The mention of “lo sossur” that anonymous1000 alluded to is erroneous. There ,we are talking about halachic matters, not “milei d’alma”, matters of general interest. There is no obligation to follow any Rov in matters that are not halachic.

Just for the record, in case anyone is confused by Rabbi of Berlin’s statements, he has previously gone on record that shemita is not considered halacha for this purpose since it is not in the shulchan aruch http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/about-the-rca-i-do-shudder/page/3

Shmear it with oil, and stick it in the oven at 450 for an hour or two.

Then make sure to keep it seasoned by greasing it when you use it.

And never ever ever wash it with soap.

Sam: His star pupil who he holds out as such to the whole world is a blazing apikores who publicly denies torah is min hashamayim, and the person he picked to replace himself at YCT defends him. I don’t think I am off by ascribing the opinions to him.

Rabbi Avi Weiss is no clown. He has done far more for Am Yisrael than any anonymous internet commentator.

I am makir tov for the advocacy he has done on behalf of jews, in Russia and elsewhere. That doesn’t make him a maamin.

That was a pretty hilarious conversation there. I wonder which poster that Holmes fellow was. He should come back over and let us know.

Mercury: Really, I don’t have any problem with this thread, and I respect your question and your sincerity in asking it.

and talking about comfort levels? im not the one sitting in the chair looking nearly completely helpless with my mouth wide open and having a bunch of poky looking things coming at me. ya…i’m just fine and dandy 🙂

Whatev’s. I’m not the girl sticking my fingers between the gaping teeth of some lunatic who could be popa for all I know. Let’s just say that nobody ever got bitten being a yeshiva guy.

You should get a cast iron.

They are about 20 dollars on Amazon. Made by Lodge.

I think it should be kashered prior to use. You should run it through a self-clean oven for an hour. Then immediately re-season it.

    Then use.

What is the purpose of this thread besides to make fun of the fact that gedolim advise people on voting and that people care about gedolim’s opinion on that?

I didn’t get a laugh out of you. I was more amused that the CR was listed there than that this thread is listed there. This thread is a legitimate halachic issue, as well as a legitimate issue in terms of even if muttar that it makes you uncomfortable.

If you must talk funny, I think the funniest would be if I was the patient and knew it was muttar (if it is) and realized you were uncomfortable. That would make me comfortable and then I’d think it was funny.

His psak in which he said that a woman can be a judge was accepted by just about every part of the Orthodox world, the only exceptions being the extremists like Neturei Karta (if they can be considered Orthodox).

Charlie, let me introduce you to how your mind works.

Anyone to the right of you = Neturei Karta.

Charlie: You must be joking. It was not accepted by anyone except left wing loonies like Weiss and his co-clowns who anyway do not believe Torah is min hashamayim. For blasted sake, if I didn’t believe the Torah was from Hashem, I also wouldn’t care what it says.

We have binah yeseira, and though may be perceived as less logical, the feminine mind has almost infinite ability to discern the important things in life, with no NEED for male logic.

    +1

Well, =1. Because I think both that men need input from the feminine mind as well as that women need input from the male mind.

You are making a couple of wrong assumptions, and one egregious false accusation.

Why do you assume that everyone is out to get the chareidim? Most of the women that got beat up and insulted were not “provocateurs” or anything- they were just women riding the bus!

There were not any women that got beat up, and certainly not a large number like you imply. That is your egregious false accusation.

And the women who are the cause the problem are provocateurs who are doing it on purpose, and willingly admit as much. They think they are Rosa Parks.

Either way, egged and dan are public bus companies. If the chareidim have a problem, they should create their own private bus company. Until then, they shouldn’t be allowed to pressure secular bus authorities to accomodate extremists who don’t even hold by rav moshe’s kulah.

That is your mistaken assumption. They tried to create their own bus company, but the government does not allow it because Egged is granted a monopoly on their lines by the state. HTH.

If a man does not want to sit next to a woman, he should move away. Why is the onus on the women to move??

Right. And if almost everyone who uses the bus line wants to sit seperately, then the easiest way to facilitate that is to simply make one end for men and the other end for women.

And then if either a man or a woman accidentally sits on the wrong end, then you politely tell them of the system. And if they are normal and respect you, they will move instead of the entire rest of the bus having to sit not the way they want.

And if a man or a woman deliberately sits on the wrong end because she has an agenda against the way that almost everyone who rides the bus thinks is the proper way to practice their religion–then yes, I would call them shkotzim and force them to move.

Ok. In that case, my advice to you is different.

Stay in BMG, and learn full time. And figure out what you want to do for college when you leave in a few years.

It just seems to me like you are trying to be poseach al shtei hasiipim. You want to stay in BMG part time which is impossible, and go to a college part time but not be limited by the offerings for part time programs, which is also impossible.

So I said you need to leave yeshiva. But you don’t want to. So the solution is stay in yeshiva until you want to.

    1. You should live your life for what you want–not to get dates. You’ll find a girl who appreciates you for what you are. Besides, the girls who want guys planning to work want guys with a good plan, and you aren’t going to get a very good plan by going to some yeshiva for 19 year olds and taking liberal arts courses.

    2. Got no advice on that. If you aren’t ready to go to college, then don’t go. Find a career that doesn’t require college. Maybe become an auto mechanic. Or an IT guy and learn it all for free on the internet.

    What has better prospects,

    1) Graduating as valedictorian at a not-so-good, local law school

    2) Graduating middle-third at a semi-prestigious law school

    3) Graduating bottom-bottom at a top tier?

Assuming your first choice is a Tier 4 school, I think I’d rather be the third choice.

    My friend,

I definitely do get your situation. Also, if you have been learning in BMG type yeshivos for 6-8 years, you are not looking for a place like Landers.

There is no such thing as a BMG type yeshiva which allows college. And frankly, it is a bit too late for you to start doing college at nights–you need a real plan now.

That doesn’t mean you aren’t serious about your learning or that it isn’t foremost–it means that you are also serious about the rest of life.

But, pray, do you approve of attacking a frum (or any) soldier? Do you approve of abusing women and treating them like third-class citizens? Do you approve of avoiding any responsibility of protectin jewish lives from their enemies? If you say yes to these questions, then we truly are in different camps!

    1. No.

    2. No, but we disagree on what that is defined as.

    Here’s my advice:

The tenor of this thread seems like you are looking for a place where you can learn much of the day, and that will have some sort of college situation. I don’t think that is what you should be looking for.

You should figure out what sort of college you want to go to. Do you have a BTL already and want to go to law school (usually a bad idea unless you are in the 99th percentile of LSAT scorers)? Do you want to go for accounting? Nursing? OT? MBA? PA?

Then, find a program that will work well for you. And then find a chavrusah to learn with at night or find a yeshiva in the area with a shiur you can go to if you can schedule your classes around it.

Meaning, you say you are an “older bachur”. I’m guessing you mean at least 26. So you should figure out what you want to do and do it. Most of the things you might want to do are really not going to work as a night program at this point, and you shouldn’t limit yourself to the few programs available for half day learning which are intended for people much younger than you who have much more time.

There are options out there for you. Truth is, I even once met a fellow from BMG who had then gone to Yale College at about your age. Nice fellow, if he’s reading this.

And don’t sweat the shidduchim–there’s plenty girls who will want a working BMG guy.

PBA, your criticism is both inappropriate and incorrect. Supporters of charedim have no right to determine the validity of other people’s concern. But even if they did, it’s simply wrong to assume that the concern comes from some sort of unjustified dislike of charedim.

We’ve got a long history here, this isn’t his first post on the issue. In the context, it is wrong to read this thread as anything other than an opportunity to “catch” chareidim in a wrongdoing.
