Based on the responses, I suppose the L-A-T-T-E-R.

Considering the fact that I was born OTD and that my parents are divorced (and hence I’ve been exposed to those concepts since birth), I guess I’m hopelessly corrupted. 🙁

WolfishMusingsParticipantDo you think my OP was really that unclear.
It’s unclear to me as well. Of course, I’m as dumb as a stump, so that’s natural. But if it’s also unclear to someone as smart as Mod-80, I don’t feel as bad about not getting it.
Can you please clarify what it is, exactly, we’re talking about?

Sometimes it is. Going up to an ugly person and stating “boy, you’re ugly” is offensive, even if it is the truth.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipant(If you were being sarcastic, then just ignore this post.)
I wasn’t being sarcastic. However, it’ll be two (and maybe three) years before the kid will be in first grade. That’s not the “upper grades.” IOW, they’re not committed to the place they choose for pre-school.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantmaybe your kids will have a good influence on you:)
Nah. I’m completely and utterly incorrigible.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantYou see, son, when a silly mommy thread and a silly daddy thread love each other…
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantEven pay and fay
You do realize that Pay and Fay are really the same letter, right?
in Hebrew, whatever letter you see is what it is and always will be, it doesn’t change
I know that in some circles it is fashionable to pronounce a cholom as “oy,” but in others, a cholom without a yud after it is “oh” and with a yud after it is “oy.” Likewise, a shuruk can have a different sound depending on whether or not a yud follows it.
based on the next letter
Usually not, but often on the preceding letter (such as the rules surrounding when a dagesh is used, or whether a sheva is a nah or nach).
Ultimately, I think your original premise is flawed. You are comparing two languages (Hebrew and English), concluding that Hebrew is easier to read (which may or may not be true) and then concluding that Hebrew must be easier to read than ALL languages. Needless to say, your conclusion is not supported by the premises of your argument.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantFamily time is NEVER counter-productive.
A parent can never spend too-much time with the kids.
I don’t know about that. I’ve been told by people that every minute I spend with my kids and exposing them to my values is corrupting their neshamos irreparably. I’ve also been told (on these very boards) that by playing games with my kids (as opposed to learning with them every available minute) I am wasting their time.

(Note: I still disagree with the idea that any time away from learning is completely and utterly forbidden.)
WolfishMusingsParticipantThank you… that helps quite a bit.
I’ll make a recommendation in a moment, but before I do, I’d like to make the following observation: all the points you stress are probably not that important for preschool. Probably any school where your kid won’t feel like an outsider and that teaches your general hashkafah would be acceptable for preschool.
In addition, keep in mind that you are in no way “locked in” when you choose a preschool. It’s not as if the decision that you make today is going to determine his academic future for the next ten years.
That being said, I would recommend (depending on your geography, of course) Yeshiva Toras Emes Kaminetz*. The hashkafah of the school fits what you are looking for. The rabbeim there are generally excellent, motivated and do a very good job. The secular studies department at the yeshiva is well-run and the kids come away learning quite a bit. Rabbi Engelberg is a true professional in education.
The Wolf
* I state all this about the elementary school. I know very little about the high school — but that really shouldn’t be a concern for you at this stage of the game anyway.
WolfishMusingsParticipantbitul torah, issur deoriasa!!
And yet, here you are, posting on this forum.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI know this is going to sound silly, but I’m going to ask anyway.
Labels such as “heimish” and “good secular education” are meaningless, in that almost every school labels themselves in such a way.
To get a good recommendation for a school that will fit your child and the goals you seek for him/her, I suggest you answer the following questions:
1. Boy or girl? And what age/grade?
2. What exactly do you mean by “heimish?” Do you mean what is commonly called “yeshivish?” Do you mean “chassidic?”
3. What are the goals for this child in terms of limudei kodesh? Are you looking for a school that will emphasize “all-learning, all the time” or you are looking for a school with a more balanced approach?
4. What type of environment would best suit your child? Does you child need the type of school where there is little or no variation in the schedule day-to-day, or does your child need a school where the routine is sometimes broken up by a small trip or outing?
5. What are the secular education goals for this child? Do you want a school that will prepare him/her for college? Or just teaching to pass the Regents exams?

For example, Weird Al Yankovic is an artist who has made a living by taking popular songs and putting new (and funny) lyrics to the tunes.
From what I’ve read, Yankovic is not required by law to get permission from the artists he parodies. He does so anyway, because he wants to maintain good relationships with the artists, but if were so inclined, he could parody a song with no copyright issues.

A. A policy of no women pictures is something I can understand and respect.
It’s not my approach, but I can understand it as well.
B. In that situation (with that policy), I would have photoshopped them out, with a notation that they had been removed.
If they had done that, I would have no real complaints against them; but that’s not what they did.
C. I really don’t think this is a big deal. At all.
Apparently lots of people disagree with you. 🙂

Because even though the paper apologized, there are still people here on this very forum saying that the paper was absolutely correct in doing what they did and that removing Mrs. Clinton was the absolute right thing to do.
As soon as the people here are willing to admit that the paper made a mistake and that it would have been more honest to either not publish the photo (or publish it with a notification that it was altered), then I’d be willing to let the matter rest and “move on.”
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantThank you WOLF and all others. I will think about it and approach him probably next week.
Do you have a good solid reason for waiting until next week? Is there any reason to think that by next week there will be any change (aside from his owing you an additional week’s pay)? If not, what are you waiting for?
I understand you want to be nice and mentchlichkeit about this, but unless you’re going to volunteer to work for a week for free, you have to do this TODAY. If he hasn’t been paying you, you owe him no considerations (such as the extra week) at all aside from basic civility.
Besides, the week you’re working for free will also delay you a week in your search for a paying job.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantOK, SO NOW HOW DO I TELL HIM THAT I WANNA LEAVE???
Firstly, don’t shout.
Secondly, go into his office, and explain, calmly and rationally, that you need a paycheck. Normal ethics would say that you should give two weeks’ notice, but in this instance, I think leaving without that is justified.
Tell him that you are leaving because (a) you’re not getting paid and (b) you don’t see any changes on the immediate horizon. In addition, tell him that you are not relinquishing any rights to any monies you are already owed and that if you don’t see payment by (pick a reasonable date), you will be taking him to bais din and/or secular court. Then you leave.
That’s all there is to it. If he’s not paying you, he’s already broken the cardinal tenet of employment. You don’t owe him any consideration beyond civility.

May 12, 2011 5:46 pm at 5:46 pm in reply to: Firestorm After Der Zeitung Deletes Hillary Clinton from Iconic Photo #1052720WolfishMusingsParticipantYou say that “people viewing the photo would have believed that they weren’t in the room”, which is not true; they merely might not have known that they were not in the room, which is completely different.
Do you realize we’re heading into “it depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is” territory? C’mon, you’re splitting that hair so thin that there’s barely anything there.
The bottom line is this: if you were to ask an average person, upon seeing the doctored photo, if Hillary Clinton was there, sitting next to whoever it was she was sitting next to, most people would say no — and that includes the readers of this paper. They would not say “Oh, that must have been Hillary’s spot, but she was taken out.”
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI guess my answer is to go, but i’m afraid I will get no money at all what I’m owed.. and I worked for it so I deserve it.
Staying because you hope to get paid is called “throwing good money after bad money” (or, in your case, throwing good time after bad time). Do you have any reason (aside from hopeful thinking) to believe that things will get better and that you will actually get paid if you leave?
Leave, and drag him to bais din and/or secular court.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantMy father is not frum. Of course I wanted him by my wedding and I wanted him to be happy. On the other hand, most of my guests would have wanted separate seating (as I did at the time).
The compromise: we had separate seating, along with two tables of mixed seating (on the men’s side) for my father and his friends.

I know that you didn’t mean it literally with all the halachic implications, but I think you should think twice before throwing this accusation around, even in jest.
False prophecy is a very serious sin. You wouldn’t accuse someone of idolatry in jest or adultery in jest. I believe this rises to a similar level. Just my humble opinion (for what it’s worth).
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantbut can’t make a decision
It’s really not all that difficult. Ask yourself the following questions:
Can you afford to go on without a paycheck?
Do you love your job so much that you’d do it for free (as a hobby)?
Is the comfort you have at your job going to cause you discomfort regarding the lack of a paycheck (i.e. would your spouse [if any] be unhappy about it? Which discomfort is greater?
Is there some compelling reason to remain there even without a paycheck (i.e. they will provide some valuable experience that you can’t get elsewhere)?
Answer those questions and you’ll see very clearly what you need to do.
And once you move on, make sure you drag his butt to bais din and/or civil court for the back pay that he owes you.

That’s not the lie in question. The issue is that they lied about the fact that Hillary Clinton and Audrey Tomason were there — and before all the hype about the action, yes, I believe people viewing the photo would have believed that they weren’t in the room.

WolfishMusingsParticipantWolf: But it does mean we (as Talmudists) have to act like as if it is a distinct possibility.
To what extent? Do you leave the house anytime your teen daughter has a friend over? Does your wife leave when your son has friends over? Do you leave the house whenever your son and daughter-in-law come over for a meal (heck, she’s an actual erva to you, unlike your daughter’s high-school classmate)? If your mother in law were to start telling a story at the Shabbos table, would you not listen? After all, ain apitropus l’arayos, right? We have to treat the situation as there is a distinct possibility that you might have lascivious thoughts, right?
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantWolf: I already posted that (though I was more discrete with my rebuke).

What did I say in the above post that was self-deprecating? All I said was that I personally don’t listen to a capella during sefirah and that I don’t pass that “chumra” on to anyone else.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantOh, c’mon Wolf. There must have been one experience you had that was head and shoulders above the rest. One tish, where you really got into the zemiros, or one mitzva tanz which brought tears to your eyes.
The answer to your question is no. I’ve never been to a tish or a mitzvah tantz. I sing z’miros in my home, but I assume that doesn’t count for the purposes of this discussion.
I have davened in chassidic shuls of various denominations, but none of them really impressed me over any other.
But even if the answer to your question was yes, so what? Is any branch of chassidus so shallow that it’s defined by the mitzvah tantz or tish? If I’m going to make a decision on which I feel most connected to, shouldn’t it be on the basis of something more than a tish or a mitzvah tantz? Shouldn’t it be based on their philosophy, their approach to yahadus or their feelings about what brings you closer to HKBH? Telling me that I should have a favorite chassidus simply because a chassidic zemer might have brought tears to my eyes is, IMHO, very shallow indeed.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantWhich group of Chasiddus is your favorite, and why?
What horrible things does it say about me if I don’t have a favorite?*
