I share your surprise, but if anyone did complain about using a line from The Beatles they’d probably be laughed out of town. P.S. Neither Paul nor Art were “goyim”.

Nothing is on sale- looking for a sale in the freezer section amounts to finding the second best bochur in Lakewood. It doesn’t exist.

“I really find it ridiculous that people think if a guy is offering a ride to girl that it somehow will always end up with dating or marriage. Why does that have to be the case? Why can’t a guy give a girl a ride home just for the sake of being a nice person? Do you think every girl I talk to or deal with every day will result in a love affair? Of course not! I don’t think about marriage every time I talk to a woman.”

Mod- you are correct about Chazal instituting Gedarim. You are however quiet incorrect to extrapolate. You are not Chazal. I am not aware of any specific geder that prevents a young man from giving a young lady a ride home as long as yichud is avoided.

This kind of extrapolation breeds extremism, and is not Torahdig.

The financial penalty is not “one year of support”. The attacker is obligated to pay the difference in value between a kesubah of a besulah and a kesuba of a beula. This is appropriate because he caused her “marriageable value” to decrease by that amount.

The actual punishment is that if her father so chooses, the attacker must marry her and forfeits his right to divorce her. If the father does not exercise this option, seemingly there is nothing further. Obviously, there is dinei shomayim.

I heard a story about a stutterer in shidduchim:

A Rosh Yeshiva recommended a certain bochur in his yeshiva to a local man inquiring on behalf of his daughter. The RY listed the bochur’s qualities as a masmid and a baal kishron (etc) and the date was set up. The bochur happened to have a stuttering problem. When he arrived at the girl’s house and knocked at the door, the father of the girl opened the door. The nervous bochur tried to introduce himself, but what came out was “M… m… m…” and it was a full 5 minutes before he managed to say “M… m.. my name is Levi”.

The next day, the father told the RY what had happened and said that he will not go forward with the shidduch. The RY asked him why not, his stutter is not so bad most of the time and he is a fine bochur. The father said, “I am not saying no to him because of his stutter, but because he is a fool.” “Why is he a fool? On the contrary he is known to be quite smart”. The father replied, “No he is a fool. He should have started to talk 5 minutes before he knocked!”

I refrained from mentioning the site so as not to lead others to it. But now that it’s out there, I ask- why is it (do you think) that this poster is allowed to have a link to his blog when no one else is allowed to link to even an innocuous site?

Option B: (If you live in a place where the “besserer mentchen” don’t seek out gov’t programs)

    1. Get married to someone willing to work a full-time job also.

The rest of the country is living on dual incomes, that’s why it’s harder to compete on a single income. Even if your salary is above average, it is most likely less than twice the average.

During WWII, children played the game differently. It went “step on a crack and you break Hitler’s back”. So the object was to step on cracks with every step. Sadly, after the war many of the children got confused when the rules of the game went back to the original, sending a lot of mothers into traction.

It most certainly is used socially. And I believe that if someone uses Coke on a date it is a 100% valid reason to end the shidduch. But I’m radical.

The market for Jewish novels is quite small, so it is difficult for publishers to turn a profit. Sometimes, the best way to get a sales boost is to have a third-party denounce the book as “too risque”.

I don’t know that I’d categorize weight loss surgery as “cosmetic.”

Wolf- Sorry I was unclear. The tshuva discusses cosmetic weight loss surgery, not health related weight loss surgery. I last saw the tshuva about 6 years ago so I could be mistaken, but I believe that R’ Moshe dismisses the shaila of health related weight loss surgery upfront by saying that whenever the health benefit of the surgery is expected to exceed the risk it is absolutely allowed.

Cosmetic surgeries are more problematic, because the guf (body) is on loan to us and not owned by us. Perhaps over Shabbos I will find time to look it up and provide an exact phrasing.

binahyeseira- You define yourself as an introvert per MBTI and you talk through your thoughts? Sounds to me like you need to be retested, or you didn’t test well.

Your generalization about men and women may or may not be true, but the MB Test results are that you are I or E, not “Man” or “Woman” 🙂 (Personally, I disagree with the generalization).

“statistics of myers-brigg show that 75% of population are extroverts”

The Myers-Briggs definitions of introvert and extrovert is different from the colloquial usages of the words. In MBTI, an introvert is one who thinks “internally” and an extrovert is one who thinks “externally”. For example, an MBTI extrovert is likely to be someone who talks through their thoughts. An MBTI introvert is one who is likely not to say anything until he has thought through the subject and solidified his ideas. if you put the two of them in the room together, the likely outcome is that the introvert will think to himself, “why can’t that guy be quiet so I can think”, and the extrovert will think to himself, “that guy just doesn’t have any useful ideas”.

In the colloquial sense, we mean socially introvert and extrovert, i.e. shy vs. outgoing. So MBTI isn’t really useful in this discussion.

DY – Bush didn’t want him killed, because he wanted to continue the wars.

But your second point is right on target – I am absolutely nothing more than an icon created to provide CR entertainment.

in reply to: Poll: Is Osama bin Laden Really Dead? #764681

Osama is an icon invented for the war on terror (whether or not a real person of that name and persuasion existed). He can be compared to Emmanuel Goldstein of 1984 or to the WMDs of Iraq. That is to say, he was a focus for the anger and hatred of the American people and he served as a justification of sorts for the continued military operations in the Afghanistan/Pakistan regions, despite the extreme unpopularity of those contests. He existed only in the collective consciousness of the people.

His “killing” did not happen through a gun or bullets but through a decision to end the charade that the existence of one man can make any difference to the welfare of an entire nation. It is a symbolic step towards ending the hostilities that the American people are so tired of – before we can pull back we need to eradicate the symbol of the wars. Obviously there is no body to show, no photos to post- though they could easily have created pictures if they felt a need to, and they could have dressed up any corpse to look like this icon if they had wanted to show a body. This wasn’t necessary, because people are tired of hearing about Bin Laden as it is (obviously, I am referring to the general population of USA and not to the specific demographic found in the CR).

Bin Laden will make no further appearances. Therefore he is dead.

My friends father had some birds nest in his tree. So somebody said, “hey, you can do shiluach hakan!”

I think this is a mistake. “Asher korcha baderech” – the nest can’t be on private property.

I got my house this way. I was at a friend’s house and he told me he was going to do shiluach hakan on the birds in his backyard tree. I told him it can’t be private property, so he was immediately mafkir the tract. While he was up in the tree, I got two eidim and gained a piece of land.
