In NYC the mayor cut the Police budget by ten per cent transfering the funding to youth services. Who knows what will happen at the next riot. Will they try to stop it or will they sit on thier hands like in Crown Hieghts. There is a big difference between Camden NJ and NYC. Camden has the state and federal government help bail it out. NYC the last time it was broke the when the city wanted a bailout the headlines read DROP DEAD neither the state nor the fed wanted to help. The Financial Control Board will take over and determine the budget. Cops, fire fighter and other civil servants will be fired. The middleclass will move out and we will be back to the 70s & 80s when crime was skyrocketting. Businesses will move and jobs will be scarce so tax revenue will be low and will be unable to pay for social services resulting in riots.

Why don’t you get tested for the antibody? If you test positive it’s highly unlikely that you will catch it again and you can go to minyan without worries, just wear a face mask as a precuation.

What you will have is the wild west with everone carrying a gun with the murder rate shooting through the roof. Criminal gangs will take over the cities and the rich and middleclass will move out. This will guarentee that Trump wins the presidental elections.

These housing complexes are run by a board that is elected by owners of apartments in the building. Since there are a large number of frum owners in these buildings, it is possible that davening with a minyan may be legal as the board decides what the rules are. Also most homeowners don’t vote in these elections so it easier to take over the board similar to school boards in East Ramapo and make it legal. Also since it’s common to have a minyan in the house when one is sitting shiva and there is a large number of frum tenants in these building all of whom are seniors it is quite possible that it’s permitted.

While Trump may not be a King he is the chief executive during a national emergency which gives him more power then your standard president. For example, during World War II President Roosevelt imprisoned All Japanese even second and third generation, mainly living in the west coast. Let’s try not to antagonize the anti semites.

Since there is no private backyards or garages,in Deerfieild, this rogue minyan must be in someone’s dining/living room. A private minyan is probably against zoning, laws, coop and or condo board rules and or housing association regulations, which is why the YI has 1200 members. There is Federal case law in New Jersey when Toms River chalanged a Chabad House, permitting prayer groups of up to 50 people in a home. If small private minyans are allowed in apartments, why join a big shul where you can only get a kibud once or maybe twice a year, when in a small minyan everyone can get a Kibud every week. Why walk out of the housing complex when you have a minyan in the building?, I could be wrong but shul dues and assorted fees are between $2-5 thousand per member, while an apartment minyan cost nothing unless they want to hire a cantor and or a bal koray.

Yes you can submit a freedom of information request with the NYPD the only problem is that there are thousands of compliant made each day in NYC about social distancing and each compliant is on a different page each page cost $.25. It can be very expensive so unless you are making money out of it, I don’t think you should put in the request.

What this will do is encourage the break away minyan to be permanent. Since they already have a minyan it’s not hard for someone to use a garage or basement to make it permanent. If any of the members of the rogue minyan are popular, such as former officers of the YI,, they can recruit others to join their minyan. YI has a mortgage and salary expense for the rabbi, the lose of income during the pandemic plus the loss of income from the loss of members will push them closer to bankruptcy. People who join a backyard or porch minyan regularly go to shul and the loss of these members from YI may make it harder for YI to maintain a daily minyan.

In NYC when you call in a compliant whether it’s to 911 or 311 the operator asks and records the name and telephone number. Even if you call Hatzalah and don’t speak to an operator they will automatically call you back to verify everything is okay, so your phone number is recorded automatically. When this is over lawyers will sue the city for attempting to close back yard and or porch minyanium, at which time all this information will be revealed.

The number of people dying in the US from auto accidents is around 40,000 per year but back in the late 70s and early 80s it was over 51,000 per year. Just a little less than died from Covid -19.. Did any one stop driving then or now? By your definition anyone who speeds or breaks a driving rule or even has a drivers license is a murderer.

Perhaps schools and shuls should start opening with security that’s there anyway scanning the students’ and or members’ temperature as they enter to insure everyone is well and doesn’t transmit any disease. This is only once the governor gives the all clear and allows them to open.

Most yeshivas and probably day schools too run on a deficit which they make up with fundraising. They also pay very little and even that they don’t always pay on time. Cutting salaries will result in staff loss resulting in larger classroom size i.e more pupils per class and or a dirtier school. Parents will remove their children and the school will cease to exist.
The school needs to charge full price and hope for the best, that most parents will pay. Even in the best of times some parent are behind in payments and now that there is a pandemic even more of them will be behind. They may have a scholarship fund which helps parents who can’t fully pay the tuition but because of the lock down there are too many parents applying.
As far as cutting the salary, most schools have contracts which states how much they are going to pay each employee so they can’t do that. Also since they are paid so little they may not be able to find qualified replacements.

Why stop at life insurance what about burial insurance? Back in the days every Jew was part of a Chevra Kedushah which took care of the burials. Now a days hardly anyone is a member. The cost just for a burial plot can be as high as $50,000.00 in some places both in Israel and in Brooklyn. Add at least another $10,000 for taharah and other funeral expenses. The cost back then was $20.00 a year per family a lot cheaper then any life insurance policy.
Yes there are charities that will bury the poor, but just as you are trying to convince people to buy life insurance so to0 should they buy burial insurance. What happens to the deceased if they don’t have a burial plot or the cemetery is closed or there are no flights to Israel, due to the pandemic. I guess they just have to wait.

Why limit it to just life insurance why not also provide housing and food also.. Most Yeshivas are on a very tight budget and can’t afford the extra $5.00 per week per employee of additional expense. Most people are on a tight budget and given the option would rather forgo the insurance for more food or clothing. Even with insurance you will be surprised how soon they blow through it.

Another factor is will Trump help flip the House of back to Republican control? With rallies out Trump is getting his message out while you don’t hear much from Biden

This is an interesting question as this is a case of indirect damage in which case the person causing the infection would not usually be liable. Also there are no witnesses that can testify when and how the infection occurred. Another question is was the victim wearing protection i.e. was he wearing a mask and gloves. Just like someone going out in the middle of the winter without a coat and catches a cold. Also since over 80% of the people infected do not require hospitalization. Did the person causing the infection cause the hospitalization or was it the weakened state of the victim that caused it. I am not sure how you can find someone liable in this case.

I never meant that you can not catch it by going to a minyan. My main point was that the vast majority of people dying and or catching corona virus have never attended a minyan in their life. They probably caught it in a store or other public area because they were not wearing a mask. It’s been almost four weeks since the virus started and I think all shuls have been closed either voluntarily or under threat of closure by the government. So the only minyanim that are around are underground and difficult to find. And if found will just pop up elsewhere. If you really want to combat this epidemic and not just rant, the government should start distributing masks to the public and likewise go house to house testing people so those infected with the virus wouldn’t transmit it to others.

The spread of this disease is not caused by minyanium but by people not wearing mask and gloves while in public areas ie shopping or on the street. This needs to be stressed as the mask prevents transmission and the gloves prevent contact with the spores. It’s a lost cause trying to convince someone who is currently davening with a minyan to stop

Reb Chaim is only talking about Israel not the US there is no Health Ministry here just Dept. Of Health. There has been a method of treatment that has been successful. The stay at home is only to reduce the rate of infection so that it doesn’t overwhelm the healthcare system. Once we can cure as many people as are newly infected the epidemic is over. So let’s pray that this method of treatment works even though President Trump will probably claim credit. Who cares as long as we can daven normally.

Interesting concept call the cops on someone that is praying. Only problem is that it’s not a crime to pray as long as you maintain social distance which is 6 feet between people. The police will come but if it’s on private property they need a warrant to get in. All you are doing is wasting the Policeman’s time. All you are doing is preying on the praying.
As far as denial of medical services to people who pray with a minyan we as a society have spent trillions on AIDS and lung cancer which are caused by lifestyle either smoking and or drug abuse. I thought you guys want health care for all.

Your Rosh Yeshiva was talking about when part of the minyan is in one room and part is in the other because they are in separate rooms and can’t be combined but once there is 10 men in one area then video conferencing would work. so that you can answer amen. In Israel where backyard minyans are allowed this maybe a solution. If you have a mishnah bruriah look up chapter 55 statement 20 you can see it for yourself.

Now that New York needs aid to fight this epidemic do you think Trump will give it? Sure he will authorize some aid but because he knows he wouldn’t get any electoral votes from NY it will be a low priority. For example the state claims they need 30,000 – 40,000 ventilators and the Fed gave 400. Who is going to advocate for New Yorkers Schumer or Nadler after the impeachment I don’t think they will get a dime from him.

The Mishnah Bururiah in 55:60 states that once there is 10 men in one place the schinah is there and even if he is in a separate house very far away from the minyan he is combined with them and even if there is a metal fence it isn’t considered a separation from his father in heaven.
When the Shulchan Oruch was written they didn’t have video conferencing perhaps it was written that way so that in our situation we can use it to have tifilah bitzibor while keeping safe. Once people get use to praying alone then even after this plague is over they nay not come to a minyan. So while attending a video conference minyan doesn’t have the taste of a real minyan it is better than praying alone.

Reb Eliezer – In Shulchan Orach Orach Chaim Chapter 55 sentence 14 the author clearly states that even if one is behind a shul, if there is a window that is not 4 but he can see in, he is combined with the minyan. Also look at chapter 55 sentence 20 where it clearly states that once there are 10 Jewish men, a minyan, even if one is not there he can answer Kadidsh and Kiddusha as long as there is not an idol or excrement between them. It would appear that video conferencing would work in this case as you don’t have to see or hear, merely have intention.
Please consult with a competent Rabbi as I am not saying this is common practice, Halacha La Miesaw.

Once there is a minyan in one place even if there is a wall separating them they can be combined to the minyan assuming they can see each other. In the Siyum everyone was in the same stadium so therefor they were considered one minyan even though they heard it via speakers.. However, in your case there is no minyan to start and you want to use video conferencing in order to make the minyan I don’t think it works.

I think many of you fail to understand that there are people that must work. I don’t think my work is critical and the Governor stated that employers should let their employees work from home half the time, but my boss didn’t get the message. In order to go to work I have to use the subways and I try to keep my distance. As long as I am using the subway I see no difference between it and going to shul. I go around after work looking for a minyan as most shuls are closed.
The only reasons I would stop going to work are:
    A) Boss says I don’t have to come in
    B) Health Dept. gives me paperwork that I have to be quarantined.
    C) Get a doctors note that states I can’t come to work.
    D) Mass transit system stops running.
These minyunim are mostly outside on the street with 10 – 20 people and adequate spacing between people.
I am not saying you should daven with a minyan now, but once people get used to davening in the house it going to be harder to get minyunim in shuls. I don’t think this will go away in a week or two. It will be months before it gets back to normal i.e. no new cases.
Also if you are sick don’t daven with a minyan. Likewise, keep adequate spacing between people during davening and do not speak directly in someone else’s face as you maybe transmitting the disease also no hugging or shaking hands.
Most Rabbis disagree with me hence all shuls are closed in Flatbush as far as I know. But if it is so contagious why are the subway and buses still running? The title should be why are shuls closed while mass transit is running ?

I realize that some of you consider me to be less of a Jew because I want to keep shuls open and Daven with a minyan. Unlike many of you I can’t stay home and telecommute. I have to be at my desk and in order to do so that I have to take a subway each day there and back. While the Governor may say use less crowded trains you can wait all day until you find an empty train. The trains are still full there is no six feet barrier between riders although it maybe easier to get a seat. So if it is as dangerous as you claim why are the subways which is under the state jurisdiction still running.

I try to daven mincha during lunch time and usually can find a minyan and perhaps the merit of praying with a minyan protects me from the virus but there are those who work in the neighborhood and usually would daven with a minyan but since their rabbi said no davening with a minyan even with masks and gloves and a separation of over 6 feet, they wouldn’t come.

Over 80 per cent of those who catch it don’t even realize they have and those who die from it have other health problems which contributed to it. I for one will continue to go to shul and pray for those sick with these disease.

Lowerourtuition Covid is contagious but you have to weigh the benefits of learning and davening verses the chance of dying from Covid-19. For all you know thousands or even millions including you, have it but its so mild they don’t realize they have it. Even if you don’t have it are you staying home and not going to work. How will you get food and water if you don’t go outside to shop. The water maybe contaminated.

You must believe in G-d and if you do and pray to him he will protect you. How can you cross the street maybe a car will come and hit you. You believe the car will yield the right of way to you but not that G-d will protect you?

Do you really think that if shuls close everyone will daven 3 times a day. Or that thousand of kids will stay home and not play out in the street?

If schools are closed parents would have to stay home to watch them. But we need people to work in order to survive. You need truckers to bring food supplies to the stores, and people to stock the shelves, police, to maintain order, medical staff to maintain hospitals otherwise there will be riots.

The power of prayer and of learning will protect us so I don’t think closing schools or houses of worship will help reduce the epidemic.

Perhaps this epidemic came because how we mistreated the antivaxers. Just as we expelled them from schools so too we are being quarantined from society.

Burnt Steak – You maybe correct that 1 plastic bag is more harmful than a paper bag. But if we are going to replace the millions of plastic bags used annually with paper bags thousands of trees are going to be cut down each year.
Trees convert carbon dioxide into oxygen via photosynthesis . You can goggle it if you don’t believe me. This is suppose to be taught in elementary school if secular studies were taught at your school. The amount of oxygen generated is based on the number and size of leaves on the tree. Humans need oxygen to live which they breath in and exhale carbon dioxide. If thousands of mature trees are cut down each year and it takes years even if they are replanted by saplings immediately until they can produce the same amount of oxygen as the ones cut down. This will reduce the percentage of oxygen in the air, which will require many humans to be walking around with oxygen tanks.
What effect this will have on animal life is unknown but many will die.
An easy solution is to incinerate all garbage this would save billions of dollars that we spend shipping garbage out of state and country, as our dumps are all full. If done properly with scrubbers on the smokestack it can be environmentally friendly and everyone can use disposable plastic bags.
