Those of you who finished high-school: what percentage of your classmates went OTD?

    0

And how would you label your school (Chassidish, Yeshivish, MO)?

    Very right-wing Yeshivish.

GITGEZUGT – what I said is – I’d love to see real studies done that can prove that there’s a higher rate of teens at risk amongst a specific group. I don’t think conversations with Chinuch professionals in the YU/Sterns Torah U Mada group would qualify as a study. It may enlighten, however that’s not what I consider real proof.

in reply to: Cause For Teens At Risk? #688749

GITGEZUGT – if anyone has studies that are done which prove that there’s a higher rate of teens at risk amongst a certain group – I would love to see that data. Untill then, it’s unfair to claim -as many of the above posters have – that there’s a higher rate amongst a specific group.

Why our lives are divided into sections the way they are.

On the first day, God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the

door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past.

For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.”

The dog said, “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten

years and I’ll give you back the other ten?”

    So God agreed……

On the second day, God created the monkey and said, “Entertain

people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a

    twenty-year life span.”

The monkey said, “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty

long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?”

    And God agreed……

On the third day, God created the cow and said, “You must go into the

field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves

and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a

    life span of sixty years.”

The cow said, “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty

years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?”

    And God agreed again……

On the fourth day, God created humans and said, “Eat, sleep, play, marry

and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.”

But the human said, “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my

twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and

the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?”

“Okay,” said God. “You asked for it.”

So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy

ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our

family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the

grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and

    bark at everyone.

in reply to: Cause For Teens At Risk? #688745

I think that it’s both unfair & not true to say that there’s a higher rate of teens at risk in any specific group. There are teens at risk from all backgrounds.

A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The officer says,’ I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.’

The driver says, ‘Gee, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60; perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating. ‘

Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: ‘Now don’t be silly — you know that this car doesn’t have cruise control.’

As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls,

‘Can’t you please keep quiet for once!!’

The wife smiles and says, ‘Well, you should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did or your speed would have been higher.’

As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth,’Can’t you be quiet?’

The officer frowns and says, ‘And I notice that you’re not wearing your seat belt, sir.

    That’s an automatic $75 fine.’

The driver says, ‘Yeah, well, you see, officer, I had it on, but I took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket.’

The wife says, ‘Now, you know very well that you didn’t have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you’re driving.’

And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket, the driver turns to his wife and barks, ‘WILL YOU PLEASE SHUT UP??’

The officer looks over at the woman and asks, ‘Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma’am?’

    (I love this part)

    Super Bowl Ticket

A man had front row, 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As he sits down, a man comes down and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him. “No,” he says, “The seat is empty.” “This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event in the world, and not use it?” He says, “Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we haven’t been to together since we got married in 1987.” “Oh … I’m sorry to hear that. That’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else, a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?” The man shakes his head. “No, they’re all at her funeral.”

If you want to scream & yell that it’s a foolish idea, that’s your choice. But, a shadchan who gets a check from you after spending tens of hours on your child’s shidduch which didn’t work out, will be more motivated to redd you additional shidduchim. Shidduch Solution – I think that you are making an excellent point. At a certain point – the single needs to be involved in their own shidduchim. It’s a difficult & painfull Parsha & needs great sensitivety, but you are 1000% right.

in reply to: Shidduch World #1013831

jewishandworking22 – that’s why ShidduchWorld should excite people. It’s a new approach. To say that it is producing the same results is unfair, because it’s a new site. But, hopefully, it’ll have a lot of hatzlocha!

happy girl & haifagirl – the site was only recently launched. That’s why people speading the word about it will greatly help in adding adding names of singles. The larger the database becomes, the more people will be helped.

in reply to: Shidduch Parshah Question #669928

It’s inappropriate. A shadchan can ask for a picture for reference reasons, but a boy’s mom shouldn’t be asking for a picture.

in reply to: Shidduch World #1013809

I think that everyone is focussing on 1 small part of this site. I think the main goal is to create a huge database of Frum singles. This is a great idea & I wish the dedicated person who set this up much Hatzlocha!!

in reply to: Shidduch World #1013777

AZOI.IS – that’s one of the features of the site. I’m not sure how that works, and can’t answer your question on that. But, the main purpose of the site is the database -singles enter their info & are matched up with possible shidduchim. Which, by the way, is at no cost to them.

    Older Woman: Oh, I see.

Officer: Can I see your license please?

Older Woman: I’d give it to you but I don’t have one.

    Officer: Don’t have one?

Older Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving.

Officer: I see…Can I see your vehicle registration papers please.

Older Woman: I can’t do that.

    Officer: Why not?

Older Woman: I stole this car.

    Officer: Stole it?

Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.

    Officer: You what?

Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see

The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma’am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Older woman: Is there a problem sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

    Older Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please.

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma’am?

Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers.

    The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.

The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer.

The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma’am, one of my officers told me you didn’t have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

in reply to: Are Some Yeshivas Too Large to Function? #666237

My undersanding is that this post is about BMG – Lakewood. I think that there needs to be a little bit of an explanation given. Most bochurim coming to learn in Lakewood, are coming to BMG when they are at least 22-23. They have spent numerous years learning in other Yeshivos – both in the US & in E”Y – prior to coming to BMG. So, they already have a Rebbi or R”Y to whom they feel close. Most Bochurim are blessed to have a warm, personal relationship with a Rebbi or R”Y. So, although BMG is so large and many Bochurim aren’t zoche to have a close kesher with the R”Y, at least they have a Rebbi or R”Y from their previous Yeshiva.

in reply to: IS There a Shidduch Crisis?? #666957

jewishandworking22 – you stick with them and I will stick with Rabbonim.

But, at the end of the day – these aren’t statistics. Each bas yisroel – and there are HUNDREDS of them – that is single isn’t a statistic. When the Rabbonim hear from both girls and their parents how hard the shidduch parsha is, and they see a way to help them – they sign onto a Kol Korei.

in reply to: IS There a Shidduch Crisis?? #666955

jewishandworking22 – I’m happy that we can agree to disagree, and go home and be friends!

Just for the record – I think the Rabbonim were given facts – numbers, etc. and based the Kol Korei on that. It’s a pretty simple cheshbon if you look at the numbers that there are so many girls in shidduchim and a shortage of boys. This is partially because there’s a large age gap between when the girls start dating as opposed to when the boys begin. So, based on that, they are encouraging shadchonim to try – if possible – to try to make shidduchim amongst couples close in age, which will even out the numbers.

in reply to: IS There a Shidduch Crisis?? #666953

jewishandworking22 – now I understand that you disagree with the entire “yeshivish society” as you like to describe it. So, your issue really isn’t with this Kol Korei, but with the society in general.

Allow me to give you a Moshol that is similar to this situation: A business owner was advised by a group of Rabbonim that it would be helpful to provide the products that he sells to people who are having a hard time obtaining them. The Rabbonim never told him he can’t sell to other customers. He was just asked, that if he can, he should try to assist the customers who are having a difficult time getting the items that he sells.

If I was that business owner – I would try to listen – of course, only if the sale makes sense – to the Rabbonim.

Your Moshol about the Eruv is a Halachic question. The issue at hand isn’t a Halachic one – there’s no Halacha in Shulchan Aruch to pasken from.

The age gap issue is one that is based on numbers. 60 Rabbonim were shown how there is a problem with our current shidduch scene. They all agreed that if they advise shadchonim to attempt – if the shidduch makes sense – to make shidduchim amongst couples close in age, this will help improve the current shidduch problem. They never wrote to only make such shidduchim. And they never wrote anything more than what they feel will make a difference. To claim otherwise is incorrect.

Your dislike for the “yeshivish society” may want to make you disagree with what they have said. But, if you read what I wrote – you will see what are the true facts as to what the Rabbonim really wrote.

in reply to: IS There a Shidduch Crisis?? #666946

jewishandworking22 – I never said that the Rabbonim have said a RULE, what they have done is publicize their Da’as Torah that shadchonim should attempt to make shidduchim amongst couples close in age. You don’t agree with them & feel that you can tell 60 Rabbonim what they can and can’t say.

in reply to: IS There a Shidduch Crisis?? #666937

jewishandworking22 – You truly are not understanding this issue. Your “moshol” is way off . The Rabbonim have spoken, and you don’t agree with them.

in reply to: IS There a Shidduch Crisis?? #666925

jewishandworking22 – you write – let everyone find their significant other without guidelines from any outsider. No one is forcing anyone to marry anyone else. The Rabbonim have written a Kol Korei encouraging shadchonim to try to make shidduchim amongst people close in age. They haven’t issued any guidelines, and to say they have is false. Of course, if a shadchan feels that a shidduch is appropriate even if it is far in age – no rav would tell the shadchan not to suggest it. The Rabbonim never set statutes and said whom can date whom, when and where. You are putting words in their mouths!

in reply to: IS There a Shidduch Crisis?? #666918

If you have a child in shidduchim – then it’s a crisis. If someone else does – then you don’t think it’s really so bad. But, people with kids in shidduchim, rich & poor alike, as well as choshuv & plain, all agree that today’s shidduch scene is a crisis.

in reply to: YOU can Resolve the Shidduch Crisis #664584

Mezonos Maven – I am sure there are ma’alos to both learning in E”Y and learning before one gets married, but if we restructure the present system – we’ll marry off hundreds of our singles. Maybe it’s time for change.

tzippi – it’s not something that has to be “across the board” – if there are bochurim who need more time in E”Y – great, noone is shlepping them back. But, we have created a culture that encourages boys to wait till 23 to start dating, when many of them can really start dating younger. It’s today’s fad. and it can and should change!

yoyo – yes, they can daven!!

in reply to: YOU can Resolve the Shidduch Crisis #664577

Mezonos Maven – I’m not sure what NASI did or didn’t ask the R”Y to sign, I really have no idea. But – and here I’m gonna drop a bombshell – one can learn a)in America b)while married. So, while the R”Y value learning – what does that have to do with learning in E”Y? There are B”H plenty of Mosdos Hatorah here in the US where a Bochur or Yungerman can learn. We need to analyze what has changed over the last twenty years in the shidduch scene, see where the problem has come from and try to fix it. By having Bochurim go to E”Y 6 months younger, return 6 months earlier (no Torah lost in E”Y) & begin dating earlier – we’ll greatly help the current situation.

in reply to: YOU can Resolve the Shidduch Crisis #664574

Mezonos Maven – I haven’t claimed that they’ve said that. All I said is that when they do that – it’ll GREATLY help our current shidduch scene. It’s so simple – we can add 500 new boys into the shidduch scene 6 months earlier. It needs to be done, and if the R”Y start with their own children & grandchildren – it’ll change the trend to how it was 20 years ago – when there was no crisis….

in reply to: YOU can Resolve the Shidduch Crisis #664567

tzippi – easing the other “gaps” will help, but it won’t solve the main issue. If it’s a numbers problem – the other gaps only accelerate the main one. Truthfully, I think the only thing that’ll really help – short of mandating – is to see the Rabbonim & R”Y have their own children & grandchildren marry close in age & return younger from E”Y. When the “hamon am” sees this – they’ll follow suit.

in reply to: YOU can Resolve the Shidduch Crisis #664561

cherrybim in order for the ration to remain 55-50, the boys have to marry girls their age. If they begin dating at 23, and the girls start at 18 – it’s no longer 50-50.
