unless you assume that the “system” gains and loses at the same rates for boys and girls–which is very much not clear.

There would have to be a significant difference to balance out the natural numbers.

And the anecdotal evidence could have myriads of other reasons, as I and others have expounded on this forum.

They could make it worse, but it wouldn’t lessen the need to close the gap one iota.

Look, bima klop or aguda convention speech, the roshei yeshiva are not lining up behind him on this.

I think I gave some very good reasons. Also, they certainly haven’t spoken against him; I would think they could have convinced him not to take this public.

Well then, anywhere within the techum of Brooklyn would be OK.

I need more than a sevara before making a change like this.

It is more than a sevara, and the numbers are clear, even taking into account that there are more boys than girls born (which I grant is true). and that’s without the strong anecdotal evidence if more girls around than boys.

There’s actually a much simpler reason for the lack of bima klops, and why RSYR didn’t wait for them: we’re not ready for them yet.

We agree to two potential downsides: loss of learning, and boys’ immaturity.

As far as loss of learning, RSYR suggested changes in the yeshiva system to prevent this. Well, this hasn’t happened yet, but he’s trying to get the public, as well as the RY, behind it, and he will need both.

As far as maturity, if we assume that inherently, boys are mature enough at a younger age Chazal and Chassidim would seem to support this), that doesn’t mean you can take a 21 year old bochur who thinks he’s getting married in at least a year and a half and stick him under the chuppah.

Part if the maturity process is the mental preparation, which needs time. We’re just not there yet on a wide scale.

Popa, I don’t need hard data. I have no doubt that there’s a growing population and an age gap (typically).

I do agree, as I’ve posted, that there’s a downside. There’s also an upside: kedusha. This is in Chaza”l, and the Chazon Ish held it applied in his day, and R’ Chaim holds it applies today, so I don’t easily dismiss it.

Also, I wouldn’t necessarily expect a bima klop, because then you’d get bochurim who aren’t ready yet (l’shitaseinu) starting to go out. Maybe RY are already privately encouraging guys to start earlier.

Popa, until the system allows for it to be considered normal, it might not be in a bochur’s best interest, so until then, it would make sense for there not to be a klop. More importantly, will RSYR be able to make it normal? If so, let’s see if there are some bima klops.

    Lior,

    1) a. sholom bayis b. decreased years of learning

    2) see 1)

I’m not taking sides in upside vs. downside, but I can certainly see why some RY might not be so enthusiastic.

I don’t think you can make a t’nai on rosh hashanah, because it’t kedusha arichta.

    Correct.

Also, you only make it if you’re planning to cook, not for ‘hachana’.

It’s still required, but you would not say a brochoh unless you’re planning to cook.

No, the opposite, to show that one thing being permitted does not necessarily imply another.

I do think privately sharing a recipe is okay, but what if I shared every recipe in the book? I think this damages the author/publisher, and is protected. Is it okay to copy a recipe word for word and post it on the cr?

There’s gray area; it’s hard to know where to precisely draw the line.

I hold that you are not allowed to even quote halachos someone else says unless each person buys the book.

Also, you’re not allowed to sing someone a niggun from a new CD you just bought.

??? ???? ???? means a pleasant countenance, with which the mishsnah in Avos says we should greet everyone.

    ??? ???? ???? refers to a pirush on Chumash written by the ba’al Hafla’ah.

(I have no idea what ??? ???? ???? means, unless it’s supposed to be a “shyn”, in which case maybe it means he’s a poor person with a broken countenance and the homeowner is supposed to cheer him up).

If the agency’s reliability varies by product, I’d consider them generally not reliable, unless the problematic cases are because of a specific kula that they rely on.

Yes, but it may also depend on what you rely on them for.

For example, I may rely on a particular hechsher for michig, but not fleishig. I might not be comfortable with a particular hechsher for cheese production, but use a candy with their symbol. I may use a hechsher for packaged goods, but not food service (restaurant/catering). I may not accept what they say about other agencies, or assumptions they make about what does not require hechsher.

It takes some research to make some of these distinctions, so some take an all or nothing approach.

“do you think I can buy a Susie Fishbein book and then share every recipe with you?”

Would you object to loaning a Fishbein book to someone? If not, on what halachic basis do you differentiate loaning the entire book with the scenario you are seemingly objecting to?

On the same basis that distinguishes between lending a CD (muttar) and copying it or sending links to files (assur).

I doubt halacha has a parallel to patent, since patent cannot exist without a centralized registry, since it gives rights to the person who invented even where another independently invents.

It might exist in a a different form, where you can independently create, just not copy.

You can’t put egg on your challah and then claim that nobody else is allowed to unless they pay you a fee.

No, but recipes are more unique than that.

It is hard to imagine you can publish directions of how to do your patent in a book and then claim only those who buy the book may put egg on their challah.

It’s a little easier to imagine, if you factor in precise measurements, ratios, rising time, baking time, etc. You may be right, though, there may be an umdina that individual recipes will be shared. But haga atzmicha, do you think I can buy a Susie Fishbein book and then share every recipe with you?
