My son lives on Caye Caulker actually. So going to Belize City is just an annoyance. He’ll probably pick up a few cases of bananas while he’s there though because they’re cheaper on the mainland.
September 16, 2013 12:54 pm at 12:54 pm in reply to: Getting Married in a state that writes kesubos for mishkav zachar #975079popa_bar_abbaParticipantLegal recognition = societal recognition. It is the same thing. In a secular state, the government fulfills that role which used to be filled by the religious authority.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell, the story might not be 100% true. But I do have an unrelated mazel tov in my family, so I’ll accept that.

begging for help.
Meh. Correlation does not equal causation. You’re assuming that the internet is causing the problem, instead of that the problem is causing their wanting to do those things on the internet. ????
September 16, 2013 3:45 am at 3:45 am in reply to: Tension based on spouse's change in tznius #975452popa_bar_abbaParticipantI had the sense to keep out of her decision-making process. 😉
Well done, sir. lol
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMe!
September 16, 2013 2:02 am at 2:02 am in reply to: Friend wants to marry girl he met online #1187448popa_bar_abbaParticipantI met my wife online.
Me too. Actually, I never even knew she was online, and then one day we were going down to mitzraim because of a raav, and we passed a apple store and she went on YWN and I said “atah yadati ki eishes yefas toar at”.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThanks torah!
September 15, 2013 10:31 pm at 10:31 pm in reply to: Friend wants to marry girl he met online #1187443popa_bar_abbaParticipantOn a more serious note though, this is a terrible thing. If they were so unconcerned about tznius before they were married, imagine the evil things they will do after they are married. Will they continue dating the random strangers on the internet?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantkk, sorry. 🙂
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf someone wears techeiles and their rebbe does not, would you eat in their house?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPAA:
I dunno what they’re saying. But I’m saying that I don’t wear it because my rosh yeshiva–who is alive and well–does not wear it.
V’su lo midi.
We can discuss from today to tomorrow the hashkafa and halacha of it, but as long as my rebbe is alive and not wearing it, there is no way in the world that I am.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI agree with OOM, but only if I can mean it obnoxiously.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThat was what he thought. Does ?????? ?”? ????? agree with you?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSomeone asked me in shul why a buried body cannot be tumas tehom if the people who buried it died. It seems to me that tumas tehom is if nobody ever knew about it.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantsounds like a question for a Rabbi you like.
Or a troll.
Did someone call my name?
I think you should pretend to be frum, but really still be rationalist. And you should marry someone who is pretending to be rationalist but is really frum. And your kids can pretend to be both.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOr sleepdive!
popa_bar_abbaParticipantlol
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWe hope you stay for awhile, and we always have spots in SUC!
Is that because all the member-usernames are only one person?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t like it. It cheapens the idea. Only people who actually have a real thing they need mechila for should call, and they should only call those people.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOnion rings, french fries, broccoli.
September 13, 2013 8:23 pm at 8:23 pm in reply to: My hobbies are swordfighting and hunting buffalo and other disappointing details #975865popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhen I was in yeshiva, we noticed that everytime the gemara introduced a ???? ????, he ended up doing something idiotic.
So I decided that ???? probably means “jerk”.
September 13, 2013 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm in reply to: Where can I find Vidui with additional Aveiros? #974760popa_bar_abbaParticipantpopa_bar_abbaParticipantI used to wonder how I could say ????, since I would never do leitzanus.
But then I saw that it includes also ??????, and I don’t really know what that is, but I probably did it.
September 13, 2013 8:17 pm at 8:17 pm in reply to: Friend wants to marry girl he met online #1187436popa_bar_abbaParticipantSounds like a couple of college shkotzim. You can just tell your kids that they aren’t frum.

But he’s dead now.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantlol Goq
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy wife and I did that when we were dating. But I held both my rooster and her hen. The guy doing it didn’t know what a rooster or hen were. I thought that was forgivable, except that he was doing kapparos for blasteds sake.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy wife and I did that when we were dating. But I held both my rooster and her hen. The guy doing it didn’t know what a rooster or hen were. I thought that was forgivable, except that he was doing kapparos for blasteds sake.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantthat is a website
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy do married guys wear white?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantKill them
September 8, 2013 1:49 pm at 1:49 pm in reply to: Why Would a Girl Even Want to Learn Talmud? #973972popa_bar_abbaParticipantTo answer the OP: Maybe they’re trying to convert?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAbsolutely. My online persona has thick skin though, and I don’t even remember any untoward criticism. Very sweet of you to post though.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOh, I thought that was your way of asking mechilah.
Also, I didn’t think you meant me, but someone else thought so, so I responded as such.
So retroactively, I also didn’t think you meant to ask mechila since I only thought that to be ridiculous.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThey should cut off their nose so that they won’t cut off their nose to spite their face.
September 8, 2013 2:36 am at 2:36 am in reply to: Why Would a Girl Even Want to Learn Talmud? #973968popa_bar_abbaParticipantI haven’t read the whole thread, but are we talking about the bavli or the yerushalmi?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThank you syag. I am mochel.
September 8, 2013 1:48 am at 1:48 am in reply to: Popa's reflections on Motzaei Shabbos; Haazinu #973013popa_bar_abbaParticipantI said over number 2 at my sheva brachos.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOf course the posted it. The story and allegory are retarded.
It is good for our cause when our opponents write retarded arguments.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI think you should do both.
Don’t wait until you lose weight, but start dating again and also try to lose weight.
I think you’ll even find that dating will be an impetus to lose weight. Especially if you find someone you like.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIn my humble experience, this is almost always the girl’s fault.
This is the curse of odom harishon, that ????? ???? ???? ???.
popa_bar_abbaParticipanthiguy:
You should certainly ask them for any money back that you paid. I imagine they will give that back to you. If they do not, then you should contact a rav and summon them to beis din.
A notary public won’t make any difference.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf I covered my hair with wide mesh, it wouldn’t be covered halachically.
That’s because since it has holes in it, the strings of the mesh are battul to the holes and are considered to not exist.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantdoesn’t the invisibility cloak render the wearer invisible? In which case when Hermoine is wearing it, no one can see her or her hair. the cloak is not only invisible, it makes you invisible too. its not like the point of the cloak was that u cudnt see it so people would be like, “its freezing outside and youre not wearing a cloak???” and you could smugly say “but I am friend, but I am” leaving your friend awestruck. its so that people CANT SEE YOU. and you can sneak around castles at night looking for mirrors of Erised. and obviously, so you can cover your hair without actually wearing a kerchief that will ruin your appearance, which becomes a non-issue anyway bc you no longer appear.
Classic halachic technicalism that completely misses the whole point of the halacha.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBesides, Syag, if the point was that it shouldn’t be seen, then how does it help to wear hair on top of it–that’s just more hair.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantEveryone knows she is Jewish. The Order of the Phoenix is a clear reference to the Elders of Zion.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYou mean as opposed to a community, where you shteig to a black hat, but are free to molest children
Right. But I am not a molester so I don’t usually pick where I live based on whether I will be free to molest children. I’m glad you brought that perspective to the table for us. That is a benefit of an open forum that we get perspectives from the full range of life experiences.
OP: If you think you might be a molester, you should definitely live on the UWS since there are less children there to molest.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantNo you don’t. You are not a “Randist”. Tax money has to go somewhere
I think you miswrote that.
It sounds as if you are saying the ultimate value is the tax, and the govt distributes it because it would be too annoying to store in big vaults.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYes, there are obnoxious pests in the world.
Someone once reached out and adjusted my teffilin.
I asked why he did that.
He said because it is proper to do it for noi mitzva.
I asked him if he also reaches out and rebuttons someone’s shirt if it is buttoned wrong.
