HaLeiViParticipant
I once heard in the name of Rav Belski Shlita, on this topic, that when you look in the New York Times you see ‘sundown’, ‘sunrise’. Actually, if you look at any astrolgy text you’ll see that, too. The fact is you cannot calculate a zenith by your head point driving past the entity.
By the way, all those Gaonim/ Rishonim you mention are actually talking about this Gemara specifically, or Meklala Itmar?

What I wrote lacks in coherence. It should have said, Chazal did not know everything. Some Tanoim were able to derive scientific facts from Pesukim, as was the case with Reb Yehoshua ben Chananya and the Greek philosopher. However it is evident that they did not know everything from…
HaLeiViParticipantWho is this majority and how many of the ones that we usually Pasken from?
The Gemara in Pesachim is obviously cryptic, since anyone looking up in the sky will see the sun going down, not up. Perhaps the question was how to look at it: is the sun going away from us — above, beyond our reach — or is it merely going down, as the physical fact is.
Chazal did not know everything. Some Tanoim were able to derive scientific facts from Pesukim, as was the case with Reb Yehoshua ben Chananya and the Greek philosopher, and the sending of broken musical instruments to Egypt, and the consulting a doctor or sitting out on a farm for a year. However, all over Shas you can find Braysos about scientific facts. You’ll notice that the only science accepted by Chazal are Mesoras and Braysos. Rav Popa is often Medayek science from Mishnos. Chazal make it clear when their information is from the outside. Bottom line is, we accept their words unquestingly just like they accepted the words of the Tanaaim unquestingly.
HaLeiViParticipantIn your explanation of ‘man changed’, you talk aboud G-d changed.
HaLeiViParticipantThe same goes for encyclopedias. When I saw how they wrote up Yidden and Yiddishkeit, it made me question any other society they portray. Also, I figure, if they don’t begin to understand the mentality of Arabs today, how can you trust their depiction of ancient people?
HaLeiViParticipantOcassionaly misinformation does get published, but a legitimate journalistic source will seek that out and print a retraction.
The only question is, on which page do they publish that retraction?
I heard a journalist say how they were taught in journalist school that their job is to promote peace… No it is not! Their job is to report the news. That’s it.
Journalists task themselves with making everything ‘equal’. That is a corruption of the true ideal of reporting exactly what you see, without regard to your own opinion or judgement. They are doing the opposite.
The main reason many jounalists report biased news against Israel is because of terrorism. Since the reality is biased one way, they have to bend it the other way — to make it ‘equal’.

Unless Universal is a town in Galicia, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

It seems like it is a Galitzianer Minhag that was adopted by the rest of the Chassider Velt, today. I read somewhere that the Tzanzer Rav used to make Kiddush on wiskey. But, when he travelled to Hungary, he didn’t.
September 21, 2011 3:44 am at 3:44 am in reply to: Chassidish Minhagim and which Chassidus does it #972648HaLeiViParticipantIsn’t the hook and line a new innovation? The Gemara speaks of nets, never of fishing rods.
HaLeiViParticipantI don’t think they’ll think you are a troll if you are consistent. Also, what I had in mind with that idea is that she’ll get comfortable after seeing her own opinions in her own name. After a while she might be willing to type it in herself.
HaLeiViParticipantDon’t think of it that you are holding yourself back. You are merely deciding against posting and broadcasting a certain idea. There are many topics of which I had strong opinions, that I decided not to contribute, for any number of reasons. I’m not in middle of a discussion, where not answering is an answer of its own.
This is a message board. It is a place where people drop by and post a message, usually pertinent to the topic, and others read them and sometimes post another message.
HaLeiViParticipantMake a screen name for her. When poting in her name use her screen name.
HaLeiViParticipantSam4, I’m aware of that Gemara. That was Min Shamayim, but creating with the Sheymos of Yetzira is not, or shouldn’t be.
The Yaavetz has a teshuva where a guy killed someone and wanted to know if he can swear falsely to save himself from the authorities.
A: That would be adding another Cheit.
HaLeiViParticipantTo those who cannot understand:
The difference is if you would use it for something important that this person doesn’t need.
HaLeiViParticipantThe Maharal writes in Ner Mitzva that Malchus Yishmael is a continuation of Malchus Paras. When Sefarim categorize everyone into these two groups it is because all others follow one of these two. Therefore, they fall under the same category.
HaLeiViParticipantfruits? Personally speaking I don’t enjoy pomegranates.
Why not? Just put on a smock and gloves, and enjoy.
HaLeiViParticipantRaphael, that’s a very loose connection, hardly a reason for the term Galus Edom, with all its implications. Yitzchok’s Brocho to Eisav and the Nevua that was told to Rivka have no meaning according to your theory.
Besides, Hurdus wasn’t put in by the Romans. He was a royal servant that made a coup.
HaLeiViParticipantSefer Yetzira is not Min Shamayim. Rashi says that Sefer Yetzira is using the Sheimos that Hashem used to create the world. If Hashem created Treifa animals then, then you can do it now, too, with Sefer Yetzira.
HaLeiViParticipantAnd while any medrash might refare to arabs as a race, islam as a religion started around 1,300 years ago. That will be at least 500 years after any medrash.
Not ‘any’ Medrash. Many Midrashim were written or finished in the time of the Geonim. The Medrash in Nasso speaks about the Cristians and Arabs claiming that they have the Torah. That is why we didn’t write Torah Shel Bichsav, so that they shouldn’t lay claim to that as well, says the Medrash. The Kamarna writes that the Raaya Mahimna in the Zohar Hakadosh was written by a Gaon named Shalom.
Who wrote, “Ha D’reb Ashi Bedusa Hi”, if Reb Ashi made the Gemara? The Tzemach Dovid writes that it was written 70 years after Rav Ashi was Niftar.
HaLeiViParticipantSam2, good point. The Sefarim break down society into these two groups, Edom and Yshmael.
As for the Edom business, it is confusing. How do they come to be Rome? Moreover, the Romans are referred to as Kitim, by Balaq. The ibn Ezra says, for these reasons, that Rome is not Edom.
However, I resloved the issue when I read the Sefer Hayashar (old Medrash compilation) that the Kitim fought with Edom. After being defeated a few times, the Kitim eventualy succeeded in conquering the Edomites. After that there wasn’t another Edom king and the two peoples mixed.
HaLeiViParticipantdescendants of Esav who lived generally south and east of Eretz Yisroel. In other words, Arabs.
Keep in mind that the whole world originated in the mideast. Does that make us all Arabs?
HaLeiViParticipantAnd what our kids are exposed to…
HaLeiViParticipantCoffee, it actually says that about Edom. Check out the Zohar Chadash in Parshas Balaq. The only difficulty there is in interpreting what is physical and what is Ruchnius. It is also hard to tell which events happened or will happen.
HaLeiViParticipantAnd the icon for that is . . _
HaLeiViParticipantNo. Not a half, either.
HaLeiViParticipantAccording to them we do believe them when it is Beyada. Otherwise, you’ll need a live in Mashgiach.
HaLeiViParticipantSam2, Chatzi Nezek is also a Gezeiras Hakosuv. Will you say there is no reason? But anyhow, wherever an Eid Echad is Kosher, so is a woman. In other words, we have no problem believing her. She is just not a Kosher Eid.
The Ben Ish Chai gives a few reasons why she is Pasul. Keep in mind, though, that Eidus in itself is a Gezeiras Hakosuv. There are times that even when Beis Din saw something themselves, we need two other people to be Eidim.
HaLeiViParticipantShould American indians be living tax free as an apology for white man’s treatment, or since they are enjoying the benefits of our government they should pay taxes?
HaLeiViParticipantThere’s nothing wrong with a general statement when it is true. You are uncomfortable when you meet them because it is akward. If you are confusing that with the emotions of meeting and being turned down, then you don’t even know what emotional means. What a boy!
HaLeiViParticipantThanks for telling me that, although I think you meant Yatzmich.
HaLeiViParticipantDon’t take her opinion more seriously than she does. It was an outburst of the way the complaint sounded to her ears at that particular moment.
HaLeiViParticipantI think the Hebrew one is good for aanyone not planning on learning the Hebrew keyboard. Some cell phones started out with ABC keyboards. I guess they didn’t go well.
HaLeiViParticipantPeople say all kinds of things depending on how the argument struck them at first. Had someone started the conversation in a different way in a different setting, perhaps she would have espoused the opposite view.
HaLeiViParticipantZahavasdad, you mean Ir Hanidachas.
Miswesterner, more appropriate would be Lehagdil Torah Ulehaadira. That is what Chazal answer to this question.
Learning Torah is a Mitzva, no matter which topic. Therefore it is very applicable for you to learn it. How about another question, why do we learn Gemara at all? Why can’t we just go through the Kitzur?
The Maharal explains that the Torah is the logic of Hashem. When you adapt your thinking to that of Hashem, you are making yourself more similar to Him.
When you learn about a certain Mitzva it is as if you performed it. If you know that you can never do a specific Mitzva, then surely you should learn its Halachos.
HaLeiViParticipantIt’s because the last minute is still only one minute long, no matter when the Zman is.
HaLeiViParticipantI’m sure you get enough suggestions in the mail.
HaLeiViParticipantIf you have a relationship with someone, they read your body language and reciprocate. In most cases closeness and distance has to do with trust. When Aron Hakohen told a person that his friend wants to be close again the person would like his friend, as well.
A great Tzaddik once said that just like you need to have Emuna in Hashem you need to have Emuna that your friend loves you. It takes Emuna in the friendship when your friend doesn’t return a call or even got upset at you. Most broken relationships began as misunderstandings. If people would fully trust that the relationship is strong they would see things differently (just as a wack on the back can have opposite messages, depending on who wacked you).
When you do your part and try to feel the closeness deeply and truly, it will show in your body language, and will be understood subconsiously, giving that person the trust to return the friendship.
HaLeiViParticipantcoffee, Chazal usually call it Ayin Ra’ah.
September 12, 2011 8:07 pm at 8:07 pm in reply to: Washing negel vasser before getting out of bed #1090514HaLeiViParticipantThose who consider the whole house as Daled Amos only quote the Shita of Rebbi Shimon ben Elozor who said that a room is like Daled Amos — by a Meis.
The Daled Amos comes from a Zohar Hakadosh that the Beis Yosef quotes. Otherwise the basic Halacha would require that you wash your hands before Davening.
HaLeiViParticipantHey Goq, nothing mentioned here helped!?
HaLeiViParticipantbut suffice to say, they are not a source of nachas for their fathers (or children) right now.
Are you :?)
Could he have friends from out of school? What about a cousin. A relative that is slighly older can be a good choice of someone who can come over once in a while to play with him.
HaLeiViParticipantICOT, it’s a good idea if they’ll listen. In my experience they hear what you say, agree full heartedly, and announce that a ‘certain’ boy had a problem, and everyone knows exactly who he is talking about.
I don’t know if a better ball will make more popular. It probably won’t. It has to do with his personality and self image. Some are born to be popular in certain ages, others for different ages; some in all ages and others in none. As the children mature and different skills are needed, different boys shine and rise. Just wait it out.
To help him deal with it now you can point out that it is wrong to leave people out and there is nothing wrong with him. Give him an interesting book or project to keep him busy during recess.
HaLeiViParticipantI wonder if it’s really the other way around. The mother might have told him to make the first call, and he made the second one in her name. The old message is irrelevant and should be forgotten about.
HaLeiViParticipantWhere Chazal allowed to believe in it?
HaLeiViParticipantI don’t think the Taana on these Resho’im is through Hilchos Shlichus. Also, I recall that by a king it is considered that he killed. That is why it was as if Dovid Hamelech killed Uria.
