Let the Charedi leadership call out those who throw things or insult who insult the soldiers. Silence = Agreement

it would go along way to ending the debate if soldiers were not looking down upon or worse

I am not going to get into the debate of Learning vs the Army

HOWEVER if even ONE charedi insults a soldier, or does something like going partying in Eilat during bein Hazmanin, It severly damages the argument.

Obviously charedi society is not monolithic, but they put forward the idea that they are monolithic. Obviously most people can tell the differnce between a secular jew who is a lawyer and has a wife and family and a secular jew who is an “alternative lifestyle” with tattos everyhwere. However the charedim themsevles do not distinguist between someone who is an illui and can learn 18 hours a day and someone who can barely learn 2 hours a day

When quoting a gadol, always make sure you know exactly what was asked, in what context and who the psak applied to. IN the case of the smartphone and Eidus nothing was really clear. And always make sure you arent asking the question in order to mock the gadol. There was a video that was posted around including I think YWN of Rav Chaim saying a bracha on Marijuana. This response to this video was generally not positive.

I actually know of a case where a Kiddushin was done without a marriage license. It was a rare case where a legal marriage would have been harmful to someone (It involved government benefits to a disabled individual and had they legally married they would have lost those benefits they needed to live)

“kosher and shabbos are the most important for a jew.”

You keep saying this, on what do you base this statement? Why is taharas hamishpacha, hearing the shofar on Rosh Haashana or kibbud av or any other of the taryag mitzvos any less important?

I dont know where it has come from, but it seems that has become the general definition. There are unfortunatly many people who keep shabbos and kosher and for example do not daven 3 times a day or learn every day

There are also R’L many women who keep shabbos and kosher and wear pants and do not cover their hair

Dont think everyone is doing things for the right reason, some people do things either because of communal pressure or plainly wrong reasons (Wanting to be “frummer” than everyone else can be a wrong reason)

I think Bein Hazamin is very important and it is not a good thing its gets shorter every year.

There is a reason people sleep, go on vacation or do other things to “chill out”. You can get burned out. How often do we hear about yeshiva boys getting burned out. Breaks are healthy and needed otherwise things have the potential to burn out .

The fact of the matter is people with large familes do not pay alot if any income taxes.

You get a tax credit per dependent from the federal government. As frum people tend to have large families they pay little if any income taxes.

I think in 2016 the child tax credit is $1500 per kid, They is a tax credit, not a deduction meaning it comes off your tax liablity at 100% off ratehr than your tax bracket with is usually 15%, but could be 28%

With globalization people need to speak a common language. its one thing if people live in a ghetto and have little contact with outsiders then its fairly easy to keep a seperate language

However with the internet, Global commerce and other things people interacting more its not so easy anymore . English for reasons beyond this discussion has become that language

I’m surprised by the posters writing that the idea that the first 6 Days of Creation were longer than 24 hours is controversial. I don’t know the source, but I always learned that in school, and I went to very Yeshivish schools when I was younger. I really am under the impression that it’s not a controversial point of view, although I don’t have a source off-hand.

As stated by Sam2, Rav Elyshiv stated anyone who did not belive the world was 6000 years old was a Koifer

I think it was Rav AVigdoe Miller or Rav Shimon Schwab (I could be wrong here) said he belived the world was 6000 years old , he did not think it was Kefirah to belive it was older

And Most importantly we are cheating ourselves. it might very well be Halachically OK, but something that if you ask a Rav, he might say, its halachically OK, but I wouldnt do it because it looks shady. Gedolim never engage in things that might be OK, but look bad

When we do things that even look shady even if they arent, we are damaging our Neshamas and we WILL cross the line from things that look shady , to things that really are shady

    They harmed 2 people

There were people who really wanted that coin and were shut out because others hoarded them with back door methods to get extras

Those who bought were offered less than market value because they didnt know that the coins were worth alot more than they were being sold. And it isnt like only a coin dealer could have sold them, Anyone could have gone on ebay and sold them. Took really no time out of my life to do so

Menahls who kick out students for anything less than severve disciplanry infractions (Like Drugs, Fighting etc) for the most part need to be held accountable for their actions and the averiahs they caused others to do.

If you kick out someone for going to a movie and that teen goes to public school and marries a non-jew because of it, Its that Menahels fault

1st cousins are legal to marry in new York,

However it is very clear that generic diseases are more common when cousins marry than not. A perfect example is hemophilia which is genetic, Somehow Queen Victoria of England was a carrier and her children, grand children and great-grandchildren all were carriers. She was also the matriach of many of the European Dynasties of the 19th and 20th centry including Germany and Russia . Czar Nikolai was a grandson and Czarina Alexandra was also a grandaughter of Queen Victoria and they had a son with Hemophilia that likely helped bring down the Romanov Dynasty.

Genetic diseases are also more common among Amish who tend to marry cousins as well

I may have insuated on the roadmap post, that while there might be several routes, all are valid. However you MUST stay on a valid road. You cannot go off road. After I posted some might have thought that I was validating certain ideologies life reform, however those ideologies are not on the map and require one to go off-road to get there.

Also some people really are hopeless. There are people with “alternative lifestyles” that probably will never come back. There was a man from a well known chassidic family who decided one day he was a woman. I dont see such people coming back and its probably a waste of time trying to do so

If someone finds Yiddishkeit miserable and wants to be Free Free of rules, there really isnt a whole lot you can do about it.

However many of the people only find things that really arent halachas, but rather Hashgafas or certain other things objectionable that can be worked around. If for example a woman hates shaving her head , or wants to drive or a man hates wearing chassidic garb and wants to wear western style clothing, but otherwise would remain religious, we need to let those people do those things and let them loosen up a bit. Sometimes the fight over the Levush leads to worse outcomes. Would you rather someone equate levush with yiddishkeite and they hate the levush that they give it all up or would you rather they dress western style but otherwise remain religious.

I want to answer the question about “Failing” some of the so called “Failures” are not failures, just failures according to some . If for example there is a bocher who hates learning, cannot really sit in the beis medrash, but wants to be an artist and seems good at it, Its considered a failure to be an artist as opposed to a Illui. One can certainly be a frum artist. Non-Conformism is considered a failure in certain circles, but in general society they try to use the talents of non-conformists for positive things (Most artists are non-conformists)

    From the Project Makom Website

Welcome to Project Makom, an initiative to help former and questioning Charedi Jews find their place in Orthodox Judaism.

While we believe that there are numerous valid paths within Orthodox Judaism, not all observant Jews are born into a community which fits them. There are many Modern Orthodox Jews who choose to move to the right, but many Charedi Jews who want to transition to a more Centrist or Modern Orthodox community face hurdles that prevent them from doing so (whether cultural, educational, or simply feeling unwelcomed). Some of these people end up leaving religious life altogether.

Makom will offer one on one mentoring so that participants can meet a new friend in a community to which they previously had no access; classes to discuss questions and variances in Jewish hashkafa and law; meetings to share experiences; mediation between families and individuals; tutoring services; Shabbatonim with discussion groups and classes, and more.

    History of Project Makom

Allison asked the readers of Jew in the City to let us know if they were willing to help solve this need. In only a few days, well over a hundred people from all over the world reached out to us, offering to invite people in this situation for Shabbos, help them get their kids into schools, and welcome them into their communities.

We found our co-directors, Mindy Schaper (Director of Programming) and Gavriella Lerner (Director of Education) and began gathering a database of the mentors who had offered their help. Soon afterwards, we had our first event, a shabbaton in Airmont, NY, which was a big success and laid the groundwork for more events.

I will repeat this again about project Makom

There is a frum Woman who has a website called Jew in the City, Its makes slick videos helping give a kiddish hashem to Judaism, She also takes questions from all sorts of people.

It seems alot of former Charedim follow and troll her as well and she takes it well. Once she asked if someone hates being a chassic so much, why go all the way to secular , why not jut become a modern orhtodox. One ex-satmar woman wrote back that she actually tried that, but that she had trouble adjusting to the MO community and just went totally secular.

Alison Josephs (The woman who runs it) decided there was a space there for an organization for people who did not want to be Chassidic anymore but wanted to remain relgious. She got some seed money and has run some Shabbatons. I dont know where things are going now
