Joseph, Bais Yaacov started because more and more girls, ignorant of yiddiskeit ( even in chashuva families ) were becoming not religious. Also, learning from momma produced and replicated a lot of ignorance passing as halacha. The following is a true anecdote and I’m sure not an isolated incident. 50 years ago i was at one of my aunts home . Another aunt accused her of treifing a chicken . Why? The chicken was being cooked in a horizontal pot and momma always used a vertical pot. The answer? The aunt replied that sh ed had asked my grandmother why she used a vertical pot and she was told it was the only pot she had that was big enough

First, the issue is to define “tznius problem”
If his problem is defined as women walking with sleeves above the elbow and knee length dresses and skirts, then it is truly his problem.
People sometimes think because it’s “their” community, they get to regulate/complain about how people dress. It happens in Boro Park on 13th Ave and it happened in Williamsburg when the City put in bicycle lanes on Bedford avenue ( people objected to immodestly dressed women riding thru Williamsburg ).

There was a reason for the use of West Lawrence as an address. When the first pioneers moved to Far Rockaway in the 1970s and 1980s, Far Rockaway had become a crime infested slum. 6 bedroom homes on Reids Lane were on the market for $18,000 and people couldn’t get mortgages for them ( my sister tried but the banks had redlined the area ). Customers had to be buzzed into the kosher bakery on Mott St because it had been held up so many times. My wife’s friend was pistol whipped in her apartment house lobby by a mugger during the daytime.
So, people who moved into the section of Far Rockaway that bordered on the western edge of Lawrence started using West Lawrence as an address to avoid the Far Rockaway stigma ( they still got their mail because they used the correct zip code )

Ubiq, i appreciate the time your taking and i believe i understand your point. My issue is the use of the word cheat. In the tuna example, if the heimishe wants to check every fish because they won’t accept a tuna acceptable to the OU, then it’s not an issue of cheating. Last i checked, Twizzlers doesn’t use tuna.
So, here is the question Joseph keeps dodging around and refuses to answer. What proof do you have , specifically to this product, that the heimishe hashgacha is willing to hire full time mashgichim to prevent cheating? Do they do the same for all their products?

Yapchick, it’s always about the money. The yeshiva in question ( i don’t know any details ) most likely can’t charge its families anywhere near what it costs per child. If you want top quality rebbis and pay them a good living wage, well, that costs money. That’s nothing new.

    Ubiquitin and joseph
Joseph said Bloom requires full time mashgichim to prevent cheating when OU mashgichim aren’t around. To me, that says they don’t trust how the OU supervises.
Joseph, how big is the Neblitz hashgacha? How many mashgichim do they employ? Where is the Twizzler plant located? Again, this is a vegan product so what is Bloom afraid of that they can afford full time mashgichim? You mentioned possible using utensils that might have come into contact with meat, milk or trief. In other words, you don’t trust the OU. When a utensil needs replacement, what does Bloom do to assure kashrus?
Does Bloom mandate full time mashgichim at every plant of every product they supervise? If so, how do they afford it?

2scents, you make it sound so simple. My hospital alone would receive up to 800 requests a month from the FDNYalone, looking for insurance info. We complied only because of an agreement negotiated by the Greater NY Hosp Assoc. We ignored requests from other ambulance companies ( private or volunteer).
If , as according to you most arrivals didn’t need, immediate treatment, they didn’t need an ambulance.

Since most shuls do not pay property taxes or ( in NYC other fees like water usage ) there are restrictions on how money can be distributed. For example, if a shul wantec to provide for a pension for its rav, in NY, permission would need to be obtained ( I think either from NY Sec of State or a judge )

People advocating moving to public schools have overlooked an enormous factor. Let’s say everyone does move to public schools. What happens then to the rebbes and teachers? With no students, they are out of a job. Since parents most likely won’t continue to pay tuition, how will the yeshivas other staff be paid? Yeshiva mortgages?Utilities?
    The law of unintended consequences.

There appears to be alot of misunderstandings, and misinformation regarding billing and copays.
COPAYS- copays are not paid to the insurance company. When a provider submits a claim, the ins and the patient share a “coresponsibility” for payment to the provider. The insurer provides the bulk , while the patient owes the copay. All copays, including Medicare must be billed and can, under certain circumstances , be written off, including Medicare. This is typically done if a financial review indicates the patient cannot afford to pay and qualifies for a reduced payment. Providers have maintain a charity care policy and inform the patient of its existence.
Billing insurance companies for routine care is not that difficult , but billing for ambulances is whole different world and presents numerous challenges. The patient is often in no condition to provide demographic and ins info. In addition, Federal law (EMTALA) prohibits the gathering of information until the patient has been triaged and stabilized , by which time the ambulance is possibly gone . NYC hospitals receive monthly lists from the FDNY requesting ins and demographics for patients transported there. How would Hatzolla do it?
Billing would require the purchase of electronic systems for registration, billing , and tracking income, receivables and cash. It would also have to hire fulltime staff to gather information, verify it, post it and follow up on the billing . Even if the billing and collection were farmed out to a service, they would have to be paid. Staff would also be needed to review applications for charity care.
What I’m saying is that billing requires capital investment and hiring of salaried staff members

Neville, i mentioned elsewhere that there is a far greater danger to ALL yeshivas on the horizon. Now that the NY State Senate is under Democratic control, it looks like the Legislature is going to actually pass a bill establishing a 12 month filing period wherein the statute of limitations on filing molestation lawsuits will be waived. The newspaper article I read focused on the financial impact on the Catholic church but yeshivas will be hard hit as well ( just from the legal bills alone, let alone payouts).

    Takes,
You missed a story with greater impact on yeshivas. For 10 years, the New York State Assembly had passed a bill giving victims of abuse , who were past the statute of limitations for filing a lawsuit, a 12 month to file a lawsuit regardless of when the abuse occurred. And, for 10 years the Republican controlled State Senate refused to consider it. Well, the Democrats have won control of the Senate and today’s Newsday reports that this issue will be among the first to be taken up.
This will financially devastate yeshivas ( the newspaper talked about the impact on the Catholic church).

Billing is not so simple. You have to buy billing software ( it’s all done electronically) and an accounts receivable system. You also have to train the EMTs to collect insurance information from either the patient ( in most cases not possible) or the hospital/ER. The ER has to stabilize the patient before they can inquire ( EMTALA law ) about insurance and the EMTs often cannot/won’t wait. You also have to hire staff to research and resubmit denied claims.

The military aspect was downplayed for valid political reasons. Sariray,

You have the luxury of living in a world that , because of vaccination, has not known the impact of widespread disease. Go to any Jewish cemetery that dates back to the 1800’s ( like Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn). What you’ll notice is quite a few tree stump monuments. Those are graves of children. My father in law lost 3 siblings who died of diseases that are preventable today. Until the Salk and Sabin vaccines for polio were developed, thousands either died or were paralyzed annually. When Salk asked for volunteers to take the vaccine, the line of mothers and children was almost a mile long. You live in a world made safe for children by vaccinations

CTL, you are so blind. You forgot about serial adulterers like JFK, LBJ and Clinton. Hillary was not a victim, but an enabler. She recently blamed Lewinsky. Roosevelt would not allow the Jews on the St Louis to enter the country , and refused to bomb the railroad to Auschwitz. Roosevelt didn’t solve the Depression, WW2 did. Obama’s booming economy? He claimed our economy could never grow more than 2%.
What about Obama’s long time attendance at the church of an antisemitic minister or his photograph embracing Farrakhan? Or his interference in Israel’s last election by supporting Netanyahu’s opponent? What about the Democratic sellout of black and Hispanic kids?
They are so beholden to the teachers union that they fight against charter schools that actually work and keep kids trapped in failing public schools. What about his Iran multimillion giveaway that he lied about? Were you able to keep your doctor and plan under Obamacare?

What I find fascinating about these discussions on the shapes of the letters is that our alphabet uses Aramaic letters . They were adopted during Galus Bavel. Prior to that, we used Paleo-Hebrew, which is shaped totally different. The Samaritans, who copied every we did, still write their ( tref ) sifrai torah in Paleo-hebrew which leads me to believe we dod too before the first churban.
Paleo-hebrew was still in use 2000 years ago as it appears on coins minted by Bar Cochba. The Aramaic script only appears after the first churban, only Paleo appears prior.
