On a lighter note, there’s an old joke about Yankel who totally abandoned Yiddishkeit. He moved to a completely goyish neighborhood, had only goyish friends, had no connections to Judaism at all.

After living like that for many, many years, one day at a nearby mall Yankel (now known as Jack) bumps into his old friend Moshe from the old neighborhood.

Moshe is shocked by his friend’s life style.

“You mean to tell me you have nothing Jewish left in your life at all?!?” asks Moshe.

“To be totally honest” replies Yankel, “There are only two things left to my Jewish identity that I can’t seem to shake off”.

    “Nu?” asks Moshe.

Yankel responds “Well, truth be told, I still love kneidlach, and… I’m still afraid of dogs!”

I am not familiar with this Gemara and I don’t know in what context it makes this statement. It is definitely not a general rule, because I can say with absolute certainty that I am as different from my mother’s brothers as one could possibly be.

    I hope you are kidding!

It may well be so that a very large percent cows are considered Treifa, – BUT – you wouldn’t know that until AFTER they are shechted! – soooo… even chalav Yisrael milk could have come from a cow that ultimately is determined to be not kosher – FOR IT’S MEAT!

A very machmir rov told me years ago that there was no problem buying a cup of coffee at ‘Chock Full of Nuts’ diners (which were common at the time, – and also served a large variety of otherwise traif food).

Hopefully the “chidush” will be (and the problem IS that it IS a chidush for many) the terrible dimension of the problem of what the shmutz on the internet is doing to klal Yisrael, – and not only to men, but to women, to young boys, AND even to young girls!

Yes, everyone will say “I know, I know, but MY kids would NEVER look at that stuff, I would never look at that stuff” – but guess what? They would be WRONG. EVERYONE is suseptible to falling in this nisayon, and it HAS destroyed countless Jewish lives and marriages. Yidden who appear to be totally ehrlich, frum b’nai Torah have secret lives of addiction to this shmutz.

The “chidush” of this asifa will be (I think and I hope) that, in addition to other safeguards that will be discussed, – EVERYONE’s computer MUST have filters that will prevent intentional OR accidental viewing of inappropriate websites.

    Want a REALLY fabulous experience?

Go to Eretz Yisrael. Even if you’ve been there before, spend those 3 days in a place you never really visited before (at least not in depth), like maybe the Golan Heights or the Galil. Even if you’ve been all over Eretz Yisrael 50 times, NO place compares to it.

Why would you want to go to any of the increasingly anti-Semitic, yishmaeli-overrun countries in Europe when you have your own beautiful country to see.

    Josh31…

    You got that exactly right!

    Health…

I am forced to assume that, according to you and “the likes of you” that the abnormal, unnatural victories of the IDF in ’48, ’67, and ’73, were due to the incredible SUPERMEN of the IDF since HaSh-m (according to you and “the likes of you”) opposes the state and believe that HKB”H would not have been responsible for all those victories for the traif medina. Still, – accounting for all the Scud missiles that fell in Israel during the Gulf War, and the thousands of katyushas and kassams that have fallen in more recent years with, B”H, extremely limited injury or damage – well, that is a bit harder to explain.

And b.t.w. MY Zionist “kool-aid”, is absolutely DELICIOUS, and as Josh31 above hinted at, has a mehadrin hechsher that is over 3,000 years old. You can reference it throughout Tana”ch.

Though I have MANY problems with MANY of the things the so-called government of Israel does, those who post all the vicious and venomous anti-Israel comments here clearly have no idea of what the physical and EMOTIONAL state of world Jewry was at the end of the Shoah, and can not and DO not have any musag AT ALL of what life as a Jew TODAY would be like (anywhere in the world) if there was no state of Israel.

    Torah Umada…

What is it with guys like you who keep confusing many commenters WITH FACTS!!!

Most people here don’t want to hear simple facts – like that without the IDF every Jew in E.Y. would be slaughtered within a few days, and that for all the zechusim of the gedolim, I don’t think even THEY would say that they merit the neesim geluyim that would be needed for continued survival WITHOUT the IDF!

So, for all the medina’s many flaws, how about a bit of hakaras hatov to the sons and husbands and fathers and brothers who put their lives on the line in the IDF, defending EVERY Jew in Israel regardless of whether they are Tziyonim or anti-Tziyoni.

Fine! So if a well respected chareidi Rosh Yeshiva could do that, why do so many commenters here feel that THEY can NOT do that – or even LESS than that – I would not even expect any of the anti-Zionist types here to fly the Israeli flag, BUT how about just showing a bit less venom, and a bit more “decency and courtesy” towards others that feel differently than you do.

Is Ponevezh an M.O. or a Mizrachi yeshiva???

The hareidi-religious community in Israel largely abstains from Independence Day celebrations. However, this year as every year, the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, a large and respected institution, marked the day by raising the Israeli flag.

Was Rav Kahaneman z”l an evil Tziyoni – or did he just maybe recognize a nais min ha’shamayim when he witnessed one?

    “Loyal Jew”

I don’t know what “believing in the medina” means?

If it means that I think the State of Israel is a Jewish State the way a Jewish State SHOULD be, -then without any doubt, I do NOT ‘believe’ in the medina.

If it means that i believe HaSh-m has given the Jewish People sovereignty over (at least part of) Eretz Yisrael prior to the coming of Mashiach, -for whatever His reasons may be, then Yes, I ‘believe’ in the medina.

And if it means that I think we should mourn those who gave their lives defending Jews, then yes, i certainly do ‘believe’ in the medina.

And by the way, who put you in charge of what is right and what is wrong, what constitutes right and wrong vs ‘differing views’, and who should be allowed to comment on Y.W.?

    a few points…

To say that the medina exists because of “Kochi V’otzem Yodi asoh Es Hachayil Hazeh” i.e. because of the might of the IDF IS kefira and 100% wrong.

However… those who say there was a Jewish yishuv and Torah learning going on in Eretz Yisrael BEFORE the medina are ALSO wrong on a few counts. For one thing (as was mentioned above) there were always arab attacks on Jews in those days such as the most ‘famous’ one – the massacre in Hevron in ’29. Secondly, would ANYONE here suggest that the gedolim IN Eretz Yisrael NOW should tell all the Jews to leave E.Y.? I don’t think so.

So… we have to deal with what the REALITY is NOW. The reality is that without the IDF, ALL the Jews in E.Y. would be slaughtered in a matter of days, and that’s chilonim AND chareidim and everything in between. If you will say that it is the chareidim and chareidi gedolim in E.Y. that give everyone their protection, and NOT the IDF, then i would pose the following question… Do you think that the Jews (even the chareidi Jews) are on a level to merit the neesim g’luyim that would be necessary to keep them alive WITHOUT the IDF?!?

To me it is clear that Israel exists today ONLY with the help of HKB”H and he uses the IDF as his shluchim, since we (or at least enough of the Yidden in E.Y.) have enough merit for neesim nistarim (i.e. protection via the IDF) but NOT enough merit to depend TOTALLY on the neesim g’luyim (there HAVE BEEN b.t.w. plenty of isolated cases neesim g’luyim too!) that would be needed without the IDF.

Bottom line… Everything comes from HaSh-m, but His shluchim who put their lives at risk to protect ALL the Jews in E.Y. deserve our respect, and those who were killed al kidush HaSh-m, ha’Am, v’haAretz deserve for us to memorialize their ultimate sacrifice.

    Just curious…

WHERE will you run to when it ‘hits the fan’ in this ‘goldena medina’ – (As it looks like it soon will) – Poland? France? Russia?

Israel is indeed very, very far from the way it SHOULD be, (and ultimately WILL be)…

But – Thank you HaSh-m for giving us the opportunity to return to our land with sovereignty over it, thank you for Your many neesim throughout the last 64 years, AND thank you HaSh-m for the brave soldiers who, at risk of their life and limb, and too often, with the LOSS of their lives or limbs, defend our Land and People – even those who defame and speak evil about them. May the memory of these kedoshim be blessed.

To answer the original question posed…

The Chazon Ish in his Mitzvos haTeluyos ba’Aretz states that one may leave Eretz Yisrael for a business trip, to get a shidduch, and for a few other short term reasons, BUT it has to be only TEMPORARY. He concludes with ??? ?????? ?? ???? – to SETTLE (i.e. permanently) in chutz la’Aretz is FORBIDDEN.

Usually they are NOT makpid on carry-on bags, so you should try to put smaller but heavy items (like shoes or boots or books) in your carry-on.

I love charoset too – at least the charoset that I make!

A couple of interesting thoughts about charoset that I had for the first time this year…

    1) Unlike matza and maror, there is no definite shiur of how much you have to eat (only that you can only have a dip’s-worth with the maror, – but other than that you can have as little or as much as you want).

    2) Unlike maror, which whether lettuce or horse-radish or whatever, is JUST that, i.e. JUST lettuce, or JUST horse-radish, but with charoset, everyone has their own varied ingredients and recipes for it.

I was thinking about the implications, and was thinking that maybe taking the above thoughts into the cheshbon, charoset really is a symbol of chairut (freedom) since WE have bechira to determine the recipe AND how much to eat -AND- even most of the letters of those two words are the same!

in reply to: What does Bitachon mean to you? #867799
    AinOhdMilvado
    Participant

    To me…

Emunah is just the general belief that there is a HaSh-m who created the universe and gave us the Torah.

Bitachon is much harder. Bitachon is the ability to maintain your emunah when things seem bad, even very bad, even terrible. As “yungerman1” (above) said, to trust that HaSh-m is there with you and that He does only what is good, even if we can’t see how it is good now. To trust that even when we have crushing financial issues, or health issues, or loss of a loved one issues, and that eventhough right now, with our limited perspective, these things seem horrible beyond horrible, to know that nevertheless, despite how these things seem to us now, that in HaSh-m’s great master plan, even these “terrible” things are ultimately good.

Sometimes we will realize these “terrible” things were good in just a few months time. Sometimes in a few years time. Sometimes we may not see how it was good until at 120 we go “upstairs” and can see that bigger picture.

BUT… bitachon means that though we do not understand NOW how what seems bad IS good, we still, internally, DO trust that it is.

We often look at things backwards.

HaSh-m, lechatchilah, WANTED us to eat matzah on Pesach, sooooo…

He created a scenario (the rush) where we would only be able to prepare matzah and not leavened bread.

WHY did He want, lechatchila, for us to eat matzah on Pesach?

Ahhhh… now we have to look into the really deeper kabala’dike (sod) reasons…

    YW fan…

(Firstly- I mistakenly called Shemot, Numbers. In English, it’s Exodus)

    There are many reasons given.

    The Torah itself just says…

12:39- “And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual.”

Soooo… from a practical point of view, they HAD to eat matza because there was no time to wait for dough to rise to bake regular leavened bread. BUT… The eating of matza itself AND the total getting rid of chametz, are both mitzvot, – so there is a lot more to it than just the factor of lack of time. There are tons of commentaries on this subject that explain what chametz signifies, why it must be eliminated COMPLETELY, etc. and it is way to much to go into here.

I think that both for the purpose of a more accurate translation, as well as for P.R. purposes, the term ‘settlers’ should be replaced.

It is being used as a translation for the Hebrew ???????.

The word ??????? would be better translated as ‘inheritors’.

Aside from the fact that the word ‘settlers’ has taken on (though not true) the negative connotation of people settling on OTHER people’s land, the term ??????? or inheritors, gives the message that the people live there by right of legitimate inheritance.
