February 10, 2019 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm in reply to: Are there fewer Sephardi shuls on the East Coast? #1677142JosephParticipant
I think it’s about 90% of American Jews that are Ashkenazi.
Of course among the frum community the percentage is somewhat lower since the Sephardim don’t have a Reform/Conservative problem/element. (A phenomenon that’s almost exclusively Ashkenazi, and unfortunately represents a majority of American Jewry.)
February 10, 2019 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?๐ผ๏ธ๐คต๐ฐ #1677060JosephParticipantbk613: Are you indicating that discussion is had after the shidduch is made? Or are you indicating that discussion is had prior to the shidduch being finalized and that discussions of monetary considerations are a serious factor as to whether the shidduch will proceed?
February 10, 2019 6:18 pm at 6:18 pm in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?๐ผ๏ธ๐คต๐ฐ #1677021JosephParticipantRY23, why/how does money matter?
bk613, when/how is money (or apartments) discussed?
JosephParticipantHadorah: A long white beard, a nice kapote and a big Homburg hat.
JosephParticipantA small number of tzadikim today have Ruach HaKodesh.
JosephParticipantHow often do you say no to the boys?
JosephParticipantI have no objections to goyim on Halloween wearing a costume of a stereotyped Hasidic couple and I have no problem with Jews wearing blackface on Purim.
JosephParticipantfunnybone: On Aish.com the Orthodox rabbi who first met him seven months ago wrote about how Eddie became frum, started putting on Tefilin and making brochos.
That qualifies as a Baal Teshuva in my book and hence my judgement that he was niftar a tzadik.
JosephParticipantDo you mean if you dispute in secular court any custody or financial matters that were already decided in Beis Din? It is against Halacha for anyone to bring a dispute to secular court.
And what part of the Beis Din “Get decision” are you asking if can be revised?
JosephParticipantfunnybone: From additional details I’ve read elsewhere.
JosephParticipantSounds like he did teshuva at the end of his life and was niftar a tzadik.

JosephParticipantDo Dovid HaMelech, Tanach and the Halacha in Shulchan Aruch were wrong or questionable?
February 7, 2019 5:28 pm at 5:28 pm in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?๐ผ๏ธ๐คต๐ฐ #1676088JosephParticipantknaidlach: What on earth does “at least average looking” even mean? Everyone uses different barometers regarding averages or what constitutes good looking. There’s no two people who necessarily are talking about the same thing when using such ambiguous language.
Furthermore, one shouldn’t be asking about looks altogether. That is very pruste. You’ll see each others looks when you date. Not that looks should be one of the top criteria for a shidduch, but that is a separate issue altogether.
JosephParticipantWelcome back, Ben Levi! We missed you for a couple of years until you joined this thread.
February 7, 2019 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm in reply to: Day camps ; BP vs. Flatbush – price, hours & program #1675986JosephParticipantBP/Chasidish yeshivas and day camps have cost less than Flatbush/Litvish yeshivas and day camps for a long time now. The Flatbush ones tend to have more extracurricular activities/secular subjects, which perhaps accounts for the differences in price.
February 7, 2019 9:35 am at 9:35 am in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?๐ผ๏ธ๐คต๐ฐ #1675808JosephParticipantWinnie, shouldn’t we be complaining about that she phenomenon when people date? You know, before they go out on a date they dress up and make up and do their hair in ways they don’t look like they would on a normal weekday or even on a regular Shabbos.
February 7, 2019 9:34 am at 9:34 am in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?๐ผ๏ธ๐คต๐ฐ #1675807JosephParticipantI’ll bet many people (who engage in this sad picture passing) Photoshop their shidduch picture. Thin herself out, a little taller, airbrush those pimples, etc.
February 7, 2019 9:34 am at 9:34 am in reply to: the demise of a normal sleeping scheduleโฐ๏ธ๐๐๏ธ #1675806JosephParticipantWinnie, and the craziest part is despite that grueling schedule he has a load of time for us in the Coffee Room!
Do you think he even sleeps altogether? I suspect he’s being modest when he says he sleeps for four hours.
JosephParticipantAre colored shirts okay for Shabbos? Why not?
Are shorts okay instead of full length pants? Why not?
Are white sneakers okay instead of black shoes?
February 6, 2019 10:10 pm at 10:10 pm in reply to: the demise of a normal sleeping scheduleโฐ๏ธ๐๐๏ธ #1675725JosephParticipantCTL, are you sure you’re a mere mortal?!
February 6, 2019 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?๐ผ๏ธ๐คต๐ฐ #1675714JosephParticipantAre you kidding? Other than the boy & parents? There are WhatsApp “shidduch” groups with hundreds of people that these photos get plastered all over. And from there forwarded to other groups of hundreds more.
And, as you said, they’re shown off by the boys and girls themselves to friends and others.
February 6, 2019 3:30 pm at 3:30 pm in reply to: Photos & Shidduchim – Appropriate Or Not?๐ผ๏ธ๐คต๐ฐ #1675278JosephParticipantPruste people give and/or ask for a picture.

February 6, 2019 10:34 am at 10:34 am in reply to: Dramatize stories & facts/twisting facts etc #1674961JosephParticipantBill Clinton’s lies make Donald Trump look like a lamud vov tzadik. Chuck Schumer is also up there on top of the lying pyramid,
JosephParticipant“would be considerably less stimulating.”
That’s exactly what’s required. That special stimulating needs to be avoided.
February 5, 2019 1:16 pm at 1:16 pm in reply to: the demise of a normal sleeping scheduleโฐ๏ธ๐๐๏ธ #1674509JosephParticipantCTL, how do you manage on 4 hours/night of sleep? (Especially as a teenager!) Is that seven days a week or do you make up for lost sleep on weekends? You don’t experience tiredness some days of the week?
JosephParticipantZD: You really have no idea what K”H and C”H mean.
JosephParticipant“Why?”
I don’t know whether it’s proper to publicize one’s Mitzvos.
JosephParticipantIt’s a great and wonderful story, no doubt about it.
But I wonder whether the publicity and PR that is being generated about it is proper.
JosephParticipantBeing a sports star isn’t a success. That being one’s life is a monumental failure.
February 5, 2019 12:43 am at 12:43 am in reply to: Should developers be expected to build affordable housing?๐ท๐ปโโ๏ธ๐ท๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐๐๐ข๐ณ #1674150JosephParticipantLocal government can force it by refusing to grant a zoning variance unless the developer agrees to offer low-cost housing. The developer agrees to it since he still makes an overall profit even though he makes less of a profit on the low cost portion.
JosephParticipantWow, aries!! Welcome back! It’s been nearly six long years since we’ve last seen you… Glad to hear you back here!
February 4, 2019 9:21 am at 9:21 am in reply to: What is the best NY State of Health insurance plan? #1673378JosephParticipantAlmost any NYC doctor with a large frum clientele can authenticate that the largest public healthcare plan patients carry is UHC.

February 3, 2019 10:29 pm at 10:29 pm in reply to: Why Won’t My Mother Let Me Get A Shidduch? #1673203JosephParticipantChasidim go out at 17. So do Yidden in Eretz Yisroel. And they live in the same generation as we do.
Where have the Gedolim today said not to get married at 18? I don’t know any consensus of Litvish Gedolim advocating anything like that.
And, no, just because most Litvaks don’t get married at 18 doesn’t mean the Gedolim approve. They’re not protesting can simply mean they feel that, even though they should get married then, their protests will fall on deaf ears.
JosephParticipantAnd why would you think your zivug sheini is your bashert when it very well may have been your zivug rishon that was your bashert.
February 3, 2019 7:55 pm at 7:55 pm in reply to: the demise of a normal sleeping scheduleโฐ๏ธ๐๐๏ธ #1673110JosephParticipantAKuperman: Would you, therefore, agree with me that it is best for society to bring back the candlestick makers and disable the electrical grid?

February 3, 2019 4:52 pm at 4:52 pm in reply to: Is it healthy for yehiva bochurim to learn from a artscroll? #1673001JosephParticipantNeville: Jastrow isn’t that easy to use.
JosephParticipantLightbrite: Both. More Jews have been targeted in Tel Aviv both physically and spiritually than in Paris.
February 3, 2019 9:54 am at 9:54 am in reply to: Is it healthy for yehiva bochurim to learn from a artscroll? #1672797JosephParticipantI didn’t ask about producing, I asked about using a Jastrow.
But since you brought it up, who cares about new academics insofar as Gemorah learning is concerned.
JosephParticipantParis is safer than Tel Aviv.
February 3, 2019 8:00 am at 8:00 am in reply to: Is it healthy for yehiva bochurim to learn from a artscroll? #1672734JosephParticipantDoes anybody in the Yeshiva velt still use a Jastrow?
February 1, 2019 3:56 pm at 3:56 pm in reply to: Why Won’t My Mother Let Me Get A Shidduch? #1672514JosephParticipantDY: What’s the maare makom for delaying marriage, especially if one isn’t doing so for Limud Torah?
February 1, 2019 2:28 pm at 2:28 pm in reply to: Why Won’t My Mother Let Me Get A Shidduch? #1672477JosephParticipantI’m not sure what religion some of the posters here are from, but in my religion we know Shemona Esrei L’Chuppa. And that’s when you should be married by, not when to start thinking about marriage.
February 1, 2019 2:11 pm at 2:11 pm in reply to: Is the MO community concerned with SED? Why the silence? #1672470JosephParticipantfunnybone: It is standard knowledge, and nothing controversial, that the government does not financially or otherwise penalize schools whose students are largely failing. This isn’t even under dispute. If the government did penalize for that, most NYC public schools would be penalized.
The law simply requires a certain curriculum. The law doesn’t require that any percentage of students actually pass the courses in that curriculum. As such, the government cannot go above the law and require what the law doesn’t require.
February 1, 2019 2:05 pm at 2:05 pm in reply to: Is the MO community concerned with SED? Why the silence? #1672451JosephParticipantGenya: They can earn but not quite learn. At least not if you’re speaking of learn in the Jewish sense.
