Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) does not seem to have scales when one looks at a sample. Some say that it has scales that are embedded to such an extent that it is impossible to remove them without making a hole. Others say that it has kosher scales on parts of its body which fall off during its development. Still others claim that it may have some kosher scales even at the time of harvest.

The Orthodox Union traditionally treats swordfish as non-kosher. (See Sh’ailos and Teshuvos Tzitz Eliezer 9:40 who discusses a statement made by the Knesses HaGedolah about “cherev hadag” and explains why we cannot use the statement to permit swordfish.)

If R’ Schechter as you assert says it is kosher why then does the OU treat it as non kosher?

I don’t have first hand knowledge but farmers grew their own crops and fed their livestock from that. Weather (drought or very heavy rains) had more to do with the price of feed than geopolitical concerns.

Once again minhagim shonim. My family did not and does not split meals. it was either milchigs or fleishigs. However, the RAMAH states 494:3 OICHLIM MAACHAL CHALAV VACHAR KACH MAACHAL BASAR UZTRICHIM LHAVI EMAHEM BEIS LECHEM AHL HASHULCHAN. I once heard from a rav in my community that the minhag in Hungary was that the night meals were milchigs and the day meals fleishigs but I know people of hungarian descent who are not noheig that way.

    http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=49627&st=&pgnum=203

NOTICE THE RAMAH SAYS CHALAV not gevina.
I dont know anyone who holds milk to be chamar medina.

why would pizza not be “yom tov’dik”? what about baked ziti, lasagne eggplant? my family has enjoyed all of these on shavuous along with blintzes and cheesecake.

i dont see the humor……I look around shul at all the people sleeping who stayed up at night and understand those who go to sleep for 3 or 4 hours. I don’t know about you but I dont recall alos being the time that one can daven l’chatchila. Was Maamad Har Sinai at Alos or Haneitz?

No, we get turned off by those with “holier then thou” attitudes. Yes yoiu quoted a source (one that I have used) It is not out of “ignorance” but states outright Vachshav Lo Nahagim Kein. While there are those who do stay up both nights dont call it “wimping out” to be meikil when Rov yidden don’t have this minhag.

Joseph – Friday night averages between 90 minutes to 2 hours. Daytime averages slightly less as we have one less course.

RG: there is a story in one of R’ Paysach Krohn’s books about two talmidei chachmim, one who sang more with his children while the second sang less with more divrei torah. the children of the first talmid chacham stayed close to their roots while the other one’s chidren strayed and they asked him why the first was more successful in raising his children and the second responded because he sang more with his children.

We dont say it on shabbos since we want to count them as part of our 100 brochos (Mishna Berurah 46:14)
and when you are being yotzer with someone elses brocha you dont say BHUBS.

While R’ Chaim may be recognized as the Gadol Hador I am not sure if he has the title of Poseik Hador as R’ Moshe Feinstein was recognized as such or R’ Shlomo Zalman or R’ Eliyashiv.

Once again RG you turn off those who you are trying to convince by your “wimping out to be meikel” comment. This yesh omrim has not been followed for who knows how long although my shul does have a learning seder on the second night but not for the entire night.

From Rabbi Chaim Fogelman as printed in the OK’s Kosher Spirit magazine (spring 2017)

We don’t find any other Yom Tov which has a special name denoting the last day – there’s no Acharon shel Sukkos or Acharon shel Shavuos.

The prophet Yirmiyahu says, “Therefore, behold, days are coming, says the L-rd, when it will no longer be said, As the L-rd lives who brought Israel up from the land of Egypt.” (Yirmiyahu 16:14)

We call the final day of Pesach “acharon” (the last) because we demonstrate our faith that this Pesach will be the last Pesach in exile. When Moshiach comes, we won’t celebrate Pesach as we do now, which is why we refer specifically to the last day as the Final Day of Pesach.

The Shul will not allow presachdigeh urns just to boil water for instant coffee? You might be able to find cut fruit packaged for pesach. The rest sounds correct. Flaums has prepackaged tuna and egg salad KFP, I think there are also packaged whitefish salads and herring. The only other option might be a fleishigs option. I think Glatt Mart’s take out was made pesachdig. Mazel Tov Yhi ROTZON SHEHYIGADLO LTORAH ULCHUPAH ULMAASIM TOVIM VYACHNISO LIVRISO SHEL AVRAHOM AVINU BITO UBIZMANO.
