Avram:
The truth is the truth, it is not negative or positive. They are “low end” of the pay scale, and becuase they don’t pay well, the workers will find it harder to save for retirement.
Mailmen & sanitation workers make a large amount of money, BTW. Plus they get a pension, which most workers don’t get.
What are your thoughts regarding the original question?
gavra_at_workParticipantBoruch Hashem he probably saw the handwriting on the wall.
Slashing salaries in half is probably required to pay bills. One of the Chassidish schools should take it over.
gavra_at_workParticipantIMO, scholarships should be moved to loans that must be repaid on a schedule, starting from the day the child graduates from high school. This way, the school has a continuous revenue stream.
In the yeshiva world, this would not work, as men who go to kollel or low paying jobs will just be stuck in a circle of debt.
Maybe where 80K is normal, but not where 40K is the norm, and children are in school when the parents are in their 60’s. The word “loan” is meaningless.
And yes S, I thought you might say that 🙂 I’m looking for others’ opinions as well.
gavra_at_workParticipantthe dragon was slain in the middle-earth era by moderator3, moderating is much easier now. however the river of fire still is quite challenging.
Mod3: Short guy, barefoot, can “disappear” at times, huh?
lol
gavra_at_workParticipantThen again, how can mitzvos and our inborn rachmanus contradict?
It is called Mechias Amalek.
If one has to have the upper hand on the other, then the mitzvah must “win”, no? So is it really a battle, or am I just not able to see the harmony?
That is part of your responsibility to have Shviras HaMiddos. Too much Rachmanus is bad. Shaul HaMelech learned that the hard way, by allowing Agag to live.
DHM: That is a silly question, and you know it, so I won’t call you on it.
gavra_at_workParticipantLook, I don’t doubt there are people who are always there for every minyan.
Firstly, they obviously have access to a mincha at work or school.
Secondly, their day is probably not very long.
My day is 6:45 to usually 8:00. I daven shachris at shul, and there is sometimes a mincha in my building. I am not going back out for maariv at 10. I am going to sleep.
My situation is, I believe, more typical. Take a poll, ask guys who are working at real jobs (not 9-5). I just don’t buy it.
I have to agree with Popa here. Living and working OOT means that there is no minyan on every corner 24/7, and sometimes it is just not doable. As with everything else in life, there are halachos as per when and how far one must go to daven with a minyan.
gavra_at_workParticipantOffen a Gemorah Chulin 109B.

gavra_at_workParticipantIt’s never too early to work on your shidduch profile, so….
Sit at the beach and work on your tan 🙂
Seriously, I like Popa’s idea. You can also try bikeriding (as a girl, you don’t have to worry about minyan & the sort).
Another option is to use the money saved by not going to camp on a project, such as rebuilding a car, cake decorating classes, or even sign up for early college courses at your local college.
Good luck.
gavra_at_workParticipantAries, thumbs up.
No tzedaka organizations (or individuals who need tzedaka) have the rights to another person’s money.
Double thumbs up.
gavra_at_workParticipantWhen was the last time you walked through Harlem and someone came up to you and said “You Jews, you can’t be so reliant on government programs you need to get jobs.”
Better question, when was the last time you walked through Harlem?
LOL.
The issue has been brought up in the NYT and other papers regarding communities such as New Square & Kiryal Joel.
gavra_at_workParticipantNo one adressed the fact that if my rebbe was rav ruderman or rav hutner thats what i would be told to do!!
That’s why they call it a red herring.
Yummy, but distracting.
Or is it a Fallacy of Accident?
I’m not sure. I’ll put up the Ruy Lopez with the Marshall Counterattack & Chewbacca Defense.
gavra_at_workParticipantI might live in the wrong place but sadly i live in the area with the most frum jews!
I’m going to speculate where that is…..
sounds like Benei Brak.
I’m sorry to hear that is what you think. I believe you will find the truth not to be so.
gavra_at_workParticipantDHM:
I would trust Reish Lakish. I just wouldn’t trust myself to actually be a Talmid Chacham, even if I was one.
Speaking of Reish Lakish, he is one of my favorite people in Gemorah (together with Chanan Bisha). Not for being a BT, but for not leaving any yerusha.
Awesome, truthful shittah.
The difference in my opinion is that Heter Mechira is like opening bottles on Shabbos (also R Shlomo Zalman’s heter)- a big kula but not a radical departure from Halacha. Zionism though, it didn’t start by the frum. We always had a ahava for E”Y but Zionism was a modern creation and you know how some of us feel about that. V’haMaskil Yavin.
Pun Intended 🙂 I can live with that. I’m not bothered by the Zionist angle either way, because as you pointed out before, Zionism is dead (like all the ‘isms before it). And as I pointed out, my point is not about Zionism, but about current people (not Tannaim like Rabbanu HaKadosh (same Gemorah)) being Somech on a “Nes”.
gavra_at_workParticipantJoseph?
Please note this question has been asked many times. Refer to the (now sticky) post “how to find older threads”.
gavra_at_workParticipantBTW, KT, you live in the wrong neighborhood.
Where I live, many of the Baal Habatim that work are talmidei chachamim in their own right, who give shiurim, are mechaber sforim, etc.
Perhaps you should move from where you are to a Makom Torah?
gavra_at_workParticipantIt is a famous story with Rav Gifter.
What KT fails to mention is that the next day, Rav Gifter came himself to take out the garbage, saying perhaps for you it is unacceptable, but for me it is.
The Kollel Bochur (yes that term) got the point.
gavra_at_workParticipantThe entire world is a very narrow bridge.
gavra_at_workParticipant1: Commitment to the Rebbono Shel Olam
2: Flexibility.
3: Ability to be a good spouse.
gavra_at_workParticipantg_a_w:
That’s an appeal to ridicule right there. These are all small issues; a beketshe or a frok, a a shtreimel or a fedora. You don’t change the type of Jew you call yourself for those things.
Anyway my opinion on Zionism is irrelevant since it doesn’t exist anymore.
In fact I’m pretty sure this topic is a deflection from the original which was whether it is correct to send a child who is sitting and learning to the IDF.
1: I’m glad you consider Heter Mechira a “small issue”. I don’t think a typical “Brisker” would.
2: We both agree that someone learning should not be in the IDF. I just think the country needs an “army” (i.e. people with weapons to defend) of some sort, which you agreed to earlier.
B”H, Shalom.
P.S. There are gemaros in the first perek of Bava Basra that actually state (and they are brought down L’halacha in hilchos Tzedaka) that a Talmud Chacham does not need to pay taxes for the city militia, as “Rabbanan Lo Tzrichi N’Tirusa”. This would apply whether the Rabbanan were working or not.
Even if I were a talmud chacham, I would not want to put that to the test.
gavra_at_workParticipantI respect the Tinokos shel Bais Rabban, who are the real supporters of the world.
Only Tinokos shel Bais Rabban will sit and learn when we are building the Bais HaMikdash (B’Karov).
I also respect those mothers (and fathers) who send their children out to learn, and work hard so that they can send their child to yeshiva, and act as role models so that their children will want to be connected to the Rebbono Shel Olam.
In addition, I respect those who make it possible for the Tinokos shel Bais Rabban to learn (both the Rabbaim & the Tomchim).
gavra_at_workParticipantTo defend DHM:
DHM would call the Satmer Rov 98% correct for not taking money from the state, Rav Elyashiv 98% correct because he worked for the Rabbinate of the state, Rav Shlomo Zalman Aurbach 98% correct because he held of Hetter Mechira, etc.
It is just his way of wording things in an extreme manner, but he doesn’t mean to be Mevaze a Gadol B’Yisroel, I’m sure, even if he doesn’t personally hold of his shittos.
gavra_at_workParticipantI just quoted Bava Kamma in the Shira thread.
gavra_at_workParticipantAlthough, halachicly & hashkaficly, it is an interesting question whether it is better to have an army of Torah Yidden vs. an army of those who don’t follow Torah Umitzvos and have additional people learning more hours (lets say eight hrs vs six per day).
gavra_at_workParticipantPredictable yet fascinating to watch how this thread slowly descends to another pro/anti Zionist bout…
When did I say anything pro-zionist?
gavra_at_workParticipantDHM: It was an obvious point (with the word “real” bolded). Since he is of the family, he is a “Brisker”. If you mean the “yeshivos”, then do you include the Kollel? (lol)
I have no agenda here, just that everyone should live and let live (within the realms of Halacha), be factual, and try to learn something in the process.
I actually like having you here. You give a viewpoint that is strictly EY, and back it up, unlike others who insult & degrade. Further, I know we are incompatable, so it doesn’t bother me that we disagree (as I’ve said in other threads).
Getting back to the original point, do you agree EY has to have an army of some type, even if it only consists of Yeshiva Bochrim training during Baim Hazmanim? If not, that shittah is following the Avairah of Yoshiyahu.
However, if you tell me that you may as well have those who do not learn anyway fight, and it will all be decided by the Rebbono Shel Olam anyway, I’m OK with that.
I really didn’t want to bother you further, and don’t feel the need to respond if you don’t want to do so.
gavra_at_workParticipantmikehall12382: my friend has sent his sons to a mainstream yeshiva in ey (same problem as rockmountain), and the mashgiach told them TO MAKE UP a new set of parents to apply for student visas. they did and had no problems from the idf. there is no mitzvah to fall into the trap of serving in the idf.
Fascinating (with the raised eyebrow).
February 1, 2011 6:51 pm at 6:51 pm in reply to: Are you going to watch/listen to the superbowl? #735614gavra_at_workParticipantProbably.
gavra_at_workParticipantDHM:
At least I would consider Dr. Rabbi Moshe Meiselman as “Brisker”, and he says Rav Yoshe Ber is his Rebbe.
Unless only REAL Briskers don’t call Rav Yoshe Ber “the Rav” (which I do not, that is not my Hashkafa either).
As far as being “very organized”, I (and Ittisa) wish I was. 🙂
I just see in you a microcosm of the stereotypical Charaeidi in EY. Not that it is all inclusive (I have “Chareidi” friends in EY who are nothing like this), but this is the PC groupspeak (for lack of a better term) that goes around, enforceable by Shunning.
Not that it is a problem there, either. That is what makes (B’H) all Yidden different, but all with the same goal.
gavra_at_workParticipantI love to Kvetch
And to complain
We’re Gonna have
A hurricane,
Oh just to move,
is such a pain,
So come along and sing along
The Kvetch along song.
(Baruch makes a Simcha)
gavra_at_workParticipantP.S. I have no clue what “Rav Kook’s views” are. All I know is that they put out an awesome version of Ritva & Rashba.
gavra_at_workParticipantDHM: As others will point out (so I will spare them), Rav Yoshe Ber was not someone whom the Gedolim distanced themselves from.
(The examples have been brought in other threads).
E”Y does seem to have this strong separation between Charaedi & not, vs. Chutz (specificly America) we are more concerned with being a Torah Yid, and being more inclusive in that (even from places like Lakewood).
That is part of what I refer to as “Eretz Yisroel Hashkafa”.
gavra_at_workParticipantDr. Hall:
I think he means “krum” as not compatable into his own Hashkafa, just like that of Rav Yoshe Ber, Rav Elyashiv, The Satmer Rov, etc. all have Shittos that are not compatable with other Gedolim’s Hashkafos.
He would probably say the same for Rav Miller & the Satmer Rov, let alone Rav Yoshe Ber, Rav Yaakov & Rav Shlomo Zalman Aurbach.
gavra_at_workParticipantActually for Yidden, the problem is a white cat. Black cats are not a problem (unless its mother was a white cat).

Bava Kamma 80a.
gavra_at_workParticipantOh, I was using Feif Un’s example of reading secular books with parent’s permission when the yeshivah doesn’t allow it.
I don’t think that is as extreme of an example as TV/no TV, which has become a litmus test of “frumkeit”.
Although in EY (especially Charadei community in the WB) it would be, just like “playing sports” would be as well.
gavra_at_workParticipantg_a_w:
I think it would be a better idea to send your child to a yeshivah whose hashkafos you follow. It is very hard for a child to understand when a Rebbe is teaching fire and brimstone against TV and the child’s parents say ‘its ok to watch”. Otherwise I think you will just be undermining the yeshivah’s credibility in the child’s eyes.
Of course. But no Yeshiva is perfect, and children should know the truth. Your example is too extreme. I’m talking about (for example) explaining why our Minhag is to (or not to) say “Afilu Sha’a Echas” in Asher Yatzar and the like.
gavra_at_workParticipantTos. in Gittin (8a) also talks about R’ Peter, a nice Jewish name.
gavra_at_workParticipantMy post (correctly) got blocked, but I’ll try to add this:
Every person is different, and therefore every person has different reasons why they go on or off.
And one must remember, sending your child to a yeshiva does not abrogate your own responsibility to teach your child. If the yeshiva does or says something wrong, tell your child so, and don’t be fickle (but be understanding and perhaps explain what the yeshiva believes. Make it a springboard for conversation & questions. Questions that are accepted & responded to are the best cure (IMHO)) (as I have had to do on occasion).
gavra_at_workParticipantOh well, I had something interesting & informative to post which could have gotten you all many mitzvos, but I can’t post here.
I’m not perfect. 🙁
gavra_at_workParticipantWhenever we are engaged in anything that is not Torah – even if it is another mitzvah we are not doing the ideal. It might be what Hashem wants from us, but that is from His perspective.
What in the world does that mean? One should learn even if that is not what Hashem wants?
Sorry, not my religion.
Besides, every Jewish nation, from Moshe Rabbainu on, had soldiers. Perhaps they were not a “standing army”, and more like “reserves”, but they did fight when required. And they were “drafted” when needed to fight. (see many times in Tanach with David Hamelech, Devorah, etc.)
You completely missed my point, BTW. You assume you are righteous enough that you don’t need a physical army. You, as others before you, (i.e. Yoshiyahu Hamelech) are incorrect. Don’t feel bad, those greater than you have made this mistake.
I know we will disagree on this one (due to our different Hashkafos, as we have gone through before), so I will not bother you further.
gavra_at_workParticipantDH:
Please do. The best of both worlds is the soldier-citizen army.
The current approximation of that is the Nachal Chareidi and Hesder. I wish every soldier was one. (and we agree on the current Tzahal’s issues for a Torah Jew).
gavra_at_workParticipantrb1108 = Joseph?
I suspect anyone who claims everyone must listen to anything that someone claims is from R’ Chaim, particularly when others disagree.
More like someone who didn’t bother reading the previous pages of posts
gavra_at_workParticipantI thought Seminaries don’t give scholarships?
Anyway, if you really want to spend the year in Israel & can’t afford it, consider either Sherut or College & go on loans.
Good luck.
gavra_at_workParticipantI for one am not worried about what would happen if no one is drafted.
That’s what Yoshiyahu said.
gavra_at_workParticipantMy Children.
gavra_at_workParticipantLBK:
RSZA was a very different type of Gadol than R’ Chaim.
You can’t bring proof from what he said to what R’ Chaim would say.
gavra_at_workParticipantBrooklyn Yenta

hey!!! i take personal offense at that!
With your offense and my ears, its a perfect match!
(Paraphrasing The Yenta).
gavra_at_workParticipantIt should be as long as it lasts.
Whatever that might be.
Part of the problem is that the dating world is so standardized; just let what happens happen & enjoy yourself!
gavra_at_workParticipantFrom what I understand it was the correct answer for final jeopardy recently 🙂
gavra_at_workParticipantyunger mann, sure you aren’t Joseph?
I assume modern names exclude the likes of Nimrod, Lot & Avimelech, and include (which would be assur) Yenta, Henoch & Shneur?
I am all for removing Yenta as a name. Just has a bad connotation.
gavra_at_workParticipantMazel Tov.
