I would be more interested in the Popes relationship with the jews of Buenos Aires than of Rome.

He is the first pope to come from a city with a very large jewish poopulation (Even larger Than Krakow before the war)

Verapoi- I asked over 10 people and not one associated herring with a specific non Jewish nation. But each one named Pizza as Italian.

Get the difference? try it yourself!

Most food in the US and especially NY comes from the millions of immigrants that came to the US. There were large Italian (Really Naples and Scicily) , Irish, Asian and Jewish immigrants to NY and they brought their foods and cooking with them.

Many of these immigrants opened restaurants and other food places with their foods. So we are familiar with Italian, Asian and Jewish (Not Hemish stuff like Bagels and Pastrami). Those foods becames the staples of the NY diet

However there are many places that did not have large immigrants to the US and NY like the Dutch (Although NYC was founded by the Dutch very little remains except some place names like Staten Island) and certainly the cooking did not.

So its very obvious that most people know Italian, Asian and jewish cooking but might not know cooking from other places Like the Netherlands

Do you know why Herring is eating with Schnapps?

So the Schanpps drowns down the taste and washes it down

I’ve always assumed they either held Hungarian (or other outside country) passports or did not travel outside the country

When the Rebbe travels to Lod Airport and shows his US passport, They stamp it with something

There is also less public transport in the 5 towns.

You would need to be in Queens or Brooklyn for proper public transport.

Those people who recommend NJ also didnt realize you dont drive, you need a car in Jersey

Queens College (Or Queensboro CC) is the same price as Brooklyn/ Kingsboro they are all part of CUNY (City University of NY)

The 5 Towns is NOT cheap, thats where all the rich people live and besides you want to go Charedi, they are more modern there. There arent many apartments there and the ones you could afford are probabably illegal.

One more thing The tuition rates for Brooklyn (And Kingsboro) are significanlly higher for out of state residents (more than double) and you have to be a resident for at least a year to get the NY resident rates

Brooklyn College is not easy to get into anymore. Because its cheap alot of people want to go there

You would more likely have to attend Kingsborough Community College first which is a bit harder to get to without a car (You have to take a Bus after the Subway)

I dont know about Chicago, but in NY Community Colleges are public universities are cheap.

Id be willing to be that community colleges are cheap in Chicago too

Have you considered this idea. Also many community colleges realize many of the students there arent wealthy and will help you get a part time job to help pay for it

You own pre-concieved notions of yiddishkeit

Some of the posters mentioned people who will drive to shul on Shabbos, Eat without a Bracha, Wont wear Tfellin, Tzzizith, Might keep partial Kosher etc

You cannot give fire and brimstone to such people , you might act with love not hate. Give them a reason not to drive on Shabbos instead of telling them they are going to Gehenom if they continue to do it.

Which Mitzot to pick and choose for them to follow. Bringing up Tzinut or Mikvah for example might backfire

Asv far as the medinah, I said a long time ago that history will determine the winner. The Sadducees, the Karaim and others disappeared and it was rabbinic Judaism that survived. Same today. Orthodox Judaims has survived many centuries and continues to rebound. None of us will be here in a hundred years time- those living then will determine who is the winner.

The Kareties are still around, I think there 40,000 of them around

England did have a Parliment and France had an Estates General before the 1600’s but it really wasnt until Cromwell overthrew the king and made Parliment ruler did it really stick, Before that the Monarch was more powerful and could disolve parliment

The Florentine states in Italy did have enlightend rules like the Medicis, but in the the The Medicis had the real power.

And a Republic is not exactly a Democracy

In the ancient world he idea of a Democracy was generally foreign an unknown to many. While Rome (Before Julius Ceaser) and Athens were republics for the most part the of an elected government was unknown until at least the 1600’s in England.

Nobody knew of anything other than a monarchy

I am not in favor of government grants to fund research for research sake. If you want to apply for private grants for research for research sake, that is fine, But I know its not easy to get them . Lots of people are competing for those funds than you have to usually file forms 2 and 3 inches thick

What was the Brilliance of Yisro?

He realized everyone was constantly going to Moshe asking Shalos.

Most things dont really require you to bother the Rav, why should you interuppt the Rav’s learning because you are unsure if you tied your shoelace wrong or you slightly missed a zman. Go to the Rav for a real Shalia thats not so easy or easy to know the answer

Stop comparing University to Yeshiva. University education is for a limited amount of time, usually 4 years for a BA, 2 More for a Masters After that you work.

Yeshiva learning is open ending and the support is infinate

Also you can flunk out of university, if you are not able to keep up, they throw you out, Even the weakest yeshiva students are kept on the dole.

If you want to learn all day on your father or father-in-laws money that is fine or let your wife work hard to support that is fine. However if you are going to expect the masses to support you , you need to live by their rules.

It is also fairly obvious that not one of the Tanaim, Amaraim, or Rishonim used electricity. The reason for this is also fairly obvious; in that day and age, it simply wasn’t possible. It also wasn’t possible to survive without going to work, so they worked. But today, if one is learning and can survive without working, why work?

What is likely going to happen if the Charedim are drafted but refuse to go, is not Jail term, There is no way Israel will jail 100,000 Charedim who refuse to go to the Army, However Benefits will be cut off. Meaning you will have no source of income. Poverty will be even worse than it is now. Children will starve.

Emigrating to the US wont help that, In the US they are cutting benefits too.

    Maybe its not there anymore

It wasnt a fast food place, It was a deli place

maybe people felt ripped off by the 8 Pound burger and didnt eat there and they went out of business.

The food wasnt that good there anyway (Is the food ever good in England – (Joking England is not known for food))

Its been a while since I was there, But i got off the Golders Green underground station and walked down the main strip. I remmeber a restaurant called Milk and Honey (I think) and a deli of some sort, thats where I had the Hamburger

I write 8 lbs because I dont have the pound sterling sign on my laptop keyboard, I have the US keyboard on my laptop and dont want to bother using ASCII to get the pound sterling sign

    zahavasdad

I paid 8 Lbs for a Hamburger in Golders Green (London) and there wasnt even a Bun. The waiter thought I was silly when I asked for a bun and then he realized I was american and gave me one and told me they dont eat Hamburgers with a bun in England

Food was super expensive in Golders Green. I think I paid about 50 Lbs for Shabbos take out food that would have costed me $20 in NY.

Maybe if you are a local its not too bad , but when I was there a Pound was $1.65 and I got killed. The Shekel is worth less than a dollar

I mixed up Northhampton and Newcastle

Ive heard Geordie Accents, and its the only english accent I can barely understand, You need subtitles to understand speakers
