doniel: Angel is as chashuv as they come

If by they, you mean the conservative jews, that is very possible. I’m not personally in the habit of ranking their chashivus, and I’m not sure what the criteria would be, but I’m sure there is a way to do so.

But, I’m sure he doesn’t hold a candle to Saul Lieberman (who by the way, wrote a teshuva ????-ing the stuff that Weiss does, so they aren’t even conservative–they are left wing conservative. hee hee)

Doniel: You just keep on convincing yourself.

Look, if you want to rely on Angel, go ahead. Everyone can do their own thing, and I don’t really care one way or another.

But a chacham has einav b’rosho. That is, you should be aware that orthodox jews may not accept his geirus.

Also, for the record, I don’t care who is rebbi is. I care who he is. Rebi Meir’s rebbi was an apikores, and a large percentage of the talmidim in Volozhin were apikorsim.

They don’t even claim to be orthodox. They call themselves Open Orthodox to distinguish themselves from orthodoxy. The same way Conservative calls itself Conservative Judaism to distinguish itself from Judaism.

And this has nothing to do with Modern Orthodoxy. Modern Orthodoxy and chareidim are very close compared to the distance both groups have from these clowns.

Modern Orthodox rabbonim and establishments are the ones leading the charge on this. The chareidim are distanced from it; nobody from our community is going to get confused. It is the Modern Orthodox who to their credit have stepped up to the plate to expel this Eidah Ha’raah from our midst. ????? ??? ??????.

Angel is buddies with Avi Weiss.

Assuming you mean theologically they are buddies (which they are, as is confirmed by a simple google search), that certainly explains it.

I suppose if anyone wants a giyur with him, I don’t really care. But they certainly shouldn’t be surprised if nobody will marry their kids until the kids get an orthodox geirus.

yet conversions done by the most respected rabbis are not on the list either. R’ Marc Angel, for instance, is the former RCA president, and the RCA today has distanced themselves from him.

I’m not sure what you are trying to say, but I think if the RCA has distanced themselves from him, that is a sign that he is not “the most respected rabbis”.

Also, hold your horses, because next we’re getting….

    Darchei Ambit! ?? ?? ?’ ???? ??????

When you sign up for our seminary, you will notice that the tuition is $5000 higher than our competition. But, for every student that you sign up, you will receive $2000!

    And that is not all!

Each time you sign up a student and they in turn sign up a student, you will receive 10% of whatever amount of bonus they receive! And that goes for the next generations also.

So if you sign up five students, you get $10,000

And if they each sign up five students, they each get $10,000 and you get $5,000.

And if those next ones each sign up five students, they each get $10,000; your original signups each get $5,000, and you get $2,500!!!!!!!

But you ask, what about when the seminary fills up? Won’t the last people lose money?

No! One thousand times no! Because Darchei Ambit never fills up! We have unlimited spots, and unlimited resources to provide for students. We will never turn any student away for lack of space. You are secure that the students you find will be able to sign up and you will make your money back plus unlimited profits.

It is sickening that people go to Midtown Manhattan on dates.

A yiddishe date is something pure; it is for purposes of kedusha. It is insane that you would wish to degrade and sully it by taking it to that makom tummaa.

Better to go to a beis medrash.

in reply to: what is the impact of where you went to seminary on shidduchim? #902034
    popa_bar_abba
    Participant

This is an important subpart of the shidduch crisis that few people realize.

See, every guy will only date girls from a few seminaries–which effectively creates a shiddush crisis within a shiddush crisis for girls who did not got to those seminaries.

The guys often don’t even know this, but if you ask any guy who has dated for a while, invariably almost all of his dates will have been from 2-4 seminaries.

Girls really should be attempting to game the system by going to seminaries which more guys date from, to maximize their odds. After all, this is an odds game, you know.

    Medium thinker:

Not quite. Intent to abandon means that you intend for other people to be allowed to use it; not that you intend to not use it yourself anymore. There is no evidence that he intended for other people to be allowed to copy it.

n order to effect an abandonment, the proprietor must have an intention to surrrender or abandon his right and allow the public to copy.” 84 A.L.R.2d 462

Well, here is the Wikipedia entry on that:

Copyright protection attaches to a work as soon as it is fixed in a tangible medium, whether the copyright holder desires this protection or not. Before the Copyright Act of 1976 an artist could abandon or forfeit their copyright by neglecting to comply with the relevant formalities. Difficulty arises when one tries to apply the doctrine of abandonment to present-day concerns regarding the abandonment or gifting of a digitized work to the public domain. The abandonment of a work is difficult to prove in court, though Learned Hand stated proposed a test which parallels other forms of abandonment law wherein an author or copyrightholder could abandon their work if they intend to abandon it and commit an overt act to make public that intention.[3]

There is only anecdotal evidence, but from much first-hand experience, I’d estimate it to be in the ballpark of 1%.

I am sure it is higher than 1%. Then again, I am sure that the kids who you think only became non-chassidish, that many of them are really not shomer shabbos either but don’t want you to know.

OK, so here is the funny thing.

OP miswrote what he meant. He meant to say that it bothered him that girls don’t get dates, and he knows that is so because the girls he dates don’t often get dates, and he is fed up with that. He wrote it badly because facially it looks like he is fed up with the fact that he has to date them–not with that they don’t get dates.

Popa decided to be funny, and pretend he understood OP the way it appeared written. Then, that framed the thread because if you read OP and then Popa, it was natural you would not reinterpret OP as you probably would have without Popa.

Popa still thinks it is funny. And will still think so later also. You may check back if you are unsure.

Popa, how would you know if she needs it?

If she isn’t absolutely phsychotic, she doesn’t need it. Just needs good old fashioned therapy.

Would you need to meet the psychiatrist?

No, only a psychologist. I think psychiatrists are witch doctors.

Would you demand that first she stops the meds and then you’ll date?

    No.

As a spouse, do you feel that you are in charge of what meds your spouse can take?

No, but as a potential spouse I can be in charge of who my spouse will be.

Do you really believe that meds are “overprescribed” to the extent that “she almost certainly doesn’t need it”??

    Absolutely.

Do you have research to prove that???

    Yes.

You’re saying nonsense. You expect the parents in meah sheorim to have a picture of book entitled “types of jews”, where they will point out each one and say “this is a teimani, this is a bucharian, this is a chardal, this is a dati, this is someone from the five towns, this is someone from chicago.”

MO kids don’t grow up in insular neighborhoods, because such neighborhoods don’t exist. If they did, then I expect they would be very surprised the first time they saw a chossid, who would look nothing like the jews where they were from.

My father is a clean shaven man. Once a young chassidishe boy came over to him and said “du bist a yid”?

My father was furious and outraged that a child could grow up thinking that despite wearing a yarmulke, a man might not even be Jewish without a beard.

And that, my friends, is closed mindedness at it’s best.

    I disagree.

It is quite normal for little kids to think that other jews look like the ones they see every day. The kids father never showed him a clean shaven jew with a yarlmuke and said “goy”! And besides, the arabs in yerushalaim also cover their heads with a kippa looking thing frequently.

Anyone else in that situation would have said, “how cute”, and understood where the kid was coming from–instead of being upset.

And that my friends, is closed-mindedness at its best.

I should mention that I am parked in front of someone’s driveway. But, I happen to know it is an illegal driveway because last time I parked there and got a ticket, I fought it successfully because it was illegal.

I have one less friend, but have a parking spot about half the time–that is, whenever I get home first I have it.

Anyway, we really weren’t friends before that either. Ever since I took his kishke at the kiddush (he wasn’t eating it; he was just shmoozing).
