    Why just words?

Maybe you have a limited number of swallows and then you die. And blinks. And a limited number of steps. And a limited number of head scratches.

And whenever you hit the limit on any of them, you die. Sounds just as likely.

A .22? What, in case a squirrel comes attacking?

It would have been about as helpful against this guy as a spitball.

Well, I just made another batch for the freezer. I freeze it in loaves of dough, and then just defrost and bake.

    I don’t think it’s a bad habit.

But, you do. So I’m letting you know that you are at fault for what I consider good, but you consider bad.

It rises very nicely into a big loaf. It is about as healthy as any other bread. You can make it white or whole wheat. I make it white. It still looks kinda dark, because of the barley.

    The crust is amazing though.

I wouldn’t put it in challah. It is kind of a heavy bread, with bits of barley. And very crusty.

twisted: I am a brewer. Perhaps I’m getting the science wrong, but that’s the general idea. I buy my grain already malted and milled from a homebrew supply store. There is one in Tel Aviv called Beer-D, run by a guy named Gadi.

Aurora: Both. This recipe came from wiki-how. But, I like to cook recipes from Fabio who has a cooking show on YahooNews. I don’t like to watch Yahoo news anymore since they are nuts, but I follow his show on facebook. Also, I get recipes and know-how from my dad, who can cook like Fabio.

Of course, you don’t need to do all that work. When you buy it, it is already malted, kilned, roasted, and milled. You just need to steep it and wash it. And make the bread.

    Ah, I’m glad you asked.

Spent grain is the byproduct of making beer. It is the pieces of grain that are left after you have extracted the wort (which you will then boil and ferment and make into beer).

Or, to be more precise it is barley that has been:

    Malted

    Kilned

    Perhaps Roasted

    Milled coarsely

Steeped at about 150 degrees so that starches convert to sugar

Washed at 170 degrees to wash the wort off the grains.

Put in a ziplock bag in the fridge to make bread out of.

OU has very Choshuv & eminent Rabbonim on their Va’ad, & it is 100% Motzi Shem La’az & unacceptable to in any way denigrate these Gedolei haDor.

OU is a top notch Hechsher, and we should all be Makir Tov for the wonderful work they do for us

Of course. But it is important for people to know that you can’t rely on the symbol, and you really need to call them about each product each time you buy it. (or be signed up for the email alerts, and go search them each time, but not everyone even has email.)

And that that is what they think everyone is doing, and that they rely on that.

So, I guess they’re really good at kosher certifying, but just not great about communicating it to the public.

    PBA – please stop insulting.

MDG: I think it is necessary to point out to everyone that this man knows nothing, and nothing he writes can be relied upon in any manner.

RD – you have a decent amount of knowledge and good analysis skills, but please be careful when you speak. You’re not a posek.

MDG: I also don’t like to put people down, but here it is very necessary. He is maligning the entire minhag ashkenaz as being merely a chumrah or a choice. He is not merely being disrespectful to the acharonim (his usual modus operandi)– he is completely wrong.

I don’t know if he has good analytical skills or not. I do know that he knows less than nothing. Less than nothing, because even what he knows just makes things worse, because he twists and misconstrues it. Thus, less than nothing.

And, in case you are wondering, MDG, I had to say all this to counter what you just said. So maybe if you don’t want to see me need say more about RD, you should just keep out of it.

yay. you found a rema that you think I don’t hold like.

There are myriad rema’s that we don’t hold like. We generally do hold like him, but it isn’t a rule.

You seriously know less than nothing.

The Rema’s shita is a chumra, period. He holds like one rishon, while the Beis Yosef/Mechaber holds like all the other rishonim. Ashkenazic stringency does not equal halakha.

Are you calling the Mechaber incorrect? Do you pasken like the Rema when he says that you can hold a wedding on Shabbat and that it is mutar to drink wine made by goyim in places where that is customary? Stop being foolish now.

Wow. You really know even less than nothing. It really is quite bewildering.

With all due respect, you don’t know anything.

We (ashkenazim) pasken like that rema min hadin. The OU is absolutely not following the mechaber on that for anything.

If you pasken like the sefardim, by all means. But it is beyond ridiculous to present it as a choice or a chumrah.

My unscientific observation is that the children of the full tuition paying gvirim, (those young motivated go getters who got where they are because they are very aggressive) have a much higher incidence of ADD.

Which should lead us to conclude, that ADD is not a bad thing.

Nah, sometimes it’s just that they were hypnotized accidentally while watching a magic show, and had their memories switched, so that they think they didn’t have shalom bayis, but really they did.

That’s why any competent rav would ask if they have been to a magic show lately before granting a divorce.

I’m listening. So far he said that they don’t have a DE designation, because they think we will get confused. I find it bewildering that they are more concerned about that, than that we will eat it assuming it is keilim, if they think it is not ok. http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/ou-kashrus-is-not-reliable

Then he talks about reading the ingredients. He says that there may be dairy in the “natural flavors”. That seems true; natural flavors means flavoring derived from things thought of as food. Maybe we should be choshesh when it says “natural flavors”. But many products don’t have natural flavors.

Then he talks about allergy warnings. He says they will require warning if there are 3ppm. But then vaguely says there are times they will not require that, but no examples. I’ll look up the laws.

I don’t believe him; and think if they cared, they would have a DE designation. I think they know you can just look at the allergy warning and they are relying on that. (And I still have no idea how they would not recall a product which they knew was mislabled. DE will cause confusion, but no D on a milchig product won’t cause confusion?)

I am especially proud of this one, which was kind of a joke:

Why should people who suffer from mental illness be treated any differently

Does the cure for cancer involve the doctor relating to you emotionally?

Look, I’m fine with you thinking that it is ok. But to say there is nothing to talk about and that it is exactly like having an opposite gender cashier at the bakery–that’s a bit much.

The only reason what we do here (talk and joke with each other, often single guys and girls, often married guys and women, often one of each) is not insanely assur is that we don’t know each other and really have no way of finding out who each other are.

There is a website I was basically chased off because I was in the minority position, so I know what its like.
