The Dubner magid has problems with this as the moon was complaining that he is saying something good. Asking for making the sun smaller is not good. The sun was originally created greater than the moon. Hashem saw that people were not worthy of it, so he hid the extra light in the Torah. Now they became equal, so the moon wanted that Hashem should return the light to the sun and that was a nice thing. So Hashem convinced the moon that it is good to be small and Hashem felt bad that He made the moon smaller but at the redemption the light will be returned.

The Chasam Sofer asks why we say שהכל נהיה בדברו rather than במאמרו? He answers that it also applies to us. If we don’t mess up our mouth we would have G-dly strengths with it. Maybe the Targum translates the pasuk where Hashem blew in his nose a neshama of live giving him life to speak. Whoever blows, blows from his own abilities, so we should have the abilities to change nature with our mouths but we turned it impure by speaking improperly and thereby we lost the abilites to do so.

The Gra explains והיית אך שמח refers to the last day of Yom Tov when mitzvos (sukkah, lulav and esrug) are not required to stimulate us outside the Torah which brings simcha by itself so they are diminished through only simcha.

The Midrash says for Shemini Atzeres עשה לי סעודה קטנה make Me a small meal. Explains the Binah Leitim, Succos we sacrifice all the oxen against the umas haolom, for all other nations. When we have a big meal, we tend to be busy with the food but by a small meal the showing of comraderie and friendship becomes more important. Regarding the goyim, Hashem kavayachel is busy with food rather than show any love and friendship towards them but by the Jews, the sacrifice is small to be able to spend time of love with us.

As the four species are against four body parts, spine, heart, eyes and mouth, so we shake them similar to shaking by davening where the spine represents the whole body and the others which cause our sins, so we dedicate them to the service of Hashem.

The shaking of the lulav might be like shaking by davening based on the pasuk כל עצמותי תאמרנה ה’ מי כמוך, all my bones recognize your existence Hashem. Rav Moshe ztz’l stopped shaking by davening based on a story I heard. A nazi german soldier pointed a gun on him. He said this shock I have I want to remember and use it at my davenen.

The Torah says to cover the hair and the mishna says in Kesuvas 72,1 that even on daas yehudis we divorce the wife without a kesuva. As uncivered hair is not an erva but hirhur, we can get used to it.

The esrug is taam etzo upiryo shava, its taste of the tree and fruit is the same. The child is like the father, who has not swayed from the father’s teachings. The Kappos Temorim compares a lemon to an esrug. A lemon has a lot of fruit and a little skin whereas an esrug is the opposite its is more like a tree.

We must keep the arovas together with the lulav. When seperated symbolically, we need to knock it off. I heard once that the gomlei chasodim unite the other two. The rachmonim want to help but the baishonim are ashamed to ask, so the gomlei chasodim bring them together. כי ‘גבר’ עלינו חסדו stands for the three.

The holiest day is shabbos which has sekila and seven aliyos. It says by shabbos, ‘שבת שבתון הוא לה where as by YK it says שבת שבתון הוא לכם when YK falls on sbabbos, we fast as the kapara is an oneg shabbos. The Chasam Sofer shows the greatness of the neshama. The holiest you might say is the mishkan, the residence of Hashem. Its builing is not dacha, push away shabbos but pekuach nefesh, saving a live because of the neshama is dacha shabbos. So the neshama is the holiest. Maybe YK is the most productive dqy.

The Targym Yonasan on Shemini Atzeres parshes Pinchos says that we are happy to leave the sukkah and go back to the house. The sukkah is the midbor and the house EY. Maybe the sykkah is a lesson fir the whole year’s behavuor by giving up extras using the ishpusin whivh we don’t have on Pesach, so Shemini Atzeres is graduation.

The holy Berdichever explains the Midrash ולקחתם לכם ביום הראשון it should say to take the lulav the fifteenth not the first day, says the Midrash, ראשון לחשבן עונות first for counting sins. YK the teshuva is miyiroh, from fear but Sukkas the teshuva is from ahava, from love converting the sins to good deeds, benefits, so we can start counting our sins.

Chaim Shulem, see Kesuvas (72,1) as I mentioned above where the hair, if completely uncovered, is assur min hatorah, biblically forbidden, the proof is from sota where a married woman’s hair is being uncovered. A shetel is an argument between the Beer Sheva and the Shiltei Hagiborim as I mentioned above. There is an interesting sefer on this topic called Hakeser Vehakavod Lechai Alomim where the talmidim quote their rebbi’s views with their pictures.

The mishna in Taanis says כשם כשנכנס אב ממעטין בשמחה as when Av arrives we diminish enjoyment כך משנכנס אדר מרבין בשמחה, similarly onwhen Ador arrives, we increase the enjoyment. What is the connection? Fasting is certainly done lashem shomayim. for the sake of heaven, Hashem but enjoying ourselves through eating might not, so we have Purim where our enjoyment should be lashem shimayim. Yom Kippur when we are not eating misses this enjoyment which should be made up through Erev Yom Kippur.

Covering hair is das yehudis which gets divorced without a kesuva not erva but hirhur and girls are no hirhur, or not to make her ugly.
If erva it is covered but hirhur is a problem when it looks like hair, but you can look aside when davening.
