The sad reality is that the men use the get as leverage against the women and the women in turn use the kids as leverage against the men. all sides run to the beis din they feel will be most sympathetic to their cause, and not necessarily because it is a beis din with a reputation for expertise in halacha (this is true in monetary cases as well). the concept of toanim further escalates the situation into a circus where nobody is interested in the halacha, just sticking it to the other party and drags the case on for as long as they can, to further stick it to the other party. as a tzibbur we made our bed, now we have to lay in it, as filthy as it is.

they dont make money from the machine. they make money from the sale of the k-cups (coffee, iced tea and anything they put in those little cups these days). is why you see advertised in every pharmacy “free meters” (whether for diabetes or other home testing requirements). the money is in the supplies, not the machine.

I am not looking to pry personal information, and dont really care WHERE you are coming from. Unless you are flying in from Canada or Mexico it is likely you are flying in from South America, Europe, Middle East or Asia, or even Africa. on trans atlantic/pacific flights you can not order kosher food?

Since when is coffee described as a food? (granted I know some bachurim who consider coffee one of the 4 basic food groups). I’m not much of a flyer but I would imagine travelers can still get coffee on the plane, especially an international flight.

“but much of this thread seems to be posts from Ashkenazim who want to make themselves feel righteous for defending the kavod of Sephardim.”

I dont see much in the way of defending kavod sefardim in this this thread. Looks to me like there is much in the way of defending the kavod of two decidely non sefardic communities from the vitriol of someone hell bent on sowing seeds of divisiveness under the guise of defending the honor or the Rav Z’l.

You know this as a fact or are you just parroting the irresponsible opening comment of this thread that is every much the bizayon hatorah as the NY Post articles about the Rav Z’l.

The Rav Z’l was a true oheiv yisroel, and there are those sowing seeds of discord using his kavod hatorah as the excuse. That is the true bizayon.

The bizayon hatorah here, is the stupidity coming from the anonymous know it alls who determined that they know everything, and then decide they have license to besmirch whole communities, in the name of kavod hatorah.

attack the school, its personnel and way of doing things all you want. at the end of the day, if you disagree with their educational philosophies, and their methods of carrying them out, dont send your kids to the school. if you do, you have no one to blame, but yourself.

Klal yisroel has always had very capable leaders. We still do. How many willing followers do we have? Once upon a time when a Rav said something it was respected. Now his words are parsed by every two bit “scholar” who isnt afraid to state his or her opinion on the subject, anonymously of course, on forums such as this.

“Isn’t it absurd that many have to turn to publications like Mishpacha to gain insight.”

Yes it is. Their local shul Rav is almost always more approachable, knowledgeable and likely comes out more than once a week. Asei licha Rav.

“Charedi journalists can only second guess the appropriate charedi stance.”

I’m not a jornalist, I dont know what they do or dont know or how they formulate the positions they take in their articles, if they in fact articulate positions and not merely report news. Will leave it to those more knowledgeable than me to answer this one.

“Our only connection to Gedolim are the pictures printed in the Hamodia and on various tzedaka campaigns.”

Why do you need a connection to a “gadol” or “gedolim”, get close to a local Rav and discuss all your nagging questions with him. Of course, if you live in the same locale as a “gadol” then try to discuss your questions directly with him.

More generally, why do you feel gedolim must editorialize about every “issue” the general public deems “important”? They are not news editors.

Rebbetzin Zahava Braunstien a’h related a story that took place with the Bobover Rebbe, Rav Shlomo Z’l that directly relates to the topic at hand.

The story goes that a certain chassid started relationships with people other chassidim considered “not appropriate”. They tried to dissuade him of these relationships and when unsuccessful, approached the Rebbe who advised them to let him look into the matter and deal with it as necessary. On the appointed day, this chasid came into the Rebbe and they discussed the importance of good chaverim in general and these chaverim and the nature of these chaverim specifically… after some discussion in which the chassid tried to explain his association with these chaverim, something which the Rebbe disagreed with, the Rebbe took another approach. The Rebbe asked him, (of course he said it in yiddish, I am paraphrasing in english), tell me please, what does “usmager” mean. The chassid replied with a blank stare. Again, “Nuuuuu what does usmager mean?” Again, the same blank stare. Once again the Rebbe asked, “usmager, come on, you daven shmone esrei three times a day, in the bracha of vilamalshinim, we say vihazeidim, miheira siaker, usishaber, usmager…tell me please what does usmager mean”. The chassid replied, I dont know. To which the Rebbe replied, in truth I dont either know, but, from his chaverim in the passuk I know it isnt something good. He got the message.

“What is the point of the aufruf? To me it seems like a huge waste of time, effort, stress, and money.”

I’d like to suggest that because it IS all of those things, the aufruf was invented by the kallahs family as a small measure of revenge for all the effort, sterss, time and money demanded by the boys side of the girls family.

    GAW.

Rav Moshe Z’l writes in a teshuva that one need not give his wife a get if she wont cover her hair. However, nowhere in the teshuva does he posit it is because of the importance of shalom bayis. I wish I could cite the teshuva or at the very least where it can be found. Hopefully someone else will find it sooner than me (I have no intention to look for it until sunday at the earliest).

Also, your assumption(?) or is it assertion from the sotah is way off base. The gemara is clear about the importance of shalom between a husband and wife, and it cites the fact that hashem allows his name to be erased, not the fact that he permits pritzus in the beis hamikdash. May I suggest Rashi on the passuk in chumash who explains why we do that. Also see how he translates the word “uncover”.

As for what hashem deems more important, I wont be so presumptious to make such a claim.

“First of all, not all families follow the man-breadwinner woman-homemaker model. It used to be that more yeshivish families were MORE likely to use this model, and now, as more men are being encouraged to learn full-time, even yeshivish women are taking on responsibilities of parnassah. Therefore, the clothing may in many situations be funded by the woman’s work, not the man’s.”

1: What I was referring to was “Dad, can I use your credit card to buy a new whatever”, as a parent in that situation he should say as long as it conforms to this families standards of tznius, if not, it is going back. The mother of the family has a right to the same. I am not getting into family dynamics where one spouse uses his or her position as the breadwinner to withold purchases from the other. Tznius is the least of this couples problems.

“Oh, and also, what is this about the husband being responsible for the spiritual atmosphere of the family?”

A husband is obligated to say something when his wife or children are not dressed in accordance with halacha. If he doesnt, he is shirking his responsibility as a husband and a father.
