No one has provided a halachic basis for prohibiting it. If some families want to follow a minhag that the wives and daughters rely upon the husband/father for lighting, certainly nothing prohibits that but don’t suggest there is any reason to deny women the right to light candles if that is their preference.

the Sulchan Aruch (written about 460 years after Rashi’s death).

שולחן ערוך אורח חיים הלכות חנוכה סימן תרעה סעיף ג

אשה מדלקת נר חנוכה, שאף היא חייבת בה

A women should light Chanunka lecht because the neis Chanukah was for them as well. While some try to assert that a married-woman is yotzeh from her husband lighting the candles and should simply forego working while he does so, ignorance abounds on a number of issues .

So there you have it. Women should light…because they should light. We need no more of a reason than that.

I guess we have fundamentally .different views on what/who constitutes an “ohev yisroel”…perhaps it contemplates someone who is “soneh everyone else”….some of .the right wing evangelical Christians are also “ohevei yisroel”, at least as long as we are necessary to assure their nuclear Armageddon

This thread started as liberal versus conservative but as would be expected, became Red versus Blue as a surrogate like everything else in the country today.

For someone who has not exercised on a regular basis ANY cardio activity for 20 minutes or longer several times a week is a good start. Work up from there to activities that will raise your heart level to 80 percent of max for your age but if that’s not feasible, just keep walking (go up and down the stairs at work). Add some weight and resistance training if you can…use isometrics if not.

After hearing the seemingly endless stream of vile comments from this pedophile and racist, including blatantly anti-Semitic blood libels against Jews who don’t accept his ‘savior”, I would have expected the originator of this thread to crawl into a hole and disappear for a while. No such good fortune but at least the people of Alabama seem to agree that there is a point where you say enough is enough. I’m not expecting Alabama to become a blue state nor am I confident they can hold on to this Senate seat in the next election when a mainstream Republican is the candidate but at least for a moment in time, they followed the admonition of the great political philosopher (and basketball player), Alabama native Charles Barkley…”common Alabama, we’ve got to show the world we’re not a bunch of idiots”.

    To Winnie:
You frame a very important question. What does it mean to be “gadol hador” versus the “leader of our generation” (as per the title of this thread)? Do they mean the same thing or does one imply someone regarded as the biggest talmid chacham versus someone who has both the lamdus but also has experience and skills in administering mosdos, providing definitive guidance on controversial matters of halacha etc. We already have “Chief Rabbis” who are more in the nature of political appointees for the Sephardeshe and Ashkenaz tzibur but not all regard them as “the leaders of our generation” or consider them among the “gadolei hador”.

Does the Sephardeshe tzibur recognize Rav Chaim as their “leader” as compared to Rav Yosef? Clearly they respect Rav Chaim’s lamdus just as Maran Ovadia Z’TL held Rav Elyashiv Z’TL in great esteem. I guess the question could be framed in terms of whether both the Litvish and Sephardic tzibur hold by the same “gadol hador”.

There are so many aspects of the “dating” game that are not subject to yes/no guidelines but are more likely to be a function of the hashkafhah of the young man and young woman involved as well as their families. In more heimish settings, the parents obviously take a more central role in both the shadchanus and logistical arrangements for dating etc. and much is done under their supervision. Among MO, there is very limited parental involvement and the principals set their own meeting arrangements, although still with deference to norms regarding tzinius, negiah etc. MO are much less likely to ask a Rav about when/how/who to date and the protocols related thereto. There is no right/wrong. If you regularly consult your LRP for such matters, this would not be any different. Obviously, a walk in central park is a lot different than a walk in a country road out in the boondocks…

The key benefit of the “walk” versus the “sit and stare” is that it takes the couple away from prying eyes and allows for a more natural and spontaneous interaction. Its less stressful to walk for a few minutes quietly without have to fill the space with chatter and just enjoy the view, the people passing by etc…its silence across a table can be deafening . Most importantly, it puts the couple more at ease and allows them to engage with one another without as much pressure.

I assume you are referring to a walk on a public street, in a park with people around etc. Why would this be any different than sitting in a bar or restaurant?? Some individuals would be more comfortable having the ability to walk and talk a first date rather than being forced to sit across the table or in on some bar stools in a noisy area trying to engage in small talk. Even for the chumrah fanatics, there is no issur on waking on a public street assuming there is no negiah or other inappropriate “body language”.

There are even some designs that are substantially different from those designed for bullet and IED shrapnel protection best suited for knife attacks. some security guards where them but not all. Its the essence of emunah on any issue….we only know that we will never know the “why” of what the Ebeshter does or chooses not to do. We can tie ourselves in knots and engage in all sorts of speculation as often happens here among the resident neviim here on YWN who claim an ability to explain to explain every tragedy and link it to tzinius, toevah marriage, taharas hamishpacha or whatever. Or else, we simply yield to the reality that hashem does what he does and we go on with our lives expecting the good the ultimately prevail for ourselves and klal yisroel.

All this historical debate and revisionist history (in the eyes of some) leaves us where we are today. EY is a reality and Yarushalayim is the political capital of EY (whether some here really accept it or not). To suddenly revert back to a Satmar/NK perspective is not going to happen and even the Satmar themselves don’t believe it, although it does make for a good “asifah” to denounce the Trump decision. For those millions of yidden in EY who get up in the AM, get their kids to school safely and then try to get themselves to work and then reverse the process later the day while living a “normal” life, all these debates are moronic. It is all about what exists today on the ground, and the shita of some rav 70 years ago about the eveils of Zionism, is about the least relevant factor in their lives. That train left the station in 1948 and it ain’t coming back. If the Satmar want to build a new KJ outside Entebe in Uganda, I’ll make the fist contribution to the building fund and contribute frequent flyer miles so both the brothers can fly over in style.

As a practical matter, why would yidden care about whether two goyim choose to “marry” however that term is defined under the civil laws of any country. If their belief system contemplates a set of legal requirements similiar or different from kiddushin under halacha, what is it our business? Perahaps after z’man moishiach the sheva mitzvos bnai noach becomes more relevant but until then, what is the enforcement mechanism??

There is considerable fraud among the growing number of so called “shalichim” purporting to represent all sorts of worthy mosdos (most of which we’ve never heard of or with generic names that sound similar to legitimate mosdos). Many arrive from EY with letters in laminated plastic in their hands claiming to have the endorsement from chashuve rabbonim , including some of the organizations established in willy, BP and Lakewood set up for the specific purpose of screening the frauds from the legitimate. Bottom line is that you roll the dice with these guys (I’ve never head a woman coming to schneur). We’ve generally adopted a policy of asking them for the website of the various mosdos and telling them we will donate directly online once we can verify the legitimacy of the site. We absolutely will not give a dime to someone claiming to be collecting on behalf of some individual or family that has encountered a tragedy unless we personally know the rav who has endorsed their funding effort. The many legitimate online sites (such as those advertising here on YWN) provide sufficient opportunity if you want to support those who have such needs. If you are fortunate enough to not have to worry about giving away money to fraudsters and scammers, than obviously feel free to do so.

The right wing evangelicals who also “love” yidden do so out of their biblical view that we all need to die in some Armageddon, so their moishiach can return (and not riding down Eastern Parkway waving a yellow flag).

“Are you saying that women who live in places without an eiruv don’t live a normal life? ”

No…I’m saying that those who do have the benefit of an eruv (an obviously those who hold by eruvim) are able to enjoy menuchas Shabbos with their children and families, come to shul with the little ones, etc, go out for a walk Shabbos afternoon and visit friends/family). Those who hold by eruvim but live in areas that do not yet have an eruv (or where its not practical) cannot engage in what most consider “normal’ activities that are consistent with Shabbos. You make a good point regarding the threshold issue of whether those who move to Lakewood deliberately want to escape the “normal” of an MO neighborhood. However, I know many families in Lakewood and do not believe the anti-eruv shita is as pervasive and universal as some here would suggest.

Joseph Says: “The Shulchan Aruch and Rambam pasken l’halacha that women shouldn’t be out of the home much”

The usual nareshnkeit from our resident msycoginst troll .

“Kinder, Küche, Kirche” or the 3 Ks, is the 19th century German slogan translated as “children, kitchen, church”. It shares the derogatory connotation extracted out of context by Joseph describing what is obviously meant to be an antiquated female role model in contemporary Western society from the Mullahs of Iran and Riyadh. The phrase is vaguely equivalent to the medieval English “barefoot and pregnant” or the Victorian ode:

“Take hold of kettle, broom and pan,
Then you’ll surely get a man!
    Shop and office leave alone,
Your true life work lies at home.”

Sadly, and most ominously, is the worldview of the Nazi philosopher, Y’S, who wrote:
“The mission of women is to bring children into the world. This is not at all as………unmodern as it sounds. The female bird pretties herself for her mate and hatches eggs for him. In exchange, the male takes care of gathering food, and stands guard and wards off the enemy.”

The point with respect to an eruv is simple….even if you want to call it a kulah or don’t hold by eruvim, there are enough younger bnos yisorel who do accept them and it is crucial for their ability to get out of the house on Shabbos with the kids and live a normal life. As noted earlier, if you don’t like eruvim, stay home but don’t impose your hashkafah (or R’ Kotler’s ) on others.

“This is a unique issue relating to Route 9, which transverses most of the eastern seaboard of the US.”

The “Route 9 shita” is well known, at least among the eruv cognoscenti. However the more fundamental question is still whether there would ever be a rational basis for any segment of the tzibur to publicly oppose efforts by another to build an eruv that meets their needs and is consistent with the views of their Rav. In simple terms, no one would be forcing anyone else to rely upon the eruv and thus opposing efforts by other yidden to build one would itself be assur.

The BMG crowd may not “want” an eruv because Rabbi Kotler et. al. were against it but in general, if there are those who want to build one using public utility poles etc, it can be done. It would be a real chilul hashem for some yidden in Lakewood to intervene with public authorities against an eruv when yidden in other towns have been the target of anti-Semitic opposition to their efforts to place an eruv on utility poles and lampposts.

The Ministry noted, “The chareidi lifestyle focuses on the dinner table… At the same time, they don’t engage in any physical exercise.” Other factors cited inluded inter alia, “the absence of nutritional and practical health education in chareidi schools and the much higher rates of poverty of many within this community, which leads to consumption of cheaper, simple carbohydrate-based foods (such as potatoes, pasta, rice, and sugar) combined with high sodium foods and high-fat meat, rather than more expensive complex carbohydrates and protein-rich foods….”

My understanding is that the general ranking to daven for the amud when their are competing requests among “members” of the shul i as follows:

    1.Person within Shiva
    2.Person having Yartzeit
    3.Person within Shloshim
    4.Person within year of Aveilus
This presumes the competing parties both are saying kaddish for a parent (mother or father). I have heard mentioned, but have not seen a source, that for two otherwise equally ranked persons seeking to daven, a shiva or yahrtzeit for a parent takes priority over that for a sibling or child.

I suspect that whenever the minhag of serving meat evolved, the state of knowledge regarding nutrition and the adverse health effects of most meat were unknown. If the underlying notion is hudur mitzvah and serving meat at one time was considered a sign of respect, etc. the times have changed. The cost/lb of fresh fish (not the bottom feeders served in various forms as “gefilte” fish and larded with lots of sugar) is considerably higher than most meats and nutritionally an order of magnitude better. The majority of yidden today (especially the younger generation) would much prefer a sincha with lots of fresh fish and salads (and perhaps chicken) rather than the traditional red meats, salty and fatty fish, starchy kugels etc.

Perhaps silence equals tacit agreement but at what cost? Silence can also reflect a strategy of keeping a low profile on controversial issues for fear of making yourself (and by implication your mosdos) the targets of the same violence and disruption. Finally, silence may reflect the absence of real-time awareness of ongoing events for reasons that seem hard to understand.

There are multiple ways in which ostensibly anti-tzionist, anti-medinah elements of the chareidi tzibur can rationalize acceptance of certain government payment streams or services. Its not hypocreicy, its pragmatism. One can follow a principled position to the extent practical in contemporary society but make concessions where necessary. As Joseph said, the basic infrastructue in EY has existed in one form or another since the time of Avraham avinu, albeit having been updated with government funds. Do you think most of the other gadolim are simply clueless as to the disruption, property damange and public safety threats posed by the Peleg demonstrations because they aren’t allowed access to the TV and internet media, don’t leave the confines of their beis medrash and areotherwise insulated from reality by their gabboim or is it that they simply are fearful of offending the small cadre of the Rabbi Auerbach zealots and don’t want their own yeshivos and mosdos to be drawn into the conflict or they actually are supportive of this chaos but are willing to let Rabbi Auerbach take the heat.

To Avram….your musar is well taken….I hate half page long footnotes w/o punctuation.
