SCAMMERS BUSTED: NYPD and Boro Park Shomrim Nab Duo Who Swindled $7K in Fake Dubai Jewelry Scheme

A wild con game came to a crashing end Wednesday afternoon when Boro Park Shomrim and the NYPD caught two scammers red-handed—right in the middle of trying to pull off the same fake Dubai jewelry scam that had already cost another victim $7,000. It began Monday evening on New Utrecht Avenue, when a well-dressed duo in a luxury vehicle flagged down a Yungerman. Claiming to be visitors from Dubai who had been robbed, they spun an elaborate tale—saying they had valuable jewelry but no cash, and begged for a loan, offering the “jewels” as collateral until they could repay. Convinced by their smooth story and appearance, the victim actually got into their car, rode with them to a bank on 13th Avenue, and withdrew $7,000 in cash. In return, he received what turned out to be worthless, fake jewelry. It wasn’t until he discussed it with a friend that he realized he had been conned—and immediately called Boro Park Shomrim. Shomrim notified the NYPD and helped file an official police report to launch a formal investigation. At the same time, the Shomrim intelligence unit jumped into action, combing through surveillance footage and tracking down a clear image of the suspects’ vehicle and license plate. That info was blasted out to Shomrim volunteers  across the neighborhood. Then, on Wednesday afternoon, a Shomrim volunteer on patrol spotted the suspects—back at it again. They had a new victim already in their car and were on the way to another bank, attempting the same exact scam. But this time, they got nervous and bailed—leaving the victim behind. Shomrim members stayed on their tail, updating the NYPD 66th Precinct in real time. Moments later, NYPD officers stopped the vehicle at Fort Hamilton Parkway and 77th Street. The suspects were taken into custody, and the original victim positively ID’d them at the scene. The NYPD is continuing the investigation and urging the public to be alert for similar scams. BORO PARK: Streets Lit Up for Yom Tov Thanks to Shomrim and Brooklyn Borough President’s Office

Boro Park Shomrim, in coordination with Yanky Eisdorfer, senior advisor to Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, helped light up the streets of Boro Park during Yom Tov Pesach. Following a similar effort during Sukkos, when residents along 21st Avenue and 20th Avenue near the cemetery requested additional lighting due to a previous incident, Boro Park Shomrim arranged for light towers to be placed. Throughout Sukkos Shomrim Shabbos Patrol volunteers actively monitored and maintained the lights to ensure they remained fully operational. This Pesach, Shomrim once again worked with Yanky Eisdorfer, senior advisor to Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, to secure additional light towers from NYC OEM and the NYPD to illuminate the area. The effort greatly enhanced safety, especially during the late-night Yom Tov hours, and was warmly appreciated by the community. A neighborhood resident told YWN, “It made a huge difference. Walking home late at night felt much safer. We’re really grateful to Shomrim, the Borough President’s office, and everyone who made this happen.” (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Hatzolah, Lakewood FD, Chaveirim and Shomrim Jointly Warn of Hidden Carbon Monoxide Dangers During Pesach Cleaning

Hatzolah of Central Jersey, the Lakewood Fire Dept., Chaveirim of Central Jersey, and Lakewood Shomrim have issued an urgent reminder to take proper precautions and avoid serious – and entirely preventable – dangers associated with carbon monoxide poisoning. Each year in the United States, thousands of people are treated for accidental carbon monoxide exposure, and tragically, some do not survive. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer – invisible, tasteless, and odorless – and it can accumulate quickly when proper care is not taken. This time of year brings intense cleaning and kashering activities – but they must be done with awareness of physical safety. When cleaning for Pesach, Hatzolah urges you to be mindful in the following areas: COMMON DANGERS DURING PESACH CLEANING: • Leaving ovens on for extended periods (for kashering or to burn off chometz) without proper ventilation. • Running self-clean cycles while the home is closed up tight, causing heat and gas buildup. • Cleaning cars in closed garages while the engine is running. • Using gas-powered equipment indoors or in poorly ventilated areas. • Blocking appliance vents or chimneys during deep cleaning or covering surfaces. SAFETY TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY: • Never leave your car running in a closed garage, even for a few minutes. • Always ensure proper ventilation when using ovens or other gas-powered appliances. • Install working carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your home, especially near sleeping areas. • Do not use grills, generators, or other outdoor equipment indoors under any circumstances. • If anyone in the home suddenly feels dizzy, weak, nauseous, or confused – get out immediately and call Hatzolah. We implore every family to take these warnings seriously. All it takes is one oversight for tragedy to strike R”L. May we all be zoche to a safe, healthy, and uplifting Zman Cheiruseinu.
