM here (4:00AM NY time), and yet the stories appear a minute or two after they occur – such as on the black day of the “murderer-for 2 bodies” exchange a few months back, when Spira immediately posted his report.

Maybe YWN should appoint someone such as Yechiel for the Coffeeroom as well.

    Remember the 5 main categories: ????, ????, ??, ???, ?????

Each level on the hierarchy was created to serve its superior. So how could human beings denounce shechita and the like? Sounds just like the Nazi YM”S practice of calling the Yidden “Hund” (dog), and their dogs “Mensch”.

    Opera! Opera! Opera!

The only browser that allows you directly from the toolbar to click a button and no pictures are displayed (unlike Foxpro and IE where you have to go through a whole bunch of settings until you find it.)

So if you’re worried about tzniyus/pritzus (and who shouldn’t be when online,) then choose Opera.

intellegent and Itzik_s: Besides for being open source is Itzik said, PHP is very popular here in EY (much more than in the Microsoft-ruled USA). (I believe PHP was invented here too) The work ethic here in EY is much more similar to Europe, where PHP is used professionally very heavily. Try finding a USA job with PHP – good luck. But here it’s on par with .NET – and can land you a very good salary. (Actualy, I was told that experienced Java developers earn even more then their .NET counterparts.)

Since you don’t seem to be tech oriented, you might want to call USA hospitals (especially those in smaller cities,) and ask them if they need anyone to work on the midnight shift for data monitoring. (That’s 7:00 AM here – in America no one wants those hours, but in EY, it’s ideal.) – Hatzlacha
