    Golfer:

It’s a complex issue. First, what does it mean that Alexander saw the Earth as a ball? When you look out the window of an airplane do you see a ball? My impression is that in order to see the spherical shape of the world you would have to be well outside the atmosphere. The problem is that if you go too far away, it will appear two dimensional (such as when you look at the moon) so you still won’t be able to see a sphere. So I’m not really sure how Alexander could have seen the world as a ball. (Any scientists around here can feel free to correct what I just said, if it’s wrong.)

Now the way Sam2 explained the Yerushalmi, I can at least understand what Alexander saw – it would be like a hump coming out of the water.

    However, I am not convinced of Sam’s pshat. The parallel of the Yerushalmi in the Bavli (Avodah Zarah 41a), says ???”? ???? ?????? ???’: ??? ????? ?? ???? ??? ?? ????? ???? ????: ???? ????? ?? ???? ??? ?? ????? ???? ?????: ???? ????? ?? ???? ??? ?? ????? ???? ?????

    Tosafos there (s.v. k’kadur) says

    ?????? ???? ?????? ???????? ?????????? ?????? ??? ????? ?? ???? ?? ????? ????? ??? ??? ????? ??’ ?? ??????? ????? ?? ?? ?????

    The Yaavetz, commenting on Tosafos, says ???? ???? ????? ?????? ??? ???? ????? ???? ????? ??? which I think he is discussing a round Earth vs. a flat Earth.

It happens to be that there are various statements of Chazal which can perhaps be taken either way. I would say the best assumption is that Chazal themselves did not have a definitive position on the matter. In support of this contention, see the commentary to Sefer Yetzira by R’ Yehuda Ben Barzilai of Barcelona where he says ????”? ??????? ???? ??? ???? ??? ??? ?? ???? ?????? ???? and he (quoting R’ Saadia Gaon) seems to basically say that the Chachamim were divided on this matter. (You can see the whole context at http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=21827&st=&pgnum=284 although don’t ask me to explain what’s going on because I don’t really know.)

Regarding Sam’s point about how this relates to Eretz Yisrael being the highest point, see the Maharsha in Kiddushin 69a (where the Gemara says this idea) who says

    ???”? ???? ??? ?”? ??”? ??? ???’. ?????? ??? ????? ????? ???”? ??? ???? ???? ??? ?”? ???? ???? ??”? ???? ???? ???? ?????? ????? ???? ?????? ????? ???? ????? ??”? ??? ?? ????? ????? ???? ???????

and the Sefer Hamakneh there who says

“Do you answer questions, too, or just ask them?”

What’s that supposed to mean? I answered the question in two separate ways:

    1) By asking a question and whatever the answer to my question would be, you could apply it to your question.

    2) By showing precedent for the idea of allowing websites if there is no actual link in the text.

    Avram:

It’s not loftier in the sense that either way you are really doing it for your own benefit. It would seem odd that the whole point of the mishnah is just to tell you not to serve Hashem for personal benefit ABC, but to serve him for personal benefit XYZ (even if you think that XYZ is more mature).

As for your second paragraph, you are still saying that you’re doing it for your own benefit. You just don’t know what the benefit is.

I was thinking that maybe quoting your father in writing is different from verbally quoting him and therefore this halacha wouldn’t apply in the Gemara in Bava Kamma where Rabba Bar Rav Huna quoted his father in writing. However, it wouldn’t explain what R’ Yaakov Emden was attempting to do.

Shuv Matzasi that the Darchei Moshe (Yoreh Deiah 240) quotes the Shiltei Giborim quoting the Riaz:

    ????? ??”? ?????? ??? ??? ???????? (???? ??????? ??. ??? ?) ?? ????? ???? ????? ???? ????? ???? ????? ??? ???? ?? ??? ???????? ???? ??? ???????? ??????? ????? ??? ?”? ???? ???? ???”? ???? ?????? ????? ????? ??? ??”? ??”? ???? ??? ????? ????? ??????? ????? ?????? ???? ???? ????? ??? ??? ??? ???? ????? ??? ??”? ?”? ???? ???? ????

which would lend credence to my answer, namely that Rav Huna didn’t write ????? ???? ????? because the writing might still be around after 12 months when ????? ???? ????? is not appropriate. However, the Riaz clearly says that you would still write ???”? which Rav Huna didn’t do, and the Rema here and in Shulchan Aruch, rejects this shita.

The Shach says that even within 12 months you can just say ?”?, the point being that after 12 months you can’t say ????? ???? ?????. But again, this wouldn’t explain why Rav Huna didn’t even say ?”?.

So I listened to it again to see if I could clarify what he said about the Ralbag. It’s pretty hard to make out what he’s saying. After he says that Moreh Nevuchim is good he says “but the _____’s seforim _____ the Ralbag is not so good”. The first blank sounded like he was saying Rasag, Rashag, Rashal, or Ralbag. Presumably he was referring to R’ Saadia Gaon or the Ralbag. If the first blank was “Ralbag” then it seems that he was talking about all his seforim, not just Milchamos Hashem. If the first blank was something else, then he might have only been referring to Milchamos Hashem when he mentioned the Ralbag. The second blank might have been “like” or “but”, which I’m not sure how would fit in the sentence, or it might have been something else entirely – it’s hard to distinguish.

And I also noticed that he also said that Nefesh Hachaim and Kuzari are good as well.

    Haleivi, DaasYochid, Avram, et al:

There are two different issues under discussion here, depending on how you explain the purpose of ??? ?? ??? ???? ???. It seemed that there was some sort of consensus that there is a “relational reward” to use Avram’s terminology. My question on that is that it makes it that ??? ?? ??? ???? ??? is not in fact loftier than ?? ??? ???? ???; it’s just a different form of reward that you’re seeking.

The other way of explaining it is that (even if) there is absolutely nothing to be gained, there is an intrinsic value in doing Hashem’s will. To that I asked why.

Now as per Haleivi, the second one is not a theological issue but a philosophical issue, considering that you can ask the question in regards to anything, not just in regards to service of Hashem. The first one though, is purely a theological question because it is only relevant to service of Hashem.

    Oomis:

I think you are proving my point. Everything you just described has you gaining some benefit from loving someone, be it a tangible benefit, or simply feeling good about yourself. If loving someone would not cause you to have any good feeling, and you literally got no benefit in any way shape or form, would you still love people? If not then one could argue that love itself is selfish i.e. for your own pleasure.

Patur, if you see a boy drowning you will jump in and save him. (Right?) Will you be doing that because of fame, money or exercise? Will you have any motive in mind other than that it just simply has to be done?

I would save him. But that doesn’t explain why it has to be done.

When you arrange things for someone you love, while assuming they will never become aware of what you’ve done, what is your motivation?

Would you love someone if you got absolutely nothing out of the relationship.

It seems that the answer to everything is that intellectually speaking it doesn’t make sense, but you just feel it (which I’ll admit, I do). But that means that if someone doesn’t feel it, or if he has other feelings drawing him in the opposite direction, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that. Except for that he doesn’t have the proper feeling. But why is there something wrong with not having the proper feeling.

I’ll wash the dishes so that my wife can have a stress free evening: ??? ?? ??? ???? ???

Why do you want your wife to have a stress free evening?

The only way to not have a relational reward would be to not have the Torah – at which point we wouldn’t even know how to serve Hashem anyway and would render the question moot.

    Hypothetically.

    Avram:

My question is twofold. It seems from the statement of Antignos Ish Socho that ??? ?? ??? ???? ??? is more idealistic (that’s not a good word to convey what I mean but I can’t think of a better one right now) than ?? ??? ???? ???, and that there is some inherent value in serving Hashem this way. Now, does a person get any personal benefit from ??? ?? ??? ???? ???? You are alleging that he/she does, albeit a different form (relational vs. non-relational). To that I ask that if you are serving Hashem ??? ?? ??? ???? ??? in order to get the “reward” of the relationship than that is no less self-centered/selfish than doing it ?? ??? ???? ???, and if you are doing it purely for Hashem’s sake, then why are you doing it? Why do you care what Hashem wants?

To illustrate, Rabbeinu Yonah writes: ?????? ?? ??? ??? ??? ?? ??? i.e. even if there was no reward you should still serve Hashem – out of love. What if there was no relational reward either? Would you still serve Hashem?

It actually doesn’t really make sense to pasken a machlokes Amoraim based on sinai adif. Just because he knows more Tannaic statementswe should pasken like him? If he knows a relevant Mishnah/Braisa/Tosefta let him bring a Ta Shema and if his opponent has no answer then the case is closed. But if the Sinai has no raya there shouldn’t be any reason to pasken like him.

I think it’s more clear in this quote:

“In his addresses to the American Mizrachi Association, which were subsequently transcribed as the Chamesh Derashot, the Rav explained the first aspect of this change of heart. The Rav noted that in the realm of halachah, the rabbinic majority reigns supreme. G-d gave the Torah to man and our capacity for halachic creativity and decision-making is axiomatic to a live and vibrant relationship to G-d. In hashkafah however, the rules are different. For questions that are outside

soften the blow of exile. The Rav explained that the Mizrachi of 1902 represented Yosef Hatzadik and Agudah represented the other brothers. Mizrachi wanted to reevaluate Jewish life in Europe, to prepare for the Jewish future and ensure Jewish continuity, whereas Agudah were content with the status quo. Mizrachi fought and dreamed, and without them there would have been no place for refugees to go to following the war. Without the yishuv, Hitler would have killed Judaism. The Rav saw this as a full retroactive justification of Mizrachi philosophy.”

“In a talk he gave to the annual conference of the American Mizrachi-Hapoel Hamizrachi in the mid-1950s, the Rav explained why he had abandoned the Agudath Israel outlook and espoused that of the Mizrachi. Later published under the title “And Jseph Dreamt a Dream,” Rabbi Soloveitchik equated the Mizrachi viewpoint with the actions of the biblical Joseph and the Agudath Israel with Joseph’d brothers. Joseph sought to prepare his brethren for the new life they would encounter in Egypt, The brothers did not understand Joseph, because they looked upon the future as a continuation of the present. They understood their problems within the framework of their life in Canaan, the land of their father’s wanderings. Similarly, the Mizrachi was concerned with building the future of Torah in the Land of Israel, whereas Agudath Israel was primarily focused upon the continuity of Jewish Life in its current Eastern European Centers. The Holocaust convinced the Rav that the Mizrachi position was correct.”

    Jewishness:

From what I understand, R’ Soloveitchik said that the machlokes between the Agudah and Mizrachi was a parallel to the machlokes between Yosef and the Brothers, and in these types of issues Hashem paskens and He paskened like Yosef and He paskened like Mizrachi.

I wasn’t bringing a proof to anything; I was just saying that R’ Soloveitchik’s proof is not a proof. I don’t think the Satan argument is that the Satan went against Hashem. I think it’s just a way of saying that just because Hashem caused/allowed a certain thing to happen doesn’t make it right.

I realize my post was not clear. I wasn’t saying that R’ Soloveitchik was more of a posek than a Chasidish Rebbe is a posek. I was saying that if R’ Soloveitchik had to be labeled as either a posek or a Chasidish Rebbe, he would be a posek. I was responding to Jewishness by showing that there was no proof brought from a Chasidish Rebbe since R’ Soloveitchik was not a Chasidish Rebbe.

Lichora the Bach was bothered by Tosafos’s saying …??? ???? ????, because the same way that there were tzadikim who didn’t have sons, there were tzadikim who didn’t have daughters which is not something that Tosafos can deny,in which case Tosafos is not making too much sense. Therefore there must have been some missing words, so the Bach brought in Yehoshua. It’s just that if my suggestion from five months ago is correct then he should have said “And so too, Yehoshua had no sons as a punishment ” And also, my suggestion doesn’t really help because even if Yehoshua had daughters, his lack of sons was still not yissurin shel ahavah. Also, there’s a much more basic Kashya on

    The Little I Know:

I wasn’t talking about this situation or about what the seforim say. I was addressing a general statement which you made, namely “we learned in high school science class, that rewards or punishments that are not nearly immediate to the behavior have no effect on modifying it.” The fact is that the reward/punishment does not need to be immediate (although it definitely can be more effective especially when first programming the behavior). That is the concept of reinforcement schedules. If your high school science class did not teach that then it was lacking something. Though you definitely one-upped me in the “meeting Skinner department”.

    I can’t because I also didn’t get it.

I tried to outsmart the Moderators by posting it on my profile page but all the Hebrew letters just converted into question marks.

So I was listening to a recording of R’ Ruderman discussing seforim to learn for mussar/machshava (which he seemed to say are the same thing) and he said that Maharal is good, Moreh Nevuchim is good but you have to understand it, and he said that the Ralbag is not good. It’s possible that he meant only that Milchamos Hashem is not good, but that his Tanach commentaries are ok.

I sometimes put meat in kugel and I don’t recall it sinking to the bottom. But maybe that’s just me.

PAA: A capital offense is far more severe than an abomination.

It may have a more severe punishment. But ga’ava is more abominable than homosexuality.

PAA: Mishkav zochor unlike ga’avah is a capital offense and as such obviously far more severe.

But it’s less of an abomination.

Don’t like Fruedian Psychology? Is that you proje ting your feelings on me, or are you, perhaps transferring your feelings onto me? Or maybe it is some passive agressive way of makong me undelete your post. So tell me, how long have you had this problem?

Or perhaps you are rationalizing your behavior or perhaps you are in denial about your deletion habits, or perhaps Mod 100 threw rotten tomatoes at you last night so you are displacing your frustration on me, or perhaps by accusing me of using Freudian Defense Mechanisms you are regressing to a stage where ad hominem attacks are better than logical arguments.

    I’m joking, relax.
