popa, your second comment contradicts your first comment. In your first comment you said that the OP’s point about rejecting one’s bashert makes no sense, since you cannot reject your basher – otherwise it wasn’t your bashert. But your second comment conceded one’s first marriage could be to someone who wasn’t their bashert.

funnybone: Most NYC public school kids fail (or don’t even take) the Regents. The state doesn’t penalize anyone for failing. The school has the option of leaving the kid back a grade but there’s no state penalties.

“In cases like Lakewood, forcing children to go public would mean that the town would get more funding from the state, and that a $29 million transportation budget to get kids to 140 schools (20,000 routes) would shrink to getting children to maybe 50 schools, each close to a child’s home, at about 3000 routes (assuming 10-15 kids picked up per stop). The budget would be a small fraction of the current total.”

Your math is wrong. Any way you slice and dice it or cut it up, if all the Yeshiva kids switched to public school, it would cost the government hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars more than they currently spend.

Transportation is only a small part of governmental educational costs.

“They will not push the MO schools where children do well on the regents. The target will be places like KJ”

Get your facts straight. The only way they can enforce the “by the book” laws requiring 17.5 hours and teaching evolution, toeiva, and physical ed in KJ, is to equally enforce it in MO schools as well as any other school, like Darchei Torah, that do far better than public schools in Regents and testing despite having only 9 hours of classtime and not teaching many of the required curriculum.

“I disagree with truancy because they’re getting an education.”

You may disagree but the NYS Educational Commissioner said truancy could be invoked.

“But I believe the govt wants their education to help them become contributing members of society, so they will force the issue on these Yeshivos.”

They only want to enforce the “by the book” laws of 17.5 hours, physical ed, toeiva, evolution, etc. If the kids fail the state won’t care as long as they got their technically required curriculum.

that is affordable, both in terms or purchase price (under $100) and ink replacement.

That is usually the trade-off. An inexpensive printer will have higher ink costs, whereas a higher costing printer will often have lower ink costs. This isn’t always the case but it is often the rule.

You could take DY’s advice and get grey market ink. That’ll save a bundle but you need to be sure you aren’t getting ink that’ll ruin the printer.

    CA:

    1. Giving tochacha is a halachic obligation.

    2. In any event, we’re not even talking about giving tochacha to individuals; here we’re talking about crying out against a widespread public trampling of halacha, that’s not only an individual aveira but rather an aveira that the meizid baalas aveiras causes masses of otherwise non-sinners to become sinners b’shogeg (at the least). Among many other aveiras here we’re dealing with machshil es horabim, לפני עור, etc.

We do speak in general terms about how the Reform and Conservatives are very wrong. All the more so we should speak out and decry against the type of sinners this thread is discussing.

Halacha prohibits too much competition. As such, it may be prohibited to, for example, to open a shop too close to another similar shop. This must be adhered to despite goyish American law permitting and encouraging such competition.

That’s true. But my opinion is that it’ll be mostly a bust, as far as yeshivos are concerned, and the 12 months will pass with mostly a whimper.

in reply to: Greater danger to yeshivas being ignored #1669195

This is baloney. The yeshivos have nothing to worry about. They’ll probably be a few miscontents filing suit, but it’ll be a drop in the bucket if even that. It wouldn’t be surprising if the number of suits against yeshivos in that 12 month window can be counted on one or two hands statewide.

And the reason for that isn’t simply because mesira and arkaos prohibit Jews from utilizing the non-Jewish courts, though that is certainly and obviously true. The primary reason it won’t happen is because the underlying issue of the activity being allowed to bring suit upon, namely molestation, is something that has always been a rarity in yeshivos.

The stupid mistake all these so-called advocates make, is assuming yeshivos and rabbonim are like the Catholic Church and priests. There’s no shaychus or remote comparison. The frum velt is so far from that problem (which doesn’t mean it completely doesn’t exist just that it is a rarity) that is laughable when those fools make such a comparison. Even, l’havdil, the Protestants don’t have anywhere close to the extent of the problem as the Catholics. The obvious reason is the crazy and unworkable Catholic clergy policy of celibacy. Which is, essentially, what exaggerates their problem to the extent its proven itself.

They’re not mechyiv to learn Torah, unlike boys, so they have less reason to go to school. Indeed, traditionally Jewish girls didn’t go to school altogether; they learnt at home from their mothers. Beis Yaakov only started about 100 years ago.

We still have parts of that system. Like the traditional Jewish dowry that you speak of, the girl’s father today still usually supports the boy in learning or starting out in marriage or simply setting up the new home. And by some communities in Klal Yisroel today (Chasidim, some Sefardim) the shidduch is more or less arranged, even if it is done at a later age then the tradition you cited.
