Now we have to ask what is considered living month-to-month and how much does a person need to live 6 months. The answer is a lot less than people think. All the houses we have nowadays would be considered mansions in the days of the gemara – and that’s even without indoor plumbing, etc.

The problem is that we live in the age of the mega-millions where most people are not happy with what they have. They all say, “if only I won the lottery…”.

Let’s say you did win $100 million in the lottery. Would you be rich? Can you afford a new home? Yes. Can you afford to buy a baseball team? Probably not. Do you need to buy a baseball team? No. Do you need to buy a new house? That is questionable. If Hashem feels that you do need it, and you give maaser, than he will provide you with the means to buy it, but he won’t necessarily give you $100 million.

You say the promise is “wealth”. Pirkei Avos defines “ashir” as “sameach b’chelko”. I’m not sure exactly what your source is other than the pasuk in Malachi which says “bracha ad bli dai” which basically means “a blessing of enough”, why do you define that bracha as “wealth”? And even so, how do you define “wealth”? Should Hashem give you $1 million? $2 million? $100 million?

With the new system it seems that links are no longer blue so this trick doesn’t work, the links are now the same color as the rest of the text but become underlined when you mouseover them. (I don’t like this btw, I would rather be able to see that something is a link without putting my mouse on it)

One thing I would really like in the CR is at the bottom of the list of threads have a link to “more theads” that would give the next 20 threads the same way you can access news stories that way. It is very annoying when trying to find an old thread and I can’t remember which section it’s in but I know that it just slipped off the main page recently.

With today’s wireless mice it might actually be easier to pull the switched mouse trick.

Then there is remote access via something like logmein which might work even better

    goodbye:

I’m bothered by having only 5 “top” news stories, and then having to check through several different lists. I liked having everything in one long (big-worded) list.

    onetimer:

…I would rather scroll down the long list and see what I want to click on! Please go back to old way!

    Rose Valley:

I really don’t like the new layout. Dividing up the news into different sections makes it difficult to access all the headlines….can you possibly make an option to view ALL the news stories on one continuos page, as was the old layout?

The list of all news stories can be accessed by clicking the All News link at the bottom of the top 5 stories

how many ppl do you know are so wealthy they say “enough already” how many frum ppl do you know that are really worth many millions? compared to the amount of yidden giving masser very few

Hashem says he will give “bracha ad bli dai”. You seem to think this means that the person giving the maaser will say “enough already”. I don’t know what your source is for that, but there is a concept of “sameach b’chelko”. Some people can be given millions and it still won’t be enough for them, does that mean that Hashem didn’t fulfill his promise or that the person himself is too absorbed in gashmiyus to recognize the bracha? Being worth millions does not mean wealthy and wealthy does not mean worth millions. Give maaser and Hashem will provide you with more than enough – whether you notice it or not. In today’s economy many people are only now realizing how wealthy they were a few years ago. A few years ago as their businesses were going up they just wanted “more and more” and never said “enough”, today they wish they could have what they had back then without the extra “more and more”

I don’t know if that promise applies to Maaser K’safim. It is written in the pasuk by giving Maaser of produce. Many peopel extend it to Maaser of money as well though.

Also, how do you know it doesn’t work? The promise doesn’t say that as soon as you give the Maaser, more money will magically appear in your bank account. It could be that it takes time. Have bitachon that Hashem will fulfill the promise and eventually he will.

I received this from a member:

The site is still very slow. It seems to freeze my browser for a minute while the page loads. I can’t get to the bottom of the thread to post a comment. It gets to the post by rivkylakewood about screen size and then stops loading. I tried it in 3 different browsers and tried doing hard-refresh and refresh a few times and never got past that post.

I like the new front page layout. You seem to have incorporated the Coffee Room into the nain site more which will hopefully get more people involved. I think you should put the number of comments at the end of the article on the main page with a link because sometimes people want to read stories with a lot of comments. I like the way each comment on the news stories has its own permalink, I don’t remember having that previously. Now I can email someone a link to a specific comment.

The YW logo at top-left is a little cut off (fixed this with shift-F5)

I would also like more than just 2 lines of text for the preview to stories, maybe a 3rd line would add something. For the stories other than the top 5, part of the title sometimes gets cut off also so partial title coupled with only 2 short lines of preview doesnt give much.

It is a nice idea but the question is, will the boy actually use the Shas or will he just use it for games, Internet, etc.

Will he be supervised to make sure he is using it properly and not abusing it.

NJ Public School Principal Asks Parents To Ban Social Networking

    April 28, 2010

The following article is from WCBSTV:

A controversial proposal has students horrified at a Bergen County middle school on Wednesday. The principal is asking parents to join a voluntary ban on social networking.

Anthony Orsini, the principal at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood, sent out an e-mail Wednesday morning asking parents to help him get all of his students off social networks and keep careful track of their text messages.

Since the e-mail has gone out, the principal said the reaction has been generally positive. But the truth will come when individual negotiations take place between parent and child to get them off Facebook.

    Dear BF Community,

In 2010 social networking sites have now become commonplace, and technology use by students is beyond prevalent.

It is time for every single member of the BF Community to take a stand!

There is absolutely no reason for any middle school student to be a part of a social networking site!

5 of the last 8 parents who we have informed that their child was posting inappropriate things on Facebook said their child did not have an account. Every single one of the students had an account.

3 Students yesterday told a guidance counselor that their parents told them to close their accounts when the parents learned they had an account. All three students told their parents it was closed. All three students still had an account after telling their parents it was closed.

Most students are part of more than one social networking site.

Please do the following: sit down with your child (and they are just children still) and tell them that they are not allowed to be a member of any social networking site. Today!

Let them know that you will at some point every week be checking their text messages online! You have the ability to do this through your cell phone provider.

Over 90% of all homework does not require the internet, or even a computer. Do not allow them to have a computer in their room, there is no need.

We as a school can offer guidance and try to build up any student who has been injured by the social networking scourge, but please insist the authorities get involved.

The threat to your son or daughter from online adult predators is insignificant compared to the damage that children at this age constantly and repeatedly do to one another through social networking sites or through text and picture messaging.

I will be more than happy to take the blame off you as a parent if it is too difficult to have the students close their accounts, but it is time they all get closed and the texts always get checked.

Some people advocate that the parents and the school should teach responsible social networking to students because these sites are part of the world in which we live.

I disagree, it is not worth the risk to your child to allow them the independence at this age to manage these sites on their own, not because they are not good kids or responsible, but because you cannot control the poor actions of anonymous others.

Please take action in your on home today.

    Sincerely,

    Anthony Orsini

    Principal, BFMS

Very deep philosophical questions: If I know Joseph, does that count as knowing 1 member or knowing a whole bunch? And what do you count as “knowing”, if I have met someone once or contacted them online outside the CR but never met them in person, does that count as knowing another CR member? What if I saw someone from a distance and someone pointed out to me “that is ploni from the CR”, what if someone told me that a certain poster is his brother?

To tell you the truth, I didn’t realize that d a was referring to a specific moment of silence, I thought he was just asking in general so I made a joke out of it. There is definitely a concept of stopping to think about certain things (one of the yetzer hara’s biggest weapons is making us too busy to stop and think) but I don’t know whether or not a public moment of silence has any basis in Judaism which is probably what d a was asking.

As we are now between Rosh Chodesh Iyar and Lag Ba’Omer (La’Omer ?), I think that everyone agrees that it is a period of mourning.

That said, there are those who allow listening to recorded music as long as it’s not live. That is probably a minority among the Yeshiva World crowd. I think that there are 3 levels:

    1) those who listen to any recorded music

    2) those who listen to Accapela

    3) those who don’t listen to any music

There are some in between levels of people who listen to accapela provided that it is “Dveykus” type songs that are uplifting spiritually but do not lead to dancing or kallus rosh. Perhaps some of these people will even listen to regular recorded music if it is these type of songs.
