There is no “flirting” going on that I am aware of.

I would estimate that in general 95% of posts are approved as is, a few are deleted, and a few are edited. Some posters are never deleted or edited. Some posters have a much higher rate of deleted and edited posts.

If I appreciated the finer points of musical theory, perhaps I might enjoy the very skilled Chazzan, yes.

In concert, in the concert hall.

in reply to: Cantorial Music #667837

Ive never heard the second kind. I’ve heard beautifully melodic Davening. People don’t generally call that “chazzanus” chazzanus to me generally implies a certain imitation operatic like tone with a huge increase in the number of syllables, drawn out words, and general extreme slowness.

Perhaps we are all talking about different understandings of what “chazzanus” is.

But what I call chazzanus…belongs in concert halls, auditoriums, and synagogues, not in a Shul, not in a Beis Ha Knesses.

in reply to: Cantorial Music #667835

Since you asked me in particular:

I am not interested in being entertained during the time of Tefillah. If I hear the Sliach Tzibbur begin chassanes I walk out. My impression usually, is that the “chazzan” is a big baal gaiva who wishes to impress everyone one with his great skill, and hasn’t the least thoughts of HaKodeshBorchu while he is performing, and hasn’t the least care about tircha d’tzibur.

I could be wrong, but that has always been my impression, and although I generally try to work on my Yetzer when I am in a situation of anger, in this case I’d rather skip the nosoyan.

in reply to: Cantorial Music #667832

Besides the fact that in this particular instance the posts have been EXACTLY to the point of the original post!

Here’s a quote: “I would like to know why no one is interested in chazzunes?”

in reply to: Cantorial Music #667831

can we keep this thread on the topic it was started as

Unfortunately not. Threads here are open to whatever the posters wish to make of them, up to a point. If the posters wish to limit a thread to only answer the specific request of the OP, that’s fine also.

    yes

    Makkos (Malkos)

Makkos were given between Mincha and Maariv

Psukim were read as the Makkos were given

V’Hu Rachum was the last Passuk said

Some Rishonim say we should have in mind, when saying this, that the Yissurim we had that day should be like Makkos for us and atone for our Aveirahs

    in reply to: Beryah #667446

I am unclear about the various parameters of what constitutes a beryah.

What if you eat the little tomato in two bites?

What about a peach if you don’t eat the pit?

    Is an egg a beryah?

I’d like to hear some discussion about it.

    in reply to: Beryah #667444

I’m not interested in avoiding the shaila. That I certainly could do. I’m interested in hearing a discussion about the shaila.

    To solve this semantic disagreement:

The statement “technically” does NOT include Camp Agudah

But it strongly IMPLIES the inclusion of Camp Agudah, and even suggests it is the prototype of such camps.

Rav Ovadiah Yoseif (Yechaveh Da’at 2:5) states that one may never repeat words. As proof, he adduces the view of the Maharam Schick that one should never repeat words, throwing in the concept of hefsek in addition to that of possible heresy with certain repetitions, as in “modim modim”. Rav Yoseif cites Rav Feinstein among his proofs.

Rabbi J. David Bleich (Contemporary Halachic Problems, volume 2) brings down a letter published by Rav Yoseif Dov Soloveitchik in 1965 in the Cantorial Council of America Bulletin, in which he opposes the repeating of words at any point in the prayer services. Rabbi Bleich surmises that this view is based on the statement in Ta’anit 27b and Megillah 22a that we may not divide any verse that Moshe himself did not already divide (“kol pasuk d’lo pasak Moshe anan nami lo paskinan. Since the repetition of a word constitutes the creation of a new verse, it would fall under this restriction and thus be forbidden.

As a final note, there are places in the prayers where words are repeated, most famously at the end of Psalm 150 in the daily services and at the end of Psalm 118 in the recitation of Hallel. Each of these cases is dealt with by the gemara and poskim and has a special exemption from whichever issues would otherwise render such a practice forbidden (especially since both occur between two blessings, and thus hefsek might be a legitimate issue).

in reply to: The Role Of A Frum Man Controversial? #671185

I knew you meant that, of course. I just wanted to put in the text what I knew you had in your mind.

in reply to: The Role Of A Frum Man Controversial? #671183

You said that quite well mazca. I would however clarify one point:

“…has to think of his family first…”

I would personally say: “…has to think of Hashem first and his family next…”

in reply to: The Role Of A Frum Man Controversial? #671179

    ester

You are so right, a person’s Yiras Shomayim, if it is EMES, will guide everything he does, from picking up his socks, throwing out the garbage, talking to someone, doing his job, to Learning Torah.

of course when you said “man”, you meant it in the generic sense as in “person”

    a Yehudi, a Prince

    or

    a Yehudis, a Princess

in reply to: Owning a Gun ? #717507

but we are getting off topic my main question is if anyone here owned a gun and if so if originally their spouse was opposed to it

It’s fine if you want to try to keep this exactly on topic as you perceive it. But since this is a forum you need to accept that the posters will write what they feel a need to express.

Me as a divorce frum person thought I was immune, my life was perrfect, my husband involved in Torah, my children in yeshivas with the Tora guiding us why should I ever get divorced, well sadly it happened and it hurts I didnt look for it, I am not an stadistic I am a human being with feelings, dreams and life ahead. never thought it was going to happen but it did and I blame my pure idealisim instead of looking at the person , his middos etc. I thought that his idealisim for Tora and mitzvot was the answer to a perfect marriage… Wrong, and the fact that people do not get divorce as much as in other circles it is just the fact that people are afraid of people. It is not fun to be divorced and be pointed at. I do not wish it to anybody but now I think to myself . Why did I wait so long?

    Very glad to hear it!

There are female mods but that would not solve the problem of the thousands of males who frequent these forums (only a very few actually post)

in reply to: Tznius Support Group PLEASE WOMEN ONLY, even reading #665255

    That would help

Still I would like to hear what others think.

in reply to: Tznius Support Group PLEASE WOMEN ONLY, even reading #665253

As a male, and one who is forced to read the posts here in order to keep things proper, I am beginning to feel quite uncomfortable about a discussion that should be open to women readers only.

I am going to close this thread, unless there are serious objections to this by a number of female posters. If it does stay open, I will no longer moderate it but will leave it to the other moderators.

I really do think it should be closed though, useful as it is. The other males here should not be reading this.

in reply to: Tznius Support Group PLEASE WOMEN ONLY, even reading #665252

Nothing intrinsically improper, but what is proper for a group of women, is not necessarily proper when a group of men are onlookers.

I don’t even want to write this, but do you really want men reading about how clingy skirts are clinging more in this area than that? I really don’t think so.

in reply to: The Riddle Thread…. #1068808

We can arrive at this by considering some of the simpler cases. Let’s assume that the king placed only 1 white hat on my head and 99 black hats on everyone else’s head. So at the time when the warden said start, I would look around and see 99 black hats. Since there has to be at least one 1 hat, I would immediately announce that I had a white hat. Everyone else would then know that they had black hats and would say so.

Now consider the case where I have a white hat and someone else also has a white hat. I would look and see 1 white hat. If I had a black hat, that person would immediately announce that they had a white hat. But that doesn’t happen. Instead they wait. Now since neither of us was able to announce right away, we know that there must be 2 white hats. So we both announce that we have white hats.

You can follow this pattern with 3 white hats, etc. but it requires that you have a plan in place for timing. Let’s say that everyone will wait ten seconds for every hat they see less of. So if I see no white hats, I will immediately announce “WHITE” after 0 seconds. Everyone else will follow with “BLACK” right after. Similarly, if I saw 1 white hat, I would plan to say WHITE after 10 seconds. If no one announced after 0 seconds, I would be correct. Then everyone else would say “BLACK” after that.

It doesn’t matter the number of hats or whether there are more or less of one color as long as we wait a discrete period of time to announce. I chose periods of 10 seconds so that there wouldn’t be a chance of mistakes.

If there are W white hats and B black hats, then:

Everyone wearing a white hat will see W-1 white hats and B black hats.

Everyone wearing a black hat will see B-1 black hats and W white hats.

    There are 3 cases:

If W < B then all white hats will say ‘White’ at the same time (10(W-1) seconds), and everyone else knows they are wearing black.

If B < W then all black hats will say ‘Black’ at the same time (10(B-1) seconds), and everyone else knows they are wearing white.

If W = B then all prisoners will know their color at the same time. (10(B-1) seconds, or 10(W-1) seconds, they are equivalent).

Let’s take an example. If there were 51 white hats and 49 black hats, and I was wearing a white hat. Then I would plan to say “black” after 490 seconds. However, the people in black hats would beat me to the punch saying “black” after 480 seconds. Then I would say “white” along with all the rest of the prisoners wearing white hats.

The Marine Corps one was denigrating to the Marine Corps

The Armadillo one, I don’t know why it was deleted, I don’t get it though.
