Telegrok gets the award for quote of the day. I was in hysterics when I read that!
Post of the year contest anyone?
That’s a request to Joseph and squeak to find the thread because I’m too lazy at the moment
August 5, 2010 12:36 am at 12:36 am in reply to: Why does YWN delete direct quotes from Iggros Moshe? #691962YW Moderator-42ModeratorYes, you are missing seichel. There are many aspects of Torah that should not be discussed in a public setting such as the Coffee Room.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorThere are 2 distinct questions here:
1) Is wearing shorts chukas hagoyim?
2) Is it tznius?
I don’t know what constitutes chukas hagoyim so I can’t comment on that but I do know that my Rebbeim hold that wearing shorts in public is not b’geder hatznius. In a private setting, even a very public type of private setting such as a camp, this may be different even if there are women around. But, they are definitely very against wearing shorts on the streets of NY, even if you are exercising. In the gym is another story, but on the way to the gym, wear long pants.

In most cases you will not get a prime number when multiplying a few primes and adding 1. The exception is when one of the primes is 2, otherwise if you multiply a few primes and add 1 you will get an even number.
Am I to understand this as saying that 2 * any prime + 1 is a prime number?
Is 63 really a prime number? 63 = 1 + 2 * 31
What I meant is if you multiply all the primes in order from p1 to pn and add one you will get a prime.

Or knitting. Or sewing. Or washing dishes. It takes me through boring household chores when my husband is at minyan, learning, doing other household chores and the kids are sleeping.
Let me chime in here in place of your good friend mosherose 🙂
You should be listening to a shiur or saying tehillim while doing these activities. It is assur to watch TV, period. Then again, you have no olam habba so shiurim and tehillim are worthless to you. <end sarcasm>

YW Moderator-42ModeratorThere are an infinite number of prime numbers. If you take a bunch of prime numbers and multiply them by each other and add 1 you will get a prime number (2*3+1=7, 2*3*5+1=31). So therefore if, theoretically, there was a finite amount of primes (p1, p2, p3,… pn), and you multiplied them all by each other and added one (p1*p2*p3…*pn+1) you would get a new one so therefore it must be infinite.

YW Moderator-42ModeratorWhy would someone who doesn’t listen to music be listening to YWN Radio during the 3 weeks? The only people who are listening to it are those who do listen to recorded music anyway so why should YW deprive these people of a great source of good Jewish music?
The only question I can see here is for those people in between who listen to Acapella. The question is why doesn’t YW provide that. I assume that they didn’t bother making any changes to the YWN Radio because that would cost money and would take away from the Moderators’ salaries.

YW Moderator-42ModeratorHello Kitty wrote, “I wasnt planning on buying most of those cds anyway” (bold added by me)
If you weren’t planning on buying any of them, then you might have a heter (I’m not paskening, just saying that there do seem to be heterim out there). But, you said “most” implying that “some” you might actually buy. If this is the case then you have a much bigger shaila if you would have paid for a CD but instead are copying it. As oyveykidsthesedays said, you have to be very honest with yourself. This is a very hard thing when there is a strong negia to save money. Kol kula tzricha bedika!
I haven’t read the licenses recently, but the way I understand it the way apushatayid explained it, that owning a CD gives you the right to use it once at a time. You can listen to it on your CD player at home at 8:00, in the car at 9:00, and on your iPod at 10:00. But it cannot be played twice at the same time. If just one person will be using the CD then it’s no problem to make many copies as long as you are listening to one at a time. It might be a problem if a family buys a CD and one family member is listening to it in the car, while another listens on the computer. I once heard b’shaim a posek that for a family living to together they don’t have to worry about this if you can reasonably assume that most of the time it will only be listened to once, and if not, ask yourself if the family would otherwise buy a 2nd CD or not. Think of it as a book, if 2 family members want to read a book they would take turns. In some cases they may buy a 2nd copy of the book but in other cases they won’t. If you feel that you wouldn’t buy a 2nd copy of the CD then you might have a heter to have 2 family members listening at once in different places. If one gets married or goes to yeshiva the situation may be different. In the case of a book, if someone goes away to yeshiva, if he takes the book with him then his family will no longer have access to it so there is a good chance that he (or the family) would buy a 2nd copy.
Either way, I see the this as 2 shailas:
1) is it gezaila?
2) is it a violation of dina d’malchusa dina?

YW Moderator-42ModeratorThe CR has been doing that also. I find it very annoying that it only gives you the last comment. I assume this is the same bug with the “#” in the URL that somehow messes up the redirecting so that it only gives you the last post in the CR or the comments on the main page.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorInteresting, it does that to me too now, it gives mje only the comments and not the story. I assume this has something to do with the way it redirects URLs. I guess they should look into this. I usually click on the story link and not on the “opinions” link so I don’t have this problem.

Kashrus of Worms In Flesh of Fish
By: Rabbi A. Margolin
The tzibbur has recently been flooded with literature pertaining to a recent tumult in reference to the presence of parasitic worms in fish. The following is a synopsis of several shiurim that Hagaon Harav Yisroel Belsky Shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath and senior posek of the OU has delivered on the inyan.
[these are shrimp like creatures]
The Gemara, as interpreted by Tosfos, says that the worms that are found in the stomach of a fish are forbidden but the worms found in the flesh of the fish are permitted. The Bais Yosef in Yoreh Deah in Siman 84 says that the reason the worms in the stomach are assur is because perhaps they came into the fish as fully developed worms and thus were included in the issur of sheretz hamayim [the Pri Megadim paskens this way as well]. This is in contrast with the worms that entered the fish that did not have the status of sheretz hamayim. In other words, when one observes worms in the stomach he does not know if it is mutar or assur. The Shulchan Aruch rules clearly that worms found in the flesh of the fish are always permitted. It is possible that Chazal knew that worms that were sheretz hamayim would not enter the flesh of the fish.
[Even those that disagree with the Chavos Daas would agree in this case, since minei gavli as will soon be explained.]
It is important to note that the Shulchan Aruch, when allowing consumption of worms in the flesh of fish does not differentiate between worms; the heter is a blanket heter. Had there been a limitation on types of worms the Shulchan Aruch would have indicated as such. This especially identified in the time of the Mechaber. Futhermore, there is no way for a lay person without expensive equipment to determine which worm he is looking at; whether it is the anisakis or any other type of worm. If we were to forbid the anisakis, then we are forbidding all worms, contrary to the psak of the Shulchan Aruch!
One writer suggested that the psak of the Shulchan Aruch permitting the worms is limited to a specific parasite that enter the fish from the outside and is microscopic. This is simply absurd! Had the heter been limited to one type of worm then the Shulchan Aruch would have said so.
Others expressed concern that once we know that it is the same worm from the stomach that is migrating to the flesh and it is established that worms in the stomach are assur then how can those same worms subsequently become mutar in the flesh. However, since the Bais Yosef explained that the issur is because it is a safek there is no issue with them once they migrated to the flesh as previously explained.
It is noteworthy to mention that a recently publicized letter which argues that anisakis should be assur is actually the most convincing the proof that it is mutar. This is because all the reasoning stated therein to prove that the worms are assur, would also apply equally to all other worms found in fish rendering all worms in fish assur. However this cannot be as Chazal clearly states that they are all mutar. Hence, the only possible alternative and consequently the truth, is to say that the reasoning is faulty and that they are all mutar. [The fault in the reasoning should be easily understood by anyone who read the forgoing material, but whether one discovered the flaw or not is immaterial as no amount of reasoning in the world could lead to an absurd conclusion – that the psak of the Shulchan Aruch permitting worms is rendered obsolete].
In conclusion, the psak of the Shulchan Aruch, permitting those worms found in the flesh of the fish, applies to the anisakis worm just as it applies to any other worm.

YW Moderator-42ModeratorI think the whole concept of washing feet, in regards to the halachos of washing “panav, yadav, v’raglav” on Shabbos/Yom Tov are only because in those days they used to walk barefoot and there was a lot of dust on their feet. I don’t know if these halachos would be the same today. I would assume that a woman washing her husband’s feet might be the same concept.

YW Moderator-42ModeratorThey could lock it if they want to
This would obviously be bad business for them. This isn’t a private house, it’s a public place where they offer Wifi for their customers. If they locked it, it would defeat the whole purpose. They would have to give the password to all their customers which would just be a pain, and you could get it too anyway so what would they gain other than someone having to come in in order to use it the first time. I think that their business model is that they assume that if they offer Wifi, many people will come into the store to use it and might buy from them. People in the parking lot might also buy from them. The fact that you don’t plan on buying is the issue. If there is a chance that in all the times that you use it, one time you might come in and buy a coke, then it is worth it for them. It might even be worth it for them if you refer them a customer by telling a freind that you use their parking lot. Even though your friend might be Jewish, he still might buy a coke. Or he might refer a friend…
In terms of using their bandwidth, it is a public place where anyone can, and is encouraged, to log on so I assume they have somewhat good service to handle all this bandwidth. If not, then their customers would be experiencing slow connection even without you. I doubt that one extra person on the network makes that big of a difference. Feel free to argue this last point.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorIt seems that they have held off on fixing the CR posting issues until after they have fixed the rest of the site. Stay tuned for your edit button…
YW Moderator-42ModeratorI think that this link works better: http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/news_cat.php?cat=all
YW Moderator-42ModeratorLet’s look at this from a different angle, you are assuming that almost everyone gives maaser. This might be true to some extent, but does everyone give maaser right away? Is everyone midakdek to make sure they are giving at least a tenth? Does everyone give it to the cause that it should be given to (aniyay ircha kodmin, etc)? Does everyone give it with a smile? Perhaps (I’m just guessing here) the bracha only applies to those who give maaser b’leiv shalem following the halacha exactly without cutting any corners, etc.
And getting back to the topic of this thread – segulos. Giving maaser seems to be a segula for “wealth”. Does this segula work? Does it require proper bitachon and davening as well in order to work? Maybe it only works if you really believe in it b’leiv shalem. Many people claim that they are big ba’alei bitachon when it comes to these types of things just as an excuse to have a tayna against Hashem. If you have true bitachon than this question probably won’t bother you.

YW Moderator-42Moderatorchesed:
lets say someone makes a million dollars and doesn’t say enough and wants ten million dollars, why isn’t the person making ten million dollars??
lets say someone makes ten million dollars and doesn’t say enough and wants a hundred million dollars, why isn’t the person making a hundred million dollars??
OK, let us make a distinction between the word “want” and “need”. People might know what they want (millions of dollars) but they don’t know what they need. Only Hashem knows what a person truly needs. But in reality, everyone should only want what they need, anything extra would probably just make them more unhappy (marba nichasim marba daaga) and would also possibly take away zchusim in Olam Habba. I’m not saying that anything more than bread and water is extra, some people need more, some need less, everyone is created differently and Hashem knows everyone’s feelings, emotions, needs. As wolfishmusings said above, high income does not equal wealth, it is different for everyone. Some peopel need to live in a fancy house and drive a fancy car, it is part of their teva and Hashem knows this. Others might be just as happy to have that extra money in the bank to pay their monthly bills.
The pasuk says “poseach es yadecha umasbia l’chol chai ratzon” Hashem gives everyone his “ratzon”. Assuming this is referring to the person’s ratzon and not Hashem’s, this means that Hashem gives a person what the person wants, but we know that not everyone has what they want. But, that is only with our limited understanding, Hashem knows what we really “want” in the long run even though we don’t know. If you think about it carefully (which I doubt chesedname has the ability to do on this subject) “want” and “need” are really the same thing and we, with our limited understanding of the big picture, don’t fully know what it is that we need/want. Hashem does know, and he gives that to us.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorEmail response:
Hi. in the feedback thread it said that if we can not post a reply because the page doesn’t load all the way (which means that the post box doesn’t show up) then we should email a mod.
I just wanted to ask if anyone else is having this issue- that the entire
site does not load on Mozilla Firefox. I can get onto the site but all I can see is a few words on the left hand side and that is it. No articles or any other info and it def does not look anything like the updated site. Is there a reason for this?
Thanks a million for a great site!!
