SaysMe, it’s really not easy to advise someone to quit with “only” a year and a half left to a degree from a “real” school. I would likely advise you to stick it out if it were only a question if the work, the time, and even the pressure.

However, the ruchniyus issue is a different matter. I don’t know the situation, and I don’t know you, so on this you really do need your mentors’ input. Try to work out some way of getting through this intact; shiurim, Partners in Torah (even better as a mentor), books, etc. Run some ideas past your mentors, and see what they think.

Another thought; will your current school accept any online or Touro credits so that you can minimize your time in campus? Or are you already maxed out on Sem credits?

    It’s all relative.

My brother-in-law thinks anything more than $5 is expensive.

My cousin thinks anything less than $100 is cheap.

He quotes the Rashba that holds that an Ohel Zaruk is only a problem when it is being held by a person or Keilim.

As opposed to a beheimah, not as opposed to not being held up.

We don’t rely on this Hetter when it comes to Tevilas Keilim.

I thought of the same thing, but, OTOH, I don’t think we make brachah, at least according to some poskim (I have to check).

I don’t think Hashem created this nisayon. The people who are of the opinion that we should discard science created it.

You’re conveniently ignoring the very prevalent thought that the rationalists are apologizing, and the Torah is ch”v not min hashomayim.

You can’t get out of the fact that it’s a nisayon.

It’s a stupid idea and will most likely backfire.

I will predict what will happen. The secular media will have mixed reviews. The Jewish Week, et al, will say how bad the chareidim are. The Yated, Hamodia, et al, will say what a kiddush Hashem it was.

There will be at least three threads about it in the CR, with many saying what a chillul Hashem it was (fill in the names of your favorite cynical, MO leaning posters), and many saying how wonderful it was (fill in the named of your favorite frummies, most of whom will be Joseph).

Except that we have other observable facts; the words of the Torah and Chaza”l. And no instructions to disregard their simple, literal meaning in the face of science.

You didn’t answer my (well thought out, IMHO) post regarding an ancient appearing world being a nisayon.

I wear a kipa on this head of mine.

I daven Mincha at the proper time.

and by Havdalah in my pockets I put wine

I shake a lulav, which my neighbors think insane

I like to bury my gefilte fish in chrein

because the Torah tells me to I do that too,

I do the strangest things a man could ever do,

Oh there are times when I where sneakers with my suit

and I must confess that it looks rather cute

‘Cause I am a Jew I do that too.

Oh once a year I twirl a chicken over my head

because the Torah tells me to I do that too,

I do the strangest things a man could ever do,

Oh, once a month I go outside and bless the moon

and once a year I have to eat all afternoon

and then eat matzah till I have no strength to chew

then I eat horseradish until I am turning blue

because the Torah tells me to I do that too,

I do the strangest things a man could ever do.

It really doesn’t make sense- how can you argue for an exemption for Torah learners to people who don’t believe in the power of Torah learning?

According to the article posted on YWN, the intended audience is frum Yidden.

This is not a new issue, and this ‘psak apparently is. Why?

The issue is supposed to be taken care of, as El Al now avoids cemetaries in their flight plans. It’s not a new p’sak or eitzah. I know about this for years; I know someone who did it.

When one sits in a Succah when its Pouring, Its considered to be a Chassid Shoteh.

I’ve seen him called a hedyot.

Many here do think this is a Chilul hashem are saying this man is a Chassid Shoteh.

    So what? They’re mistaken.

Its certainly within Halacha to say someone is a Chassid Shoteh especially in a case where most agree this was a little extreme

It’s odd looking, yes, but extreme? Do you have a better eitzah?

It’s entirely possible that non-Jews will understand more than secular Jews, because they’re not encumbered by their own guilt. But that’s not the point. This event, according to the YWN article, is not being organized to sway non-Jewish opinion anyhow, it’s meant to bring the issue to the fore for frum Yidden.

I’m sure we will see much negative media coverage, but almost any publicity turns negative, and that doesn’t automatically make it a chillul Hashem. The benefits and costs have to be weighed, as in most decisions in life.

Are you even willing to consider the idea of Chassid Shoteh.

    Not in this case.

What would someone have to do to be a Chassid Shoteh?

Not save a drowning woman for “tznius” reasons.

Wait until after removing his tefillin before jumping in the water to save a drowning child.

Fast every day, weakening himself so that he can’t properly daven and learn and do other mitzvos.

If it is for a coverage by the media, seems like the organizers don’t think the tefillos are enough to make any impact.

That’s silly. If you go to work, does that mean you think your tefillos for parnassah aren’t enough to make any impact?

The motivational industry has been pushing the stuff for decades, so we have decades worth of failures to prove the negative effects.

There have been an ever increasing number of computer virus infections, along with an ever increasing number of virus prevention programs.

I guess I’ve proven that Norton and the like cause computer viruses.

Ubiquitin, I said no mohel does MBP with open sores, and intuitively, it definitely seems dangerous.

I don’t know if the two cases are comparable, though. There are plenty of cases in which people have fallen from high places and died without a parachute, and plenty of cases in which people have safely used parachutes. So we know that parachutes are necessary and effective, even without a study. Do we know for a fact that an open sore causes the transmission of HSV? Maybe we do; I don’t know, I’m merely asking.

An example is the principle of bending rules when not doing so puts Torah to ridicule.

You’re assuming that there exists a legitimate loophole for Kohanim to fly over a cemetary. As a hedyot, you shouldn’t be doing that.

Kohanim (even those without a shtar yichus) are proscribed from entering or passing over a cemetary even if they are previously tamei.

Eh. Who needs such bechira? Hashem didn’t seem to care much for it at Har Sinai. They tell us we’re supposed to yearn for mashiach yet they say Hashem’s existence will be obvious then. It’s a cop out.

I don’t think we should be deciding which nisyonos HKB”H should be challenging each dor with, but it’s clear that He does give a different set to each generation.

It’s also clear that many do find various scientific assertions challenging, and it would be folly to say that HKB”H didn’t know that this would be a nisayon. So, it’s fair to conclude that at least part of His reason was to present a challenge to bechirah. I don’t see why there needs to another reason (applying “Ein Hakadosh Baruch Hu ba bitrunya im briyosav” assumes this nisayon to be insurmountable; it clearly isn’t as many are ma’aminim despite the appearance of the world, and I doubt this is a bigger nisayon than the yetzer hora for A”Z).
