Hate to respond negatively to an overall positive message, but Av is not the 9th month, it is the 5th (we refer to the tzom harivii, tzom hachamishi and tzom haasiri, for example). Even if we were to ignore the fact that Nissan is the first month and count from Tishrei, the date would be 11/9, not 9/11 (month/date).

Unless Tina18 has an AGI greater than 400k, some portion of the 30k she mentioned is deductible.

Regarding CHP, the State of NY Dept of Health website has a calculator that helps determine eligibility and premiums (if any) based on family size and income.

Your medical expenses, including premiums are tax deductable provided they exceed 7.5% of your income. Based on the 30k figure you give, unless you have annual income greater than 375k or so (I am guesstimating) this should not be an issue. You must also itemize (fill out a schdule A) when doing your tax return (this means, you must file a tax return, which I assume you do). Why dont you speak to your accountant.

I still don’t understand or get the assertion that working boys are less yeshivish that learning boys because this person has not defined “yeshivish”.

“what happened to the good old days off to spend time with the grandparents or any other family orientated activity???”

It is very possible the grandparents are at work, so they can help their married children make ends meet. Grandparents these days are a lot younger than they were in the “good ole days”. How many 42 year old grandmothers did you know 25 years ago compared to today?

Where does one draw the line? If someone davens in a minyan factory with 12 simultaneous minyanim and one has a bris, do they all skip tachnun? If there is a bris at the kosel, do all minyanim at the kosel skip tachnun? Only the simultaneous minyanim? What about the minyanim up to pusukei dzimra when the bris is taking place?

“this whole idea that since i can sit and learn for about 6 hours a day i deserve to get $36000 a year of support, is a brand new concept”

This past Sunday we received a call inquiring if the father of a certain was willing to commit support of $50,000 a year for 5 years.

(The girls father replied, yes, on the condition he tells me what hishtadlus he has done, or plans on doing, for years 6 and beyond.)

We have neighbors who used to smoke on their porch and the smell made its way over to us. We spoke to them, but they just couldnt understand what bothered us. We overheard the smokers mention that they hated the smell of certain foods. We made sure to buy a portable griddle and fry up this food on the porch so that the smell would reach them. Now, they understand where we are coming from and don’t smoke where the smell will reach us.

Nothing like working it out like adults 🙂

It is a vicious cycle. Over worked, under appreciated and probably under compensated (possibly even never compensated) shadchanim, working harder and harder to make shidduchim, and as parnassah dictates will go after the lowest hanging fruit (the “easy” girls). On the other hand, more and more girls growing older with less and less interest from shadchanim, resulting in even more nervous, or even hysterical people making even more phone calls and further badgering the already over worked under appreciated and under paid shadchanim. The cycle has to be broken somewhere, why not with monetary carrot dangled in front of shadchanim? I admit, I think the idea stinks, but a bad idea such as this is probably better than nothing at all. Anyone have a better solution? Spit it out.

ABCD. You opened by complaining about a grandchilds siddur play. If you cant make it, you cant make it. It is hard enough to accommodate all class parents, now you expect them to check with all grandparents too? If they did that, they will never hold a play. All they can do is give some advance notice and hope people can make the appropriate arrangements. If you miss it, you miss it. Its not the end of the world for you, your children or your grandchildren. Of course I can understand the pressure to attend if the other bubby or zeidy was there and you are not……but, that is not the schools problem.

Just do away with all school parties. Come up with another way to make the receipt of a siddur (chumash, mishnayos, gemara) important in the eyes of the students. Perhaps have a local Rav come in and talk about the chashivus of tefilla, on their level of course.

I dont know if there is an equivilant anywhere near Gateshead, but for those who live in the NYC area there is “The Gluten Free Shoppe” in Boro Park.

Regarding tax deductible….Blue Cross allows me to use FSA dollars for the purchase of Gluten Free products (if in USA, speak to your health insurance company), the paperwork is a bit tedious and all claims must include a letter of medical necessity, but it certainly helps offset the costs of GF foods.

Most major commercial food companies now list all major allergens on their packaging.
