    Nishtdayngesheft, okay, let’s analyze:

Vogue is questioning internet for her future kids, and zd responds that he makes a living from the internet.

There are two ways to read zd’s comment: (a) a simple statement about his own situation, and how it would be affected if everyone went off line, or (b) telling Vogue to sell out her values. You chose (b), probably based on past posts of his.

So you accused zd of telling Vogue to sell out her values on the off chance that she would ever purchase from him. There are two ways to understand your comment: (a) an honest negative reading of zd’s comment, or (b) nastiness. A couple of posters chose (b), probably based on past posts of yours.

The chashash ribbis is if the price of a container of milk goes up, but two bottles of pre-measured milk, even if one has ? oz. more, are worth precisely the same amount.

Sam, ZD, popa: it was a comment which, ahem, deserved a response, but the response didn’t seem to fit.

Juke, she is a student who wants to get married, and is thinking about what she wants her future home to look like, and it’s a very valid topic for discussion.

Seriously, though, unless it’s a cheap tin menorah, I wouldn’t do it. Automatic dishwasher soap is abrasive, and I wouldn’t take a chance on silver or silver plate. Glass cups could break during the cycle (unless you somehow secure them) which could not only ruin the glasses (obviously), the shards could ruin the dishwasher.

ZD, nobody’s telling you how you should or shouldn’t earn money, but you post seemed to say that you have a problem with someone staying away from internet, because you’ll lose business. That would be ridiculous, but you probably didn’t mean it that way.

Right. So stam gift giving would be fine, but davka giving on Chanukah, which was copied from them, might be the same as taking off the yarmulka to daven, which is still assur. Ayin shom.

Ubiquitin: Good question. Not ever giving gifts doesn’t make sense, nor does on any Yom Tov, because it’s unlikely to be a copy of the goyish “minhag”. Giving on Chanukah would be the problem, since Chanukah gifts are seemingly a copy of their ???. I could definitely see a tayna that it’s only assur on Dec. 25; in fact, I wonder if even the mattirim would agree to asser then.

Jewish Thinker: If there’s religious significance, being logical doesn’t help. Google “origins of christmas gifts” to see what the significance is.

My advice: put in the 220 line. I believe the seller who says they don’t dry well. (but call Towne Appliance to confirm; I’ve found them to be knowledgeable, honest, and helpful. Also well priced – you might want to cancel Lowe’s and buy from them.)

You will end up selling them at a big loss, but if you take the 3050, you will take it with you (unless your new place has gas).

There is most definitely religious significance associated with gift giving. I’m not the world’s biggest expert on the non Jewish celebrations, but what I’ve heard (and Google confirms) is that the gifts supposedly come from a saint or from yoshke himself, and are associated with yoshke and the wise men.

How much would installing a 220 line cost? What is the difference in price between the combo unit and regular units?

As far as how well they work, I would call Towne Appliance in Lakewood and ask. I would expect that they’ll tell you they’re not great. At least one seller’s website has a disclaimer:

“*** Washer and Dryer combos will never dry your clothes at 100%. ***”

You can ask them for the price differential on the different units as well, and figure out if the higher cost of installibg a 220 line is worth the convenience.

If you haven’t, you should also ask your landlord if he would partially pay for the line, since it does improve his apartment for future tenants.

Also, have you looked into installing a natural gas line?

There is actually a reason to think Chanukah presents are actually ???? ???”?.

Assuming that it is a copy of the goyish “minhag” of giving gifts on their ???, which is not an unreasonable assumption, then there would certainly be at least a “??? ????? ??????” and would be assur.

It is unlike the case which the Rema is mattir, the doctors’ uniform, in which the reason that non-Jews do it is completely free of ?????? and ????? ???.

am I correct that sheep and goats cannot be classified as glatt and certainly chicken cannot?

Sort of. The kula of the Rema, allowing a certain type of adhesion, doesn’t apply. However, the lungs most definitely do need to be smooth (chickens are assumed to be so without checking).

So as a matter of labeling, “glatt” is irrelevant, because if it’s kosher, it’s glatt. As a technical matter, lamb, veal, and fowl (I’ve never seen goat in the local grocery) is in fact glatt.

If you are going to insist that we follow the Rambam on women not leaving the home and thus not working, there if you are intellectually honest there would be no issue regarding women (or, for that matter, the government) supporting full time learners because the Rambam forbade learning Torah without a parnassah

Is there a particular reason to think those two halachos are dependant on one another? I ask, because we follow a particular Rishon (or posek of any generation) for one halachah, but not for another, all the time, with complete intellectual honesty.

You obviously like that psak of the Rambam; you quote it often. You should have the intellectual honesty to realize that we don’t pasken that way.

    Same disclaimer for this:

    Jelly Doughnuts (Sufganiyout)

    Ingredients:

1 (25-oz.) package frozen bread roll dough, thawed according to package directions

    Vegetable oil

    1/2 cup granulated sugar

    1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 to 1 cup seedless raspberry jam*

    Powdered sugar

    Preparation:

    Prep: 27 Minutes

    Total: 3 Hours, 2 Minutes

    3. Whisk together granulated sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Add warm doughnuts to sugar mixture, tossing to coat. Let cool completely on wire rack (about 15 minutes).

    4. Make a small slit in side of each doughnut, using a paring knife. Place jelly in a zip-top plastic freezer bag (do not seal). Snip 1 corner of bag to make a small hole. Pipe jelly into each doughnut. Dust with powdered sugar.

    *Strawberry jelly may be substituted.

I found this online, but didn’t try it, so I can’t vouch for it:

    Bubbie’s Potato Latkes

    Hanukkah Latkes

    Total Time: 1 hr

    Prep: 30 min

    Cook: 30 min

    Yield: 6 to 8 servings

    Ingredients:

6 to 8 potatoes, finely grated

    1 onion, finely grated

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

    All-purpose flour, if needed

    Vegetable oil, to fry

    Directions:

Mix the potatoes and onion with a wooden spoon in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add just enough flour, in small amounts, to bind the ingredients together. Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a medium skillet. Working in batches, drop large spoonfuls of the potato mixture in the pan and fry, turning once, until golden brown.

    On divrei Tannaim.

    I already pointed that out.

    Yet, it is correct.

It would only be ridiculous because in practice it won’t result in more men in the Beis Medrash.

No, it’s ridiculous to ascribe these motives to something which is so obviously based on feminism.

Whether they should expect this particular tactic to work is a different story.

PAA, so kasha reisha aseifa. I would answer, chisurei mechs’ra, v’hochi kotoni: we want to be MKs, but that won’t fly, so let’s make up reasons why it benefit the tzibbur, d’haynu, (v’chulhu).

Also, none of the three reasons make sense.

The first reason presupposes that male MKs would otherwise be learning. Meiheicha teisi. Furthermore, it’s ridiculous to assume that those clamoring for female charedi representation are motivated by wanting more men in the Bais Medrash.

The second and third reasons assume that charedi men don’t value women’s opinions, and in fact, don’t value them at all. Aside from being profoundly insulting to charedi men, to assume that the male dominated charedi political parties would wake up one morning and say, “You know, they’re right, we hate women, so let’s make them MKs”.

A couple of points to add to the discussion: writersoul, you said, “I’d just love to know what exactly was in the minds of the gedolim when they made the psak”, and, “Because it wasn’t just “ehh, let’s just asser something else for ’em.””.

I think that’s not what’s going on. There was probably never a psak on the matter, because the issue probably never came up. I would assume that the downside of having a female MK is pretty obvious, and the “upside”, egalitarianism, is not at all seen as a positive, so it seems unlikely that there was ever a female candidate suggested, and that gedolim had to pasken against it. As PAA points out, it would only happen out of great necessity, and there likely hasn’t been any; I don’t know that anyone ever “assered” it, more likely, it was never brought up. Maybe hypothetically, in the right situation (unlikely to ever happen) it would actually be deemed muttar.

The second point is on writersoul’s comment that the reason probably isn’t merely, “status quo is awesome.” Well, no, but if it came up, the idea that change without compelling reason is dangerous would surface.
