I hold of these restrictions because that was the mesorah passed down to me . But I do recognize that a lot of it is spotty when it comes to the Gemara and later.

    I didn’t say it’s JUST a minhag. I said it’s mitaam minhag.

I’m not saying to listen to music during sefira. I don’t listen to music at that period. But it’s mitaam minhag, not mitaam halacha. My point is that people need to be educated.

I think we forget to realize that we live in times of unprecedented freedom and tranquility for Jews. Back in the day when a king told you to come to the coronation, you came. Not going could have serious repercussions. So it’s hard for us to relate to that now and it seems odd that a rabbi would go to a church on Shabbat. I think people who judge him have are one dimensional and are not really sophisticated enough to understand the nuances of going. Is anyone really surprised that UJM had that response??

If Sephardim or Chasidim hold of the eruv and that is based on a valid man deamar, then they are not Mechallel Shabbos, EVEN in light of Rav Moshe’s psak. Unless you believe in Gadolatry.

There’s an ad for a Torah initiative which includes several Rabbonim. One of the people featured is a major Marbitz Torah, who I don’t think is an actual rov, and they use the honorific Harav HaGaon. Granted this man has major zchusim and is increasing Torah learning, but really? Gaon?

חדש מן התורה ONLY means one thing, which is kemach yoshon. Don’t ever take it out of context. Just because the C’S came up with a clever interpretation does not make it halacha. If it were then we’d not allow IVF, for example. The point of Halacha IS to deal with the new. Otherwise why do I need rabbis? Just to regurgitate what I could’ve been looked up myself? And if you think there’s no Chodosh, you’re dreaming. Yiddishkeit is constantly expanding. Yes, same framework, but expanding.

All yidden, ESPECIALLY observant ones, should know Hebrew. It’s totally crazy and moronic that I have to say that. It’s like saying “every med student needs to learn how to osculate”, or “every truck driver needs to know how to break up his big rig”. It’s LITERALLY their job. Plus how do you go through modern shutim? Anyone who makes this a political thing has an interruption in their Mesorah.

The Mishna in Avos said this 1500 years earlier. What’s the Chiddush. We, as a generation, are incompetent in Mikra and the basics. It would be like taking a 6 year old child and teaching him algebra and saying “arithmetic is a waste of time”.

“A warm fuzzy feeling doesn’t mean you’re getting closer to Hashem.
And shteiging for 8 hours also doesn’t necessarily bring you to dveikus with Hashem. If you learn not lishma, or you learn but you’re full of gaiva, then it’s mutav to go to a fahrbrengen. Jews have different ways to be inspired and to connect.

Let’s not all act like we’re Harav Schach here. No one is even close.

Doesn’t negate the question I posted on this thread. It’s a valid point. You guys can keep trying to explain why YO doesn’t have the right to bring up this point. But the issue still exists. You’re basically saying that you’d rather prove why YO is wrong than to examine why the CR has faults.

“The most important issue of 2022 is why a guy Ashkenazi from Lakewood pretends to be a Sephardi.”

As you see, more put downs. Not that being Sephardi is a bad thing. But CS’s intention was to insult.

I am not claiming to be clean from any of the issues I mentioned. But it got me thinking about just how much time and effort people put into things that are trivial. And as soon as someone disagrees with a point of view, the go-to reaction is to insult them. Rather than saying I disagree with you because of a, b, c, instead the go-to is “you’re Reform, you’re open orthodox, you’re liberal….”

Also it perplexes me how some people, who I believe are genuinely very learned, spend sooooo much time here.
