OK, back on track. If the place is a favorite of the Prospect Park / Park Slope crowd, and is kosher, I’m pretty sure its going to be a real scene. Not a teen hangout, not a place where the lights & sirens crowd goes, but a real scene none-the-less.

Think Matisyahu, as opposed to Lipa.

Lets see what the first CR report has to say

Hmm. So it would appear that this idea will need to be a grass roots effort after all.

Not a problem. Grass roots efforts don’t yield instant results, but they do get people thinking and talking.

    OK, Bomb.. lets begin:

1 – When I compared chometz to toevia, I was refering to the fact that both carry the penalty of korias (the penalty for the transgressions, when bais din cannot carry out the sentence.

2 – of course I know the outside world influences me. So I keep a safe distance. Not hide under a rock, but at the same time, I don’t cozy up to the suburban family man, with wife, 2.2 kids and a dog either. Those who don’t believe in the torah are to be dealt with from a safe distance. Makes no matter what rule you’re breaking.

3 – I didn’t think I was bringing R’ Levin into the picture. The “good govt” I was referring to is the one that keeps pur budget in check, crime under control, and the trains running on time (ok, that I could compromise on).

And for the record, I don’t give 2 hoots about “social services” as things like welfare, food stamps and sec 8 (or hud, if you live in NJ) only hurt me, as the collectors of these things cause the prices of goods and rent to spike for working stiffs like me.

And no, I don’t mean the single mom, or out of work dad. I mean the folks who drive a leased car and pay for tuna dip with a Benefit Card.

So, if a candidate is all for throwing around $$$ to social services, he’s not speaking to me at all.

What you’re implying is essentially the position of the folks in EY that don’t take a penny from the Govt. After all, its tainted money, and by extension, that taints everything it touches.

Personally, I have no problem with that whatsoever. I may not want XYZ as my kid’s schoolbus driver, and certainly not as a son-in-law, but do I really care if the governor or mayor or president has a lifestyle that runs counter mine? Not really.

Because when you really get down to the nuts and bolts of it, toevah is not that much different than eating chometz on pesach? Yet we don’t go running and screaming when a candidiate does that.

So (IMHO) its less to do with kovod hatorah, and more to do with social confort. I tell myself and my family, we are us (frum, bnei torah) and they are not. So it matter not one wit what the candidate does on his personal time, or who he associates with (unless its fringe nuts that pose a threat to my safety, like neo-nazis, which is not the case here).

Will this person run a good govt? Give him the job. Period. I don’t have to advertise who I voted for, and I certainly don’t need to hold press conferences. Let me hear what the positions are in the issues that matter to the city, and I’ll make a choice.

I was told the female metabolism changes after childbirth, so all things being exactly equal (diet, excercise, ect) the wife will gain more than the husband.

On the flip side, many women work like mad to lose the weight (and succeed) yet men gain it and keep it.

Dunno, but I’m going to try and swing by either this or next Sunday. Its got a OK hechser, so my guess is, its run by a Chabad’sker. Smith and 3rd is only a few blocks from the Prospect Park Chabad house, so if in doubt, you can check with them to see if the place is under their watch as well.

    Poppa –

I sort of agree that the “age gap” problem exists, but I think its because boys feel intimitaded by girls that are not 5-6 years their junior. Were the boys able to earn a living, they would feel more comfortable with girls their own age. At the same time, if for whatever reason a boy did not choose to get married at 22-23 and decided to wait till 24-25, he would feel on equal footing with a girl his own age (and not compete for the 19-20 year old, leaving the 25 y/o girl out in the cold.

I’m really reluctant to let the phrase “singles event” go by without a ripple. The meeting I have in mind would be very much like a weekend convention, with parents and mediators (again, I’m trying to resist the word “shadchanim” as they are partially to blame for the mess we now face).

But the biggest advantage to an “open market” would be that people would realize that despite their “chesroinos” (lack of $$$, lack of movie star looks, lack of brand name yichus), they still have loads to offer, if they exceed in other areas. And I say that because, all of a sudden, you realize that what the “market” may consider a looming black x on your ratings chart is not nearly as bleak as it looks on paper.

If I (all 40+ years of me) were to reduce myself to an 8×11 sheet of paper, I’d look as exciting as a nursing home menu. But in the 3D world, I’m somewhat more marketable.

The goal is to level the playing field and not be manipulated by the board masters.

And Thanks, Pascha – I try to earn that title each and every day!

Need to lose weight for shiduchim

1st stop should be the thread above, which had loads of advice.

2nd – Poppa is right; think of yourself as being in the shidduch market, and see how fast your husband notices the new you.

3rd – sort of like Minyan Gal’s idea, but instead, pick an activity you cannot do now (like walk 6 flights of steps without stopping) and try to meet that goal within 6 months.

Winter is coming, so outdoor excercise is going to be a challenge. Stairs in a hospital is an ideal place, as its safe, well lit and warm / dry. (forget the gym, its too condusive to chit-chat).

Start with a small goal, don’t race your way to the floor you set as a goal, and above all esle, portion control. Denying youeself the foods you love will not work. Eat, but eat with a cheshbon.

While I’m not on-line quite that long, I see one major difference between the AOL group you describe and the frum, on-line communiity of today. That group was seeking people who are like-minded, and the net brought them together. Today, many of us share the same ideas, but for one reason or another (gender, family, ect) need to keep our ideas off the public record.

For example, I feel that boys should be ready to work, shortly after marriage. But if my kids decide to be the sit and learn type, my rants will only embarress them, and my spouse / mechutonim to boot.

Or if I have some really good cc cookie receipes, that ms. 19 year old, still in sem, would like to have, that’s ok if its shared on-line, and in a moderated site. But very NOT ok if its swapped in Vegas.

And for the record, YNW is the only CR I visit. Mods (and the CR group)keep things on a fair playing field, and I don’t need the trouble the unmonitored net can bring.

We have our share of busy moments here at the widget factory I work for. But right now, the paperwork dept is a bit slow, so I have more time to CR.

Besides, if you want to really fall into a deep sleep, try standing in a store, where the only things on display are of ZERO interest to you (for me, yesterday, this was linen). Would love to see how the same paper digs its way out of the hole, now that R’ Zweibel has been proven right. Is Agudah necessarily THE mouthpiece of Orthodox Judaism? Perhaps not.

When to give up? When they are shoveling dirt onto a person, at that point, I would say, its truly too late.

But prior to that, there is always hope. Look at this week’s parsha; things looked pretty bleak for Hagar and her son, but at the last moment, her eyes were “opened up” (meaning, she saw a source of help that she had missed before) and all went uphill from there.

In specific regards to shidduchim, I heard in the name of a prominent Rosh Yeshiva (can’t recall the name, so I’ll leave it off):

Every one has a zivug, and it “belongs” to one person in particular. The trick is “finding” the person. But once the person “gives up” on “finding” the zivug, another person can come along and “claim” the zivug for themselves.

Bottom line.. NEVER give up hope.

They may have “filters” of a sort, but it will still let our yeshiva / bais yaakov eyes see all sorts of things they don’t see at home.

Many of these kids do not have televisions, and on-line (even the library filtered kind ) gives them a real shock.

And no, I don’t have my kids walk around blind-folded. But seeing the stuff that can get thru the filter, and un-mod controlled chat rooms, no, that’s not a good diet.

All I’m saying is, watch what your kids are doing. Even in the library.

Forget about the blessing from senior managment. This needs to be a grass roots effort. The mainstream is already bogged down with too many layers, so only the loudest (and richest) get heard.

Once people are clear about what they truly want, the layers will peel away, and the path will be smooth as glass.

True, most Lakewood boys do get married within a year, but at what age, and to what age counterpart? And what do they plan to do once their primary source of cash (wife or parents) decide Dayeinu?

Hard to judge what the value of a yehei shemei rabbah and omain is from “once-in-a-while” people, but I’ll bet its way up there.
