“does anyone know of a perscription med that is an appetite suppressent?”

For what it’s worth, according to webmd.com the only prescription diet pill approved by the FDA for sale in the US is Xenical Oral.

Did you ask your doctor? I dont think anyone on this site would write you a prescription, even if you asked nicely and said please twice.

“You’re implying that the public perception of our rabbonim and R”Y is that they are hypocritical and are suggesting a solution for the masses which they would never follow themselves or suggest for loved ones.”

    You have an overactive imagination.

The meiri in moed kattan (or is it ran?) Ties in this bas kol with the “other” less famous bas kol mentioned in conjunction with this one. “Sadeh ploni liploni” also calls out the nedunya he will get from ploni along with plonis daughter.

And why repeat it every day (girsa in moed kattan), presumabely the bas kol is calling out the same bas ploni, liploni.

(I started looking into this inyan a little) For what it is worth, the gemara in moed katan, yud ches amud beis, brings down the same thing about the bas kol, but instead of 40 days before yetiras havlad, it says “bchal yom vyom”. Not sure why the different girsa or if any meforshim explain the difference.

Also, there is a (famous?) Teshuvas Harambam (siman tav lamed vav)to “Ovadia the Ger”, he discusses shidduchim as it relates to a persons bechira (even though there is a bas kol) as part of the broader discussion of hakol bidei shamayim chutz miyiras shamayim. I wont venture to write how the Rambam explains this without thoroughly going through it.

2 days ago we called our Rav with this exact shaila. We knew a neighbor was considering a certain institution for their child and also knew that this child would not mesh with the mechanchim there. (Yes, I am being very vague, intentionally). What is relevant is, were we permitted to tell the neighbor about certain traits of certain faculty members and how it would be a negative experience on their particular child. Our Rav told us that he would review the relevant halachos and speak with his Rebbe prior to answering us. We have our answer, and all I can say is, unless you are an expert in the appropriate halachos, keep your mouth shut. If you truly believe you must say something, find out what you may say, to whom you may say it and how you may say it.

The Maharal in chiddushei aggados (sotah beis amud alef)writes the following (after explaining how/why shidduchim is like krias yam suf, 1st zivug, 2nd zivug):

    ??? ????? ?? ???? ????? ???? ???

    ??? ???? ????? ???? ?? ??? ???? ?? ????? ??????

    ?? ?? ??? ???? ???? ?????? ??? ???? ????

    ????? ???? ???????? ??? ???? ?? ????. (?????).

He doesnt explain why, just that the notion behind the question is false.

I apologize if the copy and paste doesnt work cleanly and some words are unreadable.

It might (I stress might – have no source for this) be why it says bas ploni, liploni . Of course, this explanation has many holes, not the least of it is that it doesn’t explain how it works when bas ploni is older than ploni.

Then again, I don’t understand how krias yam suf worked either, and hashem had no problems pulling that off, so I figure do your hishtadlus and live with tamim tihyeh I’m hashem elokecha.

More than Einsteins approval; what would change public thinking, perception and action, would be, the Rabbeim and Rabbonim who sign onto and endorse such initiatives, sign up their own family members and encourage their own mispallilim to do the same and make shidduchim for their own children, grandchildren, talmidim and mispallelim using guidelines suggested by such initiatives. (Yes, that was a long run on sentence, hopefully Einstein won’t disapprove).

    I was being facetious.

If your program is successful, I just wonder what all the girls aged 20-22 will do with themselves? Most will have finished their year in seminary, their 14 month degree from any of the degree mills that abound, and still be 12-18 months away from marriage. Graduate school? A job in the city? Some new beis medrash program for females?

Just curious what the Rabbonim who endorsed this program suggest and approve these girls do?

Jeez. Jesus. Any other form of the name. Jesus is the anglicised form of the latin for this name, which is in turn a take off of the greek form of the name given to this fellow (some take it one step further back to hebrew). For the record, this name is never found once in the entire xtian bible!

If you dont want to use this name in any of its forms, you should probably refrain from saying the days of the week too. Thursday for example is just the anglicised version of thors Day with thor being the greek god of something or another. In fact, I would suggest saying thursday is worse than saying jesus. (boy, this discussion has come a long way from the nasi program!) Go with yom rishon, sheini etc..

AZ. You want to destroy stigmas against “older” girls, then stop perpetuating it. Progressively increasing the escrow deposit as girls get older perpetuates this stigma in the worst way.

As an aside, ask any shadchan just how true the statement “boys date the girls who are redt to them” really is.

Any program that eliminates the need to jump through hoops of fire to get a yes from a guy would be truly groundbreaking.

Boys date the girls that are redt to them, however, they marry the ones who pass the vetting process of their mothers. Unfortunately, money in an escrow account payable to a shadchan and not guaranteed payable to the son on a monthly basis for X years, is not something she is looking for for her tzadkik and gaon of a son. A truly game changing program would be a kol koreh signed by the 70 Rabbonim decrying the warped values and attitutes prevalent in todays world of shidduchim.

One does not have to be a navi to know that money talks. It always has, always will. The gevir who had money in the shtetel had shadchanim banging on his door. The gevir who let’s it be known that a shidduch for his daughter is worth 8

X always has people knocking on his door. This program just institutionalizes the concept, helps spread the word in an organized manner, facilitates and guarantees payment, but at the end of the day

it is simply the same concept. Yes, I am sure that financial incentives to the shadchan, will get girls attention. I am sure larger financial incentives will get more attention. What this has to do with closing the age gap I don’t understand, perhaps I am just stupid, but if these girls get attention from shadchanim and gets them married, who cares. The ultimate goal is to get them married.

I am certain that girls who are part of this program will get engaged and married at a higher proportion that those who do not. Money talks. However, if a father would let it be known in the street that there was a bounty on his daughters head for a shidduch, he would have people banging down his door with shidduch suggestions as well. The only difference is that in your scenario the father and his daughter get to save some shred of dignity by not having to declare this publicly. Only authorized shadchanim will be privy to his busha.

It’s a start. I admit I dont have any better idea. Hopefully it will be successful.

OK, so nobody likes her suggestion. Any others?

I have no kids in, or imminenetly approaching this stage in life, so have no first hand experience. Empirical evidence however, coming from redting shidduchim, shows that just getting someone to agree to see someone is rather difficult. Many assumptions and leaps of faith about other peoples families, attitudes and behaviors are made based often on heresay and (usually biased) judgement of other people.

Nanacy Reagen said, just say no, in shidduchim we have taken it to an extreme.

This latest initiative is a carrot for shadchanim to invest time in older singles. This is not an initiative to alleviate any stigma against an older single. In fact, it perpetuates those stigmas by basicly bribing shadchanim on a sliding scale, the older the girl the larger the bribe, to expend time and effort on those older singles. I wish it works. I wish every girl signed up has 12 guys willing to date her by parshas yisro. Unfortunately, and unless, shadchanim (or anyone else) are willing to dangle a similar carrot in front of boys to actually say “yes” to girls, nobody will gain, except the bank where all the funds are being held.

I think it is safe to say that if anyone writing on this topic is thinking about joining the IDF, they would consult their Rav. So, if mine would say, go for it, and yours would say hell no, I dont see the problem. I will follow my Rav, and you will follow yours. Unless one wants to get into the very childish game of my Rav is bigger than yours, the discussion should end with this.

As an aside, I am wondering what the teshuva of R’ Moshe on “social dating” (platonic relationships with members of the opposite gender) has to do with sitting through a female member of the IDF singing hatikva (or its howdy doody time). I think a more appropriate teshuva would be the one that appears in the newest volume where he reconciles the issur lihistakel afilu bietzba ketana and the fact that there is no requirement for a woman to cover over certain limbs, depsite this issur. I’m not anyones Rav and see no reason to elaborate further. Anyone who has any questions in halacha would be best served by speaking to their Rav instead of the poskei CR.
