He is a wonderful person.
apushatayidParticipantYou avoided the question. Why are casual and bakovidik mutually exclusive? Casual does not mean a lack of self worth either. Shlumpadik does.
apushatayidParticipant“Jeans are a clothing used for a casual manner and not a kavodik”
Tell that the many corporate executives who appear frequently in public wearing jeans (you can google many pictures online if you so choose). Again, not all jeans are the tight, torn variety. You can even find “dressy jeans” sold in stores. If you feel that they are not appropriate, by all means, dont wear them. Many people disagree with you though and wear them even when they are not in casual mode.
Can you please clarify how or why casual and bakovodik are mutually exclusive?
February 24, 2012 3:40 pm at 3:40 pm in reply to: Latest to Arrive and Earliest to Leave Minyan #854233apushatayidParticipantRabbi Frand recently gave a shiur on Tefilla Bitzibur (it refers to shmone esrei) and what is considered Tefilla Bitzibur (it was one of the parshiyos in the latter half of sefer bereishis, you might find these shiurim online somewhere). He brought down shittos that run the gamut from, one must start shmone esrei with the tzibbur for it to count as tefilla bitzibut to the other end of the spectrum, as long as someone from the tzibur is still davening shmone esrei you can start and it is considered that you davened bitzibur and shittos in between.
I’ll leave the other questions for others.
apushatayidParticipantI dont remember if Kamtza or Bar Kamtza was the intended invitee and who was invited in error. Either way, it is worth thinking about why the gemara refers to it as the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza when one of them was never there at all. Why is his name forever linked to the story that led to the destruction of the beis hamikdash if he was never there? Why is the name of the person who made the party – and was actively involved in throwing out an uninvited guest – not linked to this story (is it recorded anywhere?).I heard an answer in the name of R’ Dovid Feinstein Shlita that, if he (either Kamtza or Bar Kamtza – the intended invitee) was such a good friend of the one making the party, he would have showed up anyway and not taken it personally that he didnt get an invitation. That is ahavas chinam, your friend makes a simcha, you go and say mazel tov. Who knows, had he showed up and been in attendance, he may have been able to placate his friend and the uninvited guest may not have been thrown out and the rest of the story would not have played out. Pettiness and some measure of hatred for his friend, for no reason, resulted in his non attendance at the simcha of his friend. One does not have to conclude that the sinas chinam referred to in the gemara was that of the rabbonim in attendance.
apushatayidParticipant“Let’s pose it the correct way. A white shirt and dark pants worn as intended or the torn tight jeans(sold that way) worn as intended.”
Surely you are aware that jeans are sold in many other styles. Tight and/or torn are not the only jeans sold in stores. One can purchase black cotton pants that are tighter than the jeans you dont like, does this move black cotton pants down on your bakovidik scale?
While you are free to disagree, I dont think many people will assert that the yeshiva “uniform” has to do with bakovidik as much as it does uniformity which in turn answers the question of the OP. When part of the herd, one follows the herd (this is not a statement of right or wrong).

His side, her side and the truth. Going on and on about this without intimate knowledge of the entire picture helps nobody. It only further embarrasses the family.
February 22, 2012 5:48 pm at 5:48 pm in reply to: New news story- OTD Lakewood woman with 4 kids wants custody #857201apushatayidParticipantBlabbing about other people is not arvus. In fact it fosters the exact opposite.
apushatayidParticipant“after the gedolim paskened”
Is this psak be found in “seforim hakedoshim”? Can you cite a source for this psak?
apushatayidParticipant“Some jeans are tight fitted, with holes in the knees, is this kovod haTorah?”
No more or less kavod hatorah that a black felt hat bent out of shape, a white shirt that testifies to this mornings breakfast or a pair of black pants that would benefit from a visit to the washing machine.
apushatayidParticipantI dont know how old your sistser is, or where her friends are, but as a parent, another consideration, besides who will foot the bill, is, who will chauffeur this girl around town as she delivers mishloach manos to 50+ friends. Certainly wont be me 🙂

Please reread what I wrote. Please explain the connection between my comment and your response to it.
apushatayidParticipant“They are more of a casual pants-people wear them to garden and paint and not they way to portray themselves in public and before Hakoadosh baruch Hu.”
Well, since one is tending his garden in front of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, it would follow that for garden work, it is appropriate to wear jeans. I suppose you might argue it is inappropriate to do garden work.
February 21, 2012 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm in reply to: New news story- OTD Lakewood woman with 4 kids wants custody #857164apushatayidParticipantIf you were one of the 4 children in this case. Would you want it dissected and analyzed by a bunch of yentas in an online blog? Keep this in mind before posting another comment.

February 20, 2012 12:26 am at 12:26 am in reply to: Did Nachlas really have 1500 applicants? #852898apushatayidParticipantDo you speak lashon hara and rechilus directly to the seminary students you teach too, or do you spread it only online?
apushatayidParticipantHyperbole. Its not exclusively American, but it is found in abundance in the coffee room.
apushatayidParticipantYou are right, we shouldn’t vacation in the catskills, we should go to the alps like our zeides used to.
apushatayidParticipant1500 applicants at $100 for a non refundable application fee…
I think I might open a seminary.
apushatayidParticipantHershi, that’s another Meshugas.
February 17, 2012 12:44 pm at 12:44 pm in reply to: Did Nachlas really have 1500 applicants? #852884apushatayidParticipantThis is a rather ignorant question, I admit. Is Nachlas the new hit seminary of the year or has it been around a while but just now came into vogue as THE place to go?
apushatayidParticipantAre you asking if the idea of such a registry is crazy?
The wording of the OP seems to imply that the overwhelming number of gifts is what might be crazy.
apushatayidParticipantGoing to seminary/Yeshiva in EY.
apushatayidParticipantIf that’s where the herd is going and one is part of the herd….
apushatayidParticipantInternet blogs.
apushatayidParticipantWhat are the odds that someone who goes to Boro Park looking for a “chassidic family” will end up with a lubavitch family? Why didn’t Oprah, in her quest to interview a chassidic family, go to williamsburg or monroe or new square? I wonder who referred this family to her?
apushatayidParticipant….Until then, practice your Linning and enjoy Linsanity.
apushatayidParticipantArgo does sell “plain” tea.
apushatayidParticipantDepends how you soak the pig.
Regarding Argo, they have a twitter account…they have tweeted in response to peoples question, that by nature (not sure if pun intended or not) teas are kosher, “however our blending and production facilities are not certified kosher”.
apushatayidParticipantMickey schmickey. Did they hear of Linsanity?
apushatayidParticipantTo someone like Oprah, you go to shul, keep taharas hamishpacha, shabbos, kashrus, dress according to the dictates of halacha, you are a chassidic jew. She doesnt make the distinction between followers of chabad or sanz, yeshivat porat yosef or talmidim of the alter from slabodka. Religious jew = chassidic jew in her world view.
apushatayidParticipantSam you and I might know that. It seems (to me, from reading her site – but not having viewed any clips) that Oprah defines it differently. She would walk into any litvishe yeshiva and label it Chassidic too, unless someone took the time out to explain chassidus to her and how it is different than the litvishe derech.
apushatayidParticipantI browsed the O Network site, but did not watch any of the clips yet. Is it just me, or does is seem that Oprah defines any jewish male with a beard as a chassidic jew?
February 13, 2012 6:12 pm at 6:12 pm in reply to: english names for misheberach for cholim:is it permitted? #850934apushatayidParticipantBer, Volf, Glickel, Chinka, Harry, Seymour, Betty, Sally. The last 4 names were not popular in Europe, only reason they were not adopted as yiddish names. Well, that and the fact that they are not yiddish words.
apushatayidParticipantBut, where are the parents?
apushatayidParticipantI’m reserving comment until I watch the episode. Hopefully the O Network makes their shows available online.
apushatayidParticipantWhere are the parents?
February 12, 2012 1:23 pm at 1:23 pm in reply to: Compelling All Jews to Perform Mitzvos and Follow Halacha #852002apushatayidParticipantAnd?
apushatayidParticipantAsk shadchanim how prevalent this is in the non chassidish world too. That yeshiva? That shul? Dress like that? Have hanhaga X? By chassidim its easy to tie a neat bow around it by calling it “not our chassidus”. By non chassidim it is a little sloppier with the more generic “not our type”.
February 10, 2012 4:17 am at 4:17 am in reply to: Health insurance for large families with decent income #850594apushatayidParticipantFor what it is worth, having been enrolled in FHP, there truly is no such thing as a free lunch. Many providers have opted out of accepting these plans because the payout is lousy and the patient pays no copay on top of the lousy payout, leaving fewer providers for more clients resulting in worse service. The plans are also strict HMOs with zero out of network coverage and referrals to specialists are not easy to come by. CHP B has a lot of the same limitations but a more extensive provider network so services are better.
The full premium level Tina18 refers to is basicly the insurance company saying, you are past the subsidized level, but we will happily sell you a policy, on our terms of course.
February 10, 2012 3:39 am at 3:39 am in reply to: Now we can't write Shmuel or Refoel any more? #850539apushatayidParticipantAvoid the problem altogether, just name the boys sammy and raffy.
February 9, 2012 7:17 pm at 7:17 pm in reply to: Health insurance for large families with decent income #850586apushatayidParticipantIf the parents qualify for FHP (aka medicaid) the children do NOT qualify for CHP, they also qualify for FHP. If the parents and children all qualify for FHP, might I ask if you pay them little more than minmum wage?
If none of your 30k annual outlay is deductible you are earning in excess of 400k. Unfortunately, the government doesnt care that you pay full tuition for 8 kids (or whatever that number might be) it is not one of the criteria on their eligibility chart for CHP. I admit, it is a bitter pill to swallow, but think what your employees might be saying about someone who pays them so little that they qualify for medicaid.
apushatayidParticipant“I find this all very amusing.”
I find it ignorant and stupid.
February 9, 2012 4:22 pm at 4:22 pm in reply to: Health insurance for large families with decent income #850576apushatayidParticipant“Why should the employee get better (for free) then the employer who pays so much?”
Are you saying that you provide insurance for your employees? If so, why is your family not part of the group plan purchased for your employees?
If you are not, what are you paying so much, for? Perhaps creating a group for your employees would benefit you/your business in some way. Speak to a broker and your accountant.
apushatayidParticipantever try offering something back to the telemarketer?
apushatayidParticipantIt is an overused much abused term that has a meaning that is unique to each person who uses it.
apushatayidParticipantI would have expected Poppa to reply something along the lines that organ donation is not necessary since the poskim have already ruled that it is prohibited to use one in shul, even during the week because of chukas hagoyim. Now if one was considering a donation of chumashim….
February 8, 2012 8:15 pm at 8:15 pm in reply to: english names for misheberach for cholim:is it permitted? #850924apushatayidParticipantIt is recorded that when R’ Yackov Kamenetzky Z’l was ill, at the minyan of R’ Moshe z’l they were making a mi sheberach for him. They didnt know his mothers name. R’ moshe told them to make a mi sheberach for “R’ Yackov”, the ribbono shel olam knows who we mean. I assume the same is true for mack goldstien.
