The most fun a yeshiva bochur can have is coming to grips with a difficult tosfos. Ecstasy when you figure out pshat. No twisted knees, no twisted ankles, no broken wrists. And the reward for yegiyah in Torah. Unlimited. Who can ask for more.

Emunah is Faith, faith that Hashem is One and the Only One. Emunah is the posuk Shema Yisroel. Bitachon is emunah, belief and faith that Hashem runs it all and that He will do and knows what is best for all of us. Of course we need both of these concepts in our lives constantly. If we use our inner intellectual eyes instead of our material eyes, we will see this on a daily basis. Think about your life and you’ll see how Hashem constantly watches over you and helps you in everything you do. Bitachon is more than hoping. Its KNOWING, through emunah, that Hashem is with you.

Sarah Schneirer started Bais Yakov schools with the exact mission of teaching girls Torah. She was supported strongly by the Gerrer Rebbe ztvkl and most of the polish rebbes, plus the Litvak rosh yeshivas and the German rabbonim. Without the Bais Yakovs our frum generations would have gone.

I learn chumash with a sefer called “chok l’yisroel” it has the chumash, targum, rashi. all in 6 portions for each day, friday being the longest. then each day there is a portion from neiviem and ksuvim. then mishna, and gemorah, rambam, zohar and mussar, very interesting way of learning a lot.

I learn an hour Daf Yomi before shachris. After breakfast I learn the parsha in a sefer called Chok L’Yisroel. This has the parsha by each day. Then there are portions to learn from the haftorah, from Kesuvim, mishna, gemorah, zohar, rambam, mussar. That’s about an hour or so. Later I learn a chasidish sefer. And then again gemorah. Altogether about 4 hours a day.

MEDRASH EICHO BRINGS SEVERAL CHAZAL WHO TRY TO EXPLAIN THE POSUK IN YIRMIYAHU THAT SAYS; WHY WERE KLAL YISROEL THROWN OUT OF THEIR LAND, BECAUSE THEY DESERTED THE TORAH, THEY STOPPED GIVING TORAH RESPECT AND LEARNING PROPERLY. ANOTHER POSUK SAYS, BECAUSE YOU DESERTED ME (HASHEM) AND MY TORAH YOU DID NOT OBSERVE. SAYS THE MEDRASH: HALEVAI YOU WOULD HAVE LEFT ME BUT MY TORAH STILL OBSERVED. BECAUSE THE HOLY LIGHT IN THE TORAH AND THE STRENGTH OF DOING MITZVOS WOULD MAKE PEOPLE FEEL AND UNDERSTAND WHY THEY SHOULD HAVE HASHEM IN THEIR HEARTS. JUST AS FIRST THEY STOPPED RESPECTING HASHEM, THEN DESERTED THE TORAH; SO TOO BY GOING BACK TO TORAH, THEY WOULD GO BACK TO HASHEM.

Its possible that the generations that followed did not like those names. Maybe Rav Tarfon’s children weren’t thrilled with that name. Yet there are thousands of Akivas around now. And many Alexanders. Does anybody know a Shaltiel? I do, my friends son. How about Saryahu? I had a friend with that name. Times change and names with them.

The biggest problem in Lakewood, more than in Monsey, is the yeshiva situation. Where are all the rich people who sold their Flatbush houses for $2 million and bought huge houses in Lakewood for $500,000? Housing in Lakewood is much cheaper than Monsey. Lakewood also is a city setting while Monsey is like the country, roads up and around hills. Commute to Manhattan is so much easier and faster from Monsey. Monsey is very chasidish too. Truth is, me personally, I’d rather stay in Brooklyn. Shuls on every block, yeshivos and BY galore. Tuition pretty affordable. Shopping everywhere for anything.

Did you all know that Hashem decided that Klal Yisroel should exist as 12 basically separate nations when we entered Canaan. It wasn’t until hundreds of years later that the Jewish nation united came into being. Hashem sent us all over the world. Seemingly fragmented, but we weren’t. We were united in Torah. But we still have what the Princes of Israel did at the chanukas ha’mishkon. They brought the same korbonos, but all had different reasons. We can and are one nation even if we seem to have different ways. A Yid is a Yid because he believes and practices Torah. How many non-bearded Jews learn Daf Yomi every day on the LIRR? How many bearded Jews daven in 15 minutes and run off to do business? Beard beard where is your Yid?

in reply to: What did people do before Rashi invented Rashi tefillin? #1120088
    theprof1

Up to Rashi’s time, people actually would put on either Rashi or Rabbeinu Tam or both. Rashi finally made the psak that his interpretation of the order was correct and all the rabbonim of that time accepted it. One concept is that both pair were worn, the debate was which pair should be worn first. Chasidim wear both pairs after their wedding. Those who wear only Rashi tefilin are not transgressing anything.

Here’s good side dish, no eggs. Cook wild rice mixed with white rice until fluffy, usually 40 minutes for about 1 cup. Add 2 tbs olive oil to the water before cooking. Saute chopped kale or chopped spinach and chopped scallions. After the rice is done, add that to the rice and mix well. Add 3 tbs sweet and sour duck sauce and mix well. Serve. Enjoy.

REITS was the best yeshiva in America in the 1930s and 40s. Somehow YU moved its emphasis of Torah and Madoh, as promulgated by the Rov, to an emphasis on secular education. Along with that went the dream of a “modern” Orthodoxy. The so called modern frum developed a distaste for the ultra orthodox and chasidim, who looked down at them for going so secular. and started going more left. When you teach your kids that mainstream orthodoxy is wrong, they go along with that. Becoming more secular, especially on a college campus, means going off the derech. But still, you cant generalize. The 5 towns, which was the capital of modern orthodoxy, has gone seriously to the right.
