I have also heard that it is a segula for a long life. I do not know what the source is. Is there any room left on Har Hazeisim? I would love to be buried there! What would that cost? Can I pay money down and then pay in installments? Maybe I will have a bank subsidize the rest

funnybone, you may have healthy self esteem but you aint smart. No one said that losing a singing contest should shatter your self esteem. The issue is that many times people, especially kids, have shaky self esteem. And if they are put down, especially in public, it can make them feel very little of themselves.

Being put down, made fun of, bullied, etc are catalysts for low self esteem. Obviously, it stupid to value yourself based on such a thing, but people are not so smart. Especially emotionally.

A good point was just made. Think of the guy/kid who loses. What does he feel like? Worthless. Yes, he went on of his own volition, but does that make it permissible? Does that make it right? We should be about building people up not tearing them down! And everyone other than the winner gets publicly ripped apart.

The whole thing is all about going ga ga about some guys tone range and shaming another fellow about how his voice is painful or needs work. shaming publicly? check. Tearing down youngsters self esteem? check. kissing up to the TV world? check. Destroying our values? check. Horrible chinuch? check. Bitul zman? check. Promoting narcissism? check. Not Jewish? check.

Are there any redeeming merits to this un-Jewish thing? NO

Anyone who uses the word “hate” about words of Torah is a wicked heretic. No, I am not exasperating one iota. If you believed that every word in Torah comes straight from Hashem, you would not dare speak with such wicked brazenness. No excuses of what is really meant are acceptable.

This guy WIY has it all wrong. He seems to come from some very “greasy” background at least from the way his posts read. No, many people in the yeshiva world do not follow his description. Many binei torah do not get an “over the top” where the barber mows the front with a 4 and the sides with a 3 or 2. Actually, getting a 4 on top and a 2 on the sides looks like a “step” something pretty unyeshivish. Some do the over the top thing, many get the front cut with scissors. WIY says that the front shouldn’t be longer than a 4 if you want to look like a ben torah. That is silly. A good barber can trim with scissors which suits benei torah fine. And there are many binei torah and talmedi chachamim that never sported peyos. You can get the ben torah look either way.

But the whole thing is overdone. What ever happened to the dictum in Avos, Do not stare at the barrel rather at what is in it?

zahavasdad: There is a big difference between say walking on a road paved by Zionists which is simply an act of benefiting from the governments accomplishments which were enabled through taxes and outright giving money to the establishment. One is much more direct and one is much more indirect. And by the way, nearly impossible to avoid – which brings us to a second difference namely a thing which is impossible to avoid (not walking, riding etc.) and a thing easy to avoid (taxes).

I am not saying it is right or wrong to evade taxes in Israel. I am simply saying that your specific argument in defense of tax paying in Israel is wrong.

There is another point whichis not being addressed. Even if you claim that these haraidim protesting at a job fair are somehow correct in OPINION how is there justification for their ACTIONS? What ever happened to the sin of shaming others in public? Does that part of Torah count or only the parts that make us look better than the next guy?

Do you think they went through all the steps of the chofetz chaim before speaking up negativity about others? Making sure to know all facts inside and out, not exaggerate, first try and speak to them privately, be lishmah etc etc etc

Here, the argument that we are dealing with non religious or anti religious does not apply. These are Torah abiding citizens. And besides, everyone knows that the method they are just get the other side worked up and more dedicated to their own opinion as can be seen where they start taunting back at them and singing and dancing.

This is the most shelo lishmah thing ever and they probably lost their share in the After-world for shaming publicly (that’s gotta suck) (assuming they did not lose it already ions ago).

Shuls ought to appoint a Gabbai to go around harassing and embarrassing people that don’t keep their trap shut when they are supposed to. Or the Rabbi should stop prayers when the trap doors swing open.

Imagine you are sitting in the docket by a court case schmoozing it out with the guy next to you. What will the judge do? Ignore you? No way! He will stop the court proceedings stare you in the face and say either you keep quite or you are expelled from the court room. If you ignore him they will escort you out. Why is a shul different for crying out loud?

Sadly the phenomenon of a few members shmoozing in shul is not uncommon. Also, there are rabbanim who are not eager to stir up trouble so they keep quite.

The real way is that when a Rav sees that guys are chatting he should motion to the chazzan to stop and everyone will wait until the lowlifes clamp up. If its done a enough times, eventually the shmoozers will get the feeling that they are not welcome and they will either shut it up or change shuls.

A valid point is raised. In this coming weeks parsha we read about the yifas toar.

In order to make her ugly her head is shaved.

Why would a Jewish woman do something ugly?

And besides from the story of kimchis is it not clear that she had hair??

Why be frummer than the famous kimchis who is the gemorahs be all and end all of modest women. THE example of tznius.

There is also a gemorah about the woman in the city where people didn’t die…everyone told the truth…she was washing her hair when someone came to the door…she didn’t want to say….

    So she too had hair.

We also find the sotah has her hair exposed. Now there is no indication that she was deviating from the norm….we do it to shame her………

So shaving the head makes a woman ugly (open verse) and even kimchis would not shave her hair????

    nfgo3 and the rest of you;

Could it be that Obama was totally uninvolved and this is simply how the cookie crumbled? Perhaps. But I think you are being a little naive to believe that it is totally unrealistic to say that Obama (secretly)applied some form of pressure or blackmail to get at least one of the conservatives to vote with the liberals.

And here is why. There is no question that if it would get struck down then that would be a terrible blow to Obama and could make him lose the election. He placed such a heavy emphasis on this thing (its obamacare!) as did the country that it could topple him. Why do you think its insane that he did some subtle arm-twisting or sweetening of the deal for Roberts? This could cost him the election for crying out loud!

Yes its a different branch of government….so what? You think no politician ever greased the palms or blackmailed or what have you.. a judge or justice or some aspect of the legal system? common.

Nixon did illegal things. Didn’t he?

What about Clinton? Lying under oath is illegal.

If a man has no God he will stop at nothing. Obama has no God. He stands for taxing us to death, illegals, gays, “a woman’s right to choose” (baby slaying) and every other Godless thing.

Yes I think he played dirty.

gemorah in sukah 29a says that there are four spiritual reasons for a solar eclipse and one of them is homosexuality. It says that if it happens in the evening that is a sign of evil for the western world if its totally red like blood then a sword is coming if it is dark it means hunger if it is both then both. If it happens in the evenings its a machlokes if it is coming quickly or will take long…

Now with Obamas stance on homosexuality its all clear….WATCH OUT… check out the gemroah and decide for yourself.

People like The Chassidishe Gatesheader are dead wrong (in my opinion obviously)

Here is why. Question, why should we care about what they do if it does not effect us?

    Answer, is DOES effect us.

    Question, how?

Answer, its another step in the break down of the society which GREATLY effects JEWS. Before the sixties when pot, rock and roll etc. became the norm the world was a better place. People were normal and it effected us. Yes it did. Jews follow their surroundings (as do all people). So as the society gets worse so do Jews.

Also, do you think that there are no gays out there that just happen to be Jewish? No waaayyy…Yes way sir. And now THEY get to be legally married which is a horrible stain which we SHOULD care about.

And besides, is it not a chillul Hashem when the people of Hashem do not stand up for morality? Of course it is.

And comparing it to other sins is wrong because even though it is true that there are plenty of things that people do wrong, the ones that cause the basic structure of society to fall apart are more important to US. Because it effects US MOST.

Also, all people are commanded as one of the 7 mitzvos binei noach in this matter and like I said it effects us all. We are commanded to be a light unto the nations. And ignoring the issue and caring only about ourselves and not the betterment of the world stinks of a darkness unto the nations.

And the argument that who cares if they serve idols etc is stupid because we pray every day in aleinu that the world reject and throw away idols and false ideologies and only swear and know of Hashem. And we declare how we long for the day. If this issue does not bother you then there is no way that you long for the betterment of society. You are a classic example of “with the lips they honor me but their hearts are far from me”.

    I rest my case.

oomis1105: I find it funny that you are arguing with the Chazon Ish.

You can ask a question on his shita. You have no right to state why he is wrong and explain your own hashkafah on how Hashem does things vs. the Chazon Ishs. If you want to say you understand Rav Moshe’s shita better – thats fine. But dont go saying how the Chazon Ish’s logic is wrong. You are less than a worm compared to him.

in reply to: Life Insurance in Torah Hashkafah #754037

    Participant

The reason why I asked this question is because I remember hearing that the Chazon Ish holds that one should not have life insurance because if someone does it could work against him. The reason is that perhaps the reason why he is spared death is because of the financials problems he will cause his family, but now that that issue is no more, he might die.

Am I quoting him correctly? Has anyone heard of this?

Also, assuming what I said is the Chazon Ish’s shita, I have a kasha. According to him, wouldn’t health insurance fall into the same category? Perhaps a person is not getting a sickness due to the financial strain it would put on his wife or children who dont deserve it, but now that he is insured that problem is gone, so Hashem will send the sickness.

So how can anyone follow the Chazon ish’s shita on Life, and at the same time have Health? Is that not a stira (assuming I have all the facts right)?

It is a the strongest thing to do. Like Haman, if they erect a pole near the Knesset and swing those dogs from it way high….I will praise them despite the hatred I have for all their mistakes and sins.

Please dont start the whole we need to have mercy garbage. The only thing Arabs fear and respect is power. They laugh at dumb American diplomacy. They perfect lying to an art, and the world is dumb like a donkey.

And here is the thing: Screw world opinion. The Israeli government would rather be all dead and have America think good of them and get their money handouts than be alive and look bad! Use as much force and power that you can and ignore the cursed Obama!

I pray that no more bombs and killing happen. However if one is decreed on high to happen and it will not be reverted…then and only then I say instead let it go to a relative of the Heads of Israel. That way (of course if the decree on high is irreversible) they will actually feel what its like instead of fake stupid speeches.

Why do people jump to say…oh, the religious people are fakers…..Oh, so you love the ones that trample on Shabbat, Niddah, etc etc. but you find fault in people who at least keep the basic laws! I think there is some latent Jewish self hatred in such people.

Do you have any idea how many babies were slaughtered by the Zionists due to abortion laws? Do you have any idea how many Yemenites were forcefully ripped away from Torah by them? Do you have any idea how much they resisted helping Jews in the Holocaust? Read Perfidy and see how evil these sub humans are! Perhaps my timing was off.

However, I feel that the fact that so many Jews forsook G-d and his Torah is SO ignored. Everyone screams to catch and kill the terrorists when ever things like this happen….which they totally should!

However, it is so important to remember that the real reason for things is spiritual not physical.

And it is crucial to feel MORE pain for the pain of G-d than the pain of man. I am not G-d forbid taking away from the family’s pain. They are holy and pure, and are now in the eternal bliss of Gan Eden. And the murders will go to Gehenom. I am just pointing out the pain of Hashem.

What this whole element of surprise is, I have no idea. First of all, why is the surprise greater when the baby is born than when you find out. Either way its going to be, surprise its a boy! or surprise its a girl! Its just when.

And besides, imagine a person wants a boy (could be a girl, just picking one) so if it turns out to be a boy he/she is very excited, just as much as if he is told beforehand. If it turns out to be a girl, he/she is very happy also (justs hopes next time it will be whatever) and thanks G-d wholeheartedly for a healthy child….same feelings go through head if told beforehand.

I think it makes things easier because you only need to worry about one name. You dont need to go through all the options if its a boy and if its a girl.

Also, if you want to pick up some baby clothes or whatever to have in the hospital or what not..you could choose the right baby color….although that is not very important.

The reasons not to that I have heard so far are hard to understand. Looking into the future? What future? The good Doc does some standard checking of fetus to detect gender. Pretty in the moment I think. And what is so terrible about slipping and telling someone. Of course its totally better not to say anything, keep things bitzina. But if you slipped…nu, it should be the worst thing. Im not a Rav so I will leave it to people who know more.
