CT Laywer: “So sad to see what has happened to the Beautiful Bronx…”
It will probably bring tears to your eyes if you lived across from the Schiff Center which had been the center of the secular Jewish community in the East Bronx for several decades from after WWI to the 1950s. I’m not sure the Mods will allow a link (below) to a photo of the former Schiff Center today but if not, just google “Jacob Schiff Jewish Center and Bronx” and you will see the photo of a once majestic building with a big sign “El Mundo Super Discount” just below still visible carvings of the shnai luchos with the lions on either side. The paint is peeling off the facade but one can readily visualize what once was the center of secular Jewish life in the Bronx (along with at least a dozen big shuls that are now Evangelical Churches).
P.S. You probably don’t recall an ice cream place (defnitely not cholov yisroel) called Jan’s across from the Paradise Movie Theatre on the Grand Concourse where it was common back then for the MO crowd to go for “dates” on motzi shabbos. I suspect you already had moved on to New Haven by then.
October 23, 2019 5:59 pm at 5:59 pm in reply to: Requirement to tell your guests that your pasta is made from chickpeas? #1794262GadolhadorahParticipantCherrybin: Actually, chicpea pasta is very “global warming” friendly. I won’t aggravate Reb Yosef with musar on the importance of tikun olam (the most recent addition to taryag mitzvos) but within several months, we will he having a debate here on the merits of hashgacha and whether its OK to serve beyond beef burgers or impossible burgers at an otherwise dairy/pareve meal.
GadolhadorahParticipantBenph: Thanks for the additional details. I never knew R’ Rubin ran for Congress against Biaggi…a name from the past. I think that Congressional seat is now held by AOC. How times have changed. When I was last in the old pelham parkway neighborhood, the old YI building on Lydig avenue had been sold (probably many years earlier during the severe downturn in Jewish life in the Bronx) and the tzibur had merged with the old “Jewish Center” shul with the much nicer building on Pelham Parkway South. I’m told there actually has been a real renaissance in Jewish life in that area over the past several years.
As far as Mikvahs, somone at the program I attended recalled that there had been at least one functioning Mikvah for an extended period of time at the Mishkenos Yisroel shul on Southern Boulevard but that was in what your refer to as the EAST Bronx and not in the WESt Bronx. (There were also several rebbaim from the Salanter yeshiva over on Webster Avenue involved in that shul)GadolhadorahParticipantTheir is (and I suspect will be) a constant tension between “changing” halacha to “fit the times” vesus interpreting halacha in the context of the times. Some have analogized the debate to the parallel legal arguments about constitutional jurisprudence and a literal versus textual versus originalist approach. Not that we ever should equate the issues associated with analyzing what the framers in the constitution meant in 1776 versus what chazal had in mind hundreds of years ago but there are some analogies. If we accept the invariant “correctness” of a core set of principles and rules, than we will always need a mechanism to resolve questions on how to apply those as times change. In simple terms, the lawyers have SCOTUS and we have gadolim. For some reason, BOTH seen to work in the large percentage of instances although there always seem to be those dissatisfied by the outcomes.
GadolhadorahParticipantBenepahraim: I davened many times at the YI of Pelham Parkway (when it was on Lydig Avenue) and R’ Rubin was the Rav of the shul (which at the time may have been one of the largest frum shuls in the Bronx). However, I don’t recall their having a FT chazan every Shabbos. I do recall that R’ Rubin was very well connected politically both in NYC and Albany and he was appointed as the first official “Statewide Rav Hamachshir” in the Department of Agiculture with a staff of “Kosher Policemen” after NYS became the first state to enact strict “truth in labeling” laws regarding Kashruth. Less known were his multiple efforts to undertake special missions overseas on behalf of government agencies to assist yidden worldwide.
GadolhadorahParticipantLowertutition: Didn’t Vigoda ultimately take Rosenblatt’s slot at Ohev Tzedek when Rosenblatt left or am I mixing up a different chazan/shul??
GadolhadorahParticipantA cabbage is round, signifying the annual cycle of the torah readings culminating in simchas torah. When I was back in school, one of our rebbeim would frequently challenge the class to come up with “creative” inyanim as to explain some really arcane minhagim. It was actually fun and you would have been amazed at some of the rationales offered (e.g. cooked cabbage has a smell like that of the schach and décor of a very wet succah by the last of a rainy scuccos).
GadolhadorahParticipantThanks AJ: I recall that when growing up and spending Rosh Hashanah with relatives, we used to go to Tashlich at THE Bronx River across near the Bronx River Parkway and Fordham Road near the Zoo entrance.
GadolhadorahParticipantThe vast majority of posts on LinkedIn are either job-related or include material directly relevant to professional matters or substantive technical forums. It would make very little sense for a yid looking for a job or seeking to expand his/her professional network to restrict themselves to a “Jewish LinkedIn” with a tiny fraction of the possible professional openings or contacts. If someone was just interested in socializing or flirting, they wouod use FaceBook, Tinder, J-Date or any one of dozens of other social network websites rather than LinkedIn. Are there a few exceptions? Of Course. But don’t restrict yourself because a few LinkedIn users might not post appropriately.
GadolhadorahParticipantHalacha Yisroel, din hoo…..minhag Yisroel, weeeellllll, it depends on the minhag….maybe yes, maybe no.
GadolhadorahParticipantBecause all the other great food with a heimeshe taam had already been committed to other yom tovim and the gadolim turned thumbs down on sushi.
GadolhadorahParticipantBenke….”liking” a post by ANYONE (male or female) on LinkedIn, Facebook etc. is not different than someone like Reb Yosef favorably commenting on a post here in the CR by yours truly. I don’t stay up nights in mortal fear that the GadolHatrolls is secretly enamored with GadolHador (ah)
October 20, 2019 2:31 am at 2:31 am in reply to: Black suits for brothers of chasson and kallah? #1793710GadolhadorahParticipantHuju: Inhale….hold-your breadth….exhale….repeat. I suspect your are simply jealous that an adam chashuv such as Reb Yosef chose to comment favorably on my post.
GadolhadorahParticipantDY: OK….attribute the psak to Adam Chashuv Schiff
GadolhadorahParticipantCA…Thanks….
October 18, 2019 6:53 pm at 6:53 pm in reply to: Can EY rely on U.S. committments of support if there was an Arab attack? #1793632GadolhadorahParticipantReb Yosef: How come the kiddush club at your shtieblach starts so early?? You obviously have had several l’chaims too many. Yidden’s best friend since GW?? With friends like the Trumpkopf,……..
Anyway a gutten moed and gutten shabbos.GadolhadorahParticipantPlants are living things too and chazal bring down that the same prohibitions on t’zar baalei Chayim apply equally to donkeys and dandelions. Some make a big fuss about the pain to chickens from shlugging kaporos but where is PETA and the other groups during Succos when we are shaking the daylights out of lulavim. For shame!!!
October 18, 2019 11:47 am at 11:47 am in reply to: Can EY rely on U.S. committments of support if there was an Arab attack? #1793547GadolhadorahParticipantBravo and well done for effectively sanctioning the Turkish invasion and occupation of the territory of another sovereign nation. I’m sure he will be extending high fives to the Trumpkopf the next time Russian surrogates occupy more areas of the Ukraine, when China builds more outposts in the South China Sea and Cuba claims it requires a protective zone on the coast of South Florida. The President simply emboldened one of the biggest anti-Semites in the Middle East consistent with his embracing dictators like Putin, Bolsonaro in Brazil Duterte in the Philippines and Orban in Hungary (not even mentioning the ruling monarchs of Saudi Arabia etc.).
GadolhadorahParticipantIn a worse case scenario especially when flying in the winter months buy a cheap surgical mask in the drugstore and wear it in the boarding area and when you sit down. In at least 50 percent of the cases, it will guarantee you an empty adjacent seat without your having to engage in deceptive language or dressing up as if you were a potential nutcase reading an Arabic version of Al Jazeera upside down
GadolhadorahParticipantYou can purchase extended warranties for up to 5 years for apple iPhone products within the first year of purchase. There are also lots of small repair shops that will repair iPhones if the “fix” is relatively simple at a cost less than $200 or thereabouts (anything higher exceeds the replacement value of the older phone). Apple is very clear about the term of their warranties and that some products (e.g. the new ear bud earphones) are “sealed” and not meant to be fixed.
GadolhadorahParticipantIs there a special imoji for gadolim and other intellectual giants sharing their wisdom here in the CR? My kids tell me the imoji I thought was the most appropriate is instead the one they use to reference “dorks” in their text messages.
October 18, 2019 11:44 am at 11:44 am in reply to: Requirement to tell your guests that your pasta is made from chickpeas? #1793537GadolhadorahParticipantGuests with dietary restrictions will ask for ingredients if they are concerned or otherwise advise you of their restrictions when you invite them. If you are using an ingredient typically unexpected in a particular dish (e.g. using real meat rather than tofu or vegetable-based “meat”) you might “volunteer” the special recipe components as in BTW I made the kugel with cauliflower rather than potato. Likewise is you make a dish with ingredients that some might have higher hashgacha standards than your own (e.g. “pre-washed romaine leaves) than also a courtesy to share the information with guests. Otherwise I don’t typically give a detailed printout for each dish served for guests.
GadolhadorahParticipantAfter reading through 132 posts, I come away with one question. What will all the misnagdim do if they wake up in the morning and discover moishiach has arrived and he sets up his interim HQ on Eastern Parkway while arranging a charter flight to EY?
GadolhadorahParticipantWe can bring down a mashol from chazal where in a similar inyan it was decided to split the item in half and donate the front end to Kids for Cars and the back end to a local rehab program for those suffering from parking rage.
October 16, 2019 9:56 pm at 9:56 pm in reply to: Investigate Congressmen and Bidens with FBI & Special Counsel #1793203GadolhadorahParticipantReb Yosef: I’ll have one of our associates research relevant caselaw and provide you with arguments and a table of authorities that preclude the scenario you describe. Again, really fine troll.
October 16, 2019 11:23 am at 11:23 am in reply to: Investigate Congressmen and Bidens with FBI & Special Counsel #1793008GadolhadorahParticipantReb Yosef: As a troll, about 4.7 out of 10 (and most of those points for artistic merit, not technical skills). In theory, Moshe Rabenu could have peititioned pharoh for a restructuring of the monarchy, emancipation of all the slaves and payment of reparations for decades of yiddesh servitude. That also would have made it much easier for yidden who were not anxious to take swimmin g lessons in case something went wrong with k’riyas yam suf.
October 15, 2019 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm in reply to: Investigate Congressmen and Bidens with FBI & Special Counsel #1792945GadolhadorahParticipantReb Yosef normally trolls us using semi-logical and coherent, albeit outrageous assertions, In this case he sadly fails to offer us his usual comic relief since he adopts a Trumpkopf talking point of “impeaching” members of Congress (who obviously are not subject to Article I, Section 2, Clause 5 impeachment proceedings but only to an expulsion vote by their peers). Impeachment is NOT a criminal proceeding but reflects the judgement of member of the House and Senate that a sitting President has engaged in “high crimes” where that can be whatever they decide it mean, including the Trumpkopfs vulgarity, consistent disparagement of his political opponents, promoting his own properties etc, much less decisions leading to bloodshed in Syria, Further,” treason” is a defined legal term that does not remotely include subjective judgements by other politiicans about the fitness of the Trumpkopf to occupy the oval office.
GadolhadorahParticipantIf you are over 65 (or know someone who is) and find the special 65+ flu vaccine for seniors available, get the shot NOW. They are in very short supply and some locations will not have new shipments of the 65+ injections. The production is limited bvecause it costs more to produce with narrower margns.
GadolhadorahParticipantGoogle didn’t know the Russians had gamed their search algorithm to change rankings and misdirect search results. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen (unless you live in Trumpvelt).
October 11, 2019 12:50 pm at 12:50 pm in reply to: Black suits for brothers of chasson and kallah? #1792585GadolhadorahParticipantMamelleah: False alarm…..it turned out to be a NYC fireman dressed in a white hazmat suit running towards the fire this morning at the lubavitch headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway. See breaking news story in the main YWN news links.
October 11, 2019 10:17 am at 10:17 am in reply to: Black suits for brothers of chasson and kallah? #1792550GadolhadorahParticipantMammelle……He was just sighted on Eastern Parkway between Brooklyn and New York Avenues.
October 10, 2019 11:41 pm at 11:41 pm in reply to: Black suits for brothers of chasson and kallah? #1792298GadolhadorahParticipantI’ve seen this trend too, although not too frequently. Its really a spillover from the routine goyishe minhag of having the “groomsmen’ and “bridesmaids” in the wedding party wear matching suits and dresses with colors not to distract from the bride/groom. For most frum/heimeshe weddings the choson will be wearing a dark suit anyway so a dark grey/navy/black suit would be indistinguishable. Requiring an exactly matching black suit to the choson’s suit is not the yiddeshe way.
October 10, 2019 11:33 pm at 11:33 pm in reply to: Can EY rely on U.S. committments of support if there was an Arab attack? #1792161GadolhadorahParticipantThere is a fairly wide range of opinion within Israeli intelligence and military ranks as to exactly how much “support” will be forthcoming under different strategic scenarios. The biggest concern is in the intelligence area where the U.S. has historically not always “shared” real-time intelligence even while providing military hardware. The concern here is Trump’s incredible self-focus and absence of rational analysis and how that would play out in a scenario where providing support might not be popular at the moment. Watching how quickly he distanced himself from his own words on the Kurds and always seems to “blame” someone else for adverse outcomes, having a brass plate on a building in Yerushalayim will be of little help. Some here may recall how close EY came to open conflict with U.S./U.K forces during the 1956 Suez campaign. While we are nowhere in that situation, even with Trump, his “love of Israel” should be taken like just about any other Trumpism….don’t take it to the bank.
GadolhadorahParticipantBen-Eprhaim: For those with a LONG memory, Rav Altusky, Z’L was also the rav at the Congregation Mishkenoth Yisroel Shul (aka Hachnasas Shearith Yisroel Shul) on Intervale Ave in the East Bronx, which if I recall, was the only shul in that neighborhood that had a mikvah. And yes, I realize is off-topic so apologies the the CR enforcers. Back then, there were a lot of smaller “niche” hashgachos with creds tied to the rav hamachshir, which for Rav Altusky were the highest.
GadolhadorahParticipant“Triangle K is on Hebrew National”
I’m sure that most YWN readers don’t hold by Triangle K or any of several other large commercial hashgachos but in reality, at least from my perspective, its better that hundreds of thousands of yidden feel they are “doing good” by purchasing Hebrew National versus treifus “all beef” hot dogs. Hopefully, they will eventually come to realize that there are gradations of kashrus but we should avoid implying that R’ Ralbag is deliberately choteh u’machti harabim with his hashgahca.October 7, 2019 6:43 pm at 6:43 pm in reply to: Don’t harm a fellow Yid selling on Amazon, even if it helps you sell more. #1791858GadolhadorahParticipantIf a seller is deliberately posting fake reviews on a yid’s website to destroy the parnassah of a legitimate seller, yid or goy, WHY is that ganof entitled to special consideration?? If you observed someone robbing your “brick and mortar” store, you would call the police immediately and not consult your rebbe to determine if the ganof perhaps has milah. Why should a virtual store be different??
GadolhadorahParticipantT2T…..not just flanken but also schmatlz herring, kishka and broccoli. If you are going to invent rumors, focus on something more credible like the Trump’s secret deal to build a world class casino with top of the line chadissehse hashgacha and special spa with Mikvah in Uman.
GadolhadorahParticipantMy understanding (subject to your updating) was that the Triangle K hashgacha under R’ Yosef and R’ Aryeh Ralbag offered a hechsher for BOTH glatt and non-glatt products and that some yidden would only want products from a hashgacha that was exclusively glatt? If I have that wrong, please clarify.
October 7, 2019 12:19 pm at 12:19 pm in reply to: ומי במים – Anyone else think about the summer? #1791755GadolhadorahParticipantYes, there were several tragedies this past summer but from a longer term perspective, not at all unusual or statistically out of the norm in terms of those who were niftar under tragic circumstances. We have had summers with greater numbers of auto accident casualties, civilians killed in terrorist accidents in EY and elsewhere etc.
May we ALL be zocheh for a g’mar tov and may hashem bring solace to the familes and friends of those were were niftar over the summer.
October 6, 2019 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm in reply to: Don’t harm a fellow Yid selling on Amazon, even if it helps you sell more. #1791669GadolhadorahParticipantbk613…….In most cases, one amazon seller would not know if the other seller posting fraudulent reviews is a yid or a goy. Assuming, arguendo, he has a suspicions, he should warn the other seller of his intention to file a complaint with Amazon unless it stops immediately. If it continues, than I’m not sure why he/she would need to involve a Rav. Amazon is not the police and an offender will not be thrown into jail. The worse case scenario is that he/she (and affiliated posters) will lose their ability to post fraudulent ads.
GadolhadorahParticipantHas anyone experienced the reaction when it was proposed to install a mechitzah for the small room outside the beis medrash used for the Kiddush club? It got real ugly very quickly
October 6, 2019 8:26 pm at 8:26 pm in reply to: Don’t harm a fellow Yid selling on Amazon, even if it helps you sell more. #1791588GadolhadorahParticipantI’m not sure what kind of scam you are talking about since the post is a bit confusing. So some ostensibly ehrlicher yidden first posted phony reviews on your shviger’s competitor’s amazon website telling the world that the treifus snacks he sold were delicious and then moved on to your shviger’s own website complaining that his chazerfleish didn’t taste nearly as good??? First, while its not assur for a frum yid to sell treifus to goyim, how does he know that some of his customers aren’t yidden who don’t know better. In simple terms, I have my own issues with a frum yid selling treifus online where he doesn’t know his customers. Separately, such phony reviews are a violation of Amazon’s terms of service and if your Shivger’s competitor is found to be complicit, he/she can be thrown off the website permanently.
October 4, 2019 2:13 pm at 2:13 pm in reply to: Why doesn’t the coffee room accurately reflect last update #1791254GadolhadorahParticipantSince for many threads, any correlation between the OP and the responses is purely coincidental, the lag in updating shouldn’t be a problem. The new software, once the bugs are worked out, will randomly assign responses to topics, but do so on a real time basis.
GadolhadorahParticipantTime for Truth: Not sure if you are serious but for most young women, even from more traditional families, if her Choson’s family invited her to a shvitzbath to “check her out”, she should invite them ALL to go toivel in Lake Erie in mid-January.
ADocs: Definitely a lower cost option than most Simcha halls in BP and Willy plus in some cases, would save the choson a separate trip to Mikvah. Yichud in the sauna followed by a cold dip outside by the fire hydrant. Where do you guys come up with these brilliant ideas??GadolhadorahParticipantCA: Maybe everyone should get a stent according to you as preventative measures according to you ??
Maybe…..I have a great idea of a great candidate for such preventive therapy…a particular obese individual who is likely to be subject to considerable stress over the next few months……
GadolhadorahParticipantGrey Matter…..you are probably correct but my frame of reference doesn’t go back that far. Were there really moshichists running around during the time of the beis hamikdash??
GadolhadorahParticipant“whoever says he/she knows when Moshiach is coming,is either a fool and a shoite or a charlatan or both”….
Well, you paint with a broad brush. Perhaps the guys who show up once or twice a month running up and down Eastern Parkway waving yellow flags BUT there have bee some fairly chashuvah rabbonim (and a least one chashuvah rebbitzen) making these types of predictions over the past several hundred years but I wouldn’t call them “fools” or “shotehs’.
GadolhadorahParticipantFB: Another reason for installing “unisex” bathrooms with only stalls? On a serious note, it would be a big cost to convert existing facilities, even if there is arguably a tzinius issue for a small percentage of the tzibur. Its perhaps feasible for a small shtiebal but think about the additional space required for a shull with several hundred daveners.
GadolhadorahParticipantLakeshut….yup, all 20+ of the Dem candidates are reshaim gamurim as compared to the groise tzadik (or should we settle for gross tzadik) tweeting away in the WH.
CA: Fake news…..one has stents inserted so that you DON”T suffer a heart attack.
