Litvishe…..you are assuming that the metric with which we measure humanity’s “advancement” technology. As if we needed to reach “iPhone” status, and it took us X amount of years when it should have taken us only Y amount of years. That entire premise is erroneous. You can’t take an existing new accomplishment and use it as the basis to measure the accomplishment itself. For example: say you are an inventor, and you discover diodes, wildly helpful in shrinking electronics to handheld size. They’ve never been known before, you are the first to have ever done it. You can’t be asked why it took so long because there’s no one else who has done it. How long should it have taken? Discovery and invention cannot be compared to itself. The only possible way to ask that question would be if there was an exact replica of our world and circumstances down to the last grain of sand, and THEY came up with all of this much faster than us…..but that doesn’t exist. So using “well it took only 25 years for an iPhone to be made, if the world is trillions of years old we should be much farther” as some sort of proof of a young earth , falls short.

Why be limited to what we think we “know” is coming? After the snow debacle some years ago, we “knew” there was another storm coming and busses and trains all across NY were shut down. We got like 6 flakes and 4 raindrops. It was a farce. Better to always have a state of readyness, than be caught unprepared.

Randomex, as I commented in the other thread…….that’s always the answer to any and every aspect of our lives, yet somehow we all seem perfectly ok with going to work and making a living. Want to know who the most famous preppers are? Noah…….Yaakov Avinu…..Yosef……..just to name a few. Did they supplant Torah with prepping? Surely not. Each had disasters to face and took appropriate actions BEFOREHAND. (Yes yes…Hashem TOLD Noah to prepare….got it) so let’s be consistent: Hishtadlus in finances? Hishtadlus in health matters? Hishtadlus for disasters.

And BTW, who says the prepping you do has to be for a specific cataclysmic event? Hurricanes Katrina…Sandy….Hugo…all local (relatively) disasters. With power outages for days on end, fuel pumps not working…..dont you want to be able to help yourself AND your neighbors? Remember that giant snowstorm that paralyzed NYC some years ago. It’s a no brainer. Yeah….people take it to extremes. Maybe I do to a little, but it pays off in spades. Many frum Jews work in Manhattan, ever consider what you would do if your normal methods to get home were disrupted? How would you reach your family? These are things I think about…..and plan for….and IMHO, so should everyone.

“His exact words were, “There is nowhere to escape from Hashem. You need no plans”

Terribly silly argument IMHO. You go to work, don’t you? To make money to live. Under the above premise, we should never do anything for parnassah. But we don’t rely on miracles, do we? Prepping to me is just like parnassah, not going crazy building bunkers and the like, but also not relying on miracles. You put smoke detectors in your home? You have (hopefully) health insurance? Car insurance? Why? Isn’t it all in Gods hands anyway? Hard times come and go, periods of strife and danger wax and wane, I put my hishtadlus in. And if it’s all for nought, (sprained ankle theory) well……my arms are too short to box with God and it is what it is.

There are many resources available online. But one of my most important preps has been knowledge. I have amassed books and guides on a wide variety of topics from security strategies to self sustaining food supplies to knot making. I think it’s one of my best preps. Sure you could stockpile things, but after a while you’d run out. Knowledge never really expires, or runs out. And someone, somewhere, at some time will need the knowledge that you possess. So while I do have inventory of various and sundry items, I have a healthy supply of knowledge too. As for combining prepping with Judaism……there is no guarantee that times will be smooth till moshiach, on the contrary…..they’re supposed to be rough, very rough. Personally, I have always valued independence, the ability to be productive and to thrive without the input or participation of other people. It’s not always possible, but it’s a goal.

I would imagine it would be airline specific, no doubt there’s a checklist somewhere that covers this, like the “after death checklist” or something. I would imagine though, that the co-pilot takes command. You also may or may not be able to remove the pilot from his seat safely (if thats where he died). I suppose they should declare an emergency and get routing to the nearest airport that can handle the type of aircraft they’re on. Cant land an A380 at Teterboro after all…. As for believing that everything you say is true about this matter…well….we really have NO idea if your claimed professions is in fact really your profession. So…… we’ll probably take that with a grain of salt too.

IMHO, RTMA is a good “middle of the road” school for “middle of the road” kids. That is: kids that will need a lot of help or services may not do as well as they can compared to other schools. Academically, (torah studies too) you will get out what you put in. Like all schools they have Rebbis and teachers that run the gamut from superb to “maybe you should consider another career”. It seems to have somewhat less of a problem with misbehavior (bullying, alcohol) but there are issues there. Good luck with your school search.

“Name Withheld” We’re never going to agree Dave Green your friend list has rabbi ‘ s on it so your just staying loyal to your people and that’s fine bc we all know you only care about yourselves and your people. That’s the whole point handle your own business with your own money and people wouldn’t have any problems. It’s all about money hoarding and seeing yourselves above people the chosen ones and you wonder why people dislike you all around the world you are war mongers with all the money and we’re all tired of it. I went to predominately jewish high school and been to friends bar/bat mitzvahs but the hadidics make them look bad and they know it…

Sorry Health, you are incorrect. For the purposes of ABG interpretation normal hco3 is 22 to 24. Sometimes you can use 26. No one uses 28, ever. If they do, they are wrong too. Aside from this, any movement of hco3 will be an attempt to correct the acidosis and would be considered “partial” compensation. The fact it has moved out of norm means its a definite compensation but only considered partial because the pH remains acidotic.

See: Clinical Application of Blood Gases, Shapiro, Harrison, Cane, Templin. (THE final word on all things ABG related (even the mention of “the Shapiro book” inspires awe)

Principles of Anatomy and Physiology Tortora, Grabowski.

Clinical Application of mechanical Ventilation, Chang.

These are references I value somewhat more than Tyler Junior College.

PS, ice or ice water for cooling is not recommended because one of the functions of skin is temp regulation. After a burn, all functions of the skin that has been burned are compromised. You may actually freeze the cells in the layers below and give yourself frostbite.

    Ironic, no?

Among the many credentials I hold, one of them is ABLS. Coupled with my work experience I humbly offer the following. Health IS correct in saying that Silvadene has no intentional analgesic properties. it is simply an anti-bacterial preparation. If you have applied it and found that you no longer have pain, it is likely that you wouldnt have had the pain even without it. the purpose of applying an anti-infective agent on a burn is because your usual defenses against infection (your skin) has been compromised. Almost and topical antibacterial prep will be effective at this. the reason Silvadene is popular is that because it works across a broad variety of organisms. (not to be confused with “broad-spectrum” antibiotics) “Mycin’s” target most “common” organisms that normally live on the skin, so its a bit narrower in scope.

That said, here is some advice from just another post on the internet. Anything more that a minor (un-blistered) burn on the hands or feet should bee seen by a physician. Any burn that encircles and limb should go to an ED, EVERY TIME!! Chemical burns should go to an ED, EVERY TIME!! This includes things like that horrible Israeli oven cleaning product that should be illegal.

In general, minor burn treatment focuses first on stopping the burning process. For fat/grease/oil based burns this can be difficult as fat is hydrophobic and can still be hot enough on the surface of the skin even after a quick rinse. As for covering them afterward, it depends on the severity and area of the burn. Remember, burned skin offers you no protection from organisms outside the body. Even a minor burn can get horribly infected. Hygiene, hygiene, hygiene……

    Some general rules on dressings:

1)If dressed, a non-adherent pad will allow drainage of fluids from the burn and still not stick when you change the dressing

    2) Change the dressing if the burn is weeping. Nothing fosters bacterial growth quite like bodily fluid festering outside the body

3)Most any topical anti-bacterial will work, consult a physician if you should be putting any on at all.
