in reply to: Recipes for People Who Don’t Know How to Cook #672181

1 cup long grain white rice (Basmati, Jasmine, Texmati, etc.)

1 1/2 cups water or flavoring liquid

Add 1/2 cup water to the pressure cooker and position the cooking rack in the bottom. Put the rice and the 1 1/2 cups water or other or flavoring liquids in a stainless steel bowl that fits inside the pressure cooker. Use Foil Helper Handles to help position, and remove, the bowl from the cooker. Lock the lid in place and bring to 15psi, reduce the heat to the lowest setting that will just maintain that pressure. Cook 4 minutes. Remove from heat and let the pressure drop naturally. Open the lid and remove the bowl from the cooker, and fluff rice with a fork before serving.

    in reply to: Crawling #671745

    from some famous doctor’s website:

I’m reluctant to mention time frames, but somewhere between six and ten months I expect babies to discover some way to move horizontally across the floor to get desired objects. If babies actually crawl, it usually begins at around 8 to 10 months.

in reply to: Shidduchim – Meshugas or Acceptable #673729

And what if she is a Baal Chesed but occasionally gets angry? What if her mother is wonderful, but not her father?

Obviously like in everything else one must take all known factors into consideration and use SEICHEL, that’s why we were given it.

No one said to look only at the brothers!

This thread is full of arguments against no one.

in reply to: Shidduchim – Meshugas or Acceptable #673727

    I must have missed something.

Did any poster here say that you should ONLY look at a girl’s brothers and ignore her middos and values, the rest of her family and all other information?

in reply to: Shidduchim – Meshugas or Acceptable #673725

I’m not blaming or judging anyone. I’m explaining part of the logic of what Chazal say as explained by Meforshim. No piece of information guarantees anything. It is all in the hands of Hashem and we must do our hishtadlus.

Looking at the middos of the brothers is an important piece of information.

in reply to: Shidduchim – Meshugas or Acceptable #673722

    oomis

Yes of course everything must be considered. Still Chazal say what they say. And there is a logic to it as a particularly important consideration. Yes the woman will raise the children m more than the father. That is EXACTLY the importance of the brothers. The Kallah will likely raise her sons in a similar manner to how her mother raised her brothers.

It’s not a matter of discomfort. Exposure to sound that loud inevitably damages hearing and is cumulative. G-d willing you will live to be a Bubbie or Zadie and will be able to hear the sweet words of your Ayneclach….

My “cholent” is either black-bean chili with habaneros or – special occasions – a duck and beef bacon (from the forequarter of the cow) cassoulet with white beans.

I prefer Bacalaitos fritons with a dip of Bagna Cauda on the side. Of course we must be sure it is served Saignant. Usually I like it with plenty of Ras el Hanout.

You are NOT allowed to have more than one user name. However the moderators are pretty lenient about this generally as long as you simply switch from one to another and don’t go back and forth, especially during the same period of time.

Some of the ex-posters probably got bored, some left because they felt they were developing an addiction, some who consistently were getting their posts edited or deleted (for reasons I won’t go into) got frustrated and gave up.

in reply to: Falling Asleep To Music? #670181

    Found this also:

The Gemora in Gittin says you cannot go to sleep or wake up to music, and the Halachah is so. However, what we do nowadays by using a CD player for an alarm clock or a way to put us to sleep by distracting our minds off tomorrow’s global final, is not the type of going to sleep or waking up to music that the Gemora is talking about. So if your music has any therapeutic (for lack of a better term) or utility (such as an alarm clock) value to you, you can do it.

hopefully someone with some actual knowledge will post here.

in reply to: Falling Asleep To Music? #670179

I think the churban is in regard to music in general.

Falling asleep to music is a separate problem I believe, maybe related to the Churban though as you say

I don’t know the mikor but there is definitely such an inyan, it’s in a Gemorrah. Whether we poskin like this I don’t know. I know someone who asked a shaila and it was permitted for him because he had certain issues.

If you’re going to do this, probably a shaila should be asked.

I had a wart on the side of my left thumb for years. It didn’t bother me.

Then I developed one on my left wrist which would get irritated from my watch. I had it removed by electrocautery. Within a few days the one on my thumb (not treated) disappeared.

    Warts are not well understood..

in reply to: Good Shabbos! #1135616

    icot

Not in this case, i believe.

Well, an unmarried guy can light the Shabbos licht first because he is nohaig to not accept Shabbos until shkiyah.

But a woman should light the menorah first because she is nohaig to accept Shabbos with licht. She can of course make a tanayh to not accept Shabbos with licht but this isn’t recommended by M’B.

For a couple it wouldn’t be l’chatchila for the woman to bring in Shabbos with licht and then the husband to light Chanukkah (since he is being motze her), though it certainly can be done like that if necessary.

At least that’s how I learned it.

    What do you say?

in reply to: Good Shabbos! #1135612

    The Menorah should come first…:-)

Anyone who doesnt like cantorial music, don’t post here.

If you want to complain about those who don’t like cantors, don’t post here.

in reply to: Facebook and Twitter #690672

Beginning Wednesday, the networking Web site is taking the rare step of requiring its more than 350 million users to review and update their privacy settings.

The new controls are designed to simplify the cumbersome privacy controls that have confounded many users. Facebook hopes the changes make people comfortable sharing even more information.

Jules Polonetsky, co-chairman and director at the Future of Privacy Forum think tank in Washington, praised how the process resembles the way people decide what to share in their day-to-day lives. He said putting the controls “when you need it, right there, is far better than putting it in a privacy' orhelp’ location” somewhere on the site.

Facebook said that until now only 15 percent to 20 percent of its users have customized their privacy settings.

Now Facebook will be asking users to review and alter their settings through a tool that explains the changes. People will be able to keep their old settings or take recommendations from Facebook that are largely based on how they have configured their information.

If users were previously part of such a geographic network, this location will now be listed in their profiles under “current city.”

Other networks, for schools and workplaces, are staying.

The changes have no effect on advertising on the site, said Elliot Schrage, vice president of global communications and public policy at Facebook.

But he added that by giving users such granular control over the content they share, Facebook is encouraging more sharing and a greater connection to the site.

“If users feel more confident with our service, they will use our service more,” he said. “And the more they use our services the more benefits we derive.”

Please just present your information, theories, opinions, etc about the issues you wish to address, and leave your opinions about other posters on the cutting room floor.

The number 40 indicates a complete change:

40 years in the Midbar: a change from a people not fit to enter Israel, to a fit people

40 seah in the Mikvah: a change from a goy to a Jew, or from an assur woman to a mutar woman

40 lashes: from a sinner to a righteous

    40 days of the mabul

    40 days on Har Sinai

40 days from seed to embryo

    there are more

in reply to: Another Indication Moshiach is Close #668533

I didn’t really think this required explanation, but in response to the persistent poster who keeps me busy deleting his sarcastic comments.

It has been predicted that before Moshiach, in addition to many other changes preceeding his arrival, there will be rampant immorality (of all kinds) and rampant chutzpah. This particular episode contains both. If you need clarification as to how exactly that is, try thinking about it.

Imagine this happening 50 years ago. Well something this blatant would not have happened then. And if it did, and it became public knowledge, there would have been a mass outcry and everyone involved would have immediately lost their jobs and been disgraced for life. Today we just laugh it off. It fits right in with our general laxity in issues of integrity and morality.

You won’t see this unless you are perceptive, unless you live constantly with a Torah vision. Unless you think about the significance of what is happening as society changes and history leads to the ultimate Geulah.

Actually it is not so easy to know which poster is which gender. I have seen many wrong assumptions of gender here, sometimes deliberate.
